    SEOULBEATS:Keeping your pulse on K-pop

    by: Czarina Pauline Carando

Due to the demands of K-pop music and the popularity of K-pop bands in the Philippines, Filipino fanatics formed unified groups thatwould express their love for various K-pop artists. Philippine fangroups like Wonderful PH, Big Bang PH, Primadonna PH, SHINeeWorld PH and Super Junior PH were organized as fan bases whichaim to be recognized as the official fanclubs of the Filipino K-popfans. According to Cris Miralles, Human Resources Representativeof Super Junior United Philippines (SJUPH), their group aim to uniteall Super Junior (SuJu) fans to create a strong fan base for Super Junior in our country. SJUPH started around the last week of July

2008. The administrators from the four largest SuJu communitiesnamely SuJu Pinas, Super Junior Philippines, Super Junior Sahoeand Super Junior Fanatext Only gathered and formed it. It was thenformally launched at the eve of September 5, 2008 at exactly 11:00to match Koreas time of 12:00 for September 6, 2009. Miralles alsosaid that there has been no smooth lane paved for them during thegroups first year of existence.

We encountered problems and trials that made us rethink our decision of having this FC. Yet, when we see all those fansthat enjoyed the things we did, we knew it was worth everything,Miralles added.

SJUPH was easily embraced by most Filipino K-pop fansespecially those who love SuJu. Miralles confidently said that their group was accepted by Filipino SuJu fans because after all the yearsthe four main groups have gone through, one unified group cameabout where fellow Filipino Super Junior fans can communicate andshare experiences.

Miralles said, We are thankful to our other fandom friends because they were there to support us.

I want nobody, nobody but youthesong that caught every nook and crannyof the Philippines into K-pop addiction.

Nobody by the Wonder Girls proved thatSouth Korea can conquer even the most

    rural areas in the world.

SJUPH have 16 core members which plans, organizes and manages the group and itsactivities. Aspiring members qualificationsare honesty, trustworthiness and reliability. If you have those characteristics, you shouldgo and sign-up as a member of SJUPH.The group also organizes gatherings for itsmembers. They have two major events everyyear and during their first year, they came up

on having SJR and SJU as their main events.Meet-ups were planned to promote Super Junior through SuJu merchandises likealbums, posters, t-shirts etc. Members easilyget along with other members and Mirallessaid that there are a lot of cliques formed intheir group.

The bond the members shared witheach other was really good. They were ableto form new friendships as well as keep their current ones. We do not really interfere onhow our members act with each other because

we do promote on being true to ourselves,Miralles said.

According to Miralles, Filipinos willalways love K-pop because of its differenttake in music.

Its a given fact that we are a raceof people who loves music no matter whatlanguage it is. It also helps that KPOPsingers have interesting personalities whoseems a bit eccentric at first but grows on

you as time goes on, Miralles said.

We reiterate that we cant promisefans any compensation (material-wise) or anything that we cannot deliver. However, what we can offer as of now is a safe havenwhere you can spazz all you want about our dear boys, Miralles concluded.

Last November 27, 2009, KoreasArirang TV organizes the Korea-PhilippinesFriendship Festival to commemorate the60 th anniversary of peace between Koreaand the Philippines. The events hosts wereIsak(Korean DJ) and Luis Manzano(FilipinoDJ). It was held at the Cultural Center of thePhilippines (CCP) at 5 p.m. K-pop artistslike SHINee, Winterplay and Mighty Mouth

performed in front of over a thousand K-popfans. Tickets were free so a lot of fans took advantage of the opportunity to see their favorite K-pop artists.

Due to the overwhelming demandfrom K-pop fans to bring K-pop artists inthe Philippines, The First Philippine KPOPConvention is organized. It is a fund-raisingopportunity for Gawad Kalinga, a localnon-profit government organization aimedat providing less fortunate Filipinos withhomes to call their own. A petition regardingK-pop artists in the Philippines was bornout of the report from the Korean embassy.According to Kiejoo Kim, counsellor for theKorean Embassy in the Philippines, the planwill push through easily if Filipinos loudlyvoice out their demand using signaturedrives, blogs, surveys and other platforms.

I think if there is certain, a greatnumber of audience, I think that should bea very convincing rationale that we reallyhave to bring them here, Kim verified.

Various Philippine K-pop Fanclubs, partners and sponsors participatedin the said event. However, tickets weresold for P130 each. The event took placeat Starmall, Alabang, December 5, 2009at 10 a.m. Contests and games such asK-star sing and dance contest and K-osplaycontest were organized. K-pop fans got thechance to purchase K-pop merchandises atthe different K-pop groups stalls managed

by Fan club heads.Pauline Ann Cruz, 18, a Filipino

Mass Media student from DLSU-Manila,started being a K-pop fan last September 2008. Her sister introduced her to thevibrant and artistic world of Koreanmusic. She loves K-pop because of theartists, the beat and meaning of songsand the dance steps. Moreover, it helpsher relax, be entertained and widensher knowledge about Korean music andlanguage. She has a lot of favorite K-popartists including SHINee, DBSK, BoA,4Minute and Chung Lim. Despite her

K-pop fanaticism, she isnt a member of any K-pop club in the Philippines.

She said that she only registered inSHINee Forum International. Cruz showsher K-pop fanaticism through attendingK-pop events, buying albums and goodslike pins, t-shirts and penlights. Sherecently attended The Korea-PhilippinesFriendship Festival at CCP and enjoyed

because it was the chance to see her favorite K-pop artist, SHINee, performlive.

When asked how much she lovesK-pop, Cruz confidently exclaimed,Words cannot describe my love for K-pop!

Filipinos are very fond of listeningto K-pop songs even though they mostof them didnt understand what the songsays. Filipino fans, however, try to learnKorean language or Hangul in order tounderstand K-pop songs.

I am already familiar with someKorean words and phrases. Whenever Ilisten to new K-pop songs, I usually searchthe internet for its English translation,Cruz said.

The popularity of K-pop conqueredthe music air waves all over thePhil ippines and is now evidently conqueringand caprutring the hearts of every music lover around the globe.

Cruz con dentlyexclaimed, Wordscannot describe mylove for K-pop!

In Kobe, there is shopping mecca called Porto Bazaar whereyou can get designer and branded pieces sold for much less.

In Hyogo (speci cally located near my place in Kakogawa), there isan outlet shop that sells heaps of branded and cool pieces from Edwin, Sev-enteen and more with prices that range from 200-4000 (about $2-$40).

    Vintage shops

Second hand shops in Japan are everywhere, and since the economy downturn, even more so.

Vintage shops in Japan are great because they seems to sell the best of design-ers goods for next-to-nothing. Here are some of the shops in Kakogawa that sells brand-ed pieces from Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Dior, Coach,Louis Vuitton and even local labels such as Cinema Club, Ingni and many more.

    The one hundred-Yen shop

Or should I say, the one hundred and ten yen shop? (since it's always has an ad-ditional 10% tax). Daiso is a popular store that sells everything in 100 and there'sone located in every part of Japan. You could nd everything here from food, of -

ce ware, school supplies, garden tools, car accessories and of course beauty and fash -ion goods such as make-up, tights, stockings, gloves, knit materials and hair accessories.
