Description - Gue Cemetery (13/22) - (cont1nuat1on sheet)

Both Elizabeth and Lucretia· s stones have a weeping willow tree carved above the inscriptions.

All of the stones (except one) are laying flat on the ground, at some distance from their bases. William Shaw's is leaning against one of the oak trees marking the site. The stones are weathered, but the inscriptions are legible.

The site has a generally untended appearance, although at this season (winte~) it is clear of brush and easily accessible.

(2 l When Shaw sold the prop~rty in 1869 to Robert S. · S:_iddath, the deed specified "saving and exempting the family burying ground"; (3

J several subsequent deeds also refer to a family graveyard. (4)

Sin.:::e all the remaining stones appear to be for members cf the Shaw family, and the cemetery is mentioned in the conveyance from Shaw to S!.!ddatt, it appears that "Gue Cemetery" is a misname.::: '

Little is known of William Shaw (1804-1881) except that between 1842 and 1851 he acquired approximately 180 acres of farmland in the area; the census records for the period 1840 to 1880 list his occupation as "farmer". (SJ The two-story, stucco-covered structure south of the cemetery is referred to as the William Shaw House, although it has not been established that William Shaw was the builder.

Married to Elizabeth Fish in 1826, Shaw was the father of 5 children: John Elevine, Lucretia, Julia Ann, William A. and Mary E.; Lucretia and John's gravestones are in the family cemetery, as are those of William Shaw and his wife, Elizabeth. Shaw's brief obituary, printed in the Montgomery County Sentinel for December 2, 1881, lists his place of death as Barnesville. (6)

CONTINUE ON SEPARATE SHEET IF NECESSARY

Research on family cemeteries in Montgomery County indicates that the maJority date from the nineteenth century, when it was not uncommon to establish a family burial plot. Only about 70 of the approximately 100 family cemeteries in the county still have any gravestones. (7) The Gue Cemetery is, therefore, one of a relatively small m1mber of such sites which has (because of its remaining stones) retained a clear link to the family which established it.
