The Capstone Project: Target Research

Research/Project Goal: Research QR Code implementation possibilities for a Bayer business and share findings

Research/Project Summary:As more consumers use mobile platforms to connect, the Pitt team class can analyze mobile trends and QR codes and do a case study of QR code use for a Bayer brand.

A specific Bayer brand should be picked for this research also, so the Pitt team can focus on a demographic with an understanding of the business for that brand.

The Capstone Project: Overview

Recommendations for Target Audience:Bayer HealthCare. Possibly Consumer Care business. http://www.bayercare.com

Assumptions for Target Audience::: US only:: Audience ages may range from 13-80, depending on the product:: Shoppers are in drug stores and Walmart:: Shoppers must have a smart phone (more on next slide)

QR Code Research: Details

Phase I: Research Assess mobile trends and QR code trends:: Demographics of mobile use in the US (also feature phone vs smart phone):: How are QR codes being used today in the US? (examples, case studies)

Assess QR Code creators and readers::List features and attributes of top creators and readers:: Recommend the best solution for Bayer

Phase II: RecommendationsRecommend QR code pilot implementation for a Bayer brand:: Should Bayer implement QR codes on a website for coupons, product

information, software downloads (Diabetes Care gluse meter software), videos about our brand, safety information

:: How should QR codes be piloted by Bayer? - on websites, product displays in a store or other place, or in other ways

:: How might Bayer implement a pilot of QR codes? - Can Bayer change the information in a QR code as needed? such as per region within the US, or per season, if seasonal, or other

QR Code Research: Details

Phase II: Recommendations : A unique problemWe have a customer who wants to use QR codes to deliver coupons for prescription medication. His thought is that, if people use the digital coupon, he can tie the coupon to an implementation of the coupon. :: He wants to know when someone has used the QR code coupon on his website

Challenges:What information can Bayer collect about the person? :: Can we know who used the coupon? :: Can we know who used the coupon? :: Can we know where the coupon was redeemed and when?Beware: We must be very careful when collecting personally identifiable information about patients and medical conditions. From a technical perspective, can the QR code help us to follow the coupon into the redemption process?Assumption: Does the smart phone have to have an active Internet connection to push data to a Bayer server, or can Bayer ask for the information somehow?Research Challenge: How might such a design look?

Requirements for the research

Requirements for consumers:(1) Smart phone (Apple iPhone, Google Android, or RIM Blackberry)(2) Camera on the smart phone(3) QR Code software (such as Neo Reader)

QR Code Research: Skills

Business/Marketing:A part of the project seems suited to someone with skills or interest in business and marketing:: finding out who are the people that use or would use and how are QR codes used (assess mobile trends):: should Bayer implement QR codes?:: Assess QR readers and creators (from a usability or marketing perspective)

Computer Science/Technical::: How to implement QR codes (understand QR codes, suggest regionalization, :: How to implement QR codes (understand QR codes, suggest regionalization,

where in the products they are easiest to print/decode/interpret, etc):: Pilot QR code implementation: What information to add to the QR codes?

How to add it? How to use it (e.g., add manufacturing information to the QR codes and use it to change the coupons as the number of days until expiration decreases. What characteristics of the QR reader would be a good thing to have (add preferences to the Bayer QR reader to be able to customize coupons when interacting with the coupon server, add location information by the QR reader/device)

:: Assess QR readers and creators (from a CS/technical perspective)
