Secondly, the Building which originally was a substantial suite offarm buildings, outstanding in characterm large in scale, especiallyin the context of Skye, illustrating all the qualities associatedwith good design in a rural setting and worthily typifying thearchitectural heritage of Scotland.

The buildings are stone built in uncoursed snecked rubble, a type ofwork adopted in districts where a highly stratified stone is readilyavai~able; such stones lending themselves to be easily squared. Withthese stones, horizontal bed joints are readily obtained but as thestone are of irregular depths there is a great tendency to obtain longvertical joints and a resultiDR instability. To prevent this, smallstones, termed snecks, are inserted where required and structuralstability is therefore maintained. The walls of the steading are builtin the best tradition of craftsmanship.

The Steading continued to be used for agricultural purposes until 1912but with the fabric of the building having little or no attention overmany decades the roofs and supporting timbers particularly deterioratedbadly.

A programme of restoration and refurbishment was instituted in 1913,carefully controlled to retain the existing character of the Sabhal butwith limited financial resourc~s. The resulting acheivements reflectwith credit the purposeful spirit, determination and resourcefulness ofthose inv1oved. With the restoration of a part of the country'sarchitectural heritage, a centre has been born in which the study oflinguistic and cultural heritage of Scotland can be promoted and pursued.

Combined with assistance from the Manpower Services Commission JobCreation Scheme restoration has continued and accelerated so that theSteading can now boast the following basic facilities:- a library, office administrative accomodation, three classrooms, a language lab,an exhibition room, kitchen and common room, toilet facilities, a shop

: and a reception hall.

Work yet to be financed and realised is the restoration of a major partof the roof, which is a matter of urgency; the proviRioa of a theatre/conference hall with adjacent ancillary accomodation t fire escape stairsand enclosures, workshop, stores, music room, additional toiletaccomodation, a re-siting and enlargement of the kitchen, a dining room, courtyard landscaping and finally in the adjacent cottage, alterationsto provide a dormitory block with the necessary facilities for studentsin residence.
