“Carlos helped me a lot in integrating with the rest of the team when I joined Sporting. I enjoyed his coaching style because there was a lot of ball possession and circulation which allowed us to score many goals and win multiple titles that year.

I really enjoyed playing in the pivot position because I was engaged in both ball possession and pressing the opponent when we lost the ball. One time, Carlos gave an example that I should play as ‘ghost’ to avoid the opponent’s close marking (moving at their back so they couldn´t see me), and then appear to support my teammates and receive the ball with space. It was a great experience for me and I thank Coach Carlos for everything he taught me that season and for the support that he still gives me every time we talk. I think he has a big future in football and I would love to be coached by him again.”Rodrigo Simões - U15 Futebol Clube Os Belenenses Player | Former Sporting Academy Player

team development in the modern game• Upheld the standards, codes of conduct and public image of each club worked for

“I have had the pleasure of playing under a great team of coaches at Sporting, of which Carlos Miguel was a part. I learned a lot that year and really enjoyed the way Carlos passed on the idea of how to play. He used the idea of the ‘castle’ and the ‘house’. When attacking, the team would open up into the ‘castle’; the pivot (7v7) would occupy the ‘dining room’ that is the inside space of the midfield, in order to better connect all spaces of the pitch. When defending, this would close into the ‘house’ where space would be reduced and the team would be more compact and guide the opposition into making mistakes. I am very thankful for being a part of this idea and for recording one of my best years at Sporting under Carlos.”Luís Ferreira - U15 Sporting Clube de Portugal Player

COACHING PHILOSOPHY - MY JOURNEY IN FOOTBALL

While finishing my education as a young player and moving into senior football, I became inspired to become a coach. I had always taken great interest in the tactical side of the game, and José Mourinho’s treble winning side of 2002/03 (the UEFA Cup, Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal) established such an exciting and all-conquering style of play that my ambition became to coach at the highest level.

I began university in 2004 in order to gain the academic qualifications in sport, physical education and high performance that could support my development as a coach. My degrees have given me the opportunity to not only learn from experienced professionals (such as Prof. Francisco Seirul·lo at the INEFC, a First Team Coach at FC Barcelona for many years), but also to conduct in-depth studies into the player development and coaching strategies at FC Porto as a basis for my thesis.

As well as completing my qualifications, I continued to play the game and was able to play professionally for Atlético de Valdevez and Boavista between 2008 and 2011. At Valdevez I reached my peak as a player as we reached the Portuguese Cup (Taça de Portugal) quarter-finals. My position as a pivot in the midfield (i.e. Pep Guardiola, Xavi, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets) allowed me to directly apply the principles I was developing as a coach, as the pivot position is an integral idea within my playing philosophy.

By playing professionally I also gained experience in the day to day challenges presented to coaches, managers and players themselves. I observed how tactics are devised, training sessions are delivered and how the players are kept motivated within a senior environment, learning lessons that I still utilise today.

“Carlos is very focused, a hard worker, and it was always clear that despite being a young player the coaching side of the game was something that he wanted to explore. He already had his own vision for training and how his team would express themselves on the pitch. I know that Carlos always shares with his players what he showed me at Boavista: that he is brave, ambitious, determined and takes pleasure in every task he undertakes.”Jorge Silva - Former Boavista FC Captain & Portugal International

Following a spell in which I focused on coaching and working at the Sporting Academy, I returned to play for Tocha in 2012/13, progressed to Limianos in 2013/2014, and finally signed for my home-town club Naval in 2014. Playing 30 games for the club, I helped them secure their status in the Portuguese second division during a difficult period both on and off the field.

Playing a key role in this way for the club I’ve always supported was the ideal situation in which to finish my playing career, and so I departed to fully focus on my progression as a coach.

Over the course of my career thus far I have been fortunate to learn through a diverse range of experiences and influences. This all began as a young player at local clubs, where my abilities as a creative and intelligent midfielder earned me a move to the Sporting Clube de Portugal Academy aged 16.

The Sporting Academy has always been an outstanding producer of young talent, with multiple players progressing to senior and international football from the group that I played with (Cristiano Ronaldo; João Moutinho; Miguel Veloso; Silvestre Varela; Yannick Djaló) and shared my academy environment with on a daily basis (Rui Patrício).

My exposure to not only the elite coaching methods at the club, but also the routines and attitudes of these future stars has had a significant impact on how I now engage with and nurture young talent.

“I coached Carlos at Atlético de Valdevez in 2008/2009 where we enjoyed a memorable campaign in the Portuguese Cup by reaching the quarter-finals after beating the top three teams of the 2nd league. Carlos was distinguished by his superior tactical discipline and awareness, always effectively anticipating what was going to happen on the pitch.”Micael Sequeira (UEFA A Licensed Coach) - Former Atlético de Valdevez, Desportivo das Aves & CD Trofense Coach (Last two from the Portuguese 2nd League)

“To enhance the game and enhance the players through a superior idea of playing.”

COACHING PHILOSOPHY - THE MODERN COACH

“The influence and responsibility that we have in the development of our players should not be underestimated.”

Pepijn LijndersLiverpool FC Development Coach

At its core, football will always remain the same game and retain several key characteristics. However, the fine tactical, technical, physical and mental aspects of the game evolve constantly. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the space and time to control the game and create chances through ball possession as the pace increases at every level.

The role of the coach in today’s game is therefore critical to ensure their team is able to compete at the required level. Ultimately the modern coach must aim:

“There are two types of coaches: those who enhance their team’s and players’ performance, and those who do not.”

José MourinhoFormer Chelsea FC Manager

The modern coach must therefore enhance collective and individual development in a reciprocal balance in order to respond to the current demands of football.

I believe that by recognising this complementary relationship, I can drive tangible and great improvement throughout a team and enable them to compete at the required level while upholding the image and philosophy of a club.

When I, or any other coach, approaches a club, team or academy structure, the starting point for development will always be defining the philosophy. Namely asking the question:

How do we want to play and why?

Defining the playing style and strategy allows the coach to then establish a balance between collective play and the technical development of individuals in order to build a superior team on the field.

To achieve this balance we first look at the characteristics of what defines an elite team. Though the best teams in the world are all different in their approach (i.e. Barcelona vs Real Madrid, Bayern Munich vs Manchester City, Juventus vs Arsenal) there are common patterns that are shared by all of the top teams:

While we will aim to replicate the patterns of play common to elite clubs, the specific players we have available will be a critical aspect in defining how we play. A coach must look at each player’s attributes and skills in order to develop a tactical strategy and supporting philosophy in which the players can individually and collectively excel.

Players must be able to understand what is expected of them on the pitch while knowing that the team’s organisation promotes and enhances their creativity and available decisions. Being able to identify these situations is the responsibility of the coach, who continuously enhances their decision making skills through feedback and analysis.

• Complex tactical organisation shaped by how best to score against the specific opposition in front of them

• Controlling the game by taking initiative rather than playing passively

• Maintaining high quality and intelligent ball circulation

• Controlling the interior space of the midfield

• Playing with several players with a capacity to score and appear in scoring zones beyond the attackers (enhancing the surprise factor)

• Thinking of our playing style in terms of its global organisation (having mechanisms of compensation and balance that evidence that organisation)

It is these characteristics that in turn impact how we play as they are proven to allow teams to achieve results at the highest level.
