What are soft or carbonateddrinks

•  They are non alcoholic water baseddrink that are optionally acidulated,sweetened and carbonated.

• Some carbonated drinks alsocontains caffeine which is brown incolor for e.g. coke.

Major Players in this sector-Globally

• The global soft drink industry is highly concentrated, being largelycontrolled by the two multinational companies; Coca Cola andPepsiCo.

•Coca Cola leads the carbonated soft drink market in mostcountries in the world with 60% of the global cola market with itsflagship Coca-Cola brand. Other notable players include CadburySchweppes .

• Most of the sales of soft drinks take placeduring summers while just 5-6% of totalsales take place in winters. In summers thehigh season lasts for 70-75 days, whichcontributes more than 50% of the totalyearly sales.

• it is not uncommon for soft drinks in India to have a mix of at least three, up to six types of pesticides, yet the samplesdisplayed the fact that the soft drinks recorded a thresholdwhich was 24 times higher than the normal level of pesticides, allowed by the norms of the Bureau of IndianStandards.

• Thus, the average level of pesticides was 11.85 parts perbillion, while the legal standard is 0.5 parts per billion.

In addition to that, it is also reflected the presence of carcinogens and neurotoxins that are also much higherthan the Bureau of Indian Standards allows.

High Fructose corn syrup

High Fructose corn syrup(HFCS) are used assweetener in most of the carbonated softdrinks as it is viable for soft drinkcompanies

According to Researchers at RutgersUniversity in New Brunswick, New Jersey

have found evidence that soft drinkssweetened with high-fructose corn syrup(HFCS) may contribute to the developmentof diabetes, particularly in children.
