➢ Modification done in Preheating furnace to
accommodate 43 No's of slabs per day which
results 43 slabs rolling per day instead of 40 slabs .
➢ Study of furnace heating process to accommodate
additional 3 slabs and its impact on furnace operation
& soaking time
➢ Shoe modified to reduce space in between the slabs.
➢ Charging Pusher Hydraulic system pressure
increment and synchronization
Pre-Heating Furnace
Hot Rolling Mill
Vedanta Limited, Aluminium - BALCO | 11
Analysis
➢ From detail analysis of design parameters/ dimension of Preheating furnace and it’s mounting parts, it was found
that we can increase the slab charging capacity of Furnace by reducing the length of slab carrying shoe in which
Aluminum Slab rest and travel inside the Furnace.
Analysis
Vedanta Limited, Aluminium - BALCO | 12
In-house modification and with our own resources.
➢ Inside length of preheating furnace-
18220mm,
➢ Length of slab carrying shoe- 450mm,
➢ Length of 40 pairs of slab carrying shoe-
450*40= 18000 mm,
➢ Now a extended steel plate of 32 mm, mounted
on slab carrying shoe, If it will be removed
then length of slab carrying shoe- 418 mm,
➢ Now the maximum Pair of modified shoe can
be accommodate inside furnace will be –
18220/418= 43 nos.
➢ By this calculation we found that we can
increase slab charging capacity of Preheating
furnace from 40 nos to 43 nos.

Enrich Silo De-dusting Unit pipeline modification –
use of suction for created by ID-fan
➢ Electrolysis in pots produces Hydrogen Fluoride, which
is environmentally hazardous.
➢ In FTP, Hydrogen Fluoride is reacted with fresh Alumina
to obtain Enriched Alumina.
➢ Enriched Alumina deposited on filter bags is periodically
pulsed and collected at hopper bottom.
Project Title:
Innovation-Project 2
Project Details
Vedanta Limited, Aluminium - BALCO | 15
➢Used to clean dust laden air created while loading of silo
➢The air enters the collector under pressure or suction from a fan or blower
➢The air travels through the filters and exits the collector cleans the bags.
➢The jet of compressed air blows the dust off the filter.
➢The dust then falls with gravity to the bottom of the collector.
➢A dust collector pulses the filter with a jet of compressed air to clean the
filter.
➢A voltage signal that trips a pulse valve that opens to let the compressed air
into the filter.

➢ Suction created by ID fans can be utilized for de-dusting.
➢ De-dusting airline can be connected to ID fan duct.
➢ A pipeline was fabricated.
➢ Main de-dusting pipeline was tapped atEnrich silo top, while fume duct was tappedat ground level.
➢ They were than connected by theaforementioned 10” pipe.
➢ A sliding damper was given to close ID Fansuction when DDU is working.

➢ Suction through ID Fan can assist de-dusting during
normal course of operation.
➢ This reduces load on DDU motor, prolonging its life
and also saving energy
Current drawn by motor:
Before modification = 36 A
After modification = 25 A Difference ΔI = 10 A
Power saved = (√3 x V x ΔI x cosØ x T)/1000 kW-H
where, V=415 volt,cosØ= Power Factor = 0.85
Time of running per month (in hours) = 24x30 = 720 hour
Power-saved=(1.732x415x10x0.85x720)/1000=4398.93 KWH
Monetary saving = ₹ 3x 4398.93 = ₹ 13,196.8 per month
Tangible Benefits➢ Saving of ₹ 13,196.8 per month in
power consumption.
➢ Uninterrupted availability of suction
mechanism, even when DDU is down.
