Barnet Carers Centre is delighted that wehave been selected to continue to deliverCarer and Young Carer support servicesfor the next three years. This means thatwe will be continuing to provide acomprehensive service supporting Carers,Young Carers and their families in Barnet.

In partnership with Barnet Barnet Council's Adults &Communities team, Barnet Carers Centre issupporting the delivery of rights and support allCarers are entitled to under the 2014 Care Act.

To support this, over the coming months Carer andYoung Carer support services will be changing.These changes will help us to provide a wider rangeof support options and improve service access bybringing services to more community locationsacross the borough.

Where are we?

We will continue to operate many services from ourbase in North Finchley. Services will continue to beavailable through our longstanding communitypartners including: Barnet Mencap (FinchleyCentral), Age UK Barnet (Anne Owens and MeritageCentre) and Friend in Need (East Barnet). We arealso now working from the Independent Living Centrein Colindale twice a month on the following dates:

We will also be present at GP surgeries, communityevents, schools, libraries and community centres ona regular basis. Please check our new eventscalendar at www.barnetcarers.org for upcomingoutreach events.

What do we do?

Our Carer Support Officers can assist all carers toidentify support options available to help with careresponsibilities, plan for the future and accessspecialist support services to help maintain anindependent life alongside caring.

Carer and Young Carer Support Services are changing…These services include:

Emergency Card Scheme: 24 hour access toalternative carer details should a carer suddenly beunable to continue their role.

Training: Specialist training to support caringresponsibilities.

Social: meet new people, learn a new skill orpractice an old one. We run several groups toexpress your creative side including Stitch & Sew,Creative Writing and Arts & Crafts.

For Adults:

Our dedicated Adult Carer Support and OutreachOfficers work with carers for as long as is needed tohelp to manage their caring role. We provide a flexibleservice, designed around the needs of both the carerand those they care for. This can include:

One to One meetings: a time to discuss anyconcerns that may exist for the carer and theirfamily.

Statutory Carers Needs Assessments: The bestway to identify and obtain support for carers.

Introductions to other services in the area that canprovide support.

Carer Discount Scheme and Leisure Pass: accessto a range of discounted services only available toCarers in Barnet.

Grants and subsidies: Help with the cost of caringor funding to take some respite time. Some fundsare only available to carers registered with BarnetCarers Centre.

Young Adult Carers:

Carers age 16 - 25 face specific challenges inmaintaining their education and managing their caringrole at a time when their lives are changing rapidly.

Our dedicated Changes project provides tailoredsupport including:

Carers advice and support to identify suitableopportunities to progress your education andemployment prospects.

Access to work experience and volunteeringopportunities with a wide range of organisations.

Referral to specialist services providing intensivesupport for young people who are struggling toengage with education beyond GCSEs.

For Young Carers:

Young Carer services operate across the borough atcommunity locations and in several schools.

Our specialist Young Carer team will work with youngcarers, their parents and siblings to ensure thatyoung carers have the support needed to managetheir caring roles and to continue to engage atschool.

We can hold meetings at the Centre, at school and athome, ensuring that the whole family are involved indeveloping the support plan.

Additional services include:

Specialist support for Primary Young Carers.

Regular events and workshops to try new activitiesand meet other young people caring for theirparents or siblings.

Specialist partners delivering interactiveworkshops on healthy living, getting active andmanaging caring roles.

Ever thought of giving some of your time to helpothers in the community? If you can spare a fewhours a day or two a week, you can have fun whilstmaking a positive difference to your local community

We have vacancies for the following volunteeringroles:

Trustee Volunteers

Being a member of our Board of Trustees meansyou can help influence and shape the future directionof the Charity. We are looking for professionals withexpertise in finance, business administration, law,fundraising, grant applications, IT or home care. As atrustee you will be expected to commit to 4-5 hoursper month including attending six meetings per year.

Tutors Volunteer

Help and inspire young Carers in their school work.We are looking for qualified teachers, teachingassistants, university students and sixth formstudents.

Complimentary Therapist Volunteer

Are you a qualified complementary therapist who canhelp with any of the following: AromatherapyMassage, Reflexology, Reiki Healing or SpiritualHealing?

Fundraising Volunteers

It’s not just about shaking a tin or running a stall. Youcan also help with Barnet Carers Centre’s fundraisingactivities in other ways. You may just want to helpwith specific events. If you are able to make a regularcommitment, you might like to become a member ofour Fundraising Team.

Outreach Support Volunteer

Become Carers Champions promoting Carers Rightsand Barnet Carers Centre. Going out in theCommunity to raise awareness and assist inidentifying carers in order to give them support intheir everyday lives.

Ongoing support and training will be provided for allour volunteers.

The Centre willbe working with local businesses to help identify andsupport more informal carers in our local community.Some local businesses will also be supporting carersby offering discounts for their services on productionof a Carers’ Discount card.

How to get your discount card

The carers discount card is available to carersregistered with Barnet Carers Centre. Please notethat if you work in a care home or domiciliaryservices you will not be eligible for a carers discountcard unless you are also an unpaid carer.

If you are already registered with the Centre, please

complete an application form which is available onour website www.barnetcarers.org or from the Centreand return with a passport sized photo and stampedaddressed envelope.

If you have not yet registered with the Centre, pleasecall 020 8343 9698 and we will arrange anappointment to register you for our services. Onceyou have registered, you will be eligible for a carersdiscount card.

We will issue your card within 14 days.

Evening Art Class: this popularclass continues to take place on thesecond and fourth Monday of themonth from 6:30pm-8.30pm at theCentre.

Creative Wellness with Writing: do you like writingand language? Do you like reading or listening? Doyou want to reach out with written words rather thanspeech? Do you need to be heard?

If yes is your answer to some or all of thesequestions, then why not sign up for our new‘Creative Wellness with Writing’group which focuses oncreative writing, poetry and thepower of prose. Writing is agreat way to aid depression,anxiety and reduce stress.You’ll be able to explore andchannel your thoughts andfeelings, capture your dreams and share yourexperiences in a safe environment. You will have achance to read your work to the group, as well aslisten and appreciate others’ work. So why not enrolnow and meet new friends, have fun and get writing!

This activity takes place on Wednesday eveningsfrom 6:30pm-8:30pm. Please contact the AdultCarers Team for more information and bookings.

Grants & Funding: As a Network Partner of CarersTrust, the Centre is able to apply for small amountsof funding for household equipment, carers breaks,driving lessons and training and tuition costs. Thesegrants are only for informal carers who are aged 16or over and are registered with Barnet CarersCentre. Deadlines are set by Carers Trustthroughout the year. Limited number of applicationscan be submitted. If you wish to be considered forany of these grants, please contact the Adult CarersTeam on 020 8343 9698 or [email protected]

Stitch and Sew therapy: There are spacesavailable at the new Stitch and Sew evening classwhich takes place at the Centreon Tuesday evenings from 6.00pm- 8.00pm. The course is offered toparent carers and is free withmaterials provided, and is run byan experienced facilitator who isalso a Parent Carer. Please bookyour place with the Adult CarersTeam on 020 8343 9698 or [email protected]

Wellbeing Workshops: Carers have been enjoyingwellbeing workshops at the Meritage Centre inHendon, delivered by NHS Barnet in partnershipwith the Chinese Mental Health Association(CMHA).

The workshops have included individual “WellbeingMOTs”, relaxing Tai Chi sessions, workshopsessions covering areas such as Low Mood andStress Management, and Mindfulness exercises.

The free events have included time for Q and A’sand refreshments, and for those with difficulties ingetting to the Meritage Centre, the possibility ofusing a Community Transport Service run throughthe CMHA.

Dementia Surgery: Through this service Carerscan access a 50 minute private and confidentialconsultation with a Dementia Advisor from theAlzheimer’s Society. Held at Barnet Carers Centreon the second Friday of every month. If you haveconcerns about a relative with Dementia or wouldlike to receive information and advice on servicesand support available, please book your placethrough the Adult Carers Team on 020 8343 9698 oremail [email protected]

Legal Advice: Free legal advice is provided tofamily carers at Barnet Carers Centre once a monthon a Thursday. The Solicitoris able to advise on a widerange of matters, includingwills, estate administration,inheritance tax, care homeissues, later life planning,court of protection, powersof attorney, although she isflexible to give advice on some other issues too. Ifyou need advice on any of the above please bookyour free 15 minute slot through the Adult CarersTeam on 020 8343 9698 or [email protected]

Form Filling: We offer weekly sessions of welfarebenefits application form-fillingsupport for certain benefitsincluding carers allowance,attendance allowance, disabilityliving allowance, employmentsupport allowance, blue badge,emergency card and taxi card.Carers can have up to two hours support with ourform filling volunteer. Bookings need to be madethrough the Adult Carers Team on 020 8343 9698 oremail [email protected]

It’s all GO for theNew YACsProjectChanges, our project for YoungAdult Carers (YACs) in Barnetofficially launched in June 2016during Carers Week. We were pleased to be invited byBarnet and Southgate College to hold a stand at theirWood Street Campus to help raise awareness ofYACs. The project is now in full swing!

Up, Up and Away! – A trip tothe Emirates Cable Cars atthe O2On Wednesday 10thAugust 2016, the YACsenjoyed a trip to theEmirates Airline CableCars in Docklands, EastLondon. After the excitingtrip over the River Thames, we explored the O2 andcame across the Nissan Innovation Experience. HereYACs were able to participate in several activitiestesting their physical abilities… and not to mention getto take pictures in some really cool cars! We endedthe trip with a buffet lunch at Jimmy’s World Grill & Barwhich was fantastic. The young people really enjoyedit, with a few of them expressing they’d never been toGreenwich and would not have been able to do thishad it not been for Changes.

Partnership WorkingThe Arts Award – WithCommunity Focus

Changes will be workingwith Community Focus onour Arts Award Project. TheArts Award is a range ofunique qualifications thatsupports anyone aged up to25 to grow as artists andarts leaders, inspiring them to connect with andtake part in the wider arts world through takingchallenges in an art form - from fashion to digitalart, pottery to poetry!

We will be working with Community Focus todeliver the Art Awards to the YACs on theChanges Project. We will be sharing updates ofthe Awards in upcoming issues.

Mental Health Support &Enablement Group – withAdult Services, MentalHealth ServicesMany YACs either care forsomeone with a mentalhealth problem or havedeveloped a mental illnessas a result of their caringrole. We’ve put together anew service to supportYACs affected by mental illhealth. To deliver this, wewill be mainly working with the Adult Social CareMental Health Enablement Service at BarnetCouncil to create a place where YACs can cometogether to talk about their circumstances, find thetools to take better care of their own mentalhealth and learn more about the support peoplewith mental health issues can receive.

Barnet Young Carers and Siblings

New Young Carers’ HubsWe are delighted to say that we have securedfunding from The Mercers’ Trust to run two new Hubsper month until March 2017.

The new Young Carers Hubs will be offering a funprogramme of:

health and wellbeing sessions, including sessionslinked to nutrition, exercise and activity inpartnership with Don’t Tone Alone

drama, play-writing and stop-motion film-makingsessions with Jen from Rainbow Head

as well as other sessions with our lovely PlayLeaders and Play Workers including arts andcrafts, basic cooking, group games, 1-2-1 chats

with a member of staff (as well as with the otheryoung carers/friends, of course) and groupdiscussions

The Hubs will be:

split into different age groups (one Hub date eachmonth for those aged 5-11, and another for 12-17year olds) as has been requested by many youngcarers

free of cost to the young carer and their family,and including free refreshments

in addition, free trips and outings will also beoffered throughout the period

OutstandingStaff AwardKaren Scott has been a PersonalCare Assistant and supervisorsince 2002 and so is a longstanding and much valuedmember of staff. We would like tocongratulate Karen for recently passing her QCFLevel 3 in Health & Social Care. Karen worked veryhard to get this qualification whilst providing supportfor her clients. Karen is reliable and very supportivewhich makes her very popular with clients she visits.In the 14 years of service, Karen has rarely if evertaken a day off and we are extremely lucky to haveher as part of our team.

New Member of the TeamWe would like to welcome Isabelle King who is thenew Community & Home Support Service HR &Recruitment Officer and will be responsible for theon-going recruitment of Personal Care Assistants.

Isabelle has brought with her great ideas andenthusiasm for the role and we hope she will enjoyworking as part of our team.

Our ServicesWe provide personal care, companionship and allother home and social support. We also have somevery experienced and caring Personal CareAssistants available to provide the overnight service.Our clients who use this service have found itinvaluable if they have loved ones who are unsettledduring the night, as sleep deprivation or brokensleep can effect well-being and being able tofunction on a day-to-day basis.

We provide sleeping nights where the Personal CareAssistant would be expected to get up and see tothe client up to three times in the night and wakingnights where the Personal Care Assistant will stayup all night and see to the client’s needs enablingCarer to sleep through without having to worry.

Barnet Carers Centreoffered a number ofactivities for carers duringthe national Carers Weekin June this year, much ofwhich was kindly supportedfinancially by the Carers

Forum as part of its support for local carers.

The “Supporting Barnet Carers” event started the week.Alongside the chance to talk to fellow carers overrefreshments and lunch, carers heard talks on the firstyear of the Care Act from Laura Bennett, the Policy andPublic Affairs Manager at Carers Trust, on mental healthsupport in Barnet from MIND in Barnet and the Barnet,Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust, and on BarnetCouncil’s Support for Carers from Sarah Perrin, thePrevention and Wellbeing Service Manager for Adultsand Communities.

Barnet Carers Centre’s outing this year was to thebeautiful Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.

“I enjoyed it very much and had a lovely day ... achance to meet other people and learn about Britishhistory. It meant a lot to me.”

“Such a wonderful day. Just what the doctor ordered!”

We also put on a Health and Wellbeing Day during theweek, with therapeutic activities, talks, manicures andhealth checks, plus a healthy lunch.
