AGMs can be enjoyable This is the newsletter before our AGM which will be held in Cambridge City for the first time on 9 October at 2pm. We trust it will be an occasion for celebration, for meeting others, enjoying tea together, learning something new and having fun! Care Network has its roots in rural community development, but to celebrate our increasing in work in Cambridge we have chosen a city venue. St John’s Innovation Centre is easily accessible from the A14, and has parking for our rural car-driving members. While the date and the venue are set, other elements are still fluid and could include a demonstration of how technology can help with taking medication and an input on our reminiscence work. If you have ideas of something you would like to hear about, or tell us about, please get in touch. 95% Satisfied and 50% Say Navigators Made Life Easier! Care Network’s internal records show that 95% of people navigated were satisfied with the service — but does this mean it changed their lives? Cambridgeshire County Council has carried out an evaluation of the difference the Care Network Community Navigator Service has made to those who used it. Phone interviews by an independent researcher with 40 clients gave lots of positive feedback and some food for thought. 73% of people who were navigated said they would use the service again and 50% said their life was easier since the navigation. Those most satisfied were people whose Navigation had resulted in help with something practical. E.g. someone who was navigated to a community transport service which they are now using, and someone who was navigated to a reputable painter. Even clients who had just been given information tended to report general improvements. Most of the clients are elderly and could not always remember the navigation and some have many services in their lives, but the findings could well indicate that the navigation contributed to their feeling of greater well-being. 58% said they felt more supported and 40% felt more positive about life as a result of their navigation. A surprising finding was that 48% of people felt more positive about where they live following the Navigation. We could speculate that knowing that services and activities are available contributed to this feeling. Those most difficult to help were people approaching Navigators with issues of loneliness and social isolation. These people may have decades of living without many friends and activities and so it is a tall order to expect a brief Navigator intervention to turn this situation round. Nevertheless, 18% said they were spending more time with other people since the Navigation, and 10% said they were taking part in new activities. A pretty positive result all round! Community Development

News from Fenland Just Sing! Two singing groups aimed particularly at people with dementia and other challenging conditions started back in March. The one in Wisbech meets at Edina Court, a Methodist Homes’ sheltered housing scheme, and is going fantastically well. It has attracted a good mix of residents and people from outside, together with volunteers, carers and friends. The sessions are great fun and everyone joins in. Lillian, who leads the singing and plays the piano, is delighted with what we have achieved in such a short time and is already talking of our first concert for family and friends. We are grateful to the Dosoco Foundation and Wisbech Rotary Club for the funding to make it all happen.

The group in March started enthusiastically and is led by members of March & District Amateur Operatic Society. Unfortunately it has had to find an alternative venue and so has not been meeting for a while. Once it is re-established there will be a re-launch and a new publicity drive.

For more information about either group, please contact me at Care Network on 01945 589953.

News from South Cambs Richard Waller, sixth form teacher at

Comberton Village College, brought

some of his students to help tidy

Beryl’s garden, which had become a

little overgrown. They did a fantastic

job on the hottest day of the year, Beryl

was delighted with the result and a

good time was had by all.

The next inter-generational event will be a 50s themed coffee morning hosted by the staff and students at Cottenham Village College. The senior members of the village will be their invited guests.

Cottenham is also planning to set up a “singing for fun” group. This will start on the 2nd of October and is being led by a well respected local musical director. If you want more information about this group, please contact me on 01954 211919.

Histon and Impington Community Car Scheme is about to start up early September, with Bourn Community Car Scheme getting going shortly afterwards. Both schemes have received donations from their respective Parish Councils to supplement the funding from Cambridgeshire District Council.

The exhibition will be displayed at the following venues for free, so we look forward to seeing some of you there.

The exhibition will also be at an Intergenerational Event is planned for 1st October in partnership with St. Neots Town Football Club from 1 p.m.-3p.m as part of Cambridgeshire Celebrates Age. The event to be held at the Rowley Park Stadium, Kester Way, St. Neots, PE19 6SN will provide an opportunity for older and younger generations to share an afternoon of fun and games including afternoon tea and an exhibition of the Great War. ‘Spotlight on a community’

Susan Bates is working on an evaluation project to find out why groups are so important for their communities.

Here she talks about her trip to the Alconbury Thursday Club.

What a lovely group! They meet every Thursday at Alconbury Sports Club. When I first arrived and walked through the door I was immediately hit by the laughter and the buzz in the room. Everyone was very chatty and gave me lots of interesting answers to the questions that I asked. One of the questions that I ask groups is: “what is the importance to you for being part of this group or scheme?” A few of the comments that I received were: ‘I have something to look forward to’, ‘keeps me independent and I am not so isolated’, and ‘Good atmosphere, good food and you have a laugh’. The Alconbury group is very friendly and makes everyone feel very relaxed and welcome. I am looking forward to returning in September to talk to more people.

Please let us know if you would like

your community group or scheme to

Community Development DBS updates Our car schemes recently received an email from the County Council to let them know that DBS checks will now be done electronically. This should mean that checks go through more quickly and with less administrative work than before. As always, Community Development are here to help in any way, please get in touch with your local officer if you need any assistance with this new system. Updated sheets for your fact packs will be available and circulated to coordinators very soon,

Family Carers Bursary Scheme Community Development are pleased to be supporting the County Council’s Carer Support Team with their Bursary Scheme. The Council have set up a bursary scheme to encourage local Carers to establish social groups to enable them to get together, relax and offer mutual support.

Carers are encouraged to apply for the one-off bursary of up to £250 to help them with the start up costs of setting up and establishing a group. For further details, for help to set up a group or apply for the bursary, please contact Lynne McAulay.

SCAN project update The South Cambridgeshire Advice Network is increasing the ways that people in South Cambridgeshire can access advice services. We are working closely with our partners, including CAB and the library service and in various communities across South Cambridgeshire. There are new on-line advice drop-ins in Histon and Great Shelford libraries. The kiosks in Cambourne Church, Gamlingay Eco-hub and Melbourn Hub are all well used and getting good feedback. Community Navigators have also received bespoke CAB training. Please get in touch with any questions you may have or if you are interested in getting involved. Community Navigators

New Coordinator and drop-in sessions in Fenland Summer for the Community Navigators project has been as exciting as the sunny weather we’ve been experiencing. We have enjoyed attending local summer events and directing people how best to get out and about on the warm days. We are delighted to have welcomed a new district coordinator to our team and established a new regular drop in session in Manea at the Internet Club, Church Rooms every Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Welcome to Kathy Cornell, our new Fenland District Community Navigator Coordinator. Kathy has long standing experience in social care in the Fenland, an area she loves and knows extremely well. She has worked for Cambridgeshire & Norfolk County Councils covering all aspects of care management and has had a varied career specialising in complex casework mainly with vulnerable adults. She will be a valuable asset to our team.

Trustees are very valuable This year we have said goodbye to three trustees and hello to three new ones. Many thanks to all our retiring trustees, but particularly Jan Lovegrove and Carolyn Douthwaite. Although no longer a trustee, Carolyn raised £1000 for Care Network by cycling 70 Km at the Woburn Cycletta event in June. Well done Carolyn!

Jan served on the board for nearly 10 years and is continuing as a Help at Home volunteer but has retired as a trustee. We now lack an active volunteer on our trustee board - if you might be interested in this role, please let us know. We look forward to officially welcoming three new trustees who have joined during the year at the AGM – Steve McGrady, Sue Ellington and Ewan Kelsall. More details about them in a future newsletter.

Direct Services Help at Home An exciting and busy few months where Help at Home referrals reached a peak of 196 referrals in the month of June. This is exceptional and our volunteers are working really hard. The difficulty with running such a busy service is that referrals can come in areas that volunteers haven’t offered to cover. A huge thank you to all our volunteers for what they do and for those who literally go the extra mile to reach clients who may not fall directly in their area. Thankfully we have been successful in recruiting new volunteers and have a good number going

through the volunteering process. If you have applied and are waiting to begin please bear with us

as we are finding delays in the holiday period waiting for references and DBS checks being

returned.

Cambridgeshire Community Service NHS Trust Staff Excellence Awards

Some really exciting news is that following our nomination for the above award, we received a letter telling us that we are either winners or runners up in the category of Volunteer or Charity of the Year. The Hunts and Fens team who were nominated by Community Matron, Jackie Walker were filmed for the awards ceremony in September. In her nomination Jackie said ‘ I would not hesitate to recommend Care Network as a volunteer organisation who work in a professional and coordinated manner to optimise the holistic care provided to the patient’. The team were nominated for a case where our volunteer Graham visited over 3 weeks to help

someone over a crisis. After the service was completed we called back the client’s Next of Kin who

said: ‘He (Graham) was lovely; he was very good. …I think Graham is amazing. Nothing was too

much and I know my Dad liked having him around. And he (Graham) would let me know if there

were any problems. Normally I would call the GP. My brother does help; he knows the ropes sort

of thing, as he’s medical so he knows who to call – so he writes to the GP. I would have Graham

back anytime. Graham was brilliant’

Filming Last week the team were

visited by Kirstie a member

of the Cambridgeshire

Community Service

communications team who

has made a short film of

Jackie and the service.

Here is a picture taken on

the day of filming. It shows

Coordinator Cathy Wells

and volunteer

Graham Austin.

Comments from Hunts and Fens staff Hunts and Fens staff, the volunteer and Hilary will be attending the presentation on the 29th September. Graham the volunteer also came to the office for the morning for his part in the short film that would be made and all of us including Hilary got up an hour early to put our faces on. This is great news for us and wonderful publicity and just making it all worthwhile. Above is the photo of our morning of fame, if autographs are required please drop us a line.
