1. Overview

Based on the Personal Emergency Response System (Social Alarm), and enhanced by the Care@Home™ analytics functionality, the Care@Home™ product suite focuses on providing an all-encompassing monitoring environment that captures the daily routine of the resident.

The Care@Home™ system is designed to alert healthcare service providers or family members of any deviation from the resident’s daily routine, enabling proactive, personal, and real-time care, anywhere, and anytime.

The main software component of the Care@Home™ product suite is the Care@Home™ system which

includes the Care web application and the Care mobile app, and the optional Care@Home™ Active app.

The Care web application and the Care app provide users with the tools to analyze and use the information gathered by the Care@Home™ Control Panel (CP) and its peripheral devices.

The Active app is used when setting up the optional Active service.

NOTE: The Care@Home™ System Installation User Guide refers to version 2.4.2

of the Care@Home™ system.

1.1. Care Web Application

The Care web application allows the administrator to control access to Care@Home™ and to the

information gathered by the Care@Home™ CMS CP and its peripheral devices.

1.2. The Care@Home™ CMS System

The Care@Home™ CMS software application allows the system administrator to configure and define the technical parameter values to set up the CP and its peripheral devices, according to customer requirements.

The Care@Home™ system is a combination of motion detectors and specialized sensors, calibrated to:

Recognize activity

Determine the nature of the activity

Distinguish between an acceptable event and a threat to the security and safety of the resident

Acceptable events are used to define the profile of the resident’s habits and daily routine.

Threat events include safety and security related incidents, in addition to activities that are exceptions to the resident’s profile. Threat events are reported to the monitoring station and the caregiver for further investigation and resolution.

1.5. Sensor Functionality

The motion detectors report information to the CP about detected activities.

The motion detectors identify movement when the resident crosses in front of the detector, and not when the resident moves directly towards or away from the detector. To ensure that movement is detected, place the motion detector at an angle to the coverage area.

For example, if the coverage area in the living room is the couch and its immediate surroundings, the motion detector should be placed to the side of the couch, at an angle, such that the detector can view the couch.

Activity is recognized when movement is detected by two or more consecutive motion detectors in different locations, such as moving from room to room within the residence.

For example, movement is detected by the motion detector installed in the restroom and by the detector in the bathroom. The consecutive movement detections define an activity. In this case, the activity is recognized as restroom activity.

1.6. Peripherals

The analytics engine of the Care@Home™ system uses the activities detected by the motion detectors and specialized sensors to define a profile of the resident’s habits and daily routine. The engine recognizes a specific set of activity types, relating to movement detected between locations within the premises.

The activity types represent the basic floor plan of the premises. The basic floor plan as defined by the Care@Home™ system is:

Activity reported by a peripheral device installed in or on one of these locations is identified by the parallel activity type. For example, an activity recognized in the living room is categorized as living room activity.

1.6.1 Kit Pre-Configured Activity Peripherals

The standard kit for the Care@Home™ system is based on the floor plan, and includes the following devices, pre-configured to communicate with the CP:

Two magnetic sensors (MGLS) for the front door and the fridge door included in the floor plan

For information about the MGLS, refer to the ESUGSC007 Care@Home™ MGLS User Guide.

Five motion detectors (PIR) for the designated rooms included in the floor plan

For information about the PIR, refer to the ESUGSC008 Care@Home™ PIR User Guide.

1.6.2 Optional Activity Peripherals

You have the option of installing an indoor camera detector to better monitor the resident’s activities. The indoor camera detector (IPD) includes the same motion detection functionality as the PIR.

For information about the IPD, refer to the ESUGSC006 Care@Home™ IPD User Guide.

If a room has more than 30 minutes of activity at one time, the room requires a motion detector. If the premises have more than one external door, such as a patio door or a back door, each external door requires an MGLS.

A CP can monitor and manage up to 64 peripheral devices. You can consider adding additional activity peripherals when the premises include more locations or exits than the basic floor plan.

To add an additional activity peripheral, you must configure the peripheral to communicate with the CP. To configure an activity peripheral, you must:

Add the serial number and the activity type of the peripheral to the CP, using the Care@Home™ CMS application.

Download the changes to the CP for the activity sensor, using the Care@Home™ CMS application.

Insert the batteries into the peripheral.

The “handshake” process, which enables the CP to recognize the new peripheral, occurs automatically following the insertion of the batteries.

1.6.3 Optional Safety Peripherals

To further ensure resident safety, you can consider adding safety peripherals to your Care@Home™ system configuration.

The following are the available safety peripherals:

Emergency Pendant Advanced (EPA): An emergency call peripheral with active fall detection.

For information about the EPA, refer to the ESUGSC032 Care@Home™ EPA User Guide.

Emergency Pendant Plus (EPP): An emergency call peripheral.

For information about the EPP, refer to the ESUGSC032 Care@Home™ EPA User Guide.

Emergency Pendant (EP): An emergency call peripheral.

For information about the EP, refer to the ESUGSC004 Care@Home™ EP User Guide.

Voice Panic Detector (VPD). This is an additional emergency call device with Intelligent Voice ActivationTM technology.

For information about the VPD, refer to the ESUGSC018 Care@Home VPD User Guide.

Smoke Detector (SK2): The SK2 is most effective if installed in the kitchen or dining area.

For information about the SK2, refer to the ESUGSC009 Care@Home™ SK2 User Guide.

Flood Detector (FL): The FL is most effective if installed in the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry.

For information about the FL, refer to the ESUGSC008 Care@Home™ FL User Guide.

To add a safety peripheral, you must configure the peripheral to communicate with the CP. To configure a safety peripheral, you must:

Add the serial number of the peripheral to the CP, using the Care@Home™ CMS application

Download the changes to the CP for the peripheral, using the Care@Home™ CMS application

Insert the batteries into the peripheral

The “handshake” process, which enables the CP to recognize the new peripheral, occurs automatically following the insertion of the batteries.

For information about adding a safety peripheral, refer to Add a Safety or SOS Device in the ESUG05074 Care@Home™ CMS Reference.

Since there is no battery insertion for the EPA or EPP after adding one of these devices to the CMS, you have to “pair” the device with the CP, using the PAIRING button on the CP.

2. Pre-Installation

To ensure a successful and effective installation, it is important to know some basic facts about the premises before attempting to install the Care@Home™ system. Essence recommends that before the installation, you interview the resident (or the family of the resident) to find out the information you need.

2.1. Residence Floor Plan Survey

Essence recommends that, during the interview, the resident (or the family of the resident) fills-out a short questionnaire about the floor plan of the premises. The questionnaire should cover specific issues such as:

Number of rooms

Functionality of rooms

Pets

Bathroom with toilet

Exit doors

The installer can use the questionnaire to identify the tools and equipment required for the installation, such as the number and type of:

Peripherals

Accessories

Batteries

There is an example questionnaire in Appendix A on page 31.

2.2. Installation Plan

You use the information from the interview and the questionnaire to define an installation plan.

The installation plan is a basic configuration of the peripherals needed to install adequate Care@Home™ system coverage of the premises. This configuration should consider non-standard requirements, such as pets, and bathrooms which include a toilet. The plan can also include requests for camera detection and safety equipment.

The installer uses this plan to determine the equipment required to complete the installation.

2.3. Prerequisites

Before you go to the premises to perform the installation, you should:

Register the resident as a resident user in the Care@Home™ Pro system

Register a temporary caregiver for test installation purposes

Prepare the tools and equipment needed to complete the installation

2.3.1 Registering the Resident

Before you go to the premises to perform the installation, you should register the resident in the Care@Home™ Pro system, using the Care web application.

To register a new resident in the Care@Home™ Pro system, you need:

The resident’s personal information:

Name

Gender

Address

Phone number

Information about the CP allocated to the resident:

Resident Account Number (mandatory)

Essence Panel Account Number (mandatory)

Essence Panel Serial Number (mandatory)

SIM-card Number for CP Cell number (optional)

For instructions on adding a new resident, refer to Adding a User in the ESUG05051 Care@Home™ Administrator User Guide.

2.3.2 Registering the Caregiver

To test the installation of the peripherals, you verify detection reports in the Care app. Refer to 3.6 Testing Peripheral Installation on page 21. To be able to do so, you must register a temporary caregiver in the Care@Home™ Pro system. After the temporary caregiver is registered, you must assign the resident to the caregiver. The registration and assignment processes are performed using the Care web application.

After the installation is tested and operational, you can remove the temporary caregiver from the system.

3.1. Planning the Installation

When you reach the premises where you are to install the Care@Home™ system, you must review the installation plan and adjust it accordingly.

1. Survey the premises to check if any unplanned tasks are required.

2. Ensure that you have the tools and equipment to complete the installation.

3. Determine where each peripheral should be placed in each room.

3.1.1 Performing the On-Site Survey

1. Tour the premises with the questionnaire and verify that the information gathered in the questionnaire is accurate.

2. Record any discrepancies in the questionnaire information, especially if the discrepancy requires additional installation tasks.

3. Review the discrepancies and adjust the installation plan accordingly.

4. If needed, add additional activity sensors (PIR, MGLS) to the Care@Home™ system, using the

Care@Home™ CMS application. Ensure that each activity sensor is assigned both a zone label and an activity type.

For information about adding activity sensors, refer to Add an Activity Sensor in the ESUG05074 Care@Home™ CMS Reference.

5. If there is a need for a camera detector, add an IPD to the Care@Home™ Pro system, using the Care@Home™ CMS application. Ensure that the IPD is assigned both a zone label and an activity type.

For information about installing an IPD, refer to the ESUGSC006 Care@Home™ IPD User Guide.

6. If there is a pet, add a pet immune lens in each PIR and IPD.

For the PIR, refer to Pet Immune Lens in the ESUGSC008 Care@Home™ PIR User Guide.

For the IPD, refer to Installing Pet Immune Lens in the ESUGSC006 Care@Home™ IPD User Guide.

7. If there is a combined bathroom and toilet, add an optical limiter in the motion detector assigned to the restroom (toilet) zone.

Refer to Optical Limiter in the ESUGSC008 Care@Home™ PIR User Guide.

8. If there is a need for safety devices, add the safety devices and ensure that you have the tools and equipment to install these devices. Refer to 1.6.3 Optional Safety Peripherals on page 10.

3.1.2 Ensuring Sufficient Installation Equipment

During the survey, steps 4 through 8 above describe actions that can lead to additional tasks requiring the installation of additional peripherals. It is important to have a surplus of equipment and tools to resolve any contingency.

For example, if there are pets on the premises, all PIR and IPD devices require a pet-immune lens. As the installer, you must have multiple pet immune lenses and the equipment needed for installation.

3.1.3 Determining Peripheral Placement

The PIR and IPD peripherals should be placed in a location that complies with the following guidelines:

An unobstructed view of the desired coverage area

At least 2 m (6 ft. 7 in.) high and at the correct angle to view activity in the desired coverage area

Away from any heat source or air-conditioning vents

Away from any glaring light sources

Not opposite doorways or hallways

No overlap in sensor coverage areas

3.2. Installing the CP

To install the CP, you need the following:

SIM-card, allocated by your cellular service provider

Backup battery, provided in your kit

Power cable, provided in your kit

Follow the installation instructions, including the placement recommendations, listed in the ESUGSC003 Care@Home™ CP User Guide.

Verify that the installation of the CP is successful as follows:

Check that the power LED is lit green and stable.

Check that the communications LED is lit green and stable.

Check the cellular reception of a mobile device using the same cellular service provider. Ensure the reception level is at least two bars.

Check the GSM coverage in the CMS Panel Info window or the CMS Home screen after connecting the CP to the CMS application. Ensure the cellular reception is at least 80%.

NOTE: Do not replace the back cover of the CP until after you complete the installation process.

3.3. Activate the Installation Mode

Since the peripherals are pre-configured to their assigned locations, the CP can help guide you through the installation process using vocal announcements. This is the Installation Mode program.

To enable Installation Mode:

1. Locate the TEST pinhole on the back of the CP.

2. Insert the open end of a paperclip or probe into the pinhole, as shown in Figure 5.

3. Push the paper clip or probe in the pinhole until you feel a click. The CP announces “Installation test starts.”

3.4. Mapping Peripherals to their Locations

The peripherals in the kit are pre-configured to communicate with the CP included in the kit. Each peripheral is assigned a location on the premises where the peripheral must be installed.

Essence provides you with a few ways to ensure that you install the peripherals in their assigned locations.

3.4.1 Kit Label

Figure 6 shows the label on the inside of the Care@Home™ kit cover.

The label lists the CP and the peripherals included in the kit and shows:

The location assigned to the peripheral

The Essence part number of each device

The barcode and serial number of each device

Any additional peripherals added due to additional rooms or doors on the premises, such as a second restroom, a guest bedroom, or a back door, do not appear on the label.

According to its serial number, each of the peripherals is classified by an activity type. The activity type is assigned with a location on the premises. The assignment of an activity type is essential for recognizing activities and defining a resident daily routine. Therefore, it is important that the peripherals are installed in their assigned locations.

NOTE: The CP is not assigned a location. It is up to you, the installer, to determine the best location on the premises to place the CP.

3.4.2 Peripheral Location Labels

To further ensure that the peripherals are installed in their assigned locations, Essence provides you with location labels, as shown in Figure 7.

Apply the location labels to the peripherals according to their serial numbers in the list provided on the kit label, on the inside of the kit cover. For example, Figure 8 shows the PIR assigned to the bedroom with the bedroom label.

For additional peripherals, apply the appropriate label when the installation mode identifies the activity type of the peripheral.

3.4.3 Installation Mode Guidance

Pre-configuration of the CP and its peripherals allows the CP to recognize each of the peripherals when they are activated.

For example, after you insert the batteries in the PIR assigned to the bedroom and move 2 m (6 ft. 7 in.) away from the CP, the CP recognizes the PIR and announces the assigned location: bedroom.

When you test the peripheral installation in the bedroom location and the PIR detects movement, the CP announces the name of the room assigned to the PIR. This is verification that the PIR is installed correctly and is communicating the movement detections to the CP.

3.5. Installing Peripherals

The following is the procedure to install the Care@Home™ peripherals, pre-configured to communicate with the installed CP.

Essence recommends you install the peripherals in the following sequence:

1. Install a magnetic sensor (MGLS) on the refrigerator door.

2. Install an MGLS on the front door.

3. Install a motion detector (PIR) in the bedroom.

4. Install a PIR in the restroom (toilet room).

5. Install a PIR in the bathroom.

6. Install a PIR in the living room.

7. Install a PIR in the dining room.

8. Install additional activity peripherals (PIR and MGLS) as determined during the planning stage.

Perform each peripheral installation according to the following general installation procedure:

1. Insert the batteries in the peripheral. When CP recognizes the peripheral, the CP installation mode program gives a prompt to verify correct placement and that detection is working.

2. Secure the peripheral in its pre-determined location, using either double-side adhesive mounting-tape (recommended) or screws and wall anchors (if preferred).

3. Test the peripheral installation. Refer to 3.6 Testing Peripheral Installation on page 21.

3.6. Installing the Active Service Before installing the Active service, ensure the resident's smartphone meets the following requirements:

Apple: iOS 9.0 or later

Android™: OS 4 or later

Minimum mobile screen size of 4.7”

1. If the resident has the Active service, download the Active app from the Apple® App Store or the Google™ Play Store and install it on the resident's smartphone.

2. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled.

3. If the resident’s phone is a Xiaomi:

a. Tap Security App > Permissions, and toggle Autostart to on for Care@Home™ Pro Active

b. Tap Settings > Battery & Performance > Manage apps battery usage > Choose apps > Care@Home™ Pro Active, and set to no restrictions

4. Ensure you have the resident's smartphone and EPA within 50 cm (20 in.) of the control panel.

5. Run the Active app, and follow the onscreen instructions. The app confirms when the Active service is set up by displaying “Successfully Registered.”

3.6.1 Checking Active Service Settings

To check the Active service settings, you tap Settings in the app. The following is displayed:

Caution: Typically, there is no need to change the DNS settings. Therefore, do not change the DNS settings unless specifically instructed to do so by a technical support representative.

3.6.2 Outgoing Call Settings

You can change the outgoing call settings, if required.

If Enable Outgoing Call is On, a telephone call is triggered when there is an emergency alarm.

If Call Default Emergency Number is:

On, the emergency alarm call goes to the telephone number specified by the service provider.

Off, the emergency alarm call goes to the telephone number specified at Emergency Call Number.

3.6.3 Changing the Emergency Call Number

To change the Emergency Call Number:

1. Tap the number. The following screen is displayed:

3.7. Testing Peripheral Installation

1. Perform the following test on the premises:

c. Open and close the main door. Ensure that the MGLS on the door sends a detection event to the CP.

d. Open and close the refrigerator door. Ensure that the MGLS on the door sends a detection event to the CP.

e. Walk around the premises passing by each of the motion detectors. Ensure that the CP announces detections for each of the peripherals.

f. Wait 10 minutes.

g. Log in to the Care app, using the credentials of the temporary caregiver you registered as part of the installation prerequisites.

For instructions about caregiver registration, refer to 2.3.2 Registering the Caregiver on page 12.

h. Tap the Movement Level icon on the Status screen of your mobile device.

i. Ensure that the activity bars on the Movement Level query indicate movement, as shown in Figure 9.

2. Press the EMERGENCY CALL button on the CP and check that the monitoring station answers.

3. If the installation fails:

a. Retrace your installation steps and try to find where the process went wrong.

b. Check the list of troubleshooting solutions. Refer to 6 Troubleshooting on page 30.

c. Contact professional services or technical support for assistance.

3.8. Ending Installation

The installation process is complete when you:

Test the Care@Home™ Pro system. Refer to 3.6 Testing Peripheral Installation on page 21.

Deactivate the CP installation mode. Refer to 3.7.1 Deactivate Installation Mode on page 25.

Close the CP. Refer to 3.7.2 Close the CP on page 25.

3.8.1 Deactivate Installation Mode

You must deactivate the CP installation mode before the CP can begin normal operation mode.

To deactivate the installation mode:

1. Locate the TEST pinhole on the back of the CP, as shown in Figure 5 on page 17.

2. Insert the open end of a paperclip or a probe into the pinhole, as shown in Figure 5 on page 17.

3. Push the paper clip or probe in the TEST pinhole until you feel a click. The CP announces “Installation test ends.”

3.8.2 Close the CP

4. Best Practices

The following are suggestions to ensure the effective installation of the peripheral devices:

For all peripherals installed using double-sided adhesive mounting-tape, first clean the surface from dirt, dust, and oily materials to ensure that the adhesive adheres well to the surface.

PIRs and IPDs should be installed on a flat wall surface, or in a corner of a room.

PIRs and IPDs should be installed with the spherical lens facing downwards.

4.1. Positioning per Location

For the best results, follow Essence guidelines when choosing a position to install each of the peripheral devices in their assigned locations:

Bedroom PIR:

Height: 1.5-2 m (4 ft. 11 in. - 6 ft. 7 in.)

Direction: diagonal to the bed and not in front of the door

Restroom PIR:

Height: 30-50 cm (12 in. – 1 ft. 8 in.) above the toilet seat, depending on the distance from the seat

Direction: diagonal to the seat and not facing the door

If it is not possible to avoid the doorway, position the device in front of the seat

Bathroom PIR:

Height: 1.5-2 m (4 ft. 11 in. - 6 ft. 7 in.)

Direction: diagonal to the sink and the bath and not facing the door

Dining room PIR:

Height: 1.5-2 m (4 ft. 11 in. - 6 ft. 7 in.)

Direction: diagonal to the dining table and not facing the living room, specifically for a dining room and living room without a separating wall

Living room PIR:

Height: 1.5-2 m (4 ft. 11 in. - 6 ft. 7 in.)

Direction: diagonal to the sitting area and not facing the dining room, specifically for a dining room and living room without a separating wall

Door MGLS (for either the refrigerator or front doors):

Position the magnet:

o Next to the detector so that the line marks on both the magnet and the detector are aligned

o No further than 3 cm (1 in.) from the detector

4.2. Special Cases

The following cases describe situations that are exceptions to the standard living arrangements. Installation solutions are suggested for each of these non-standard situations.

4.2.1 Living Room vs Bedroom

A resident may choose to sleep in the living room. In this case, either:

The living room has been converted to a bedroom:

If the living room has been converted to a bedroom or the resident is using the couch or other living room furniture exclusively for sleeping purposes, contact the monitoring station to request to re-classify the PIR, identified by its serial number, for living room activity to a PIR for bedroom activity.

In the activity sensors module of the Care@Home™ CMS application, update the Activity Type of the PIR to bedroom, according to the PIR serial number.

The resident is sleeping in a bed in the living room which includes a separate seating area:

Install the two PIRs such that their coverage areas do not overlap.

The PIR, whose coverage area includes the bed or sleeping area, should be assigned an activity type of bedroom, according to the PIR serial number.

The PIR, whose coverage area does not include the bed or sleeping area, should be assigned an activity type of living room, according to the PIR serial number.

4.2.2 Combined Bathroom

A special case for installation is when a bathroom includes a toilet. This is called a combined bathroom or a correlated restroom.

For this special case, you must install both the bathroom PIR and the toilet PIR in the same room. You need to be careful to isolate the toilet activities from the bathroom activities. Activity within a small space does not easily allow the PIRs to be installed affectively without overlap.

Detection overlap can cause possible fall events not to be reported. There is a timer in the PIR that is triggered when the PIR senses movement. The timer monitors the time until the next movement. If movement is not detected within a pre-determined time frame, the Care@Home™ Pro system assumes the resident has fallen and issues a possible fall alert.

When there is detection overlap, the PIR timer is constantly reset. This makes it next to impossible to identify a possible fall event.

The combined bathroom arrangement requires installation of special equipment to help focus the movement detections. Install an optical limiter in each of the combined bathroom PIRs to reduce the coverage area of each PIR. The reduced coverage area allows you to place the PIRs such that their coverage areas do not overlap.

4.2.3 Pets on the Premises

If the resident has a pet, it is important to block the movement sensors from registering the pet’s movement. Do this by installing a pet immune lens in the PIR and IPD devices.

6. Troubleshooting

Table 2 describes installation error situations and their recommended solutions.

A peripheral is not recognized by the CP

The peripheral is located too close to the CP when its batteries are inserted.

There should be at least a 2 m (6 ft. 7 in.) distance from the CP and any of its peripherals.

1. Remove the batteries from the peripheral.

2. Shake the peripheral gently to remove the residual power. You should hear a rattling sound. That is the tamper switch. The rattling sound is normal.

3. Position the peripheral no less than 2 m (6 ft. 7 in.) from the CP.

4. Insert the batteries into the peripheral. The CP should recognize the peripheral.

The CP announces the wrong location assignment for a peripheral, after batteries are inserted into the peripheral.

The location label on the peripheral does not match the location on the kit label. Installer error.

The location labels are provided to manually label the peripherals in the field, according to the list on the kit label

Relabel the peripheral according to the list on the kit label.

The kit label list is incorrect. Production process error.

The kit label is produced during the production process.

Reassign the peripheral to the location announced by the CP installation mode.

The peripheral serial number is defined in the CMS for a different location (activity type). Pairing process error.

The peripheral activity type, entered in the activity sensors module of the Care@Home™ CMS application, determines the location of the peripheral.
