Right from medical school days I’ve wanted to do neurosurgery. Now that I have actually done an attachment in it, I realise it’s not right for me. So what do I do?

I definitely want to do surgery. All I need to know is what are the best runs to do and how do I get into the training programme as quickly as possible?

Internal medicine sounds good but do I really want to be a medical registrar?

Increased competition for jobs & training places

Increased number of medical school graduates

‐ 2004 – 285 graduates‐ 2016 – 565 graduates

More doctors staying in NZ

Nationally…

RMO Commission (2009) foundRMOs were dissatisfied . . .

Lack of career planning

Not getting attachments

RMOs felt “lost” in the Intern years

Health Workforce NZ (HWNZ) responded & made it a requirement that . . .

All junior doctors must have1. access to career planning2. a career plan

Annual career report submitted to HWNZ

Hospital funding will be dependent on meeting these requirements

So… how did we respond?and where are we at now?
