Asphyxia

Asphyxia is the author of the magical new series, The

Grimstones. She is an experienced motivational speaker and

loves to inspire people to be more creative and open-

minded. She handcrafted her Grimstone family of puppets

and their world from upcycled junk, and has since toured the

world with the acclaimed, award winning theatre show, The

Grimstones. Now Asphyxia is ready to inspire students to

create their own miniature worlds from ordinary household

rubbish.

Asphyxia will be speaking about her work at the staff launch on Tuesday 20 May.

Emilie Zoey Baker

Emilie Zoey Baker is an international poetry slam

champion who will excite and delight all ages

about poetry written for both page and stage.

Myke Bartlett

Myke Bartlett is a journalist and critic whose debut

novel, Fire in the Sea, won the 2011 Text Prize. When not

writing fiction, Myke writes on politics, movies, pop culture

and rock music. His work has been published in The

Age, Dumbo Feather, Overland, Triple J Magazine,

Metro, Cream Magazine and The Big Issue, among others.

Amanda J. Betts

Amanda (AJ) Betts is an award-winning author,

teacher and cyclist, living in Perth. Her novel ‘Zac and

Mia’ won the 2012 Text Prize for best unpublished

manuscript.

Wednesday 21st May and will also be running writing

Bernard Caleo

Bernard Caleo is a performer, comic book maker, and comic

book communicator.

Bernard Caleo is the Year 12 Breakfast Speaker and will

also run Year 8 writing workshops.

Mark Carthew

Mark Carthew is an award winning editor and

children’s author well known for his many books

and series exploring wordplay, music, movement,

drama, jokes, rhymes and riddles! Mark’s recent

picture book The Gobbling Tree was a winner of the

Speech Pathology Australia’s Book of the Year.

Justin D’Ath

Justin D’Ath is the author of over 40 books for children and

young adults, including the hugely popular Extreme

Adventures and Mission Fox series. Other books include

Astrid Spark, Fixologist, The Skyflower, Robbie and the

Dolphins, Infamous, and Why did the Chykkan cross the

Galaxy?

Justin's contemporary fantasy novel, Pool, was shortlisted in

the 2008 Victorian Premier's Awards and was a CBC

Notable Book in 2008. His hard-hitting YA novel, Hunters and Warriors was a CBC

Notable Book in 2002 and was Commended in the 2002 Victorian Premier’s Awards.

His hugely popular fantasy novel, Shaedow Master was a CBC Notable Book for

Older Readers in 2004, and Crocodile Attack and Scorpion Sting were CBC Notable

Books for Younger Readers in 2006 and 2007.

Robin de Crespigny

Robin de Crespigny is a Sydney film-maker, producer,

director, writer and a former directing Lecturer at the

Australian Film, Television & Radio School. Her book ‘The

People Smuggler’ tells one man’s epic struggle of trying to

find a safe place in the world.

Robin de Crespigny is the keynote speaker for the Year 12

students and the community event on the 19th May at 7pm in

the De Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

Sue deGennaro

Sue deGennaro is an author and an illustrator.

She has illustrated seven picture books, and is the

author and illustrator of The Pros and Cons of

Being A Frog (shortlist for the CBCA 2013 Early

Childhood Prize). Her most recent illustrated book

is Max & George by Cori Brooke (Penguin, 2013).

Sue’s illustrations are quirky and infectiously

funny. Sue has worked in many careers (including

confectionery, circuses and home renovations!),

and now (between making books) she often

teachers writing & illustration.

Lee Fox

Lee Fox writes hilarious stories in rollicking rhyme about the

things children do not like doing. She cleverly disguises literacy

concepts in her stories so that young readers don’t even know

they are learning.

Scot Gardner

Scot Gardner came to writing via counselling and youth

work. His thirteen novels range from absurd fantasy for

children to gritty realism and tragic-comedy for young

adults. His most recent YA book ‘The Dead I Know’ won

the Children’s Book Council Book of the Year in 2012.

Scot Gardner will run writing workshops for Year 7 and 9 students.

Mini Goss

Mini Goss is a Melbourne-based award winning

author and illustrator, with more than 30 books to her

name. Mini’s life-like, detailed illustrations draw

readers into a world of imagination and humour that

appeal to children and parent alike. She has won over

fans in Australia and overseas with her quirky,

realistic style.

Leanne Hall

Leanne Hall began her writing career with short stories, some

of which have been published in Sleepers

Almanac, Meanjin and Best Australian Stories. She has

resolutely resisted a sensible career trajectory, and has

worked in the arts and educational publishing, in between

long rambling jaunts overseas. In 2009 she won The Text

Prize with her novel This Is Shyness, which was followed up

in 2012 by Queen of the Night.

Leanne Hall will be running a writing workshop with Year 8

Nicole Hayes

Nicole Hayes is a writer, editor, teacher, talker… she

lives in Melbourne with her two daughters and a very

tall American man. And a dog called Brody.

George Ivanoff

George Ivanoff is the author of the Gamers series of teen

novels, set inside a computer game world, as well as

many other works for young people. His books appear on

both the Vic and NSW Premiers' Reading Challenge

booklists. He enjoys speaking to all age levels from

primary school through to adult.

Melissa Keil

Melissa Keil is a children’s book editor, who spends most

of the rest of her time reading, writing, and watching

YouTube. Life in Outer Space is her debut YA novel,

published by Hardie Grant Egmont. It’s a young adult

romantic comedy that combines some of her many loves –

movies, music, karate, the Astor Theatre, Star Wars, and

all things geek. She is currently working on her second

novel.

Melissa Keil will be talking to the Year 8 cohort and

running a writing workshop for Year 8 students.

Steven Lochran

Steven Lochran is the author of the Vanguard Prime

series, published by Penguin and described as “Alex

Rider joins the X-Men”. He majored in Creative Writing

at QUT and has worked as a film critic, a projectionist

and as a mobile party DJ. Most recently, he’s worked

in the publishing industry as a marketing assistant and

a sales rep, giving him a good overview of both the art

and commerce of writing.

Steve Lochran is the Year 7 speaker and will be

running a writing workshop for Year 8 students.

Myron Lysenko

Myron Lysenko is an Australian performance poet. He has

been writing, performing, publishing, editing and conducting

poetry workshops since 1980.

He began writing free-form narrative poems about his

experiences of growing up in Australia, including coming to

terms with his Ukrainian name and background.

He has published approximately two and three quarter books,

or 4: depending on how you look at it.

Myron will run Poetry Writing Workshops for Year 7 and Year 9

Ellie Marney

Ellie Marney is a teacher and Young Adult author who

specializes in crime and all things involving dastardly

mystery. Her highly-awarded adult short stories have

been published in Australia and the UK, and her debut YA

crime thriller Every Breath (Allen & Unwin, 2013) is set to

be followed by two sequels. She likes jumping in the dam

on a hot night, all things Sherlock, and the occasional

spot of remedial chain-sawing.

Ellie Marney is the Year 9 speaker and will be running a

writing workshop for Year 9 students.

Mandy Ord

Mandy Ord is a Melbourne-based comic artist. Her

work has appeared in The Age, Meanjin, The Australian

Rationalist magazine, Voiceworks, Tango, Going Down

Swinging and Red Leaves. Since 2009 Ord has also

had a regular comic strip published in Trouble

(magazine). In 2004, she was nominated for the Ledger

Award for Small Press Title of the Year for her

comic Dirty Little Creep

Ord's earliest published work was in her own book Wilnot in 1994. Her first graphic

novel was a collaboration with Amber Carvan, Brick Dog and Other

Stories 2002, followed by her first solo graphic novel Rooftops 2007, published by

Findlay Lloyd. Ord is also the author of minicomics Ordinary

Eyeball (2006) and Sensitive Creatures (2004).

Michael Panckridge

Michael Panckridge has written over thirty five books, many with

a sporty theme, making them ideal reads for boys and reluctant

readers. They are pacey, readable and hit the spot!

Tim Pegler

Acclaimed YA author Tim Pegler is an award-winning

journalist, extensively published in newspapers, magazines

and online. Tim’s experience covering social issues, such

as homelessness, disability and juvenile justice, provides

the foundation for much of his writing for young adults. His

two books for young adults include Game as Ned and Five

Parts Dead.

Tim Pegler will be running a writing workshop for Year 8

students.

James Phelan

James Phelan is the author of 21 novels, including thrillers,

young adult and middle grade fiction. He is noted for a fast

paced writing style that appeals as much to boys as girls.

James is a highly entertaining and engaging speaker who

has delivered keynotes and presentations all around the

world and divides his time between Melbourne and New

York.

James Phelan will run Writing Workshops with Year 7 and 9

Nick Place

Nick Place is an internationally-published writer of comedy

adventure novels for pre-teen and early teen readers. He is

also a published poet and has credits as a screenwriter, TV

writer and playwright. Away from writing fiction, he is a career

Hannie Rayson

Hannie Rayson is a multi-award winning playwright who has a

reputation for topical complex dramas written with wit and

insight. She is an accomplished public speaker – funny, incisive

and thoughtful.

Penni Russon

Penni Russon is an intelligent literary author for young people

with a Masters in Creative Writing. She has worked as an

online editor and in book publishing, and in teaching creative

writing at university.

Tony Sowersby

Tony is a painter, cartoonist, muralist, portraitist and comic book

author and illustrator. He has been active in Community and

Public arts since the 1980s. Tony has worked extensively in

schools in Victoria, interstate and in PNG.

Penny Tangey

Penny is the author of three books for young people. Her first

novel,Loving Richard Feynman was shortlisted for the 2010

CBCA Book of the Year (older readers).

Penny performed stand-up comedy for many years

beginning by winning the Victorian final of Triple J’s Raw

Comedy Competition. Most recently she performed a show

about education and teaching, Chalk and Talk, in the

Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Michael Wagner

Michael Wagner is one of Australia’s most original and

successful writers for children. His 45+ books successfully

Andrew Weldon

Andrew Weldon is a Melbourne-based cartoonist. His

cartoons have appeared in The Sydney Morning

Herald, The Age, The Australian, The Big

Issue, Tango, The New Yorker, The Spectator, Private

Eye, and on greeting cards. He has written and illustrated

children's books including The Kid with The Amazing Head

(Penguin 1998) and Clever Trevor's Stupendous

Inventions (Penguin 1999). Collections of his gag

cartoons, I'm sorry little man, I thought you were a hand

puppet and If you weren't a hedgehog... If I weren't a
