Forcing a card-Method 1 1. Get a member of the audience toshuffle the pack well.

    2. As they hand it back to you, glance atthe bottom card.

    3. Holding the pack in your left hand, useyour forefinger to pull the bottom card(which you've looked at) back about acentimetre from the front edge of thepack.

    4. Begin to deal from the bottom of thepack, putting the cards face up on thetable. Be sure to hold on to the verybottom card! Tell the audience to shoutstop, and that the next card you putdown will be their secret card whichyou will later find.

    5. When someone shouts stop, bring outthe card you have been holding backand slam it face down on the table.

    6. Tell the audience to look at the card, put it back in the pack, and shufflewhile you turn your back.

    7. You can now look through the packand find their chosen card.

    Variation

This trick can be very effective if you deal fromthe bottom of the pack and when the audienceshouts stop, you slam down the card and shoutout what it is. You can then see theiramazement as they turn the card over and seeyou were right!

    Forcing a card-

Method 2 1. Fan the pack out in your hand with the

cards facing downwards.2. Ask a member of the audience to come

and select a card. As they select it,open the pack up a little and look at thebottom card in the top half of the pack.Lets say for this example it is the aceof spades.

    3. Ask the person to replace their card inthe gap, close the pack, and get

    someone to cut it.

    4. The chosen card will be the one belowthe ace of spades. You can go throughthe pack and find the card, chattingwhile you do so. To add mystery, spread the pack out on the table and

say things like "I think it's black, yes,it's black...." to add mystery. It mightsound quite sad, but it adds mysteryand makes it harder to guess how youdid it!

    AlexisNethercleft

Four Aces 1. Arrange the pack so that the four acesare on top. Shuffle the pack in front ofthe audience, but make sure you keepthe four aces on top.

    2. Ask a member of the audience to comeand cut the pack four times from rightto left, putting the top quarter of the

pack (which has the four aces in) onthe right, the next quarter to the left of itand so on.

    3. Ask the person to take three cardsfrom the top of the left hand pile andput them to the bottom, and then totake three cards from the top and putone on each of the other three piles.

    4. Ask them to repeat the process withthe other three piles.

    5. Ask the person to turn the top card ofeach of the piles over. Magic! They'reall aces!

    AlexisNethercleft

Kings to therescue! This trick is designed for children.

    1. Before you start: Remove the fourKings, Queens and Jacks from thepack, and place one of each on top ofthe pack without anyone knowing.

    2. Place the pack face up in front of youand begin to tell the following story:

"There was once a block of three flats.

The pack of cards represents thisblock.

    3. In each flat lives a beautiful woman. One in the top flat (put a Queen facedown on top of the pack), one in themiddle flat (put a Queen somewhere inthe middle of the pack), and one in thebottom flat (put the last Queen at thebottom of the pack).

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    3/52

    4. One night, three robbers broke in. Onewent to the top flat (put a Jack on thetop of the pack), one went to themiddle flat (put a Jack somewhere inthe middle of the pack), and one wentto the bottom flat (put the last Jack at

the bottom of the pack).5. The trouble was, the robbers weren't

very good at their jobs, and they madea lot of noise! The women startedscreaming (demonstrate, if you don'tmind embarrasing yourself a bit!). Theyscreamed so loudly, that threepolicemen heard them and came totheir rescue. One rushed to the top flat(put a King on top of the pack), onerushed to the middle flat (put a Kingsomewhere in the middle of the pack),and one rushed to the bottom flat (put

the last King at the bottom of thepack)."

    6. Ask a member of the audience to cutthe pack.

    7. Begin to deal the cards out face up,saying "I do hope the police got therein time to catch the robbers."Somewhere in the middle of the pack, three Kings, Queens, and Jacks willcome out one after the other. Thepolice did catch the robbers!

Forcing a card-method 3 This is one of the more complicated methods offorcing a card, but also one of the most

effective. You will need an opaquehandkerchief (a duster works well if you don'thave one!)

    1. Get a member of the audience toshuffle the pack and steal a glance atthe top card. If you like you can havethe card you want to use on top of thepack to start with and then do a falseshuffle yourself, making sure you keepthe card on top. For this example, we'll

call the card on top the ace of spades.2. Using your handkerchief cover the

pack which should be face down inyour left hand.

    3. As you cover the pack with thehandkerchief, turn it over so the bottomcard is facing up.

    4. Ask someone to cut the pack towherever they like under the

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    4/52

handkerchief, and explain that the topcard of the part of the pack they cut towill be their card, which they mustn'tshow to you.

    5. As they take what they think is the tophalf of the pack off, turn the remainder

back over in your hand. The card whichyou know at the top of the pile is nowon top.

    6. Take the handkerchief and it's contentsfrom the volunteer and put it to oneside.

    7. Ask the volunteer to look at the topcard without showing you. He thinks itis a random card which he has cut to,but it is of course the ace of spades.

    8. You can now put both halves of thepack back together (be careful to takethe other half out of the handkerchief

the right way round) and get thevolunteer to replace his card andshuffle the pack.

    9. You can now use any mysterious wayyou like of going through the pack andfinding the chosen card.

    AlexisNethercleft

Forcing a card-method 4 This trick needs to be done sitting behind atable. It can look very effective if done properly,

but needs a lot of practice to stop it lookingamateurish and obvious (like it does when I doit)!!

    1. Fan the pack out face down and ask avolunteer to select a card and look at it.

    2. Ask someone to shuffle the pack.3. When the volunteer is looking at his

card, take the remainder of the packand turn the top and bottom cardsover.

    4. Turn the pack over so that the cardwith the back side up is on top.

    5. Hold the pack closely together in frontof you. The volunteer will see the backof a card on top of the pack, and the

face of a card on the bottom of thepack. Ask her to replace the card in thepack.

    6. Take the pack down to your lap againand pick out the chosen card. It will bethe only one that is face down!

    AlexisNethercleft

Making a card change placeswith one in a moving pack This isn't a trick on its own, but it's a veryeffective way to end any card forcing trick.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    5/52

    1. When you've found the chosen card inthe pack, pick it out along with the onebelow it, holding them closely togetherso that they look like a single card.

    2. Hold the two cards up to the audience, looking pleased with yourself. Askthem if the card you're holding up istheir card-it won't be!!

    3. Look heartbroken and replace thecards on top of the pack.

    4. Say something like-"Wait, I think I canput this right" and take the top card (thereal chosen card) and put it face downon the table.

    5. Ask the member of the audience tohold the card down so it "can't escape".

    6. Put the pack close to the card and fanthe top of the pack with your finger tomake a rushing noise.

    7. Say "good, you didn't hold it hardenough, I've made you're card jumpacross"

    8. Ask the person to look at the card. They'll be astonished to see it haschanged into their chosen card!

    AlexisNethercleft

Forcing a card-method 5 1. Ask someone to shuffle the pack andhand it back to you.

    2. Secretly take a peek at the bottomcard. Let's call it the ace of spades.

    3. Ask someone to choose a card fromthe pack and show everyone except foryourself.

    4. Ask them to put the card on top of thepack and cut the pack a couple oftimes.

    5. Fan the pack out in your hands. Thechosen card will be the one below theace of spades.

    AlexisNethercleft

X-ray vision 1 It is very obvious how this trick is done unlessyou do it quickly and smoothly.

    1. Get someone to shuffle the pack andpass it back to you.

    2. Cut the pack and secretly look at thebottom card. Let's call it the ace ofspades.

    3. Put the pack behind your back and putthe ace of spades face up on top of thepack.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    6/52

    4. Bring the pack back in front of you sothe audience can see the ace ofspades. They will think the whole packis facing so that you can only see theback of the cards.

    5. Look as though you are squinting to

see through the pack and say "I cansee through the pack to the ace ofspades". While you are doing all this, look at the face of the next card in thepack. Let's call it the jack of hearts

    6. Close your eyes, bring the card to thefront of the pack so the audience cansee it. Open your eyes and say thatyou can see through to the jack ofhearts.

    7. Repeat the process until the audienceis convinced of your X-Ray Vision.

ESP Preparation1. Divide the deck into 26 black cards,

    followed by 26 red cards.

    Performance

    1. Pick an audience member and tellthem that you selected them becauseyou sensed their telekinetic powers.Say you will try to duplicate the cardidentification studies the Russians

used in their ESP experiments in the1950's, and that anything over a 75%success rate at predicting card colorswould be unprecedented.

    2. Take a card off the top of the pack andask your subject to concentrate, thensay either black or red, depending onwhat they think the card's color is.

    3. Repeat step two until 26 cards havebeen selected. Make sure to keepcount of the cards as you separatethem into two piles as per yoursubject's instructions.

    4. After 26 cards have been selected, youwill have two piles of black cards.Pause and say that to keep repetitionfrom being an influincing factor in thestudy (which might invalidate it), youwill now switch piles, putting the cardsidentified as red onto the pile that hadbeen for blacks, and vice versa. Thecards you are dealing are now all red.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    7/52

    5. When you are done, what you have istwo piles, each with one portion(probably close to half) all reds insequence followed by all blacks insequence.

    6. Take a minute or two to build

suspense., saying that if they do haveESP, as you suspected, there shouldbe sequences of five and as many assix cards in a row in sequence brokenup by the invariable odd cards of theother color, telling them not to bedisappointed if it has not happened.

    7. When you reveal the cards, mostpeople will be amazed as you turn overred after red after red, then black afterblack after black. 100% accuracy. ESPindeed.

This trick is all in the banter, but I have rarelyfailed to amaze with it.

Guess Rising Cards 1. Fan the pack out face up in your handsand look at the fifth card from the top.

    2. Say you're going to pick three cards, saying the name of the card that is fifthfrom the top.

    3. Then pick the other three cards thatare the same number as the fifth cardfrom the top. Set them to the side, in alittle stack of three.

    4. Say you are going to seperate the

    cards.

    5. Lay two cards from the top of the maindeck on the table, then one of the threecards, then two more from the top ofthe deck, then another one of thethree, then one from the top of themain deck, then the last one of thethree, ask a member of the audience totap the deck three times, then flip thetop three cards over!!!

SecretNumber Contributor's note:"I saw MaxMavin do this one and he explained

    how to do it."

    1. You will need ten (10) cardsfrom a deck. Any suit anyvalue.

    2. Give the cards to anaudience member.

    3. Have the member fan out thecards.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    8/52

    4. They should then select acard but they should NOTremove it from the pack.

    5. Have them count over fromthe RIGHT to the selectedcard. This will be their secret

number.6. Have them close the pack

and hand it back to you.

    7. Move four (4) cards one at atime from the bottom of thepack to the top. (do it behindyour back or under a clothfor show)

    8. Give the cards to anotheraudience member and havethe first member tell thesecond what the secretnumber was.

    9. Have the second membermove cards one at a timefrom the bottom to the topcounting until the secretnumber is reached.

10.Take the cards back and dosomething for show but DONOTHING to the pack.

    TRICKY PART BE CAREFUL!

11.Give the cards back to the

second member and tell himto take the top card and put iton the bottom. He shouldthen take the NEXT top cardand put it on the table. Takethe Next top card and put iton the bottom.

12.Tell him to continuealternating this way untilthere is only one (1) card leftwhich should be the selectedcard.

Trixter Cutting force 1. Get a volunteer to shuffle the deckand then hand it back to you. You cutthe deck.

    2. Tell the volunteer to pick a card fromthe lower half of the deck and look atit. They should then put it back on topof the bottom half. While they arelooking at their card, look at thebottom card on the top half of the

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    9/52

deck. For example, lets say its thefour of dimonds.

    3. Join the two halves of the packtogether, and then shuffle by takingsome bottom cards and putting themon the top(make sure not to seperate

the four of dimonds from therechosen card).

    4. Now go from the top dealing out thecards face up. When you see the fourof dimonds you know the next card istheirs. Point it out and wow you areright!

Harry I know the card behind my back 1. Get someone to shuffle a pack ofcards. Take the pack back and turn iton its side. Glance at the bottomcard.

    2. Put the cards behind your back andsplit the pack so one half is facing inthe opposite direction.

    3. Bring the pack back in front of youand name the bottom card you saw.Show the audience the card on theoriginal bottom, making sure theycan't see the other side (which is theopposite way around). While you arenaming the card, remember the cardon the other side of the pack.

    4. Put the cards back behind your back, and place the card you have justnamed in the middle.

    5. Bring the cards back in front of you, showing the card you have justremembered, and hiding the one onthe other side. Name the card.

    6. Repeat the trick as many times asyou like!

Jeff One-Way Deck Preparation:1. Take a deck of cards whose back is

not symetrical (the picture looksdifferent upside down) and line themup so they all face the samedirection.

    Performance:

    1. Shuffle the deck, being careful tokeep the backs facing the same way.

    2. Fan the deck out and ask someone to

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    10/52

    take a card.

    3. Turn the deck around and ask theperson to put his card back in.

    4. Shuffle the deck again once or twice.Look through the deck and find hiscard.(It will be the one facing the

    other way.)

IMPORTANT: keep an eye on the person tomake sure he doesn't turn his card around.

Variation:To make the trick less obvious, look for cheap cards that are supposed to besymetrical but aren't. Arrange them so the fatmargins are on one side, and the thin onesare on the other. You can also mark thecorner with a pen (same color as thebacking).

    JesseBrown

You Picked It! Preparation:1. Place all four sevens on top of the

    deck.

    Performance:

    1. Place the card's back in the box andapproach your volunteer.

    2. Remove the cards from the box andhand the top four (the sevens) to thevolunteer. Tell them not to look at thecards.

    3. Now, tell them you are going to askthem five questions, and theyshouldn't think about the questions, but answer as fast as they can! (Thisis the key to the trick)

    4. Begin with the following list ofquestions asked rapidly after eachanswer is given.

1+1..... They will answer 2.2+2..... They will answer 4.4+4..... They will answer 8.8+8..... They will answer 16A number between 12 and 5.....

This will catch most people off guard. They will think about this for a secondand 98% will say 7!

    5. When and if they do say seven, askthem to turn over the cards in their

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

hand. The four sevens will be shownand, because you haven't touchedthe cards all the way through thetrick, they will be astounded at yourpsychic powers to influence theirmind!!!

    AndreChiasson

ESP Trick 2 1. Tell the audience that you need to cutthe deck EXACTLY in half, and thatto ensure that it is exactly half, youneed to count out 26 cards.

    2. Tell them that to ensure the odds ofthis trick working are slim, they are towatch you count 26 cards out, faceup, and ensure 4 cards of the samevalue are not together. Eg. 4 kings, 43's, etc...- *** this is their diversion*** -

    3. Count the 26 cards from the top ofthe deck face up onto the table andremember the 7th card. Keep the pileneat so as not to mix anything up

    4. When you have counted out 26cards, ask the audience if they aresatisfied there were no 4 in a rowtogether. If they are not satisfied, shuffle the deck and start again.

    5. Now place the counted pile UNDERthe uncounted pile.

    6. Tell the audience:"I will now need to turn over 3 cards -Each card MUST be a 10 value -Kings, Jacks and Queens are worth10, Ace is worth 1, and all othernumbers are their value. - eg, a 5 ofhearts is worth 5. If the cards I turnover are worth under 10, I will addcards to make the value a 10".

    7. Turn the top card over and put itdown face up. If it is a K,Q,J,10, sayokay that is 10. If it is ANY other, addadditional cards, counting each asbeing worth 1, to "make it" 10. eg. if itis a 5, take cards off the top of thedeck, one at a time and put them nextto that card counting to 10 as you go.So you should have 5 cards sittingnext to the 5. Leave them face downas they are not important.

    8. Do the same for the other 3 cards, one at a time.

    9. Now ask the audience to add thevalue of the 3 face up cards - Eg. if itis a "K 3 7", the value is 20.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    12/52

10.Pretend to think hard or chant orwhatever. Remember the 7th cardfrom when you wer 'cutting' the deck?Tell the audience the 20th (orwhatever the total value of the threeface up cards was) card from the top

of the deck remaining is the"(whatever the card you rememberedis)". Count that number of cards offthe deck to prove it! This will work nomatter what the 3 cards turned overare!! - The 7th card will ALWAYScome up on the value of those 3cards, no matter how close to the topor bottom!!!!!!!!!

Civil War 1 Sanded Deck Force Preparation:Sand the corners off a deck of cards, just

enough so it's clear to you which corner issanded, but the audience can't tell it's sandedat all.

    Performance:

    1. Get a volunteer to pick a card fromthe sanded deck.

    2. Once they have looked at the card, instruct them to insert it into the deckwith one of its short edges going intothe long edge of the deck (forming a

    T shape).

    3. You should then turn the card so thatit lies the same way as the rest of thedeck, whichever way the sandedcorners do notline up.

    4. You can now shuffle or cut the deckas you please, before pulling out thechosen card (it's corner will stick outfrom the sanded corner of the pack).

SAM Simple 'Double Up" Illusion Preparation:Place the Two of Diamonds and Three ofHearts on the top of the deck, and the Two ofHearts and Three of Diamonds on the bottomof the deck.

    Performance:

    1. Briefly show the top two cards to theaudience, and replace them where

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    13/52

    they were.

    2. Do the same with the bottom twocards.

    3. Place the bottom two cardssomewhere in the middle of the deck.

    4. Show the top two cards.

The idea of this trick is that the audiencethinks that the two pairs of cards are thesame, and have been jumping around in thedeck.

    AlexisNethercleft

Jaw Clencher Preperation:This trick needs to be done with the help of a'confederate'. It should be discussed andpractised beforehand. The confederate willleave the room whilst a card is chosen.He/she will then come back in and, bycounting the number of times you clench your

    jaw, name the chosen card.

    Performance:

    1. Your confederate is outside of theroom. For effect, you could get amember of the audience to wait withthem to prove that they haven't seenthe card being chosen.

    2. Shuffle the deck, or get a volunteer toshuffle it for you.

    3. Get a volunteer to choose a card, show it to you and the audience, andput it back in the deck. They canshuffle the deck if they like.

    4. Bring your confederate back in. Theyshould stand behind you and resttheir fingers on your temples.

    5. You now clench your jaw a pre-defined number of times to let theconfederate know what the chosencard was. Here is a recommendedcode:

First identify the suit in CHaSeD order

    Clubs 1 clench

    Hearts 2 clenches

    Spades 3 clenches

    Diamonds 4 clenches

Now, after a brief pause, identify the value of

    Ace 1 clench

    2 2 clenches

    3 3 clenches

    4 4 clenches

    5 5 clenches

    6 6 clenches

    7 7 clenches

    8 8 clenches

    9 9 clenches

    10 10 clenches

    Jack 11 clenches

    Queen 12 clenches

    King 13 clenches

    6. Your confederate can now identifythe chosen card.

Double Card Recognition with analternated deck

    Preperation:

Arrange the deck so that red cards alternatewith black ones and discuss the trick withyour confederate.

    Performance:

    1. The confederate should leave theroom.

    2. Ask several spectators to give theordered deck a complete cut. Theyshould not look at the faces of thecards.

    3. After the deck has been cut a fewtimes, ask the last volunteer who cutit to take the top card and commit it tomemory.

    4. Ask another volunteer to take the

next top card and commit it tomemory.

    5. Ask the first volunteer to replace hiscard on top of the deck, and then thesecond volunteer to replace his cardon top of the first's. The two cards arenow reversed.

    6. Once again, have the deck cutseveral times.

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    15/52

    7. Explain that "because two peoplehave chosen a card, we must have apile for each person."

    8. Proceed to deal the cards into twopiles. Each pile will be of a singlecolour, except for the chosen card.

    9. Call your confederate back into theroom, and instruct the two volunteersto take one half of the deck each tohim.

10.The confederate takes one half of thedeck in each hand, and places one toone side.

11.Fanning through the other pile, theyshould look like they areconcentrating fiercly. Actually, theyare looking for the one card of theopposite colour, which they shouldput face down in front of them.

12.The confederate should now pick upthe other pile and add it to the cardsthey are already holding. Once againthe card of the opposite colour isfound and placed face down in frontof them.

13.The deck is now casually shuffled bythe confederate, as they muttersomething to do with "vibrations" fromthe cards. This shuffle will ensure thatthere's no clue as to how the trickwas performed.

14.Each volunteer names their card, andthe confederate turns over theappropriate card as they do so.

John Read The Four Jacks PreparationBefore the performance take all four Jacksout of the pack, and carefully place fourcards behind them so that when the four

jacks are fanned out to the audience the

audience can't see the cards behind.

    Performance

    1. Show audience the 4 Jacks, concealing cards behind

    2. Place rest of the pack facedown ona table.

    3. Tell them 4 Jacks went to rob ahouse, and place the 4 jacksconcealing the cards behind on topof the rest of the pack (whichrepresents the house).

    4. Say the first went to the cellar, andplace the top card at the bottom ofthe pack not showing the audience.Remember, the card is not really a

jack it is one of the concealed cards.

    5. The second went to the Groundfloor-place the next top card on thebottom..

Card Vibrations Preparation:Arrange the ace to ten of any suit (eg.diamonds) on the bottom of the pack, withthe ace on the very bottom.

    Performance:

    1. Fan out the cards face down,

keeping the lower cards bunchedtogether, and ask the spectator topick a card.

    2. Hand him/her the rest of the packand ask them to place their card ontop. Then ask the spectator tomake a complete cut, burrying theirchosen card. (Usually the spectatorwill cut about halfway and notdisturb the cards at the bottom).

    3. Ask the spectator to turn the packface up and touch the top card, saying that you will sense its

vibrations. Then, with the pack stillface up, ask the spectator to makeanother complete cut.

    4. Keep asking the spectator to cutthe pack until any of the cards youprepared at the beginning appearson top (ie. the ace to ten of yourchosen suit)

    5. Ask the spectator to turn the packback over, and depending on thecard that was on the top (now onthe bottom) you can tell how manycards down their chosen card is:

    Ace = 1 card down Two = 2 cardsdown Three = 3 cards down Four =4 cards down Five = 5 cards downSix = 6 cards down Seven = 7cards down Eight = 8 cards downNine = 9 cards down Ten = 10cards down

    6.

Turn the pack over so that it isface down in your hand anddeal the cards out row by row, face up as you did before. Nowthe cards that were in the 1strow are in the 4th column, those that were in the 2nd roware in the 3rd column, thosethat were in the 3rd row are arein the 2nd column, and thosethat were in the 4th row arenow in the first column.

    7. Ask the person to tell you againwhich row his card again. Younow know which card it is.

    8. Pick up the cards in any orderyou like, putting them facedown in your hand, butremember how many cardsfrom the top the chosen card is.

by counting as you place thecards down.:

10.Ask the audience member topoint at a cross. If it is the crosswith the card in, pick up theother three crosses. If not, pickup the cross they are pointingat and repeat the procedure.

11.When you are down to one

cross, ask the audiencemember to point at a card. If itis not their chosen card, pick itup and repeat the procedure. Ifit is, pick up the other threecards and turn the card over.Magic! Their chosen card isalways the last on the table. The member of the audiencewon't know how their card isalways the last on the table. The truth is, they've beenpointing at crosses, but you've

been picking up and leavingexactly what you want!

AlexisNethercleft David Lovel in yon Abbey This trick requires a good memory and alot of practice, but the results are worth it!

    1. Deal ten pairs of cards face uponto a table.

    2. Ask a member of the audience tochoose a pair and rememberthem, without telling you.

    3. Ask the person to pick up all the

cards, in any order they like, butkeeping them in pairs.

    4. Take the twenty cards and dealthem out, putting cards in thesame pair on matching letters inthe following code. For example, put the first two cards on the twoD's, the next two on the two A'setc. It doesn't matter which orderyou do it in, as long as you keep

the cards in pairs (you could startwith the two B's). It is important tomemorise the code and make itlook as if you are putting the cardsdown in a completely randomorder.

    Row 1 D A V I D

    Row 2 L O V E L

    Row 3 I N Y O N

    Row 4 A B B E Y

    5. Ask the member of the audience totell you which row(s) their cardsare in. If they point to the first rowonly, you know the cards must be

the two D's. If they point to thesecond row only, they must be thetwo L's. If they point to the first andthird rows, they must be the two I'setc. You can amaze your audienceby immediately picking up the twocards.

AlexisNethercleft Copycat 1. This trick requires two packs, eachwith a different coloured back. Ask

a member of the audience to helpyou and give them one of the twopacks-you take the other one. Tell

the person to copy what you do2. Start by both shuffling the pack in

    your hands.

    3. Swap packs, but as you do so,take a peek at the bottom card ofthe pack you are handing over.Lets say it's the ace of spades forthis example.

    4. Choose a card from your pack andplace it on the top. Instruct yourhelper to do the same.

    5. Each of you cut the pack in yourhands. Your helper's chosen card

is now the one below the ace ofspades.

    6. Swap packs again and instructyour helper to remove their chosencard from the pack and place itface down on the table.

    3. Get someone to cut the pack intofour piles. Watch carefully to seewhere they put the pile with the theace of spades on.

    4. Touch any other pile, look at itintently, hesitate, and say "the topcard of this pile is the ace of

spades", before picking the topcard up.

    5. Look at the card you've just pickedup (let's call it the jack of hearts).

    6. Touch any pile other than the onewith the ace of spades in and say"jack of hearts" before picking upthe top card and looking at it.

    7. Repeat the procedure with theother two piles, leaving the onewith the ace of spades in until last.

    8. Throw the four cards down on thetable face up for all to see. You

Mirkin Card Counting 1. Get a full deck of cards, or to makeit slightly easier take out thepicture cards to begin with.

    2. Ask a spectator to take the packand look away. Ask them to take acard and hand you the remainingdeck. They can shuffle it if theywant to.

    3. Now say you will look through thedeck twice and then name the

missing card.4. As you go through the pack card

by card add up all the cardsmodula 10 (that is when you get to10 start again.) For example: Aceseven three five nine two youwould add up as 1+7=8 8+3=11modula 10 = 1 1+5=6 6+9=15modula 10 =5 5+9=14 modula10=4 4+2=7 and so on.

    5. Then begin to lift the half of thepack up while sliding the bottomcard up with it.

    6. Then show the audience the hole

    2. Cut the chosen deck into two pilesand ask the spectator which pilethey would like to use for thetrick. If the spectator chooses thebottom portion, you will need tokeep track of the bottom card (keycard) of that pile. If the spectatorchooses the top portion, you will

need to keep track of the top card(key card) of that pile.

    3. Tell the spectator to cut the pile hechose into two piles. You willeliminate the pile that doesn'tcontain the key card.

    4. Deal the remaining cards into fivepiles, keeping track of which pilethe key card is in and where it is inthat pile (top or bottom). Hold yourhands over two piles that don'tcontain the key card and ask thespectator which one he/she wouldlike to eliminate.

    5. After removing that pile, have thespectator place his/her hands overtwo piles. You remove a pilemaking sure it a pile that doesn'tcontain the key card.

    6. With three piles left, you hold yourhands over two of the piles thatdon't contain the key card and askthe spectator to eliminate one ofthem.

    7. Two piles are left and you get toremove the last pile that doesn'tcontain the key card.

    8. Deal out the remaining pile. Ifthere are an even number ofcards, you must pick (so have thespectator hold their hands overtwo piles). If there are an odd

number, the spectator mustchoose. With the one key cardleft, face down on the table, youpull out the deck not used for thetrick and quickly pull out the cardidentical to the one left by takingthe top card if he originally chosethe top portion, or pulling out thebottom card if they originally chosethe bottom portion.

    3. Tell the group something along thelines of: "I know this is going to beamazing, but please hold yourapplause. I'm going to reveal thechosen card, but it's important thatyou make no noise at all. Justmarvel in silence so that we can allenjoy the enormous impact."

    4. Perform a double liftshowing theselected card, and name it.

    6. Return the double card to the topof the deck and slide the top cardinto the middle of the deck.

    7. "Hold on, maybe I can worksomething out." Ask the volunteerto tell you the name of their card.

    8. They will tell you and the audiencewill be happy to inform you that

AlexisNethercleft Now it should work! 1. Ask a member of the audience tochoose a card and bring it to the

    top.

    2. Ask the volunteer to think of anynumber from 5 to 15, and havethem count off that many cards

from the top of the pack.3. Get them to turn over the top card,

and ask them if it is their chosencard-it won't be. Have the dealtcards placed back on top of thedeck.

    4. Ask the volunteer if they are surethey counted correctly. Tell themthat it is important to deal thecards slowly, or the magic won'twork.

    5. Deal off 1 less than the chosennumber of cards from the deck

slowly and carefully (ie. if thevolunteer chose 11, deal off 10).The chosen card is now on top ofthe remaining deck.

    6. Ask the volunteer what their cardwas and say: "Wouldn't it beamazing if I had your card righthere?"

    7. Double liftthe top two cards, showing the one below the chosencard. Look at the bottom andappear annoyed.

    8. Now, you have to blame the cardyou have revealed for ruining yourtrick. Imagine, for example, thecard was the nine of diamonds.Say something along the lines of"Wouldn't you just know it? Ishould of guessed. The nine ofdiamonds is always messingthings up, popping up when youdon't want it to.

    9. Replace the double card on top ofthe deck, and place the top card(the chosen one) to one side."There, that should get rid of that

nasty nine of diamonds!"10.Put the dealt cards back on top of

11.Once again, deal one less than thechosen number of cards (10 forthis example), off the top of thedeck. "Now it should work!"

    3. Ask a volunteer from theaudience to "Count a smallnumber of cards (let's saybetween 1 and 10) from thetop of the pack while I turnaway. Then hide them so I

    6. Inform the volunteer that youare going to bring out yourcards one by one and askthem to call out when youreach their number.

    7. Begin bringing out the cardsfrom the top of the pile andplace them face down on thetable. When the volunteerstops you, place that carddown next to your predictioncard.

Mike Verive Needle in a Haystack Effect:The performer takes a borrowed deck, and removes three cards. Threespectators are given free choice of any ofthe three cards. The first spectator isasked for a number, and that many cardsare dealt. Another spectator is asked for anumber, and that number of cards aredealt as well. The third spectator thenuses those numbers to deal more cards toa final card. When the first spectator turnshis card over, it matches the number ofthe selected card. The other spectators dothe same, and all cards match!

    Performance:

    1. Take a borrowed deck of cards, and run through them, looking forthree "prediction cards". Note the

top card, and remove the threeother cards of the same number.

    2. Place these cards face down nextto each other on the table. Eachof three spectators chooses acard, looks at it without anyoneelse seeing, and replaces it ontothe table.

    3. The first spectator picks a numberfrom 1 to 10. That many cards aredealt face down, one at a time, from the top of the deck, then putback on the top (reversing their

    original positions).

    4. The second spectator is asked fora number from 11 to 20, and thatmany cards are dealt, one at atime, face down as before, thenreturned to the top of the deck.

    5. The third spectator is asked forthe difference between the firstand second spectator's numbers,

then deals that many cards. Thenext card is the "selected card",which was the original top card.

    6. Each spectator is asked if hethinks his card is the one thatmatches, and when all four cards

    are shown, it's a surprise!

Jeff Stickney Roll Over Preparation:Put a double-faces card (bought frommost magic shops, or two cards gluedback to back) on the bottom of the deck.

    Performance:

    1. Fan the deck out and have aspectator select a card. Ask the

spectator to show the card to therest of the audience, but not toyou.

    2. While everyone is watching thespectator, turn the deck over. Askspectator to put the card back intothe deck.

    3. Pick up the deck hold it on its sidefor a second with your handscovering both sides. Turn thedeck back around and shuffle it,shuffling the double-card into thedeck(off the bottom).

    4. Tell the spectator(s) somethinglike "not only do I know sometricks, but I have taught sometricks to these cards. Tell thespectator to tap the deck and tosay "roll over".

the deck into two. Rememberwhich half has the aces at the top,and which half has them at thebottom.

    2. Pick up the packet with the aceson top and do a false shuffle,

keeping them at the top.3. Pick up the other half, with the

aces on the bottom, and shufflethe two aces on the bottom to thetop.

    4. Position the two halves of thedeck (A and B) corner to corneras shown:

    A D

    C B

    5. Cut the top half of pile A to formpile C, and cut the top half of pileB to form pile D. Piles C and Dnow have two aces at the top.

    6. Position your left hand at thebottom of pile C and your righthand at the top of pile D. Quicklylift the two cards on the top ofthese piles and place them faceup on top of piles A and B.

    7. Turn over the new top cards onpiles C and D. There are now four

face up aces on the four piles!

I was a bit dubious about the effect of thistrick the first time I did it, but it turned outto be astonishing!

Mathboy Ordered suit force Effect:The magician finds the spectator's card bycounting off cards from the deck.

    Preparation:

    1. This trick needs to be set up first.Order the cards of any suit fromAce to 10, with the Ace on topand the 10 on the bottom. I do itwith hearts, but, obviously, anysuit will work.

    2. Place this stack of ten cards atthe bottom of the deck. Now you

    are ready.

    Performance:

    1. Have the spectator choose anycard. Should he choose any of

the bottom ten cards, the tricklaughably easy--if that happens, choose any way you like ofshowing him the card. If hechooses any other card, however, tell him to put the card on top ofthe deck.

    2. Hand the deck to him and tell himto cut it face down. [Make surethat he cuts it and does notshuffle it.]

    3. Tell him to flip the deck over andcut it face up. He should continue

to cut it until you see a non-faceheart (or whatever the orderedsuit was) on the bottom of thedeck (for example the five ofhearts). Take the deck.

    4. Now, count off the number ofcards from the top of the deck asspecified by the card revealed onthe bottom (for example five) andthat card will be his.

Dplacement de carte 1. Fan the deck out with the cards

    and to look at it.

    3. As he's looking at his card, youclose up the fan and cut the deckin two, holding the lower part inyour left hand, and the upper inthe right one.

    4. Ask the spectator to put his cardon the lower part, in your lefthand.

    5. As the right hand comes to dropthe upper part over the other one

in the left hand, secure a small, invisible break between the twoparts of the deck, above thechosen card.

    6. Now, you ask the spectator forthe name of a different card (notthe one he took). Let's call thiscard 2. As you do that, make amove to bring the chosen card to

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    38/52

the top of the deck. This can bedone in two ways:

    1. You can simulatethat you arerandomly cutting

the deck. Cut itinto 3 parts, thefirst one being thepart of the deckbelow the chosencard (card 1), andthe other twobeing theremainder of thedeck. Now youcan arrange thethree parts, inorder to have the

chosen card atthe top. If doneproperly, it's veryefficient.

    2. Harder, but moreimpressive: Youcan do what iscalled in french"un Saut deCoupe". It is aninvisible movewhere you makethe bottom partgo over the otherone. It's quitehard to do, butmany tricks arebased on it. Anexplanation of a"Saut de coupe"called the "sautde coupeCharlier" can befound in the skillspage. It should bedone with yourleft hand, hiding it

    with the right one.

    7. Now, you've got the chosen cardat the top of the deck, facestoward the ground.

    8. Turn the deck faces upward, andscroll the cards one after theother until you see the card 2 (theone they name

    d).

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    39/52

    9. While you're doing that, slide yourlower card (the taken one) underthe cards that you've alreadyscrolled. When you see the card2, remove the cards that seem tobe under the card 2 ( but that are

in fact between the card 2 and thetaken one), putting them to oneside. Make a deck with theremaining cards. The last card isthe chosen one, just after the cardtwo. So now you can do a doublelift, taking these two cards as ifthere was only one, the card 2.With a great smile, you make thechosen one appear!

    Branko daWiz Speedy Sandwich Effect:

The selected card magically becomessandwiched between two jokers.

    Performance:

    1. Extract the two jokers from thedeck and let a spectator select acard. Bring it secretly to thebottom of the deck in your favoritemanner. (One or two useful trickoverhand shuffles can be found inthe skills page).

    2. Explain that you will make thejokers trap the chosen card right

between them, and openly putone joker to the top and the otherto the bottom of the deck, bothface up.

    3. Openly left-jog the bottom joker, saying the gag that her card ISreally between the jokers.

    4. Wait for response at the gag, thenhold the deck with the right handat the right side with the thumb ontop and the fingers at the bottom.

The middle finger should be incontact with the bottom joker, andthe index finger should be incontact with selection, thanks tothe left-jogged joker.

    5. Now if you throw the deck into theleft hand, thanks to the frictionbetween your fingers and thecards, only the two face up jokersand the selection between them

will remain in the right hand!!

Webmaster's comment:The frictionbetween the cards and the fingers can beimproved by moistening your fingers. Thisimproves the reliability of the trick.

John Scissor Fingers 1. Ask someone to pick a card, andshuffle it to second from bottom.

    2. Next, take the bottom card andask if its their card they will sayno.

    3. Put the card you showed back onthe bottom and take their cardand out it face down.

    4. Put the chosen card on top of thedeck.

    5. Show 3 more cards and put eachface down on top of theirs.

    6. Tell them to put their fingers outlike scissors and then put thecards between thier fingers. Tapthe 4 cards until the bottom card'sthe only one that hasn't fallen outof thier hands. They look at it andsee their card.

TheMagicman The Unknown Card 1. Let someone from the audiencehold the pack.

    2. Tell them to pick a card whichthey must remember and put it onthe top of the pack (face down)

    3. Tell them to pick the samenumber of cards from the bottomof the pack, according to thenumber on the card they chose, and lay them on the top of thepack. (If they chose a 2 of Clubsfor example, they should pick 2cards from the bottom and laythem on the top).

    4. Now, you tell them to start fromthe top of the pack and take outcards one by one. They shouldsay for each one its number and

suit and put it at the bottom of thepack. Of course, while he/she isdoing all this, you cant watch.

    5. Here is what you got to do! Whenthey start to pick cards from thetop of the pack, you have to startcounting (for yourself). The firstcard he/she tells you, you dontcount, but when he/she picks the

  • 7/29/2019 card trick for beginners

    41/52

    second card, you count 1.

    6. When he/she picks the third card, you count 2. and so on.

    7. Heres the trick. When thenumber of the card he/she teyou, maches with the number you

are counting, theres a big chancethat the card he/she just told youis the one he/she chose ibeginning. So pay great attentionand listen carefully which cardshe/she is picking. There might besome other cards matching toyour counting, so let them read atleast 15. cards. If youre lucky, theres just one matching. But ifthere are two which match, itsquite impressing anyway. Justmention them both.

    3. Tell the spectator that you havethree jokers, one blue backed andtwo red backed, and show them, making sure they don't see both

Hold the pack in your dominant hand, so that you can show the bottom faceto your audience. Your thumb should be on one long side of the pack, and afour fingers on the other side. The pack should be vertical, with the bottomcard facing away from you, and the back of your pack facing your palm.

Turn the pack so it's face down. As you do this, draw the bottobackwards (towards you - away from the audience) about half an inch usyour 3rd and 4th fingers. This should be invisible to the audience, as it iscovered by your hand.
