ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS INTO AUT BACHELOR’S DEGREESStudents who have just missed University Entrance or did not get into their chosen degree could consider enrolling in one of the programmes below.
| 49
Students whose first language is not English, Māori or NZ Sign Language need to prove they have the minimum level of English required to enrol in their chosen AUT qualification.
International students studying at secondary schools and applying for UE through NCEA, CIE or IB must apply using the English requirements of that qualification.
IELTS (academic) results may also be required for AUT degrees with professional bodies that use IELTS (academic) as their literacy measure, eg the Bachelor of Health Science (Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Oral Health, Paramedicine, Physiotherapy, Podiatry). For more details, refer to aut.ac.nz/englishrequirements
International students who do not meet the English language requirements for entry into an AUT programme, can study English at AUT. AUT International House offers a range of qualifications, including GIE, the AUT academic pathway and preparation programme which prepares students for undergraduate and postgraduate study, as well as IELTS academic preparation courses.
In addition, AUT's School of Language and Culture offers the Certificate in English for Academic Study and the Diploma in English Language which also prepare students for degree study. For more info, visit aut.ac.nz/international
International students who have not met the general academic qualifications for direct entry into AUT programmes can enrol in a foundation programme like AUT’s foundation programmes (refer to page 48), the AUT Certificate in Foundation Studies from UP International College NZ or the Auckland Foundation Year (AFY) at Taylors College. For more information about these contact the International Centre at aut.ac.nz/enquire or +64 9 921 9099.

AUT programmes with rank scores
Some AUT programmes use a rank score as part of their entry requirement process.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
Guaranteed entry: Applicants will automatically be offered a place in this programme if they have a rank score of 250 or higher, along with 14 NCEA level 3 credits in each of Calculus and Physics or CIE A levels in Mathematics and Physics. All other applicants who have met the admission requirements will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Health science degrees
The popular Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy) and Bachelor of Health Science (Oral Health) degrees give preference to the highest level of academic achievement (highest performing students) and/or evidence of accomplishments in the relevant field. However, there is no set rank score that guarantees entry to these degrees.
RANK SCORES
How we calculate the rank score
NCEA
• 80 best level 3 NCEA credits in University Entrance approved subjects are weighted by level of achievement
• No more than 24 credits per subject will be counted
• If a student achieves fewer than 80 credits at level 3 or higher, the score will be calculated on achieved credits
Excellence: 4 points Merit: 3 points Achieved: 2 points
Note: Excellence and Merit credits are counted first, followed by the required number of Achieved, up to the maximum total of 80 credits.
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
• Based on the student’s UCAS Tariff score
• No more than six subject units over the last two years of study will be counted in subjects at AS, A2 or A level from subjects that match the NCEA University Entrance approved subjects
• The rank score may differ from the UCAS Tariff used for University Entrance because only subjects equivalent to NCEA approved subjects will be used for calculating
• An A level counts as two subject units and an AS level counts as one subject unit. Students who have studied more than six subject units can count only the six best scores
International Baccalaureate (IB)
• The student must have achieved the IB Diploma (24 points)
• We will evaluate students on the number of points achieved above 24
