Asphyxia
Asphyxia is the author of the magical new series, The
Grimstones. She is an experienced motivational speaker and
loves to inspire people to be more creative and open-
minded. She handcrafted her Grimstone family of puppets
and their world from upcycled junk, and has since toured the
world with the acclaimed, award winning theatre show, The
Grimstones. Now Asphyxia is ready to inspire students to
create their own miniature worlds from ordinary household
rubbish.
Asphyxia will be speaking about her work at the staff launch on Tuesday 20 May.

Myke Bartlett
Myke Bartlett is a journalist and critic whose debut
novel, Fire in the Sea, won the 2011 Text Prize. When not
writing fiction, Myke writes on politics, movies, pop culture
and rock music. His work has been published in The
Age, Dumbo Feather, Overland, Triple J Magazine,
Metro, Cream Magazine and The Big Issue, among others.

Amanda J. Betts
Amanda (AJ) Betts is an award-winning author,
teacher and cyclist, living in Perth. Her novel ‘Zac and
Mia’ won the 2012 Text Prize for best unpublished

Mark Carthew
Mark Carthew is an award winning editor and
children’s author well known for his many books
and series exploring wordplay, music, movement,
drama, jokes, rhymes and riddles! Mark’s recent

Justin D’Ath
Justin D’Ath is the author of over 40 books for children and
young adults, including the hugely popular Extreme
Adventures and Mission Fox series. Other books include
Astrid Spark, Fixologist, The Skyflower, Robbie and the
Dolphins, Infamous, and Why did the Chykkan cross the
Galaxy?
Justin's contemporary fantasy novel, Pool, was shortlisted in
the 2008 Victorian Premier's Awards and was a CBC
Notable Book in 2008. His hard-hitting YA novel, Hunters and Warriors was a CBC
Notable Book in 2002 and was Commended in the 2002 Victorian Premier’s Awards.
His hugely popular fantasy novel, Shaedow Master was a CBC Notable Book for
Older Readers in 2004, and Crocodile Attack and Scorpion Sting were CBC Notable
Books for Younger Readers in 2006 and 2007.

Robin de Crespigny
Robin de Crespigny is a Sydney film-maker, producer,
director, writer and a former directing Lecturer at the
Australian Film, Television & Radio School. Her book ‘The
People Smuggler’ tells one man’s epic struggle of trying to
find a safe place in the world.
Robin de Crespigny is the keynote speaker for the Year 12
students and the community event on the 19th May at 7pm in
the De Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

Sue deGennaro
Sue deGennaro is an author and an illustrator.
She has illustrated seven picture books, and is the
author and illustrator of The Pros and Cons of
Being A Frog (shortlist for the CBCA 2013 Early
Childhood Prize). Her most recent illustrated book
is Max & George by Cori Brooke (Penguin, 2013).
Sue’s illustrations are quirky and infectiously
funny. Sue has worked in many careers (including
confectionery, circuses and home renovations!),
and now (between making books) she often
teachers writing & illustration.

Lee Fox
Lee Fox writes hilarious stories in rollicking rhyme about the
things children do not like doing. She cleverly disguises literacy
concepts in her stories so that young readers don’t even know
they are learning.

Scot Gardner
Scot Gardner came to writing via counselling and youth
work. His thirteen novels range from absurd fantasy for
children to gritty realism and tragic-comedy for young
adults. His most recent YA book ‘The Dead I Know’ won
the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year in 2012.

Leanne Hall
Leanne Hall began her writing career with short stories, some
of which have been published in Sleepers
Almanac, Meanjin and Best Australian Stories. She has
resolutely resisted a sensible career trajectory, and has
worked in the arts and educational publishing, in between
long rambling jaunts overseas. In 2009 she won The Text
Prize with her novel This Is Shyness, which was followed up
in 2012 by Queen of the Night.

Nicole Hayes
Nicole Hayes is a writer, editor, teacher, talker… she
lives in Melbourne with her two daughters and a very

George Ivanoff
George Ivanoff is the author of the Gamers series of teen
novels, set inside a computer game world, as well as
many other works for young people. His books appear on

Melissa Keil
Melissa Keil is a children’s book editor, who spends most
of the rest of her time reading, writing, and watching
YouTube. Life in Outer Space is her debut YA novel,
published by Hardie Grant Egmont. It’s a young adult
romantic comedy that combines some of her many loves –
movies, music, karate, the Astor Theatre, Star Wars, and
all things geek. She is currently working on her second
novel.

Steven Lochran
Steven Lochran is the author of the Vanguard Prime
series, published by Penguin and described as “Alex
Rider joins the X-Men”. He majored in Creative Writing
at QUT and has worked as a film critic, a projectionist
and as a mobile party DJ. Most recently, he’s worked
in the publishing industry as a marketing assistant and
a sales rep, giving him a good overview of both the art
and commerce of writing.

Myron Lysenko
Myron Lysenko is an Australian performance poet. He has
been writing, performing, publishing, editing and conducting
poetry workshops since 1980.
He began writing free-form narrative poems about his
experiences of growing up in Australia, including coming to
terms with his Ukrainian name and background.
He has published approximately two and three quarter books,
or 4: depending on how you look at it.

Ellie Marney
Ellie Marney is a teacher and Young Adult author who
specializes in crime and all things involving dastardly
mystery. Her highly-awarded adult short stories have
been published in Australia and the UK, and her debut YA
crime thriller Every Breath (Allen & Unwin, 2013) is set to
be followed by two sequels. She likes jumping in the dam
on a hot night, all things Sherlock, and the occasional
spot of remedial chain-sawing.

Mandy Ord
Mandy Ord is a Melbourne-based comic artist. Her
work has appeared in The Age, Meanjin, The Australian
Rationalist magazine, Voiceworks, Tango, Going Down
Swinging and Red Leaves. Since 2009 Ord has also
had a regular comic strip published in Trouble
(magazine). In 2004, she was nominated for the Ledger
Award for Small Press Title of the Year for her
comic Dirty Little Creep
Ord's earliest published work was in her own book Wilnot in 1994. Her first graphic
novel was a collaboration with Amber Carvan, Brick Dog and Other
Stories 2002, followed by her first solo graphic novel Rooftops 2007, published by
Findlay Lloyd. Ord is also the author of minicomics Ordinary
Eyeball (2006) and Sensitive Creatures (2004).

Michael Panckridge has written over thirty five books, many with

Tim Pegler
Acclaimed YA author Tim Pegler is an award-winning
journalist, extensively published in newspapers, magazines
and online. Tim’s experience covering social issues, such
as homelessness, disability and juvenile justice, provides
the foundation for much of his writing for young adults. His
two books for young adults include Game as Ned and Five
Parts Dead.

James Phelan is the author of 21 novels, including thrillers,

Penny Tangey
Penny is the author of three books for young people. Her first
novel,Loving Richard Feynman was shortlisted for the 2010
CBCA Book of the Year (older readers).
Penny performed stand-up comedy for many years
beginning by winning the Victorian final of Triple J’s Raw
Comedy Competition. Most recently she performed a show
about education and teaching, Chalk and Talk, in the
Melbourne Comedy Festival.
