Car Clubs: saving time, money and CO2

A growing number of businesses and organisations across Scotland are choosing car clubs as a cost effective, convenient and environmentally friendly solution to business travel.

Car clubs offer unique benefits for businesses. By replacing expensive and inefficient business travel such as company cars, taxis and mileage reimbursement (grey fleet) with access to greener self-service vehicles, businesses can save money, time and CO2.

Car club schemes offer members the use of vehicles on a pay-as-you-drive basis without the hassle or costs of repairs, depreciation, MOTs, insurance, servicing and parking.

Schemes allow access to a variety of vehicles for the time that is needed, from an hour to a day, paying only for the hire time and the distance driven. Vehicles can be booked online or through an app and are located in convenient on-street locations.

Alternatively, dedicated vehicles can be installed in office locations for the exclusive use of staff.

There are two national car club operators in Scotland, Enterprise and Co-Wheels, and a number of community car clubs located across the country.

Car Clubs: saving time, money and CO2

Case Study: Siemens

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery replaced its 20-strong pool fleet with 14 dedicated Enterprise Car Club vehicles across its sites in Aberdeen and Lincoln, cutting its travel costs by 28% in six months.

The introduction of the car club helped Siemens achieve some of its key objectives including reducing the pool car fleet, reducing costs, improving vehicle utilisation and enhancing its use of digital processes. The vehicles are bookable by the hour or by the day, with employees going online or using a mobile app, instead of requiring the fleet team to manage the booking. They use their Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) smart ID cards to book and unlock the car club vehicles, which also allows Siemens to track who is booking the vehicles and for how long.

As a result, the company has already seen significant cost savings and changes to employee travel behaviour.

“Working with Enterprise is not just saving money, it’s also making our employees more productive and efficient and changing their behaviours. Many will now combine trips to multiple destinations, while being able to book the vehicles directly means we’ve been able to reassign the entire fleet team and move them to other work.

We’re looking at expanding the programme to other sites because of the success it’s already demonstrated. Enterprise has enabled us to move from an unmanaged solution to a managed one and provided exactly the technology-driven car club package we need.” Wayne Warburton, head of mobility services at Siemens UK
