Carillon Music Academy Welcomes You... We are excited to welcome all Lower Mainland piano, guitar and voice students to the 24 th Annual Carillon Music Festival (CMF)! This is the second half of the CMF, featuring all styles of guitar, voice and classical piano classes as well as duets and ensembles. The Carillon Music Festival was launched in 1994 to provide the young artists of our community with the opportunity to pursue their craft at a broader level. The festival provides participants with an extraordinary venue for performing, learning and sharing their musical experience with an unrivalled panel of adjudicators. This festival is made possible through the time and effort of many teachers, students and donors who understand the importance of quality music instruction. We thank all of you who are supporting this special opportunity for hundreds of Lower Mainland music students. Good luck to everyone! Festival Reminders

1. Students may not play the Festival piano between classes and/or during breaks.

2. Original copies of music must be provided for the adjudicator. Photocopies will not be permitted – students who ignore this rule will not receive a certificate. However, legal downloaded music is acceptable. A student may not share music with someone in the same class. Three marks will be deducted if music is not presented.

3. Music must be memorized to avoid a 3-mark deduction. (Note: if the student plays with the music, a

second original copy of the music should be provided for the adjudicator)

4. Each student must perform the piece (or movement) specified on the entry form. If a different piece (or movement) is played, a mark will not be awarded. Selections may not be changed after the entry deadline.

5. Entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances.

6. Students should arrive 15 minutes prior to their class time. Late entrants will be called again at the end of

the class. Students will not be permitted to perform in any classes other than those to which they are assigned in the program.

7. Repeats may not be played. However, D.C. and D.S. markings should be played in order to maintain the

integrity of the piece.

8. Measure numbers should be marked at the beginning of each line of the music.

9. Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off during Festival classes. Cameras and video equipment will NOT be permitted under any circumstances.

10. Students, teachers and the public may not approach the adjudicator. Adjudicator’s decisions are final and

will not be discussed. Questions may be addressed, in writing, to Colleen Myles (Festival Coordinator).

11. The Festival Committee will determine scholarships/trophies – all decisions made regarding awards are final. See awards list in Festival Syllabus for details regarding eligibility criteria. Award recipients will be contacted within several days after the close of the Festival.

12. Certificates are distributed during the Festival. Scholarships and Trophies will be presented at the

Awards Concert on Saturday, May 13th, 2017.

Carillon Music Academy Welcomes Our Adjudicators DONNA SYMONS Donna Symons received her formal piano training with Mr. Glen Geary in Vancouver and she also studied with Mr. Lee Kum Sing. She received her Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of British Columbia and her

Master’s degree in piano performance from the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, where she also did her Doctoral work and was an Associate Instructor.

Donna has been on the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music and currently is on faculty at the Arts Connection in Richmond as well as maintaining a private studio in North Vancouver where she is an executive

member of the North Shore branch of the BCRMTA. Performances have included recordings for CBC Canada and American PBS in the United States. Her festival

adjudicating has encompassed the mid-west and southern USA and throughout B.C. in Canada. She is a certified Kelly Kirby instructor, a clinician, and an examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music.

CHERYL FINN

Cheryl Finn, ARCT, BA, RMT Cheryl Finn began teaching piano over 30 years ago in Vancouver, BC. and for the past 15 years has been teaching in the White Rock area. She is the founding Director of Semiahmoo Academy of Music. Cheryl teaches all levels of piano and history and prepares students for exams, recitals and festivals and also teaches theory both privately and in classes. Over the years her students have won many awards and scholarships including several Gold Medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music for having obtained the highest piano exam marks of the year in BC. Cheryl is the creator and co-author of Perfection Ear, an ear training series published by The Frederick Harris Music Co. Hal Leonard is the publisher of the Beanstalk's Basics for Piano Theory series of which she is the creator and author, and of the Beanstalk's Basics for Piano Lessons & Technique series that she co-wrote and created. For the past 10 years, Cheryl has been a member of the College of Examiners and an Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music. She has presented several piano workshops throughout Canada and USA and is a frequent festival adjudicator.

BRIAN TAYLOR Mr. Brian Taylor is the Education Manager and head teacher of the Carillon Music Academy. He has over 30 years of teaching experience and has worked with all ages of students as well as genres of music, from classical repertoire to contemporary styles. Mr. Taylor obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University Of Saskatchewan in Piano Performance. Brian also holds diplomas in Jazz Studies and Popular Arranging Techniques. He has studied and worked with notable educators Robin and Marilyn Harrison as well as Merv Mauthe. In Saskatchewan, where Brian’s teaching career began, he was the head teacher of a large music school in Saskatoon. He taught piano and organ as well as managed a staff of over twenty teachers. Before settling in the lower mainland, Brian was the Director of Education at a Toronto area music academy where he also was a prominent community performer and accompanist. Brian has adjudicated extensively across Western Canada and Ontario since 1987. He enjoys conducting workshops for students and teachers, with topics ranging from pedagogy to improvisation. In 1995 he joined the Carillon Music Academy and currently manages 25 teachers. He is also a full time piano instructor with students ranging from the primary levels through ARCT. CHRIS MORGAN Chris is a versatile guitarist with a Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz studies from Vancouver Community College and a diploma in classical studies from Douglas College. While attending VCC, Chris received the prestigious CHQM Scholarship Award for outstanding achievement. He completed the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University in 2012. Now, in addition to his experience as a private music instructor, Chris also enjoys teaching band and general music in the classroom. In addition to his studies, he also has many years of live performance experience in local rock bands. Chris enjoys providing a diverse learning environment, encouraging students to expand and excel with every kind of music. GRANT WUTZKE

Grant Wutzke was born and raised in Surrey, BC, and began his music studies with Carillon Music at the age of three. He also began singing in school and church choirs and was a member of the Amadeus Children's Choir for five years under the direction of Irene Schmor. Grant started his post-secondary music training at Douglas College, studying voice, pipe organ and harpsichord before taking time off to travel with The Continental Singers based in Ventura, California. With The Continentals, Grant was given the opportunity to travel to 21 different countries while performing as a vocalist and pianist. He eventually was part of three studio recordings and became a musical director with The Continentals for choral and instrumental touring groups. In 1998 Grant returned to school attending Biola University in La Mirada, California. While at Biola, Grant studied vocal performance with Dr. William Lock and Dr. Jeanne Robison, was tenor section leader in the Biola Chorale, as well as being an accompanist for other voice majors and the Women's Chorale. As a first-year student he was selected to sing with The King's Men, a six-member male a cappella group patterned after The King's Singers, performing a variety of repertoire from 16th-century motets to contemporary music. Grant also took part in the school's Opera Theater productions, performing scenes from Madama Butterfly and La Bohème as well as the roles of Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro and Tamino in The Magic Flute. Since returning to Canada in 2004, Grant has been teaching voice, piano and music theory. His students have received First Class Honours with Distinction results on examinations with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Gold classification at the Fraser Valley Kiwanis Music Festival, as well as trophies and scholarships from the Carillon Music Festival. In 2008, Grant joined the tenor section of the Vancouver Chamber Choir - one of the finest vocal ensembles in Canada. He was also accepted as a member of NATS (the National Association of Teachers of Singing) in 2013 and has enjoying being an active member within the local Vancouver Chapter.!
