GENERAL MAINTENANCE INFORMATION

The required scheduled maintenance services listedin this guide are considered essential to the properoperation, safety and performance of your FordMotor Company vehicle. We recommend that youalso perform the Owner Maintenance Checks listed.These services are matters of day-to-day care thatare also important to the proper operation of yourvehicle. The recommended lubricants, fluids andservice parts conforming to Ford Specifications areavailable from your Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealer.

This guide gives you a place to record the servicesthat are performed on your vehicle so that you cankeep a record of when parts should be checked orreplaced. Give your Service Guide to your Ford orLincoln-Mercu ry service manager.

Maintenance: An investment

Maintenance is an investment that will pay dividendsin the form of improved reliability, durability andresale value.

To assure the durability of your vehicle and itsemission control systems, it is necessary thatscheduled maintenance be performed at thedesignated intervals.

Ford strongly recommends the use of genuine Fordreplacement parts. If other than Ford or Motorcraftparts or Ford authorized remanufactured parts areused for maintenance replacements or for theservice of components affecting emission control,the non-Ford parts should be equivalent to genuineFord Motor Company parts in performance anddur ability. It is th e owners r esponsibility todetermine the equivalency of such parts. Pleaseconsult your Warranty Information Booklet forcomplete warranty information.

Normal Schedule

Follow the Normal Schedule for most normaleveryday driving conditions.

Severe Duty Schedule

Follow the Severe Duty Schedule if your drivinghabits FREQUENTLY include one or more of thefollowing conditions:

Towing a trailer or using a car-top carrier.

Operating in severe dust conditions.

Extensive idling, such as police, taxi ordoor-to-door delivery service.

Short trips of less than 16 km (10 miles) whenoutside temperatures remain below 0F (-18C).

Owner maintenance checks

Listed below are vehicle maintenance checks andinspections that should be performed by the owneror qualified service technician at the indicatedintervals. Service information and supportingspecifications are provided in the Owner Guide.

Any adverse conditions should be brought to theattention of your dealer or qualified servicetechnician for expert service advice as soon aspossible.

The owner maintenance checks are generally notcovered by warranties and you may be charged forlabor, parts and lubricants used.

WHEN YOU STOP FOR FUEL:

Check the engine oil level.

Check coolant level in the recovery bottle.

Check the windshield washer fluid level.

Look for low or under-inflated tires.

WHILE OPERATING YOUR VEHICLE:

Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust orany smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.

Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Noticeany increased steering effort or looseness in thesteering wheel.

Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly orpulls to one side of the road.

When stopping, listen and check for strangesounds, pulling to one side , increased brakepedal travel or hard to push brake pedal.

If any slipping or changes in the operation of your

transaxle occur, check the transaxle fluid level.

Check automatic transaxle PARK function.

Check parking brake.

Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle (waterdripping from the air conditioning system afteruse is normal.

AT LEAST MONTHLY:

Check the tire pressure - check tires when cold,

not after a long drive. Check coolant level in the coolant recovery

reservoir.

Check the operation of all exterior lamps,including the brake lamps, turn signals andhazard warning flashers.

AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR: (I.E., EVERY SPRINGAND FALL)

Check radiator, heater and air-conditioning hosesfor leaks or damage.

Check windshield washer spray and wiperoperation. Check and replace worn wiper blades.

Check for worn tires and loose wheel lug nuts.

Check muffler, exhaust pipes, shields and clamps.

Check h eadlamp alignment.

Check the lap-shoulder belts for wear andfunction.

Check air pressure in the spare tire.

Inspect halfshaft dust boots.

AT LEAST ONCE A YEAR:

Lubricate all hinges, checks, latches, and alloutside key locks.

Lubricate door rubber weatherstrips.

Clean the body water drain holes.

Check the air conditioning system before thewarm weather season.

Check the power steering fluid level.

Inspect engine cooling system, hoses and clamps;and check coolant strength

Check the brake fluid level.

Check the battery connections.

Lubricate the transaxle controls and linkage.

If any of these conditions are noted, bring them tothe attention of your dealer or qualified servicetechnician as soon as possible.
