A dangerous robber from Khutsongis on the loose inMerafong and thepoli-ce need help in finding him.Swazi Simelane (in his late twenties)
was recently released from prison inKlerksdorp. He was serving part of his12-year-sentence for robbery but wasrecently let out on parole.Robbery is seemingly in Simelane’s
blood, as he walked out of prison justto continue what landed him there inthe first place.On Friday, April 18, Simelane visited
a local Khutsong tavern, where a gang-related fight broke out between himand around 20 gangsters (boys agedbetween 15 and 20 years of age).Due to the fact that he was alone, Si-
melane ran away to his grandmother’shouse where his cousin was asleep,with the gangsters chasing him all thewhile.At the home in Xhosa Section, Sime-
lane woke his 19-year-old cousin tohelp him fight the gangsters. The twowent back out and a fight broke out.
Unfortunately Simelane’s cousinwas stabbedwith aknife, but his reacti-on to this stunned those around him,as well as police officers.Instead of alarming other people that
his cousin had been stabbed, Simelaneleft the young man bleeding on theground. He walked around to the backof the house and entered the room oftenants.He then threatened the tenantswith a garden spade, stealing two cellphones and R 540.His villainous spree did not stop he-
re. Simelane then proceeded to ano-ther Khutsong home where he robbedthe occupants of more cell phones andmoney. He then ran away and has stillnot been found.Simelane’s cousin was taken to hos-
pital, but he demanded to get dischar-ged. He went home and tragically pass-ed away a few days later.Simelane is ‘pitch black,’ very short

This is the second-worst year on record so far, the worstbeing 2012. In both years, Turkey wasthe country in which most journalistshave been imprisoned. A total of 31journalists were killed in 2013, mostof them in Iraq, while four have been
killed this year. A chilling fact of thesekillings is that the a total of 74 % of thejournalists killed last year were doingstories onpolitics, andnotwar. In plaas daarvan om nog vir oulaaste kyk hoe hulle dalk die mense watvir hulle stem kan help, was almal netbesig om met breë glimlagte mooidinge voor verkiesingslokale aan al-mal te vertel. In dié bedrywigheid hetallerhande probleme skoon onge-siens verbygegaan.
Wysneus moes die afgelope paarweke maar sy neus toeknyp elke keerwanneer hy in die parkeerterreinvoor Friendly Grocer in Carletonvilleloop. Die rede hiervoor was dat grie-selrige rioolwater nou al vir ‘n gerui-me tyd uit ‘n mangat voor dié onder-neming stroom.
Selfs diegene wat net verby die ge-bou ry, kan sien hoe die riool tot in
die straat spoel. Aangesien dié par-keerterrein langs een van die hoofroe-tes deur ons dorp is, is Wysneus sekerbaie ander mense het dit ook al gesien.Baie besoekers sidder seker oor hoedie res van die dorp lyk.

A man was brutally assaulted anddied from his injuries over allegedoutstanding debt recently.A Khutsong man was recently vi-
sited at his home by another manwhom he owed an undisclosedamount of money.An argument started between the
two men indoors, after which thefight moved outside. At some pointthe borrower hit the debtor with hisforehead, causing the man to passout and fall to the ground.When he came to, the debtor got
up and tried to fight back, but befo-re he knew it, the borrower dealthim a heavy blow to the back of hishead with a brick.The man was admitted to hospi-
tal where he lay for a short while.A few days after his return back ho-me, however, he passed away.

Excellent vigilance by three securityguards and the spokesperson of theCarletonville Hospital stopped a carthief in his tracks.On Wednesday evening, April 30, a
white male entered the hospitalgrounds through the pedestrian gateand, when confronted by the securityguards on duty, claimed that he wasthere to see a female family memberin the maternity ward.The guards on duty, messrs Johan-
nes Serapelo, Shadrak Monageng andaMrMabuto, granted theman permis-sion to enter the hospital for his visit.Themanwent to the entrance at cas-
ualty, but then walked around andtried to enter the hospital through themain entrance at reception. Mr Mata-bo Letsoalo, whowas working late thatday, saw the man and told him that hewas only allowed to enter through theentrance at casualty.
Themanwalkedback around to cas-ualty and was then in the hospital foraround 35 minutes. “He came back tothe gate to ask us for cigarettes,” Sera-pelo and Monageng told the Herald.“We informed him that we do not smo-ke,” tells Letsoalo, who was also at thegate at that stage, “and suggested he goask the personnel at EMS (EmergencyMedical Services) just across the par-king lot, also in the hospital grounds.”Themanwalked to theEMS, andnot
long after that, a female paramedic ap-proached the guards to give thema ver-sion different to to that of the the sus-pect and his search for ‘cigarettes.’“She told us that there was a white guywho was fiddling with an ambulance,trying to open it, andwhen she approa-ched him to ask what he wanted, hejust ignored her and walk toward thenurses residence.Two guards took dif-ferent routes to the back of the hospitalwhere the nurses’ residence is, andLetsoalo followed. The men searched
for the suspicious man on the proper-ty, but did not find him.A fewminutes later, theman approa-
ched the boom-gate where the guardswere, coming from the direction ofEMS and the parking lot again, with acigarette. “He toldus that hehad gottena cigarette from EMS, and walked to-ward the nurses residence to look fora tap, as he was thirsty,” the guards ex-plain. Matabo, who left just after this,adds saying, “We then showed him atap on the side of the hospital, wherehe went to drink water.”The man then went and sat by the
guards at the gate, but when they saidthat they were going into their boothat the gate, at around midnight becau-se it had gotten cold outside, the manentered the hospital again.Around 15 minutes went by, and the
man must have thought that the gu-ards had fallen asleep in their booth.Their watchfulness caught him off gu-ard however, because as he opened
and tried to start a Toyota Cressida inthe parking lot, the guards swoopeddown on him and arrested him.“He had his own master key with
which he managed to open and poten-tially start the Cressida,” the guardsexplained.The Carletonville SAPS were called
to collect theman, and apparently arri-ved in no time. “These guys did an ex-cellent job,” Letsoalo said. “The Cres-sida actually belongs to a staffmemberof the hospital.” Apparently the vehicleowner was also very grateful that theguards of Refitlhile Security had beenas observant as they were and mana-ged to stop the suspect from stealinghis vehicle.

Various ministers recently listened tominers and ex-miners voice their chal-lenges and frustrations at the Carleton-ville Hospital.
The Minister of Health, Dr. AaronMotswaledi officially opened a OneStop Service Centre for miners and ex-miners at the Carletonville Hospital onApril 29.
“The One Stop Service Centre wasfunded by Mining Companies in theWest Rand District, National Union ofMine Workers, World Bank as well asthe Chamber of Mines,” told Mr MataboLetsoalo, Spokesperson of the hospi-tal. “The opening of this centre was at-tended by over a thousand miners andex-miners from different mining com-panies in the West Rand.”
Letsoalo says that fifty miners andex-miners had an opportunity to en-gage in a dialogue with the Deputy Mi-nister of Health, Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa,Deputy Minister of the Department ofMineral Resources, Mr. Godfrey Oli-phant, the president for the Chamberof Mines, Mr Mike Teke, MEC for He-
alth in Gauteng, Mr Hope Papo, Mayorof Merafong Municipality, Ms MaphefoMogale-Letsie, Chamber of Mines, Na-tional Union of Mine Workers, repre-sentatives from the Mine Workers Oc-cupational Disease Bureau as well asmining companies.
He says that ex-miners voiced thatthey used to make claims from one offi-ce in Johannesburg where they weresent from pillar to post and that theybelieve that their challenges will be mo-re easily addressed by the One StopService Centre.
“This centre will provide medical, re-habilitation, social and financial sup-port services, as well as assistance withcompensation, pension and providentfunds to miners and ex-miners,” Letso-alo tells enthusiastically.
“In addition to this,” he adds, “thecentre will also provide assistance tominers injured on duty, health promo-tion services such as blood pressurescreening, HIV counselling and testingas well as TB counselling and testing.”
In his address, Minister of Health,Dr. Aaron Motswaledi said that TB isthe main cause of deaths in mining, fol-
lowed by rock-falls and accidents. Heencouraged the attendees to fully usethe centre in order to detect the virusat an early stage.
The One Stop Services Centre will al-so benefit ex-miners, who are fromneighbouring countries as well as thecommunity of Merafong in general.

This week ground that has been cavingin on a busy sidewalk in Khutsong wasstill not attended to.
Members of the public contacted theHerald in March, telling the newspaperthat the ground was caving in on a side-walk around the corner of the Khuts-ong Community Hall. The ground wascaving in at two adjacent places and itlooked as if a sinkhole could appear atany time.
This corner is next to one of Khuts-ong’s few traffic lights and is thus at a
leaking water from pipes, water metersand the like, can lead to sinkholes.Should they detect the first signs of asinkhole forming, namely cracks onthe ground, they should immediatelynotify the municipality,” a municipalspokesman responded.
Despite the fact that almost twomonths have passed since the matterwas reported to the municipality, no at-tention had been given to the problemby this week. There were no signs thatsomeone might have tried to fill up the
holes, no barrier tape was put uparound the holes and no other meas-ures were taken to keep people walkingby on the sidewalk safe.
“No-one cares about us,” a pedestri-an noted when the Herald’s journalistwas again taking a photo of the subsi-ding ground on Monday.
Despite the fact that further questi-ons about the matter were sent to themunicipality, no feedback was receivedby the time of the newspaper going toprint.
No attention to sinking ground on busy sidewalk

The longest single owner of a businessin Carletonville celebrated a specialbirthday last week.Anastasios Anastasiades had a 76th
birthday with a difference on 1May. Notonly did he get a huge birthday cakefromemployees atThreeMonkeysSpar,he was also ‘arrested’ by police mem-bers to ‘serve a lifelong sentence’ in hisoffice in the building.The cake and ‘sentence’ were organi-
sed by employees of the business, whichAnastasiades has been owning and run-ning for the past 40 years, making him
the longest single owner of a business inthe town.He came to South Africa in 1967, set-
tled in Carletonville soon thereafter andfirst owned a take-away and restaurantin Flint Street.He later bought the cafe and building
at the site of the present supermarket.Anastasiades enthusiastically tells thatthe name by which the supermarket isstill knownwas given to the original cafeby its first owner,who, ashewasmakingshelves with his relatives, noted thatthey looked like “threemonkeys” duringthe task.During the years Anastasiades did,
however, not only keep himself busywith running the business, he comple-ted seven years of theology studies aswell as four years’ psychology, and isqualified toactasabishop inhischurch.Throughout the years, this knowledge,as well as his knowledge of the Greeklanguage, has led Anastasiades to assistmanyreligious leaders fromchurches inthe town who wanted to gain better un-derstanding of old Bible texts.Although he has never practised as a
bishop,Anastasiadesstill tries to livehislife according to God’s Word and has
even assisted couples with marital mat-ters.“God helps me to say good words.
Why must I then say bad things toothers?” the veteran businessman mu-sed.Anotheroneofhis little-known talents
is writing. Anastasiades has been a jour-nalist for the Greek Gnomi, meaning‘opinion’, newspaper for years and alsocarries two press cards for this role.Despite the various things Anastasia-
des can do to keep himself busy, he doesnotmindhis ‘sentence’ for having to stay
in the business for manyyears to come.“I know the names of
about 70% of my custo-mers. They are myfriends; I don’t see themasmy pockets,” he says.According to Anastasia-
des, the changeshehas se-en through the years in thebuying patterns of clientshave been for the better.“People now practise
better self-control.They rather leave the
luxuries and buy whatthey really need.I think that this is the
proper way that it shouldbe,” he told the Herald.

rum (WEF) global risk 2014 report,South Africa is rated as the third hig-hest with unemployment in the worldfor people between the ages of 15 and24. This report also estimates that mo-re than 50% of young South Africansbetween 15 and 24 are unemployed.In addition, the rising cost of higher
education and little chance of findinga job, makes this May Day, for many,not particularly worth celebrating.The WEF report shows that if you do
have a job, try to keep it, because if youtake it for granted there is a greaterchance you may join the unemploy-ment line.With the elections political parties
have been telling us about their job cre-ation plans and I hope, whichever poli-tical party wins, that the promise tocreate jobs will be honoured so that themillions of unemployed people sittingat homewith high qualificationsmay fi-nally obtain employment. Moreover, Ithink that for school children the reali-ty of the job market may be a very de-moralising influence as these childrenmay find it pointless to study further
if the rewards for a higher education donot necessarily guarantee or includeemployment. I also asked some youngreaders whether they think Workers’Day isworth celebrating asmany of ouryouth struggle getting jobs?

Due to excellent work by a local detecti-ve, a big syndicate is slowly goingdown.On Saturday evening, at around
22:00, Detective Warrant Officer PieterMaartens received information about atruck carrying copper cable.It later came to light that the truck
driver had been approached by peoplein the Cape, and was offered R 1 000to give them a lift and transport ‘some-thing’ to Gauteng.Once in Touwsrivier, a small railway
town in the Western Cape, the twomenwho had hitched a lift with the truck,asked the driver to stop at a certainplace, as they just wanted to ‘collect so-mething.’“What they came to get,” tells Consta-
ble Elsie Tshonte, spokesperson of theFochville SAPS, “was a whole roll ofcopper cable.” Themen told the driver,however, that it was just wires. Thedriver thus happily obliged to load theroll of wire, and continued the journeyback to Fochville.Once at the Engen Garage, where the
truck driver had stopped, the suspectsgot nervous when they saw a police ve-hicle and told the driver to just driveaway immediately. He drove back to
Fochville, because this was his destina-tion in the first place.“Maartens received information that
a white Quantumwas going tomeet thetwomen at the first entrance of Fochvil-le,” Tshonte tells, “so he sped thereand, true to his source’s information,found the white Quantum.”
The suspects in the Quantum sensedthat Maartens is a police officer andsped away in the direction of Parys.Maartens called for back-up and in notime, the Fochville SAPS had stoppedand pulled off the Quantum.“One suspect ran away,” Tshonte
tells.When searching
the Quantum policeofficers found bala-clavas, gloves and a
side cutter which made the situationeven more suspicious.Doing great investigative work,
Maartensmanaged to link the suspectsin the truck to the suspects in theQuantum and arrested all of them forthe possession of suspected stolen pro-perty.It later came to light, during interro-
gations, that the men are all from Bek-kersdal and formpart of amassive cop-per cable theft syndicate.

The road between Carletonville andthe N14 that has been closed becauseof a sinkhole, will stay closed for atleast another three months.The R500-road, which links Carle-
tonville with the N14 main route bet-ween Krugersdorp and Ventersdorp,has been closed since February aftera sinkhole fell in on the side.At the time that it fell in, the hole was
so deep that a telephone pole was al-most completely swallowed. Althoughthe road surface had, at the time, notcaved in, authorities closed off theroad because the sinkhole reached be-neath the road surface.“The hole has certainly grown since
the road was closed,” Mr Dikkie Beu-kes, an official of the Gauteng RoadsDepartment, under whose jurisdicti-on the specific road falls, told the He-rald on Tuesday.Beukes told the Herald that geolo-
gists who had inspected the sinkhole,indicated that the hole will probablyalso fall in further.They determined this by boring ho-
les into the ground in the area of thesinkhole. As there is a large possibility

The problem wasthis week worsened by the fact thatprospectors busy with work next tothe Wonderfonteinspruit allegedlystopped Roads Department employ-ees from getting water from the spruitto spray on the roads being affected bythe extra traffic.“A councillor from the area,Ms Judy
Rossouw, also asked that if we cannotspray water on the gravel roads, thewhole section of the road between theN14 and the alternative road to Ven-tersdorp, which was previously usedwhile the N14 was under reconstructi-on, must be closed. This would, howe-ver, cause much inconvenience forother road users and we would rathertry to get water from somewhere elsethan to continue with this drasticstep,” Beukes told the Herald.He added that the department was
still waiting for brighter new signs towarn motorists against the road beingclosed. Although these were orderedmore than a month ago, it has still notarrived and many drivers, who are ig-noring other signs to slowdownbeforethe road closure, damage their vehi-cles when they burst into the concretebarriers currently blocking off thesinkhole road.In the meantime, Beukes indicated
that workers of the department havealready started fixing potholes onother roads in the area, such as theroad leading past Blyvooruitzicht andthe section of the road between Pot-chefstroom and Vereeniging fallingunder their jurisdiction. The depart-ment will also soon level the ‘shoul-ders’ of a section of the P111-road andwill start to clear the sides of some ro-ads in the Fochville-area to curb thespreading of veld fires during the co-ming winter veld fire season.The area in which the sinkhole ca-
ved in, is known for sinkholes. A secti-on of the N14 was closed since April2008 to last year after a sinkhole cavedin on this main route. A sinkhole alsodamaged an alternative road that tra-vellers had to use during the time thatother roads were closed.As far as could be determined, the
inconvenience caused by the partiallyclosed road has already led to somedrivers coming from the direction ofPotchefstroom to rather use alternati-ve routes such as the Rysmierbult ro-ad, linking the R501 to the N14.

On Monday workers of theGauteng Roads Departmentwere again busy shifting con-crete blocks into place afterthey were shifted by driverswho bumped into them withtheir vehicles. The blocks bardrivers from entering the sec-tion of the road where thesinkhole has fallen.
The dust on this gravel road, an alternativeto the road closed because of the sinkhole,is currently a worry to many residents of thisarea.

Last ye-ar he received his provincial coloursand was narrowly beaten this year.South African Karate Protea, Enzo Pil-lay, was awarded a trophy for achievinghisWKFprovincial cap this seasonafterending in the second place at the WKFAll Styles Championship in Bloemfon-tein earlier this year.The Gauteng Provincial Tournament
is very tough with close to 700 entriesevery year and winning a cap is a realhonour in Gauteng. Sensei Kruben Pil-lay said that it takes approximatelythree years for one to achieve a blackbelt diploma from the time he or shestarts karate. During this time one hasto work hard through a structured syl-labus by mastering the art of dynamictechniques and forms during whichcontinuous assessment and grading ta-ke place during the full course. Stu-dents receive a different colour belt asthey grade and gain more experience.“I am proud of all the students who
have made it through with flying co-lours,” Sensei Kruben Pillay said afterthe event.The Japanese Master Kanazawa also
