Volume II

FROM TIiE DIRECTOR EXOTING DEVELOPMENTS IN TIiE LIBRARY

The Cardinal Cushing Library has entered a very exciting eraautomation of the card catalog, updating and enhancing the print collections and offering expanded access to remote resources. We continue to seek new ways to engage the College community in the current and future developments of the library. This edition of the newsletter is published to inform you about services, recent acquisitions, special projects, and available programs. My office is open for informal discussion on Tuesdays from 10-11 AM or by appointment. We look forward to the challenges of the future and encourage you to share your comments and suggestions with us.

Albie Johnson Director

Many changes are taking place in the Cardinal Cushing Library. Most notable is our acceptance for membership in Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) and the automation of the card catalog.

As a member of FLO, students, faculty, alumnae and staff will be able to access the resources (over 500,000 bibliographic records) of our library as well as Emerson College, Lesley College, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Phannacy and Allied Health Sciences, Museum of Fine Arts, New England Conservatory of Music, Wentworth Institute of Technology and Wheelock College.

Automation of the card catalog will be done in three phases. Phase I is well underway and includes creating a computer database of all of the library'S books and other materials. The process for creating the database is called retrospective conversion. It involves taking the written records of the library collection-the card catalog entriesand creating machine-readable entries for them.

Phase II of the project will include building an online public access catalog (OPAC). The existing card catalog will be replaced with the machine-readable records and our database will be merged with FLO. This phase will involve installing computer terminals, electrical outlets and cable access to the central computer, and telecommunication equipment. Phase II will also include barcoding, which is the linkage between the computer system and the book or journal, and relabeling the entire collection.

Phase III of the project involves performing local testing of the system modules, and includes refining the system functions at the local site. This phase is scheduled to last several months.

The target date to have the system totally operational and accessible to the College community is the winter of 1996.
