The S. S. Rizzo (named for the Cubs baseball player) founders half way through the 200 yard course.

By Anne Eickstadt,CORRESPONDENT

Those daring adventurers are putting their imaginations to work again. They think that cardboard floats on water while carrying peo-ple. Sometimes it does. Corpora-tions, organizations, families and in-dividuals all take the time and make the effort to do something wild and wacky and incredibly fun.

Kevin Howard and Brian Barrett have been participating in the Card-board Cup Regatta for three years. “The first year, I made a Viking boat,” Howard tells me. “We got it to the starting line and it went phhht [his hand gestures downward]. We pushed it to the finish. The second year, I made unsinkable boats. They weren’t fast, but they didn’t sink.” This year Howard and friends have three boats entered in the regatta. They work at the same company but are entering as individuals.

The Sage YMCA is participat-ing this year as an organization. This boat is being manned by Jor-dan Guentter, Camp Counselor; Joe Hanna, Aquatics Director; and Mr. Brad, Aquatics Coordinator. “Ev-

erybody helped build it,” they say. “The Maintenance staff designed it, the kids colored the whole inside of the boat. The rest was built by the aquatics staff and lifeguards. The Front Desk made the support beams, the lifeguards tested it - they sat in it, and the camp colored it.”

“We’re going for ‘Best Sink’,” Brad says. “I can hear the kids now – ‘Mr. Brad goes down in the first heat’.” They named their boat ‘It’s Fun to Sink at the YMCA’.”

Another team is also going for ‘Best Sink’. “It’s good to know who the competition is,” says Heather Killian, designer and Captain of the boat ‘Fish Heads’. “Haven’t you ever seen a fish on a bicycle before? I’ve been doing this since my kids were 4 and 7. Now, they are 20 and 23. People think I’m crazy. I like ‘in-sanely creative artist’.”

Joe from the Morning Show at STAR 105.5 FM is DJ and announc-er for the regatta again. He is joined by Paul from The Cottage at 6 East Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake, IL, www.thecottagepub.net.

Over 40 boats are entered into the Cardboard Cup Regatta this year. Categories range from the 5 to 10 year old’ Kiddie Cup’ to the 50 and older ‘Geezer Cup’; Kwiki Boats which are built from a kit on the day of the race; peddle/mechanically powered; sail; and, the most popular, paddle powered.

Boat styles range from canoe-like to rafts to a ‘Mini Titanic’. They can resemble a six-pack of beer, a square wrestling ring or a fish on a bicycle raft. Imagination is the only limit.

One team labelled their boat

the ‘Cam PAIN’ and wore Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton masks. [They sank at the starting line.]

The Cardboard Cup Regatta origi-nated in 1985 in Crystal Lake and has been a popular event ever since. They are a non-profit organiza-tion which supports local nonprofit groups.

They will be giving grants to twenty charities this year.

Further information on the Card-board Cup Regatta can be found on their website at www.cardboardcup.com and on their Facebook page.

Kristen Anderson, Carolyn Rausch and Audrey Godsell of Team Fruit Salad help Ethan Wagner, age 7, and Emma Wagner, age 9, direct the robots at the Crystal Lake Public Library while mom watches.

By Anne Eickstadt,CORRESPONDENT

“Someone left their cell phone on that robot.”

“It’s the robot’s phone.”All righty then. When I was grow-

ing up, I built things with Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys. Phones were rotary dial. A bulky car phone was a new innovation and somewhat pre-tentious because it was very expen-sive. Movie scenes and comedy skits were built around telephone opera-tors and spaghetti boards. The only robot I could name was “Gort” (The Day the Earth Stood Still) [I watched the classic movies on TV].

Today, I am looking at a robot built by high schoolers and the robots have their own cell phones. Why?

Team Fruit Salad 8817 are at the Crystal lake Public Library, Friday, June 17, demonstrating this year’s ‘Trash Tech’ FIRST Challenge. These robots are designed to clean up ‘debris’ scattered across a twelve foot square playing field, move it up ramps and into collection bins. “They are using new technology this year,” Coach Greg Godsell tells me. “They needed to develop an android app for the robots.”

FIRST: For Inspiration and Rec-ognition of Science and Technology “is a robotics program designed to inspire young people to become sci-ence and technology leaders.” The program stresses STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills for leagues from Kindergarten through high school. “FIRST was founded by Dean Kamen, the re-nowned inventor of the Segway and other innovations.”

Team Fruit Salad [grades 9-12] are pitting their engineering skills in this year’s challenge against other North-ern Illinois teams on the local level. They hope to reach the regional level

and from there on up to the interna-tional competitions.

They are joined by the local FIRST LEGO League team (4-8 grades), Brick 6, in today’s demonstration. Brick 6 has developed ‘Recycling 2.0’, a neighborhood program for re-cycling items that are not picked up curbside. They have presented their program to the city council, “They thought it was a good idea.” Brick 6 is demonstrating their own LEGO Mindstorms robot which is complet-ing missions on a 4’x8’ table.

Greg Godsell is coaching these FIRST robotics teams. He is also a member of the planning committee for FIRST Tech Challenge. “There are grants and rookie teams can be funded,” he says.

That brings the costs for beginning FIRST teams down to nearly nothing.

“Crystal Lake Robotics was cre-ated to further interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) within our community: McHenry County, Illinois. By devel-oping STEM interests in our youth, we create opportunities for individu-als and for organizations seeking to employ young, talented individuals with ties to the community,” says the home website for these teams. “How do you encourage students to develop their interests in STEM fields? Chal-lenge them to a competition. Students design, build, and program robots to solve problems in a game challenge. Along the way they pick up business, public speaking, teamwork, and lead-ership skills.”

Any organization, school or indi-vidual who is interested in develop-ing a FIRST program in their own community can visit www.firstin-spires.org.

You can also visit Facebook to find the Fruit Salad Robotics Team latest news.
