Rieter – Competence in cardingSince 1981 more than 15,000 cards of the C-Series have been produced and deliveredto customers around the globe. Rieter’s goal to steadily increase productivity withoutcompromising the quality has always beenthe main challenge of the development efforts.

In order to fulfill this demanding goal, Rieter introduced the integrated grindingsystem IGS for cards.The IGS system guarantees consistentcarding quality throughout the lifetime of the cylinder wire and flats pins.

C 60 – From tradition to innovationTradition leads to experience and experiencecombined with research leads to knowledge.Real innovation is the application of this soundknowledge to meet the requirements in ourcompetitive world. The C 60 card is meant tomeet today’s as well as future demands.

New geometry for productivity andqualityProduction increase with top sliver quality isa constant challenge. The answer to this is the C 60 card with its revolutionary concept. The C 60 has an entirely redesigned geome-try. The main differences are:• Increased working width from 1000 mm to

1500 mm for a 50% larger carding area• Reduced cylinder diameter

These two measures allow an increasedproduction without compromising the sliverand end product quality.The reduced cylinder diameter results in ahigher cylinder speed and a higher cardingprecision. Due to the increased centrifugal forces, thetrash reduction capability is significantlyimproved. This is of extreme importance inthe case of rotor spinning applications.The increased carding area combined withhigher precision leads to a better overall card-ing result.

Optimal material preparationThe integrated chute feed of the C 60 hasbeen designed for perfect material preparation,which means small fiber tufts in an even mat.

Gentle but effective material openingThe integrated fine opener in the chute withfeed trough and adjustable roll speed pro-vides gentle but effective fiber opening. Thisshifting of opening from the cleaning ma-chines to the card gives some definite advan-tages:• Lower nep increase due to the fiber trans-

port• Gentle opening due to low production rates

These well-opened tufts are fundamental foran effective carding, for nep and trash reduc-tion and for an increased lifetime of the cardclothing.

Active compressionAn integrated fan provides active compres-sion of the fiber material, which is the basisfor an even and uniform mat structure. Thisagain is essential for:• A permanent high sliver quality• Low count variations• Low CV values• A high production efficiency

EconomyThe fine mat structure reduces the operatingcosts for 2 reasons. The lifetime of the cardclothing is increased by up to 50% andreduces machine downtime. This benefitsmaintenance cost and productivity.

Most favorable condition for everyapplicationDepending upon the end product – a syntheticyarn, a very fine cotton yarn, a rotor yarn or a yarn from regenerated fibers – the processrequirements are different. At the same time,the feasible card production rate may varyfrom 45 to 220 kg/h.One process may require gentle fiber openingand nep reduction as top priority, while an-other process may place more importance onhigh productivity and trash extraction. The C 60 permits optimal configuration, nomatter what the mill requirements are.

High raw material yieldIn carded and combed ring yarn applications,as well as for regenerated fibers, it is impor-tant to make full use of the supplied fiberproperties. Extensive research with the 1-rolllicker-in design confirms a gentle fiber open-ing and reduced fiber extraction, which ismost economical. This assures that fibercharacteristics like length and strength arepreserved and therefore contribute to a highyarn quality.

High productivity for rotor yarnapplicationAs the tendency towards higher rotor speedscontinues, the use of smaller rotor diametersbecomes necessary. Minimizing the amountof trash particles in the sliver is of vitalimportance for the successful use of smallrotors.

In this case a 3-roll licker-in module, whichhas been developed for maximum trashremoval while maintaining the most gentlefiber treatment possible, is the appropriatesolution.Carding segments and mote knives at allrollers efficiently extract trash particles.As a result, production rates up to 220 kg perhour are achieved for rotor yarn applications.

Flexible systemThe type of licker-in module can be changedeasily within minutes. Maintenance downtimeis reduced and work is greatly simplifiedthrough the exchange of complete licker-inmodules at the cards.

Pre- and post-carding areaCarding units separate trash, dust and shortfibers in the pre- and post-carding zones.Guiding elements and the associated moteknives are responsible for the extraction of theimpurities. Different sets of carding elementsare available to meet the requirements for aspecific yarn type.

Main carding areaAfter the pre-carding zone, the fibers enter theactive carding area. Mill trials showed that thehigher centrifugal forces support the separa-tion and extraction of trash, short fibers andseed-coat fragments.

Integrated Grinding System (IGS)The inevitable wear of the card clothing be-comes an even more crucial issue with anyhigh production card. The Integrated GrindingSystem (IGS) – a unique Rieter feature –solves this fact fundamentally by keeping thewires sharp at all times.

The advantages are:• Constant sliver quality over the lifetime of

• Strongly reduced maintenance load• Prolonged lifetime for cylinder wires and

therefore very economical• Ideally suited for the latest wire technolo-

gies which are difficult to grind manually

The flat moduleThe uniquely designed flat module, consist-ing of 79 precise flats, guarantees a highdegree of nep and impurity removal. Themodular concept allows a complete exchangeof the flat module in a very short time. It isalso possible to change single flats on themachine if necessary.

Sliver formationThe newly designed doffer securely gathersthe web from the cylinder.

The subsequent sliver formation is made by two cross aprons, which gather up the weband delivers the sliver close to the nippingpoint of the take-off rolls.

Easy handlingIn case of a sliver break, the operator simplyactivates a lever and inserts the new sliverinto the can coiler or into the drawframemodule.

Medium term levellingThe feeding trough measures the mat thick-ness of the chute feed. According to thedetermined values, the feed roller speed of thecard is automatically adapted to maintain auniform sliver count.

Long term levellingThe sliver count is measured by a disc rollerpair. The measured signals are processed andused for the control of the chute system.

Process integrationThe integration of a drawframe does not only improve economy but also productivity.Even yarn quality is improved in the case of a direct OE process in certain applications.The drawframe module is available in twoversions: The C 60 SB without autolevellersystem and the C 60 RSB with the well-provenRieter autoleveller system. Depending on yarn count, raw material andspinning technology, it is possible to reducethe number of conventional drawframepassages from two to one (C 60 SB) or fromone to zero (Direct process with C 60 RSB).

TechnologyThe C 60 RSB is equipped with a digitalshort-term levelling system. The mass of the C 60 card sliver is scanned with the well-proven principle of tongue-and-grooverollers. The pneumatic loading of the rollersguarantees constant scanning. Based on the measured values, the levellingprocessor calculates a nominal value for thehigh-dynamic servo drive. It is transferred atthe exact instant when the measured piece ofcard sliver arrives at the levelling point withinthe main drafting zone.

Maximum levellingThe Rieter autoleveller system ensures topsliver quality for the downstream processes.The decisive difference is achieved by level-ling 100% of the sliver whether in the runningor doffing mode.

C 60 – Revolutionary designIn addition to creating a modern and attractiveappearance for the C 60, extensive ergonomicdesign ideas have been integrated to ensuremaximum user friendliness and minimummachine downtime.

IGS-systemToday the main reason for machine downtimein carding is the necessary sharpening of thecard wires. Production losses due to grindinghave been eliminated with the introduction ofthe IGS system.The IGS system improves the sliver qualityand even prolongs the lifetime of the cylinderwire and the flats pins.

Easy exchange of modulesThe exchange of the licker-in and the flats aswell as the rewiring of the doffer are time con-suming maintenance duties with conventionalcards.The modular construction of the C 60 reducesthese downtimes to never before achievedminimums. All three modules can easily beexchanged with optional spare modules.Only one maintenance worker is necessary for each of these duties. For example, theexchange of the licker-in module can be com-pleted in less than 90 minutes.

With the IGS system and the modular ma-chine concept, Rieter has achieved a majorstep towards eliminating machine downtimewhile improving the consistency of sliverquality.

Economical productionThe C 60 card sets new standards in produc-tivity and quality. Economy completes thisstrength to a harmonic entirety. A whole set ofmeasures assures these important features.

More production with less floor spaceThe dimensions of a spinning mill are definedby various factors. Depending on the yarncount, either the quantity of end spinning ma-chines or the preparatory equipment definesthe width of the spinning mill.The high production potential of the C 60permits a more economical building layout.(Example at right: Ne 7, 100% CO,raw material input = 1070 kg/houryarn production = 1000 kg/hour)The direct OE process with the integrateddrawframe results in the most efficient yarnproduction system. Capital and productioncost are reduced to the maximum possible.

Minimized machine downtimeThe machine concept with the licker-in, flatand doffer module makes maintenance easyand reduces the machine downtime. The IGSsystem again reduces downtime and mainte-nance cost to a never experienced minimum.

Excellence based on factsEconomy is based on figures and facts.Investment, personnel, energy and mainte-nance costs as well as productivity need to be considered to achieve a high degree ofeconomic excellence. Challenge our expertiseon your specific project and ask for figuresand facts, i.e. production costs per kg yarn.The personnel requirements calculated for the mill example below are 0.514 hours peroperator for 100 kilograms of yarn (HOK),which is an extremely low value.
