IBM Canada Surpasses ECF Goal

To provide an avenue for IBM Employees and IBMers give where they live throughout the year.

We did it! IBMers from across Canada pulled together to surpass our Employees’ Charitable Fund (ECF) target and raise$3.3 million for Canadian charities.

In addition to the money raised by individual pledges, IBMers raised thousands of dollars as they put the fun in fundraising.Special thanks to the location and function coordinators who volunteered countless hours and planned so many creativeand exciting events at their respective locations. You could literally come up with an A to Z list of highlights from excitingfundraisers held across the country, including: auctions, bake sales, candy grams, donation jars, executive pie-in-the-facedelivery, food drives, golf tournaments, halloween parades, ice cream sales, jelly bean counting, keepsakes from garagesales, lunch-hour movies, minute to win it, name that tune… (you get the picture.)

To close off another successful ECF campaign more than 700 employees and their families from the Greater Toronto Areaconverged at a Silver City theatre where they enjoyed an early morning movie, had popcorn for breakfast, and celebrated the results results of the campaign.

The headline says it all. We surpassed our goal. And it happened because ofyour hard work. Success wasn’t only measured in dollars raised but also fun, employee engagement and volunteerism.

Without your involvement and commitment, our ECF campaign would not be one of the largest, most successful, national employee campaigns in Canada. Your engagement, in every location and function, ensures our campaign reaches the entire IBM Canada team coast to coast.

Thank you for everything you have done throughout our campaign.

Meet Dave WellingGB Territory Services Leader, is one ofIBM’s “ECF Heroes” and volunteers with Boys To Men Canada, a relatively new organization modeled after the best practices of organizations such as Boy Scouts and Big Brothers. Boys To Men provides 13-18 year old boys, who are struggling with adolescence, the opportunity to attend a “rite of passage” adventure weekend to learn positive qualities such as integrity, courage and respect from male adult mentors. From that point, the boys become “journeymen” for 2-3 years under the leadership of group mentors such as Dave while they enter into manhood.

Dave has been involved with the Toronto Chapter since it opened in April, 2010 and is passionate and committed to the program. He is also a member of their Board and attributes much of his success to the resource tools he uses on On Demand Community ODC. Boys To Men is a registered Canadian charity and recipient of IBM’s Employee Charitable Fund (ECF) program.

Parents of IBMer Thankful for Haiti Relief EffortsRobert Nonez was one of four children born and raised in Haiti who emigrated to Canada to study Engineering at University of Ottawa. Today, Robert works as a Cognos software developer for IBM Canada in Ottawa. Recently, Robert spoke to IBM Corporate Citizenship and described the ordeal his parents endured with the Haiti earthquakes last January. “My parents were extremely lucky. They lived in Canape-Vert, just outside of Port-Au-Prince. Their home was one of three that was left standing after the earthquakes although they lived in a tent for weeks afterwards fearful of entering their home,” said Robert. “I lost an Uncle and my wife lost a cousin.

I don’t know of anyone in Haiti who did not lose relatives or loved ones.” Robert added that Haitians are very proud people and have a hard time asking for help even in the worst circumstances. “When I ask my extended family what they need they say nothing, we have everything we need, but in fact, this translates into we need everything and we don’t know where to start.”

The massive worldwide Relief Efforts gave much needed support for the people of Haiti. “The relief efforts gave people hope and made Haitians feel part of the world community. With no functioning government and widespread chaos, people would not have survived without the worldwide assistance.”

Through IBM Canada’s Employees’ Charitable Fund (ECF), employees contributed $70,000 to World Vision Canada which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government of Canada..
