What is Astrophysics?
Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the
universe, including the physical properties (luminosity, density, temperature, and
chemical composition) of celestial objects such as galaxies, stars, planets,
exoplanets, and the interstellar medium, as well as their interactions. The study of
cosmology addresses questions of astrophysics at scales much larger than the size
of particular gravitationally-bound objects in the universe.
What they do.
Conduct research into the phases of physical phenomena, develop theories and
laws on the basis of observation and experiments, and devise methods to apply
laws and theories to industry and other fields.
Physicists and astronomers held about 17,100 jobs in 2008.

EarningsBased on Kuders estimates.
Salary is, admittedly, a highpriority for me.
Annual salaries for the anyonein thefield of physics is, comparatively, very high.

Necessary Post-High School
EducationEducation:
Doctoral degree or a bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education
required for this occupation. However, it may also require graduate school.
The major, of course, is in Astrophysics.
Experience:
Extensive skill, knowledge, and experience are needed for this occupation. May
require more than five years of experience.
Training:
Employees may need some on-the-job training, but this occupation usually
assumes that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-

College of Choice:
California Institute of TechnologyMission Statement
The mission of the California Institute of
Technology is to expand human knowledge and
benefit society through research integrated with
education. We investigate the most challenging, fundamental problems in science and technology
in a singularly collegial, interdisciplinary
atmosphere, while educating outstanding students
to become creative members of society.

Tasks/Duties
Perform complex calculations as part of the analysis and evaluation of data, using computers.
Describe and express observations and conclusions in mathematical terms.
Analyze data from research conducted to detect and measure physical phenomena.
Report experimental results by writing papers for scientific journals or by presenting information at
scientific conferences.
Design computer simulations to model physical data so that it can be better understood.
Collaborate with other scientists in the design, development, and testing of experimental, industrial, or
medical equipment, instrumentation, and procedures.
Develop theories and laws on the basis of observation and experiments, and apply these theories andlaws
to problems in areas such as nuclear energy, optics, and aerospace technology.
Observe the structure and properties of matter, and the transformation and propagation of energy, using
equipment such as masers, lasers, and telescopes, in order to explore and identify the basic principles
governing these phenomena.
