3For the 8th consecutive year, KSU and AIESEC have teamed up together in order to organize the yearly Careers’ Convention. The whole concept of this event involves merging the attributes synonymous to University that is academia as well as student life together with those in common to work opportunities with the intention of bridging the gap between students and prospective employers. This year, Careers Convention shall be focusing on four different activities, these being stands hosted by various representatives from both national and international companies based in Malta, a write up by these companies in this magazine as well as on our new website www.carrersconvention.org and also sessions specifically targeting areas within employment delivered by professionals in the field to interested students.

Whilst encouraging students to approach the various entities which shall be present on the University Quadrangle in order to offer work placements, we have also acknowledged the fact that not everyone shall be able to be physically present during the event. Thus, one may also be able to follow Careers’ Convention on various social media tools such as Facebook and twitter as well as on KSU and AIESEC’s respective websites.

A number of Careers Convention representatives shall be available during the week in order to assist students with regards to finding their way around as well as informing them on the proceedings within the programme of events. A number of banners shall also be set up throughout the week with detailed information available to students.

KSU believes that whilst University life prepares the student holistically to become a worker, Careers’ Convention provides an insight on the working sector and may help in the preparation of the student by stimulating initiative and interest.

Over the past 110 years, KSU has been working on:

Representing students in whatever issues concern them, whether these are on a national or international level

Serving as an official link between students and the relevant authorities

Achieving the democratisation of education in Malta

Coordinating activities together with other organisations

Cultivating students’ interest in the educational field, and in socio-political and cultural issues

Pressuring authorities into assuring the highest level of quality in Higher Education

This year, KSU has also revamped its career opportunities page found under http://careers.ksu.org.mt/. Through this web page, one may filter through the numerous job listings available and apply for one through creating a careerpassport profile. This service enables prospective students to keep track of applications, update their details as well as send their curriculum vitae to multiple companies. Such a service is also offered free of charge within the KSU Careers web page.

The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts (MCCA) was established by Act V CAP 444 of 2002 in order ‘to promote Malta’s culture through all forms of creative expression and to increase the accessibility of the public to the arts, and enhance Malta’s cultural heritage locally and abroad.’

The MCCA took over from what was known as the Department of Culture which was part of the Ministry of Culture in 2003. The MCCA is authorized and obliged by the Act, amongst other objectives, to advance funds allocated by Government for the management, administration and operational requirements of the following government entities: Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, Malta Society of Arts, Manufacturing and Commerce, Manoel Theatre, Mediterranean Conference Centre, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Centre for Creativity at St. James Cavalier. The MCCA encourages and promotes culture from a wide socio-economic perspective. The MCCA is also the cultural advisor to the Ministry of Culture. The MCCA operates at arm’s length from Government and is currently responsible for the organisation of the national festivals such as the Malta Arts Festival, the Mediterranean Folk Music Festival (Għanafest), Carnival, the Malta Jazz Festival and Notte Bianca, which form an intrinsic part of

the local cultural calendar.

Our core values of Excellence, Teamwork and Leadership are the foundation of our organization and guide all our actions and behaviours. In particular, we are committed to making PwC a great place to work and these values help create an environment where our people can flourish through our commitment to enhance a coaching culture; diverse overseas opportunities and a dedicated learning and education programme. By enrolling in either of our 2 programmes, we offer our students excellent development opportunities:

CareerDeal programme - CareerDeal, a student internship programme that has been successfully running for a number of years, aims to strike a healthy balance between the support an accountancy student needs throughout their university studies, and the coaching they require to better prepare themselves for the profession. PwC invests in CareerDeal students by offering them chance to participate in our Corporate Social Responsibility programme, attend tutorials, job shadow and experience work in the different lines of service.

ACCA full-time study programme – Our ACCA programme aims to accelerate the learning curve of our students and offers a fast track route into the profession. PwC Academy will provide students with dedicated classroom tuition to ensure that they are thoroughly prepared for the ACCA exams. This programme is planned over approximately 6 examination sittings and during this time the firm invests in students by offering a monthly study grant. Although on a full-time study basis, PwC will expose students to work in the different lines of service to help compliment their studies with practical experience.

Accounting students who have started their second year of B.Commerce degree and have Accountancy as one of their major subjects are eligible to apply for the PwC CareerDeal programme

Students with a background in accountancy as well as those having a background in disciplines other than accounting who are in their final year of studies and are willing to take on their ACCA studies full-time are eligible to join the ACCA full-time study programme.

CareerDeal programme / ACCA full-time study programme – We will be holding two presentations (one for each programme) to explain who we are and the opportunities that the firm has to offer. Students eligible to the relevant programme (see above) are invited to attend our presentation and to bring along with them the application form (also available on our website: www.pwc.com/mt) together with a passport sized photo, a CV and a transcript of academic results so far.

European Union Programmes Agency (EUPA)

The EUPA supports Maltese individuals and entities in availing themselves of funding under the various educational programmes provided by the European Commission. Yet the aim of the agency is not simply a financial contribution but to contribute towards a holistic development of the community as an advanced knowledge society.

Apart from the main Education and Training programmes, which are the Youth in Action and Lifelong Learning Programme (Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Comenius and Grundtvig), the agency manages locally the following information points:

Eurodesk Malta, which is part of a European network of information services in 33 countries providing a unique access to European information for young people and those who work with them. More information about Eurodesk Malta at www.eurodesk.org.mt.

Euroguidance Malta, which is part of a network of centres linking together the Careers Guidance systems in Europe. Euroguidance promotes mobility, helping guidance counsellors and individuals to better understand the opportunities available to European citizens throughout Europe. More information about Euroguidance Malta at www.euroguidance.org.mt.

Europass

Europass is an initiative that helps people make their skills and qualifications easier to understand. This initiative consists of 5 documents developed at European level with the aim to make qualifications more transparent. Europass also aims to facilitate mobility across Europe and encourage lifelong learning.

The Europass initiative provides a chance for individuals to communicate their qualifications, skills and competences more effectively, when looking for a job, enrolling in an education or training programme, or getting experience abroad. It therefore makes it easier for employers to understand the qualifications and competences of job-seekers from other EU Member States. It also helps education, training and guidance practitioners to advice people about the most suitable learning paths and opportunities.

Europass has a number of benefits associated with it, by providing a comprehensive tool for users based on an accessible electronic format. It makes it possible for people with different backgrounds and experience to gain access to employment and learning throughout Europe - supporting, mobility between countries and across employment sectors. Europass is a tool supporting employment since employers receive comparable information from different applicants. Employers can therefore better assess the proper value of qualifications and skills. Moreover, it promotes cooperation and possible synergies between education & training and industry with the aim to ensure relevance of competences and qualifications. Europass is an open system that supports European policy developments related to the transparency of competences and qualifications.

This year welcomes the 8th edition of the highly anticipated annual Bay Music Awards. Promising to be bigger and better than ever, the event will stay true to custom by maintaining the standard venue and date which see the awards take place on December 12th at the Bay Arena, whilst the perfect dose of innovation is added just to spice things up and keep it ‘fresh’!Bay Breakfast’s Drew, Drive time’s Nathan and 89.7 Bay’s newest addition, Ben Glover - will keep the crowd hyped and on their toes between performances, as a noteworthy line-up of Malta’s best musical talents take the stage in hopes of making you SCREAM! That’s right, the tagline - ‘Are you ready to SCREAM’ – is there for a reason, as this year’s event is all about the noise, and it’s your responsibility to make it!

The ‘Raise the Roof Award’ will be introduced for the very first time this year, and will see artists and bands strive to put on the greatest performances, in an attempt to get the crowd, and their adoring fans to roar as loud as possible, as it is the sheer volume and strength of screams received from the audience that will determine a winner for this category.

Those attending have no excuse to hold back, as the event is taking place on the eve of a public holiday, which means that everyone can truly let their hair down, jump around, and scream to the point of exhaustion - enjoy the show to the fullest, without the worry of an early start the following day. Awards will also be presented for the seven classic categories held each year, including the Presenter’s Choice Award, and the Viewer’s Choice Award.

To vote, listeners need to text in the artist or band name to the unique SMS number supplied for that category. Voting is restricted to 3 SMS’s per category from a single mobile number, with each SMS is charged at a rate of €0.49. Those voting can do so until the closing date on Sunday, 4th December, and will also stand a chance of winning an entertainment-packed weekend by casting a vote.

This package would include a two night break at InterContinental Malta, dinner at Paranga restaurant, an assortment of cinema and bowling tickets, and much more!
