General Information

The Caremix® E3 exposed & C3 concealed, are both TMV3 approved thermostatic sequential control showers. A sequential control is one where the on/off and temperature control is achieved by turning the same control knob: the first movement turns the shower on to the cold position and any subsequent movement counter clockwise increases the temperature to a set maximum.

The Caremix® E3 & C3 are built around a single cartridge principle meaning that all of the working components are included in an easy to replace one piece cartridge. Each shower includes; check valves, strainers and an integral flow regulator.

This installation and maintenance manual has been prepared to provide as much information as possible to aid the plumber in the initial installation and to provide details of ongoing maintenance requirements and spare parts for the facilities manager.

In-Service Testing

The purpose of performance checks is to regularly monitor and record the performance of the thermostatic shower. Deterioration in performance can indicate the need for service work on the valve and/or the water supplies. Using the same measuring equipment, or equipment to the same specification as used in the commissioning of the valve, carry out the following sequence:

• Record the temperature of the hot and cold water supplies

• Record the temperature of the mixed water outlet

• Isolate the cold water supply to the shower, the flow should slow to a slight drip at (Maximum residual flow should be no more than 120ml/min)

• Isolate the hot water supply to the shower, the flow should slow to a slight drip at most

• Record the equipment, thermometer etc. used for the measurements

If there is no significant change to the set outlet temperature (2°C or less change from the original settings) and the fail-safe shut off is functioning, then the valve is working correctly and no further service work is required.

Please note: If there is a residual flow on cold shut off, then this is acceptable providing the temperature of the seeping water is no more than 2°C above the designated maximum water outlet temperature setting of the shower or if the total flow is no more than 120ml.

General Installation Guidance

This installation guide is provided to give instruction on the installation practices that should be observed to ensure the correct functioning of the Reliance Caremix® E3 exposed & C3 concealed sequential control showers. Failure to comply with these instructions will result in the warranty becoming null and void.

In all cases before installing the shower it is imperative to ensure that the system conditions i.e. pressures, temperatures and flow rates are within the limits stated in the specifications section.

Prior to installing the shower please ensure that the pipe work is flushed out and is free from any system debris, i.e. sealant, PTFE tape, flux, solder or any other material that could become trapped in the strainers or check valves. Failure to do this may result in very poor flow performance and/or damage to the shower. As thermostatic showers contain temperature sensitive components soldering on or near the shower must be avoided.

Caremix® C3Remove the indice on the end of the handle to access the securing screw, using a 4mm Allen key remove the screw and in turn remove the handle.Remove the two securing screws which hold the cover plate in position, then slide the cover plate off the body of the shower.

Isolate both the hot and cold water supplies.

Unscrew the ¾" nut on the flat faced union connection.

Both the check valve and strainer can now be accessed.

The washer/strainer is situated within the union connection and can be removed so that it can be washed under clean running water, to remove any debris. The check valve is situated in the shower body and can be removed cleaned/replaced by removing the complete shower body.

To access the check valve, use a 2.5mm Allen key to remove the grub screw situated behind the elbow, this will allow the elbow to slide away from the shower body.

You will then be able to remove and clean/replace the check valve which is situated in the shower body connection.

To access the strainer take the elbow and use a 8mm Allen key to remove the internal bush which includes the strainer. This can then be washed under clean running water, to remove any debris.

Installing the Shower (through wall)

Isolation valve should be fitted on the supply lines. Install the pipe work in the void or chase to the 150mm centres.

Secure the pipes so they do not push back into the void or chase when the shower is fitted.

Finish the internal wall leaving 40mm of 15mm pipe exposed as a minimum.

Mark the pipes at a minimum of 20mm from the tile and using a suitable tool (pipe cutter), cut away the excess pipe.

Using the Allen key supplied remove the two grub screws positioned at the bottom of the shower control, and remove the back plate.

Using the back plate as a template, mark the position of the holes onto the wall central to the protruding pipes. Drill two holes in the marked positions, insert a rawl plug, and position and screw the back plate to the wall until secure.

Maintenance & Performance Checks

Routine Maintenance

To comply with the current NHS guidelines thermostatic showers should be tested against the original performance results 6-8 weeks after installation. If the temperatures have remained to within +/- 2°C and the hot and cold water supply isolation tests are operating correctly, then a six monthly cycle of performance testing can be implemented.

Accessing the check valve and strainer:

Replacing the Thermostatic Cartridge

With the shower in the off position, use a suitable jewellers type screwdriver or similar, carefully remove the indices from the centre of the shower control to gain access to the Allen screw that holds the handle onto the thermostatic cartridge.

Using an Allen key, remove the retaining screw.

Remove the handle, this will expose the top of the thermostatic cartridge.

Using a spanner, unscrew the cartridge.

Take your replacement cartridge and insert into the shower housing.

Tighten the cartridge in position.

Loosely fit the handle, re-fit the Allen screw and replace the indice, making sure that the handle is in the desired position when shut off.

The Caremix® E3 is supplied with integral flow regulation, check valves and strainers as part of the design of the shower, so these do not need to be fitted separately.

Loosely fit the olive and back nut on to the elbows of the shower, place the rose over the end and push up to the nut.

Position the shower on to the protruding pipes and back plate. Taking care that hot and cold are fitted in the correct orientation.

Re-insert the two grub screws and use them to secure the shower to the back plate.

Page 9: Caremix E3 & C3 Sequential Shower Control · General Information The Caremix® E3 exposed & C3 concealed, are both TMV3 approved thermostatic sequential control showers. A sequential

Tighten the nuts on either side until the olive has compressed, and the connection has sealed.

You can now connect the rigid riser or flexible shower kit.

The Caremix® E3, is supplied as standard with the connection on the bottom, this connection is designed to accept a nut and olive (supplied) or a ½" shower hose.

Alternatively if you have a rigid riser which requires a top connection you can remove the blanking plug, and the connection using a 10mm Allen key and switch their position.

15 8

Adjusting the Maximum TemperatureThe Caremix® E3 & C3 thermostatic showers are supplied factory set at a maximum of 38°C +/- 2°C, to alter this temperature please adopt the following procedure:

1. With the shower in the off position, use a suitable jewellers type screwdriver or similar, carefully remove the indices from the centre of the shower control to gain access to the Allen screw that holds the handle onto the thermostatic cartridge.

2. Using an Allen key, remove the retaining screw followed by the handle, this will expose the top of the thermostatic cartridge. You should now be able to see two stainless steel cams.

3. One cam (lower) will be up against the brass stop while the other, the maximum temperature cam (upper), will be approximately in mid position.

4. Remove the maximum temperature cam (upper) and loosely re-fit the shower handle.

5. Turn the shower on and check the temperature of the water with a handheld digital thermometer, continue to move the handle until the desired maximum temperature is achieved.

6. Once set, remove the handle without changing the spindle position and re-fit the maximum temperature stop cam tight against the brass stop.

7. Loosely fit the handle and shut off the shower

8. Re-fit the Allen screw and replace the indice, making sure that the handle is in the desired position when shut off.

Note: Changing the maximum set temperature will change the amount of rotation on the handle. Increasing the temperature will mean extra rotation whilst decreasing will result in less rotation.

Commissioning

Since the installed supply conditions are likely to be different from those applied in the laboratory tests it is appropriate, at commissioning, to carry out some simple checks and tests on each shower to provide a performance reference point for future in-service tests.

In all cases the following must be checked to ensure the correct performance of the thermostatic shower:

• The designation of the thermostatic shower matches the intended application.

• The supply pressures and temperatures are within the range of operating pressures and temperatures for the designation of the valve.

It is important to record the testing carried out during the commissioning and also to record the temperature of the hot and cold water supplies and the temperature of the mixed water at the full hot setting.

Once the correct outlet temperature has been achieved, the valves internal mechanism should be exercised at least 3 times by alternately shutting off the hot and cold supplies while the tap is set in the full hot position. This will cause the piston inside the cartridge to travel its full stroke and ensure that it is moving freely so the valve can operate correctly.

Test 1. – With the shower in the full hot position and both hot and cold supplies turned fully on and at system temperatures, isolate the cold supply to the thermostatic shower. The flow should reduce to a drip within a few seconds. Restore the cold supply and check that the set temperature has not altered.

Test 2. – Repeat the test for the hot supply

Record the testing done during the commissioning and also record the temperature of the hot and cold water supplies and the temperature of the mixed water at the full hot setting.

Installing the Caremix® C3

The Caremix® C3 is a concealed sequentially controlled TMV3 approved control shower. It is supplied with integral isolators check valves, strainers and flow regulator.

To begin select a suitable location for the Caremix® C3 control shower to be fitted. Position the shower in the wall and ensure that the plastic shroud will be flush to the finished wall service, therefore if you are tiling the service ensure you leave room for this so the plastic shroud is at the same level as the finished tiled service.

Secure the shower in its backing box into the void or chase using the holes in the backing box, to position the fixing screws.

Remove the plastic shroud from the shower and flush the pipe work through thoroughly.

13 10

Examples of the Caremix® C3 installed with a flexible hose and handset which has a bottom connection, or alternatively if you have a fixed head which requires a top connection you can remove the blanking plug, and the connection using a 10mm Allen key and switch their position.

Connect the pipe work to the inlets of the shower and also the outlet, the orientation of these connections can be changed to suit various applications:

The inlet elbows can be position for either top or bottom connections.

The outlet connection can also be changed from top to bottom if required.

Replace the plastic shroud.

Finish the wall, plaster, tile and grout, ensuring you are as close to the template as possible. Remove plastic shroud.

Open the isolating valves on both the hot and cold supply elbows.

Fit the cover plate on the shower control. Fix with the two screws provided. The cover plate includes a seal between it and the wall so silicone around the plate is not required.

Position handle and secure with the Allen screw provided.

Finally insert the indice to cover the screw.
