Golden Instructions from the Word Station (30 minutes)

“The Big Storm” Bible Lesson

One day, Jesus decided to go out on a boat so he invited his disciples along with him. Itall began with such a nice day. The sky looked clear, and they planned to have a nicetime. They set out on the lake or sea and began their trip. The disciples talked along theway maybe sharing how many fish they had caught during the week, what lessonsJesus had taught them, and merely enjoyed the company of each other. While theywere engaged in their discussions of various matters, Jesus fell asleep.

One thing we can be certain of is that Jesus never sleeps when we need him. He iswatching over us all the time, and is never surprise by what happens around us in ourlives.

While the disciples continued sailing along the sea, they began to notice that the waves

became rough and a gust of wind had picked up quite rapidly. A storm was coming. They had been in the sea many times and knew when danger was around the corner.

The waves and water was rising higher and higher, and the boat seemed as if it wouldbe flooded. What were they going to do? They had not expected this, and becameconcerned.

There are times in our lives when we may feel concerned or worried about a test, completing homework, a friend who is mad at us, or a teacher that seems unfair. God isnear and we can ask for his help.

The disciples looked around and noticed that Jesus was sleeping. “Master! Master!”they cried. “We’re going to drown”!

Do you ever feel that way? Like no one understands what you are going through. Youmay think your parents don’t understand and your friends seem to be siding with others, and you feel all alone. But remember, Jesus is there all the same and he understands!

Jesus stretched out of his sleep and calm ly said, "What are you worried about?”I amhere. Where is your faith? The storm calmed and the waters ceased their turbulentwaves. Whew! What a relief!

We worry and worry for nothing some times. Jesus knows what is going to happen andwants us to trust him.

The disciples were amazed at the change in the weather. They looked at each otherand said, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obeyhim.”

Jesus wants to be in control of our lives too will help us to obey Him, He will never let usdown no matter what storm we face. He made the lightning and thunder and we aresafe in His care.

Questions for Discussion

1. Where are places that we find water?2. What are some purposes for water?3. In what ways does God protect us daily?

4. How would you feel when you were really frightened for some reason? What didyou do about it?

5. How have you felt during a big storm when you were at home in your bedroom allalone?

Allow all the children to find a golden coin in the sand box to take with them as areminder of the treasure that we find in knowing Jesus as our personal Savior, and howhe will protect us from any storm that we face in life. They are to find this with their baretoes (No hands allowed) Watch the fun!

Treasure from the Word Station (30 minutes) (Scripture Memorization)

Verse: He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters…. and all was calm.Luke 8:24

1. Give each child a bible. The teacher will model read the verse to the children.2. Read the whole verse together using their bibles.3. Say: God will protect us; we do not have to fear. The disciples were afraid and

called on Jesus to save them. He was there all along, but waited for the disciplesto express the need they had. God wants us to take our problems to him. He isready to listen and help us. He merely spoke the word and the sea was calm. When we are upset, anxious, or worried, if we will just take a moment to talk toJesus, He will help us to relax and be calm. It is only as we trust in Him that wecan have this calmness. When we worry, we will once again begin to haveanxious thoughts.

4. Read the verse again. Ask a couple kids to read all by themselves.5. Give each child a copy to take home.6. Pass out the Scripture sheets. Give them some markers to color the letters of the

verse.7. Do the worksheet together. The teacher will write the answers on a dry erase

board so they can copy especially for younger children.8. Play the following jeopardy game. See below for a copy to send home with them.

Instructions: Place a large quilt (small blanket size) that is made in 8.5 X 11 squarepieces on the wall. Tape to each material square a sheet of paper that will say atrandom these words on the back side that the kids cannot see: Treasures, Captain, or

Berry Muffin. Allow the kids one at a time to select a square and turn it over. If it saysmemory verse, they must say the verse. If it says one of the other words, they put itback on the quilt. If they say the memory verse correctly, they get to fish through thetreasure chest and find a prize to take home. You can keep the same squares to useover weekly. You may want to add all characters in the theme eventually.

Pass out the memory verse and give the kids markers to color in the verse.
