A Letter From Rabbi Hirshel Jaffe, Temple Shalom’s First Rabbi
I have entered into remission from Lymphoma, and in thanks for my rescue, I have pledged to give back by helping The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society raise money for blood cancer research. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) funded the research for one of the drugs that helped put me into remission from an aggressive lymphoma.
Your support and my efforts will help fund the therapies and treatments that help save lives today and tomorrow. LLS' continued advancements over the years are responsible for the blood cancer
survival rate doubling and tripling. In some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled!
And many LLS-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients survive, but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. These therapies are being tested for patients with a wide range of cancers, and LLS funded drugs are now being investigated for patients with non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.
I would like to ask if you would consider a tax deductible donation, perhaps in honor or in memory of someone you know. Your donation will not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.
To learn more about the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, please visit www.lls.org.
With blessing ...Rabbi Hirshel Jaffe www.runningrabbi.org

I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking...I Was Just Thinking... This past month saw the passing of an incredible milepost - more than 10,000 days in prison for convicted Israeli spy - Jonathan Pollard. A recent article by Tabletmag editors highlights an interesting aspect of the Pollard case which I have excerpted here. According to the editors, "...It should be ever more difficult for patriotic Jewish Americans - or
anyone else, for that matter - to believe that Jonathan Pollard, who has spent 29 years in prison for passing secret intelligence documents to Israel, is being punished for the very real crime to which he pleaded guilty in 1986. Pollard, a former naval intelligence analyst, has spent nearly three decades in prison for a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years under current U.S. law - more time than any other convicted spy in American history. He is the only person in American history to receive a life sentence for the crime of spying in a case involving a friendly country, and the only person convicted of such a crime to be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison."
These are some of the facts of the case. But, after all this time, we have to ask, "Why keep Pollard in prison? Has justice been served?" It appears, suggests the editors, that "...Pollard’s continued incarceration appears, at this point in time, to be intended as a statement that dual loyalty on the part of American Jews is a real threat to America - and a warning to the American Jewish community as a whole."
They continue... "But why do Jews need such a warning? In a country where no one drinks from separate water fountains and same-sex marriage is legal, the idea that American Jews are uniquely susceptible to the lures of serving two masters at once—and, therefore, need an extra-stiff dose of public deterrence to keep from selling out their fellow Americans - is as silly as it is vicious. In order to cover their own incredibly damaging mistakes and failures, the national security establishment is keeping Pollard in prison on the apparent grounds that Jews are especially prone to disloyalty. The fact that American Jews are afraid to answer this entirely self-interested slur against our entire community makes us - all of us - a target for political bullying by people who believe, or find profit in suggesting, that we have something to hide. It is time for the American Jewish community to put the Pollard case to rest - not by letting him rot in prison, but by standing up against a real injustice whose perpetuation is clearly intended to suggest that all American Jews are, inherently, potential traitors to their country."
While we, in the Jewish community here in the United States, are loathe to think that institutional or government sponsored anti-semitism does exist, there are plenty of people in America, as well as the rest of the world, who strongly disagree with the characterization of American Jews, or Jews in general, as being no more and no less likely to turn on their country and sell out their neighbors. Allowing the American national security establishment to play on classic anti-Semitic stereotypes, in order to keep a man in prison as a “lesson” to other members of his group or race, is contrary to both the spirit and the letter of the U.S. Constitution - and would surely and rightly never be tolerated by Muslims, gays, blacks, Chinese-Americans, or any other group.
And, here is the real point - as the editors finally assert - that "...American Jews may want to ignore the intended message of the Pollard case - that we are second-class citizens because of our inherent political
untrustworthiness - but there is ample evidence that America’s enemies around the world have by now received that message, loud and clear: American Jews can be dealt with differently than other Americans, and with fewer consequences, even if they are directly employed by the American government. Ask the Iranians why they felt like they could seize former FBI Agent Robert Levinson - recently revealed to have gone to Iran under contract with the CIA
- with impunity and continue to obfuscate about his whereabouts, even as they have sought to negotiate an end to sanctions with the Obama Administration. Ask the Cubans why they feel like they can continue to hold USAID contractor Alan Gross while lobbying for increasing trade ties. Ask the members of the Pakistani intelligence service, the ISI, who clearly know, or could find out, the whereabouts of longtime USAID contractor Warren Weinstein. They do it because they know that they can get away with it. They do it because America does it, too.
Putting a target on the backs of American Jews who serve their country in dangerous places is a terrible way to treat U.S. government contractors and employees - whether they are Jewish or not. Telling America’s enemies that, when it comes to questions of national security, Jews are different makes all Americans vulnerable, by sending the signal that America is a country that won’t protect its own."
I know this sounds like a harsh assessment and perhaps it is. I can't help but to feel that time served and the lesson of history has been learned. I would love to know what you think.
Rabbi Andrew Paley [email protected]
(Jonathan) Pollard’s continued
incarceration appears, at this
point in time, to be intended as a
statement that dual loyalty on
the part of American Jews is a
real threat to America—and a
warning to the American Jewish
community as a whole.

The President’s Perspective
I really love harmony. Yes, I’m “that guy” at services who is often, if not constantly, finding a
harmonious part to sing along with Rabbi Paley, Rabbi Boxman, my family or those around me
during worship. I like the way harmonious music sounds to my ear, my heart and my soul.
Voices or instruments, or voices and instruments, harmonizing to create a richer, deeper sound
adds a layer to an individual melody that resonates with me. I love the harmony our choir shares
during the High Holy Days when they complement each other, our worship leaders and our
entire congregation. My musical family makes sharing music and providing harmonious other
parts feel like second nature to me.
I also love when people are in harmony with each other in their personal and professional relationships. Finding
that harmonious place with a spouse, child, parent, friend, employer or employee makes for a very special, fulfilling
relationship.
An important step to finding that harmonious place with others is finding that place within ourselves so that we
can be a complementary piece within a community and a partner in strong, balanced, healthy relationships. Prayer,
worship, study, and community at Temple Shalom have helped me, my family and many others find that internal
grounding so that we can be that complementary, harmonious part to others’ melodies.
I look forward to years of prayer, worship, study and community with you as we continue our journey together.
Hoping to harmonize with you soon!

Purim is a time for having fun,
being silly, eating delicious
hamantaschen and for giving one
another gifts and treats (mishloach
manot), but it is also a holiday
which teaches us the importance
of tolerance and religious freedom.
When dressing up in fun costumes
and eating candy and cookies, we
can easily forget the important
message in our Purim story. Purim celebrates the
heroism of Queen Esther who spoke out in defense of
her people and saved the Jewish people from
annihilation. Because of a long history of religious
intolerance, Jews have been persecuted, killed and
have suffered tremendous set backs, however, time
and time again, we have been victorious and have
survived as a people.
In an effort to remind our students of this important
aspect of Purim, the fight against religious intolerance,
I organized an opportunity for interfaith education and
relationship building. In conjunction with The Covenant
School, a Christian school located in our
neighborhood, we have organized an educational
exchange of cards and gifts between our respective 5th
and 6th grade students. On Valentine’s Day, the
students from Covenant made handmade cards for our
students with Christian Scripture that was meaningful
to them. I delivered the cards to our students on
Sunday, February 16th and used this wonderful
opportunity to discuss the differences between
Christianity and Judaism and help them understand
the Jewish value of kavod (respect). I explained that,
while Christians
and Jews may
have different
beliefs and
religious
understandings,
we must always
respect one
another. The
students asked
great questions
and were very interested in continuing the relationship
with their Christian peers at Covenant.
On Purim, our 5th and 6th grade students will return
the gesture by assembling mishloach manot (Purim
gifts) for the students at Covenant. In each gift bag
there will be a pamphlet which explains our holiday of
Purim and a personal card from each student with a
meaningful Torah verse. My hope is that the students
at Covenant (some who may have never met a Jewish
student) will learn a little bit about our faith and come to
respect and honor religious differences and beliefs.
As a staunch believer in interfaith dialogue and
relationship building, I know that this exercise will be
beneficial for all children involved and will hopefully be
the beginning of a long relationship with The Covenant
School. When we can learn to respect one another and
celebrate differences rather than fear them, we will
know peace. And, as Whitney Houston so beautifully
sang, “I believe the children are our future, teach them
well and let them lead the way.”
Wishing you all a fun and meaningful Purim!
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Ariel Boxman

The Connections Council and Religious School would like to invite all parents (or whoever drops off the kids for Sunday school), to STAY & PLAY with us! We’ll be serving coffee, bagels and cream cheese from 9:30am – 11:30am in the Congregational Gathering Space for any and everyone to enjoy. Hope you’ll join us. If you have any questions or ideas, e-mail Connections Council Co-Chairs, Diane Laner or Irene Sibaja, at [email protected].
IT’S GAME DAY! We’ll have a variety of games to play, including Mah Jongg, Scrabble and other board games.
Whether you are a novice, or ultra-competitive, you won’t be “bored” during this week’s Stay & Play. And if the weather is good, a walk around the neighborhood is in store!
BROTHERHOOD BREAKFAST AND BLOOD DRIVE. You may find a variety of cream cheese
flavors at Brotherhood’s breakfast, but we always have flavored creamers at Stay & Play!
CATCH UP ON YOUR PHOTO ALBUMS AND SCRAPBOOKING. Bring your photos from
Spring Break, or that pile of pictures you’ve been meaning to put in an album or scrapbook, and make great use of the couple of hours that the kids are in Religious School. We’ll have some tools for you to borrow, but feel free to bring papers or stickers to trade or share!

Professional assistance was provided by employees of the Community Council of Greater Dallas, Methodist Hospital System, and Parkland Health & Hospital System. Community members were warmly greeted by Temple Shalom volunteers, and an education session was provided by Dr. Barry Lachman and Dr. Stan Pomerantz of Dallas Area Interfaith.
The comments and feedback from participants demonstrated gratitude for this mitzvah, and expressed appreciation to Temple Shalom in bringing education and assistance to our community. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and brought their care and concern forward to help our neighbors achieve access to health insurance.

BROTHERHOOD
Brotherhood Board Meeting
Wednesday
March 19
7:15pm Boardroom
All Brotherhood Members Invited.
Stronger - Together!
Crack! What’s that noise? Thump! What was that?
Those are the sounds of the horsehide spheroid striking against the finely crafted wooden clubbing instrument. A ball and a bat, and it means spring is almost here. The spikes are coming out of the locker, and the batting cage is coming out of its grotto under the grandstand.
So, it is in the spirit of competition that the Brotherhood and Sisterhood attempt to play Bingorita on Sunday, March 1st. Bingorita is a game in which the contestants see how many Margaritas can be drunk during a Bingo game, before the B column appears on the right hand side of the Bingo card and the O on the left. In Hebrew, it’s called Bingomogendavid.
Mind you, this is the same Sisterhood who celebrated its second place finish to the Brotherhood in Family Feud by buying itself a 2nd Place Trophy that is so large, that their trophy case was given reconstructive surgery so the 2nd Place Trophy would fit. It’s the first trophy case that has ever needed a nose job.
Guys’ Night Out is Thursday, March 6th. Brotherhood members…join your Brothers for bowling and beer at Bowl and Barrel. See who falls first...the pins or the bowlers.
The Brotherhood Board of Directors meets Wednesday, March 19th. Brotherhood members who want to see an out-of-control, chaotic meeting are encouraged to attend.
Sunday, March 23rd, it’s time to pony up and donate blood. The Brotherhood is holding another blood drive. Do the Mitzvah of Life. The Blood Drive is in concert with a Brotherhood speaker breakfast at 9:00am. The speaker is so good, we don’t want to tell you who it is yet.
Saturday, March 29th is Hockey Night in Allen. We’re going to see the Americans play at the Allen Event Center. And, there is no truth to the rumor that Brotherhood members who talk out of order at Board meetings will do two minutes in the Penalty Box for Unsportsmanlike Conduct. However, High Shticking will draw two consecutive minor penalties.
One of the Brotherhood’s Signature Events is coming in April. Our Community Seder is Tuesday, April 15th. If you’ve never attended one, then you’ve never attended one. Be there. See the flyer on page 18 in this newsletter.

contact Joy Addison in Rabbi Paley’s office at 972-661-1810 x201 or
[email protected]. Clergy and volunteers are here to
help during times of need and celebration.
Remember the Temple in Your Will
Temple Shalom is committed to preserving the future of our congregation for generations to come. Bequests of all sizes are important resources for the Temple, and we encourage you to be a link to the future by remembering the Temple in your will. Your lasting tribute is your commitment to the survival of our religion, our Temple, and our people.
A bequest can easily be established by adding a simple codicil to your will. Additionally, many other options exist to leave a legacy for Temple Shalom.
A brochure with more information is available in our main foyer, or by contacting the administrative offices. For more information, please contact our Executive Director Steve Lewis at 972-661-1810 x202.
Your planned gift will serve the future of our congregation and community. Thank you for helping assure the strength and health of Temple Shalom for generations to come.
Welcome New Members to Our Temple Shalom Family!

Our mission is to inspire in you
a relationship with God, Torah and
the Jewish people. Do you know
someone we should invite to
Temple, someone who is new to
Dallas or is not connected to a
congregation?
Please contact Executive
Director Steve Lewis so we can
show them that Temple Shalom is
their place.
Celebrating a SIMCHA?
Give the gift of Israel! Consider the purchase of an
eMitzvah bond for as little as $36. The recipient will
receive the principal plus interest at the end of the 5 year
term. You can now invest in an Israel bond online for any
occasion, at any time. Simply go to
www.israelbonds.com, create an account and purchase a
bond.
The directory is updated periodically. Please
send any changes to Heidi at
