From our PresidentOnbehalfofCaritasJapan,Iwouldliketoconveyourgratitudetoallwhoencour-
ageandsupportourefforts.Iamsendingthisreporttoinformyouofouractivitiesover
thepastyeartoassistthoseinneed.
Needlesstosay,sinceMarch11,2011,ourpriorityhasbeentoprovideassistance
tothosepeopleandplacesaffectedbytheGreatEastJapanEarthquakedisaster.Wein-
tend,withspecialassistancefromCatholicReliefServices(theAmericanCaritas), to
continuetoprovideavarietyofsuchservices.
Ofcourse,wealsocontinue to respond toneedselsewhere,both inJapanand
abroad,whennaturaldisastersandviolencecausesuffering.Wealsorespondtothe
voicesofthosewhopointoutthecrisisofclimatechangeandcalluponustoreflectur-
gentlyuponthemeaningofhumanlifeinthefaceofenvironmentalproblems.Wecan-
notavoidfacingthatchallenge.Indoingso,wemustnot limitourselvestotackling
onlyoneaspectofit.Wemustdealwithabroadrangeofissues,helpingpeoplemake
choicesthatenablethemtolivetogetherinasustainableway.WeatCaritasJapanwill
continuetocooperateineffortstobuildabetterworld.
Atlastyear’sGeneralAssemblyofCaritasInternationalis,Manila’sCardinalTaglewaselectedpresident, thefirstfromAsia,whileIwasre-electedtoasecondtermas
presidentofCaritasAsia.CaritasJapanisgratefulforyoursupportforourinvolvement
withtheCaritasInternationalis“OneHumanFamily,FoodforAllCampaign”initiativetocombatpovertyandhunger.Eradicatingpovertyandfosteringsustainabledevelop-
mentarelong-termchallengesthatwecannotavoid.
Providingdirectassistancetothoseinneednecessarilyinvolvesthetransformation
ofsocietyasawhole.Therefore,educationalactivitiesaimedatchangingourworldare
essentialsothatallourbrothersandsistersmight livefull lives.Let’sreachoutourhandstobringthatabout.

Social Awareness
Intheworldtoday,peoplefacethreatstohumanrightsandlifeitself.Inordertopromoteawarenessofthesesituations,CaritasJapansponsorstrainingsessionsandseminarsaswellaspublishingbookletsthatdeepenunderstandingofthesechal-lenges.
■FiftypeopleattendingtheNationalRallyforJusticeandPeaceinTokyo,September9,2015,heardalecturebyCaritasJapanDirectorKoMiyanagatitled“Isolationandsuicide–think-ingaboutsupportinglife.”
■BetweenNovember2015andFebruary2016,CaritasJapansponsoredasix-sessionseminar,“Supportinglife.”
Atotalof50peopletookpart,ofwhom30completedtheentireseminar.Inthefirstthreesessions,participantssharedinsmallgroups,talkingaboutthechallengesofsocialisolation.Thesecondhalfwasdevotedtolearningaboutearlyinterventiononbehalfofthosewhofeelisolatedandsuicidal.Thethemesofthesixsessionswere:
Being unable to say, “Help me!”Being connected;Escaping isolation;Meeting different ideas;Building supportive friendships;What we can do.
■CaritasJapanparticipatedintheThirdKorea-JapanSuicidePreventionSymposiumonDe-cember15,2015,atHongikUniversityinSeoul.Threehundredpeopletookpart.
■The10thannualmeetingofthe21stCenturyChristianSocialWelfareActivitiesConferencewasheldinFebruary.YasuhikoMukaiyachiandothersfromBethelHousegaveapresenta-tionon“EncountersthatEchowithLife”tosome200participants.

Every four years, there is a general assemblyofCaritas Internationalis.Themost recentgatheringof424Caritasrepresentativesfrom140countries,washeldMay12-17,2015with the theme“OneHumanFamily,CaringforCreation.”
Priortothegeneralsession,therewereseveralkeynotespeeches.On the firstday,FatherGustavoGutierrez, thefatherof liberation theology,andProfessorJeffreySachs,directoroftheEarthInstituteatColumbiaUniversityinNewYorkandnotedcampaigneragainstpoverty,spoke.Onthesecondday,CardinalPeterTurkson,presidentoftheVatican’sPontificalCouncil for Justice andPeace, addressed thegathering.
Variousagendaitemswerediscussedin thegeneralassembly,andCardinalLuisAntonioTagleofthePhilippineswaselectedpresident, the firstpresident fromAsia.Theassemblyapprovedaframeworkandfundingplanforactionpoliciesforthenextfouryears.
Under the title“Hearing thecriesof thepoor,” theframeworkofactivitiespolicyintendstoembodythecallofPopeFrancistobea“poorchurchforthepoor”byfollowingfivedirections:

1 Caritas at the heart of the Church:
Uphold the Christian identity of Caritas as an essential service of the Church to the poor.
2 Save lives, rebuild communities:
Reduce the impact of humanitarian crises by enhancing disaster preparedness and re-sponse.
3 Promote sustainable integral human development:
Eradicate poverty in all its forms by empowering people and transforming unjust sys-tems and structures.
4 Build global solidarity:
Address the causes of extreme poverty through strengthened communication, education and mobilisation, and enhance the visibility of Caritas.
5 Make the Caritas confederation more effective:
Build a stronger confederation based on professional and effective members guided by “formation of the heart”., and mobilise more resources.
