Caring for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans THE ANSWER

IN FLANDERS FIELDSIn Flanders Fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row

That mark our place, and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders Fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe,

To you from failing hands we throwThe Torch: be yours to hold it high!

If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders FieldsLt Col John McCrae (1872-1918)

(A Canadian Artillery Medical Officer, who died on 28th January 1918 whilst on “active service” in France. He is buried at Wimereux, France.)

THE ANSWERFear not that you have died for naught; The Torch you threw to us we caught! And now our hands will hold it high,

Its glorious light shall never die. We’ll not break faith with you who lie

On many a field.R.W. Lilliard

(An American Poet. “The Answer” was adapted from the second verse of his poem “An

American Answer” which was first published in the “New York Evening Post”)

Hello everyoneI hope you all coped with the delights and challenges over the Christmas season. The joy of spending quality time with family and friends and indulging in the spoils of special treats results in the challenge of having to lose the additional kilo and centimetre around the waistline!Melbourne Legacy is about to undergo a change during 2015 as the Chief Executive, David Cull, announced his intention to retire to the Board of Management. Consequently the process of finding a replacement is currently underway and as soon as a decision is made I will let you know.David has made an outstanding contribution to the life of Melbourne Legacy. He joined Legacy in 1991 and took on the role of Chief Executive in 2003. Prior to this appointment David served in several senior management roles such as Manager – Fundraising and Public Relations, Manager for Welfare/Pensions Operations, and Secretary of Legacy’s National Marketing Committee for a period of six years. We all wish David and his wife Margaret good health and enjoyment in the next phase in their lives.I have been asked to complete another term as President, so ‘Team Harrison’ (my wife Derithe and I) will have the privilege to serve Melbourne Legacy until March 2016. 2015 is a significant year in Australia’s history with the commemoration of the landing at Gallipoli 100 years ago. So once again there is likely to be a significant increase in the number of commemorative activities held throughout the State of Victoria.Derithe and I wish you all a year of good health and happiness and will take the opportunity to meet as many of you as possible at Legacy activities throughout the year.In the meantime, take care.Ian Harrison President

Melbourne Legacy gratefully acknowledges the thoughtful generosity of people who choose to make an In Memoriam donation rather than sending flowers at the time of death of a relative or close friend. Everyone joined in singing Christmas carols and some guests danced to the festive music, which was provided by Fun Arts Creative Entertainment. A traditional meal of roast turkey with all the trimmings was followed by an old fashioned Christmas pudding and custard. Clearly everyone enjoyed it very much. The arrival of Santa was a special highlight and everyone received a booklet of photos taken at recent Dependants with a Disability events including the 2014 Somers Camp. Melbourne Legacy Welfare Spotlight

These are just two examples of the support that can be provided to widows through Melbourne Legacy. For welfare information, advice or support, please call your Legatee or contact Melbourne Legacy’s Welfare Coordinator – Aged Care on 8626 0500.

'Mrs D W, until mid-2014, lived a healthy and independent life. A sudden decline in health was precipitated by a fall and subsequent visits to four different specialists, as well as a physiotherapist, which was very costly for the widow. She had enough savings to cover her funeral expenses only and these additional costs were going to make a substantial dent in these savings. Aside from the financial stress, the trauma had a significant effect on the widow’s emotional wellbeing. A visit to the widow’s home was undertaken by a Legatee in conjunction with the Welfare Coordinator – Aged Care - and financial support was provided to assist with these out-of-pocket expenses. A referral to a Falls and Balance Clinic and an assessment for a Personal Alarm was also made.A subsequent visit showed a significant improvement in the widow’s health and wellbeing and she continues to live at home independently, including being able to, once again, enjoy her gardening activities.'

'Mrs B M received some financial support to cover two weeks of respite following a serious fall and rehabilitation. Ongoing intervention and support enabled the widow to return home. This widow was at high risk of needing to go into permanent residential care without the provision of increased support at home.A referral to DVA Veterans Home Care resulted in additional support services in the home, including shopping and personal care. An additional rail along the pathway was also organised via referral to an Occupational Therapist.Mrs B M was also at risk of social isolation. A joint visit by the Welfare Coordinator and the Assistant Manager of the SRS where the respite took place, enabled the instigation of regular visits back to the SRS to enable Mrs B M to join the residents for a meal and participate in activities.'

Melbourne Legacy provides welfare assistance to many of its widows each year in order to help them to stay healthy, independent, mobile and connected to the

community.Information, advice and referrals to other services are provided by both Legatees and Welfare staff. Financial assistance to those in necessitous circumstances is provided through grants, loans, medical benefit subsidies and transport subsidies.

Dr Jenny Picking says, ‘I like to think that by including Legacy

in my will I am perpetuating what my father, a Legatee, did and the money I have bequeathed to Legacy will help them continue their wonderful work in the community of caring for families of deceased veterans. My father, a WW2 veteran, was a dedicated Legatee and I remember fondly as a child accompanying him to numerous Legacy functions. Each year, my father would send every Legacy widow he knew a card and handkerchief and I used to enjoy helping him with this task. I was lucky that several of our family friends were Legatees and I became aware, at a young age, of the fantastic work Legacy does. My father often took me to Legacy barbecues where I would mix with the Junior Legatees and in January each year we visited Legacy children at the Legacy Somers Camp.’

Don't throw your used stamps away!Send them in to Melbourne Legacy to raise much-needed funds

Every Wednesday between 9.30am and 12.30pm, a group of dedicated stamp sorters and trimmers meet to raise much-needed funds for Legacy. New helpers are always needed. The stamps are sold by weight so it is important not to trim too close. Ideally 6 mm (¼ inch) away from the stamp/s is a good guide if you would like to trim them yourself (see examples right). If not just send in the whole envelope with the stamp intact. If possible please sort into cancelled (with postmark) and uncancelled (no postmark) stamps.Post your stamps to: Melbourne Legacy GPO Box 4312, Melbourne 3001OR bring them in to: Legacy House 293 Swanston St, Melbourne. If you need more information or would like to help sort and trim stamps on Wednesday mornings between 9.30am and 12.30pm please call Trisha Keevers or Dot Byrne on 8626 0500.

About 10 happy ladies meet at Legacy House by 10.00am on the second and

fourth Mondays of most months for an outing. We usually take a tram or a train to a pleasant walking trail, where the speed is quite gentle to accommodate the ability of all walkers.

There is usually as much chatter and admiration of the surrounds as there is energetic walking. We make sure that we arrive at an appealing cafe, with a variety of food to satisfy all appetites, at lunch-time. Maybe after lunch we will continue with a short walk before catching a tram or train back to the city, arriving there about 2.00pm.We are sure there are several more ladies who would enjoy our rambles.

To begin 2015 we are making a trip to Geelong so need to leave earlier. We leave from Legacy House by 9.30am to catch a train from Southern Cross station at 10.00am (you can meet us at the gate to the platform at Southern Cross if you wish). We will probably not arrive back in Melbourne until about 3.00pm.If you would like to join us for Geelong or any of our walks, ring Dot Byrne or Trisha Keevers on 8626 0500 and request a medical form. We fill in one of these at the beginning of each year.Legatee Lesley Scott
