Term 1, Week 4 Tuesday 18th February 2014

Principal’s Message
The year seems to have started in the blink of an eye and here we are already at the start of Week 4. Classes are
now into routine and getting on with business. We’ve had a terrific response from parents who have volunteered
their time to assist the teachers in their child’s classrooms this year. The voluntary role you play can make such a
difference to the students’ learning and we appreciate it very much. It’s not too late; if you have been thinking
about whether you could commit to half an hour once or twice a week in your child’s class please speak to the
teacher. They would be only too happy to talk you through what’s involved.
For my part, the swimming carnival last Wednesday was very enjoyable. The students’ behaviour was, as we’d
expect, of a high standard and as the day wore on, their participation in events increased as well. Congratulations
to our new House Captains on successfully managing their first ‘assignment’. The spirit they developed in their
houses was excellent. Several teachers remarked to me that they felt that there was a noticeable improvement in
the swimming ability of the younger students who participated in the K-2 swimming program in Term 4 last year.
It’s good to know the investment was a good one and that students’ confidence in the water is clearly growing.
Swimming certificates will be presented at next Thursday’s assembly (27th Feb)
Hope to see you at P&C tomorrow. Enjoy your week.

Swimming Carnival
Last Wednesday we had our annual swimming carnival. The house cheers were first, everyone in every house
cheered as loud as they could even though Arunta forgot how to spell their house name! Tommy had better do his
spelling homework! Although it was a tough competition, Arunta came first with Myall. Then we were off and
running (well, swimming). The first event was the 12-13 year old freestyle heats. Under 11’s were next then it kept
going down to 8 year olds. When we finished the heats we went straight on to the finals. It was very funny when
Mr McCready had to jump into the pool to stop one of the finals…great swimming Mr McCready! At lunch time we
were able to have a nice picnic with our families and friends. The pool canteen was also a hit. The novelty events
were near the end of the day. We enjoyed board races, noodle races and diving for the rings. Everyone had a
fabulous day and participated in a lot of races. Thank you for a great day teachers, families and students.

Term Invoices
The Term 1 invoices are now complete and you should receive them today with this newsletter. The main
expense this term is the student’s book pack. All students have received their book pack and are using it now. It
contains many of the books, pencils and other resources which they will need throughout the year. From past
experience, some families like to pay their term invoice often in full as soon as they receive it, others like to pay a
little bit off at a time. The choice is yours; however please remember if you need to discuss your family’s needs of
either more time or support please make an appointment to discuss your options with Mr Holland.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher interviews have been scheduled in Week 6 on Tues 4th
March between 3:00pm – 6:30pm.
Notes will come home shortly for you to indicate your preferred interview times, but as part of the process you will
have the opportunity to identify your child’s strengths, areas of development, any goals you have for them and
any specific things you would like to discuss with your child’s teacher. Interviews will also take the place of our
Parent Information Night as you will be able to discuss/clarify the organisation and routines of your child’s class
one on one with the teacher.
P&C Meeting
The first P&C meeting for 2014 is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7pm in the school library. The school P&C is
great way to be involved in your child’s education and to meet other parents. It is open to all families in our
school. So whether your family has been with us for a while, or you are new this year, can I offer an invitation to
you to come along and hear about the great work our P&C does. You don’t need to commit to taking on a
particular job, but we’d love to have your support if you are free for about an hour tomorrow night – and why not
bring a friend!
Scripture - SRE
Part of the Department of Education’s practice is the provision of Special Religious Education in schools by an
approved provider. The school has been approached by such an organisation and they have enough teachers to
provide religious education to all classes except 5C and 6G on Wednesdays. Each lesson goes for half an hour,
is non-denominational, based on Christian faith and presented by approved persons (the classroom teacher will
be present in the room during the lesson). Children will work from an approved text. As parents you have the right
to withdraw your child for these lessons. The Department is clear however, in that, other curriculum areas are not
to be taught while SRE is being conducted for the nominated group. This means that if your child does not attend
SRE with their class, they will be asked to complete any unfinished work, or read etc. for the period of the lesson.
If you do not want them to participate in SRE, please address a letter to Mr Holland requesting an exemption. It
will be assumed that if we receive no correspondence that you are happy for your child/ren to participate in these
weekly ½hr lessons.
Kindergarten Hours
Starting next Monday, Kindergarten students will be at school for a full day, finishing at 3pm with the rest of the
