Careers News Edition 5
Monday 30.07.18
Welcome to “The Term of Transition”. It is traditionally a very hectic term with much happening in Careers & Pathways office. Already, on Thursday 19 July we ran our annual the Year 10 Course Selection Information evening. All Year 10 students will now embark on discussions about whether the VCE or VCAL programs are most suited to their style of learning and potential pathway. In this edition there is a comparison between the two programs and possible post-secondary pathways.
The Year 9 Course Selection evening also took place last Wednesday 25 July. It seems like only yesterday that we invited Year 9 parents to a special VCE, VCAL and VET Later Years Pathway information evening. Year 10 Personalised Course Selection packs were issued to all Year 9 students and families who attended. There was some significant discussion that occurred in the Break-out sessions. Our Year 12 students are only one week away from making a VTAC application. On Monday 6 August VTAC applications will open and all Year 12 students will undertake special VTAC briefing to be held in the Centenary Theatre where the finer detail and any changes to the VTAC process will be presented. See the Reminders section for further details.
VCE or VCAL – Which program is best for me?
This question may be on the minds of many Year 10 students at the moment. In this edition we will focus on this pathway question which, if carefully considered, can make a significant difference to a students’ learning journey and success over their final 2 years at senior school. According to the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority) the VCE is a good option for students who would like to go on to further education at university. However, some students or parents might feel that this is not the right option for your child or you. Just like the VCE, the VCAL is an accredited senior secondary school qualification undertaken in Years 11 and 12. The VCAL is based on hands-on learning, also known as 'applied learning'. If a student chooses to do the VCAL, they will gain practical experience and 'employability' skills, as well as the skills needed to go onto further training in the workplace or at a TAFE.
Essentially the Victorian Certificate of Applied learning (VCAL) allows students to learn in a competency based learning environment with a focus on ‘Applied’ tasks rather than exams and tests that exist in the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) where textbooks and summaries are part of the core learning strategies. What is the difference between the VCE and VCAL programs at Williamstown High School? Here are some basic differences between the VCE and VCAL programs at Williamstown High School.
https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vcal/aboutvcal.aspx The diagram below also demonstrates how students can pathway into University after completing either the VCE or VCAL programs.
Within the VCAL program students will study a VET (Vocational Education and Training) Certificate (a subject) and essentially graduate at the end of their 2 years with their VCAL Certificate and their VET Certificate. Whilst VET Certificates are also possible with in the VCE course, at Williamstown High school, these courses such as VET Community Services or Music Industry Sound Production

can offer students an insight into vocational education that has a practical base which can also break up the academic rigour found in many VCE
subjects. Williamstown High School belongs to the Hobsons Bay VET Cluster of schools and a comprehensive list of the many VET subjects on offer within the cluster schools can be found on the Williamstown High School website in the Hobsons Bay VET Cluster Handbook 2019 which is located under the Learning and Teaching tab http://www.willihigh.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2018-WHS_Handbook-Pages.pdf Students who undertake the VCAL program are more likely to be interested in going on to training at TAFE, doing an apprenticeship, or getting a job after completing Year 12. As a part of the VCAL program students can also undertake an SBAT (School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship) A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) is an apprenticeship or traineeship undertaken by a student enrolled in a senior secondary program (VCE or VCAL), with at least one day per week timetabled to be spent on the job or in training during the normal school week. Although very rarely undertaken in the VCE, an SBAT is a great way for VCAL students to structure a personalised program where a combination of paid employment and training occurs. An SBAT combines:
part-time, practical experience in the workplace
recognised, structured training with a Registered Training Organisation (VET Training)
See link below for an extensive guide on SBAT’s. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/principals/curriculum/sbatguide.pdf

With the upcoming Open Day season for TAFEs and Universities almost upon us, it might be worth providing our students with some tips and advice for how to make the most out of the experience. My Future have just published some new articles which will help students and parents to plan their day effectively and to approach the day with excitement rather than anxiety. Start with 8 ways to a great university open day and then have a look in the ‘what to read next’ column to guide you to related material. There’s lots more information for parents on the new Assist your child feature page too. My Future has created new articles to help students on topics such as how to select senior school subjects and how to make the most of Open Days. Also included are new personal career stories detailing career paths and opportunities explored like taking a gap year. Students and parents will find this site incredibly useful, informative and some other areas students can look at are: How to select senior school subjects. Lawyers provide advice, write documents and conduct negotiations on legal matters, and may represent clients in court and tribunal proceedings. They are described as solicitors or barristers, depending on the work they do. Lawyers undertake a range of tasks including:
Interviewing clients to determine the nature of problems and recommend the appropriate legal action
Prepare cases for court by conducting investigations, undertaking research, arranging witness preparation and attendance, and giving notice of court actions.
Represent clients in court
Manage conveyancing and other property matters by preparing contracts of sale, mortgage documents, lease documents and other documents relating to the transfer of land and buildings
Prepare and critically review contracts between parties
Prepare wills
Provide advice on family law and trusts
Act as trustee or guardian
Act as executor of clients’ wills.
The four specialisations in law are:
Barrister – provides legal advice and drafts
Judge – presides over civil and criminal proceedings in courts of law, making sure that trials are run fairly, according to the rules of law and evidence
Magistrate – hears criminal matters to determine whether defendants will be committed for trial, and judge’s criminal offences without a jury
Solicitor – may specialise in areas such as property, probate, worker’s compensation, family law, personal injuries litigation, commercial law or criminal law.
The distinction between solicitors and barristers varies from state to state. In NSW, Victoria and Queensland, lawyers practice as either a solicitor or a barrister. In the
ACT, the NT, SA, Tasmania and WA, the work of barristers and solicitors is usually combined, with many lawyers describing themselves as a ‘barrister and solicitor’. To consider law, it is helpful to have integrity and be of good character, have good oral and written communication skills, be able to understand, analyse and use facts quickly and logically, be able to work under pressure and deal with a variety of people. To become a lawyer, you usually have to complete a degree at university. To get into these courses you usually need to gain your VCE with English. Students are often advised to undertake a combined degree course that leads to two degrees. The prerequisite subjects required for entry into these combined courses depend on the non-law component of the combined course. To work as a lawyer in Australia, you must obtain a Local Practicing Certificate. To be granted a certificate, further study and an approved practical training course after the completion of a law degree is required. On completion of the required academic and practical legal training, you may apply to the Supreme Court for admission as a lawyer. To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the requirements of the legal board of Victoria. Qualified legal practitioners may undertake further study to obtain a barrister’s practicing certificate to become a barrister. For further information on post-degree requirements, contact the Law Institute of Victoria (www.liv.asn.au)
