Last Saturday a large group of DA sup-porters braved the cold to clean streetsthat have been left dirty for some time.Various residents of Carletonville
have been complaining that the openstands along some streets are beingused as dumping places by litterbugs.The councillor under whose jurisdicti-on the streets fall, Mr Carlos Rebelo,has requested assistance from the mu-nicipality on several previous occasi-ons.On Saturday, 18 April, Rebelo and
a group of enthusiastic supporters setoff from the side of Pick n Pay to cleansome parts of the town and remove therubbish on the back of a truck.“We wanted to get the message out
there thatwe, the residents of Carleton-ville, deserve a clean town.We have cle-anedmost of Onyx Drive and Coronati-on Street”, Rebelo told the Herald onMonday.
According to him, the concernedgroup feels that the municipalityshould remove black bags that are notin the garbage bins as they lead to pol-lution if left behind.It should also take action against ille-
gal dumpers. If no one can catch theoffenders, then the rubbish that theyleave behind must at least be pickedup.“We hope that the fact that we have
cleaned up will make other residentsaware that they should not litter the si-dewalks and roads.The message that we want to send
out is that people must please notdump in open areas.First of all it is illegal, and what it
does to our town is disgusting,” Rebelocomplained.He noted that manymembers of the
public who were not involved in the

A horrifying accident involving aschool bus and vehicle claimed thelives of five people on Monday mor-ning, 20 April.
The accident took place on theroad between Welverdiend andKhutsong. A bus was deliveringschool children to Khutsong fromExt.5 when it collided with a silver-grey Renault sedan. ER24 parame-dics, along with other services, arri-ved on the scene and found the busand the light motor vehicle both ly-ing on the side of the road.The Renault had been completely
ripped open in the collision and therewere lifeless bodies lying inside the ve-hicle.
According to the police spokesper-son, Warrent Officer Moses Masoea,the deceased were four women and aman who all died at the scene. 118 pa-tients were taken to hospital for asses-sment and couselling. Most of the pa-tients were children who were on theirway to school. Paramedics from multi-ple services set up a staging area at thescene and began treating the patientsfor their injuries.The cause of the collision is not yet
established, but local authorities wereon the scene for further investigations.
According to the driver of the bustherewas a lot ofmist thatmorning andhe could not see clearly, but he wasaware of an oncoming vehicle.When the vehicle came closer he saw
it heading in his direction and attemp-ted to swerve to avoid a collision.The vehicle swerved to the side of the
bus and landed up under its frontwheels.
A case of reckless and negligencedriving, as well as culpable homici-de, have been opened.
One of the deceased women wasidentified as Palesa Shongoyi, thewife of Constable Shongoyi fromCarletonville Police Station. Her fa-mily and friends indicated at the ti-me of the newspaper going to printthat are devastated by the loss.

South Africa has recently been in tur-moil over issues that involve xeno-phobic attacks against foreign natio-nals.There has been a loud outcry from
society condemning such action andI would also like to speak out and saythis is completely wrong. This is notthe way to act towards our neighbou-ring brothers and sisters. I am happythat these actions that have spread inother areashavenot spurred the com-munity ofMerafong on to act in a simi-lar manner. I plead with the commu-nity not to stoop so low,with the inten-tion of destroying others. Instead offighting one another, we should be le-arningmore from each other and gro-wing through positive interactions.
I personally think that xenophobiais supported by thosewhohave givenupin life and fail to achieve what these fo-reign nationals do. These peoplemana-ge to prosper in South Africa, despitehaving come from faraway countries.They are innocent but are resented bylocals who have suffered through theirsocial conditions without their voicesbeing heard by their leaders.As I see it, we are only 21 years into
democracy and some South Africansstill have not been liberated from theirstate of mind and anger issues. We arestill at the point where the majority isilliterate, but there are many more peo-ple that still need to be educated. Thisis not just about attending educationalinstitutions, but about being educatedabout themselves as Africans. This is-sue is more about losing your identity
and developing some form of self-ha-tred. I hope our community will set anexample to others and live in harmonyandcherishourdiversity.Wehavea verylong way to go as a society and the roadtowards growth is paved by learning so-mething new.I, for one, amalways open to new cul-
tures and I havemetmany foreign natio-nalswhohave contributed to the personI amtoday. I have learnedsomuchabouthumanity from people from Tanzania,Ethiopia and Nigeria and I think it is aprivilege to findoutmoreaboutAfricanswho live in other areas. We should alsodevelop a culture of travel, getting toknow our beautiful continent and em-bracing its richness and heritage. I sayno to xenophobia because I am againstviolence and everything that does notcontribute the prosperity of this nation.
The time has come for Africa tounite for the benefit of the children.Regardless of what has torn us apart,we need to find a way forward. I pleadwith people to refrain from harmingothers and to fight fiercely against thisxenophobia that is leading our peopleastray.

come full of hatred and anger againstthose from other countries who live inour communities and who are alsopoor and fighting for the same things.Thepoverty thatwe continue to experi-ence 21 years after our independenceis caused by a capital system thatwants to keep us poor. The reasonwhyso many of us have no jobs is becauseour government has adopted policies
that favour the rich.It is not our brothers and sisters
from Malawi, Mozambique, Ethiopia,Somalia, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh andPakistan or anywhere else that are res-ponsible for us living in shacks, or inRDP houses without electricity, inade-quate water and proper streets. It isthe policies of GEAR, corrupt govern-ment officials, greedy capitalists andthe ANC government that has forgot-ten the poor in South Africa.
The poor from other countries thatnow live with us here in South Africaare escaping the same kind of oppres-sion, corruption and greedy officials.We must come together as communi-ties and put a stop to this now!Let us fight together against the capi-

Johanna Selemela from Khutsong atExt. 3 died of food poising at around09:00 on 2 April.
The victim was allegedly poisonedby her partner.Her son, Sam
Selemela told theHerald that hesaw his mothereating the pois-oned food andtried to warn hermany times.
On 1 April, hislate mother’spartner allegedlysent Sam to buy apoison known as“Hale Phirimi”,meaning “it doesnot set”. This is apopular poisonfor rats and is notuncommon for itto be used in sui-cide cases in theKhutsong com-munity.
During one in-stance, the sus-pect allegedlypoured poisonover leftovermeatand later offered it to her.
When her elder son, Tsikiso, poin-ted out that the meat had the same co-lour as “Hale Phirimi”, Johanna threwit away. The dog, who devoured whatwas left, died later in the evening.
After Johanna and Sam left for an
area called Marikana behind Khut-song Extension 3 she started feelingdizzy and began to shake. Sam ranback to Chris Hani to inform his bro-ther, but therewas no one at the shack.He then tried the suspect, who had
locked the door and said he was goingto hang himself.In desperation,Samblew awhist-le to try and at-tract attention,but there was noresponse.

By the timethat a group of pe-ople from JoeSlovo, a nearbysquatter camp inExt. 3 got to thescene, Johannawas already dead.The police foren-sics departmentcollected the bo-dy at around14:00 to conducta post-mortem.The body is still atthe government
mortuary in Roodepoort.Johanna’s niece, Maria Molebatsi,
says the family is struggling to findmo-ney to bury her in dignity.
The suspect was arrested and char-ged with murder and was in policecustody by printing time.

Residents of Blyvoor’s village were at the time of thenewspaper going to print not sure whether their waterwould be cut or not.For some years the municipality has not been able to
get payment for water out of Blyvoor. As more pressureis being put on municipalities to not run into huge arre-ars at other government institutions such as RandWateror Eskom, non-payers are having their water cut.Although the principle behind such cost-cutting meas-
ures is correct and easy to understand, there are otherissues in the community which our municipality wouldalso have to address.With regards to Blyvoor’s problems many people are
asking questions about whatmakes this residential areadifferent from the rest of Merafong. Many people knowthat residents with enough money in some areas are notpaying for services, and have as a result ran into arrearswith their accounts.Why are somepeople left when they are not payingwhi-
le other risk having their electricity and water cut?In the meantime issues relating to public money that
are not well-spent are also still coming up. In a recentreport by the Municipal Public Accounts Committee(MPAC), it for instance came to light that themunicipalityknows that it is not getting value for money from somecontractors.The municipality cannot only address financial pro-
blems in ways that suits certain officials and politicians.In order to keep our community stable, both financiallyand socially, all problems will have to be addressed andsolved.

Merafong City Local Municipality hasleft a pipeline open formonths, despiteat least one sinkhole having occurredthere in the past.
In January, the Herald reportedthat a pipeline on the side of BluebellStreet in Carletonville had been repai-red by a quick-thinking employee whodug up unused pipes next to Dolomite
Street when no other pipes could befound to repair a leak at the site. As faras could be determined at the time, asmall sinkhole had also appeared atthe site. If the problem had been leftunattended, large parts of Carletonvil-le’s Extension 8 and 9would have beenstuck without water.This week, however, observant
members of the public complainedthat, after several months, the pipeline
was still open. Some peo-ple staying near the pipe-line also reported that ithad never been closed.Residents fear that theopen pipeline could leadto another sinkhole for-ming at the site. Accor-ding to some residents inthe area, they were re-cently notified that thewhole pipeline would bedug up and replaced.
As a result of theseconcerns, the newspapercontacted the municipali-ty for answers.
“The line is not fullybackfilled because theclamps used to join the pi-pes are not the right size.
The correct size clampsare onbackor-der. The clamps that are there weretemporarily put in place so that the re-sidents would have a continued supplyofwater. Theworkdone in the areawas
to replace damaged pipelines. Oncethe right clamps have been installedthe line will be backfilled according tospecification,” the municipal spoke-sperson replied on Tuesday.

During the past week-and-a-half, resi-dents of Blyvooruitzicht town havebeen extremely worried about threatsthat the municipality might cut offtheir water any day now.
On 10 April one of Blyvoor’s provi-sional liquidators, Mr Leigh Roering,sent letters to all third party stakehol-ders at the mining town informingthem that Rand Water had been in-structed by the municipality’s attor-neys, De Swart Vogel Myambo, to ter-minate all water supply to the Blyvoorand Doornfontein villages.
“Rand Water has acknowledgedthis instruction and has confirmedthat theywill attend to the terminationaccordingly,” Roering stated in the let-ter.
In the letter by De Swart Vogel My-ambo, of which theHerald has a copy,they requested RandWater “to imme-diately terminate all water supply totheBlyvooruitzichtGoldMiningCom-pany on Wednesday, 15 April 2015”.
The attorneys stated thatBlyvoor’saccount was “in excess of R182 449205.94.”
When the Herald spoke to Roeringon Friday, 17 April, he said that, alt-hough the water had not yet been cut,this couldhappenatany time. Hesaid
some of the outstanding money datesback to four years ago when the minewas still owned by DRDGold. It is notclearwhy themunicipality hadnot actedearlier. Roering pointed out thatmonthly water accounts have not beenpaid recently because they amounted to“a couple of million rands a month”,whichdidnotmake sense because therehad been no mining operations at Bly-voor in more than a year.
“If you work it out a normal house-hold usually does not run up a water ac-
count of over R500 a month, giving usan overall account of about R2 millionper month, which we would not mindpaying. We just cannot afford the cur-rent bills, however.”
The attorney stated that the liquida-tors and other people currently mana-ging Blyvoor have been using variousmeans to try and figure out where thehugewater bills are coming from. In onesuch action this week, unemployed yo-uths were drawn in to walk from streetto street to look for problems like possi-
ble unseen leaks.As far as theHerald could determi-
ne, Blyvoor’s water supply has esca-ped being cut so far because of politi-cal intervention, possibly by the exe-cutive mayor, Ms Maphefo Mogale-Letsie.
According to the lawyers’ letter, themunicipality has stated that it wouldsupply water to residents by tankershould the water be cut.
At the time of going to print, it wasnot exactly certain how many peopleare currently staying in Blyvoor. Alt-hough some residents have movedout since the mine closed, others aresuspected to have taken in boardersto get extra money. None of Blyvoor’sformer mine workers, who make upmost of the town, have paid for servi-ces in theyear-and-a-half since themi-ne went into liquidation.
“We haven’t found a solution to thewater problems yet, but we will keepon trying,” Roering said on Tuesdayafternoon. “The water will only be cutafter due process and consultationwith all parties, including Govern-ment, have been followed. Blyvoorowes the municipality R191m. Thedetail of assistance to the residentswill be addressed in discussion withaffected parties,” the municipalspokesperson said on Tuesday.

Criminals who want to break into hou-ses are once again poisoning pet dogsin Carletonville.
“We feel the pain that our dogs suffe-red. I stayed with these dogs for yearsand one cannot just throw their bodiesaway as if they did not mean much,” adistraught Mr Andrew Poha of Bounda-ry Street told the Herald on Tuesdaymorning.
According to Poha, he was at workwhen a man who stayed in an outsideroom in his yard phoned him at about03:51 to tell him that one of his twodogs, called Bathu, was runningaround madly and vomiting.
Theman tried to doctor the dog withmedicine that he had at home and onlysaw later that the family’s other dog,“Soro”, was already lying dead at the ga-te.
By the time that Poha returned fromwork at about 06:00 the other dog hadalso died. By this time his neighbour,Mr John Lipolo, had noticed that histhree dogs had also been poisoned.
Poha says he recently noticed so-
meone putting a small stone in front ofhis gate.
Having some knowledge of security,Poha moved the stone into the street ashe suspected that itmight have been so-me marking left by thieves who weretargeting his home. Although he latersaw that the stone had been replaced,he was not sure what to do next and leftit there.
After the dogs were poisoned, bothPoha and Lipolo noticed more strangestones in front of their yards and sus-pected that whoever had poisoned theirdogs, were coming back to break intotheir houses.
“I want to warn other people to lookout for such signs,” Poha told the He-rald.
They also found a bag and paperwhere the thugswhohadpoisoned theirdogs had mixed the poison with meatbefore feeding it to the pets.
Poha has been staying in the streetfor the past ten years, but the thugs onlystarted breaking into their housesabout two years ago.
At the time of theHerald’s visit Policehad already been to the scene and were
investigating the incident.“There is certainly an increase indog
poisonings,”MsRenéViljoenof theCar-letonville SPCA told theHerald later theday. Most of the other poisonings hadtaken place in the area of Extension 9.
Viljoen says people who think thattheir dogs have been poisoned,must gi-ve them salt water, to make them vomitout thepoison, and force feed themacti-vated charcoal, as this binds the poisonin their stomachs.
They must also get Atropine from apharmacy and immediately take theirdogs to a veterinarian if they want to sa-ve them.
The best way to keep your dogs frombeing poisoned is to keep them insidethe house.
“People should never touch the poi-sonorplaceswhere thedogshave vomi-ted as the poison is also very dangerousto humans. They must disinfect suchareas in their yards with HTH or poolchlorine and let it stand for awhile befo-re washing it off. People whose dogs ha-ve been poisoned should always reportit to the police, even if nothing was sto-len from their houses,” she added.

Despite the fact that themunicipalityis suffering financially and someti-mes struggle to deliver all services,a fleet of brand new vehicles is cur-rently standing unused.
A municipal councillor, Mr VusiMcunana of the DA, notified thenewspaper on Thursday last weekthat more than 10 brand new truckswere parked on the side and behindthe Merafong City Municipality’ssupply chain offices in Canal Streetin Carletonville.
As far as could be determined, themunicipality had already acquiredthe trucks last year as part of a newfleet tender.
The trucks are allegedly being hi-red, each for several thousand randsper month, but could so far not be
used because municipal employeesneed public driver’s permits (PDP) todrive them.
The trucks are bigger than those thatwere previously hired and, therefore,require a special permit.
When the Herald visited the site, thegrass had already started to growaround the wheels of the stationarytrucks.
The newspaper put several questi-ons to themunicipality on Tuesday, on-ly some of which were answered.
In the meantime, several brand new,unused vehicles are parked at the mu-nicipality’s supply chain building.
The newspaperwanted to knowwhythey are not being used, where the mu-nicipality got them, what they are sup-posed to be used for and how long thevehicles have been standing there.
The municipality was also asked
whether the vehicleswere in fact rentedfrom a contractor and if so, what thelease per vehicle is.
The only answer forthcoming fromthe municipal spoke-sperson was that, “So-me of the drivers towhom the vehicles ha-ve been allocated cur-rently do not havePDP’s and are in theprocess of renewal.The process takes upto two months.
Six of the drivers inquestionhavebeenno-tified that their PDP’shave been approvedand that they need tofetch them before theend of the week. Thevehicles have been as-
signed to various sections and arebeing used for municipal businessby drivers with valid PDP’s from ti-me to time.

Anexciting three-day camp for stu-dents took place at Abe Bailey nearKhutsong from 25 to 27 March.
Learners from Winile Seconda-ry School in Kathlehong receivedthe opportunity to learn moreabout Merafong’s nature and wild-life. Alex Mputle presented the his-tory of Abe Bailey Nature reserve,after which there were story-tellingactivities and a walk to the cave.Robert Miya, Mbongeni Shabangu,Olga Mahlangu and Mahaltse Mo-lete joined Maputle in a talk on en-vironmental issues and a team
from Rand Water discussed the issueof being water-wise.
Reverend Justice Ramoba chat-ted to the learners about moral rege-neration, followed by other leader-ship presentations and a snake de-monstration. The Tshepo ThembaDevelopment Centre from Khutsongalso participated in the programme.
The camp was concluded with re-creational activities, a career talkand study skills before the studentshad to pack their belongings and pre-pare for departure.
The learners were unanimous thatthe camp was both informative andenjoyable.

People who walk on a sidewalk at theFochville Taxi Rank must watch theirstep to stay clear of a dangerous openelectrical box.
A concerned resident recently con-tacted the newspaper after she noticedthe open box while visiting the liquorstore next to which it is situated.
“The box is really dangerous as it iscompletely open with live electrical wi-res inside. What will happen if rain fallson it or if someone is electrocuted whenthey urinate near it?” the resident won-dered. The resident said that she hadspoken to a business owner in the area,who indicated that they had contactedthe municipality about the problem be-fore.
When the Herald visited the site lastweek, the back of the electrical box wasstill completely open. At the front of thebox, a bent cover was partially closingthe box. The live wires inside the boxcould, however, still clearly be seen.
“The box has been open for about amonth and we do not feel safe walkingpast it. Some of the people walking pasthere are intoxicated. What will happenif someone walks into the box by mista-ke?” one of the concerned bystanders,
Mr Ishmail Mosige, wondered.“The municipality has noticed the
box and it will be attended to immedia-tely,” a municipal spokesperson an-sweredonquestions sent to it about theproblem on Tuesday.

Relebogile High School fell victim tovandalism on 13 and 14 April when agroup of lear-ners damagedthe gate and bro-ke windows.
The incidenttook place du-ring schoolhours on Mon-day and Tuesdaywhen the youths,who are appa-rently involvedin gangsterism,attacked theschool.
They startedtheir raid by des-troying the school’s second main gateto get in after the security had closedthe gates and locked them out.
According to information received,some of the learners did not want to at-tend a p
arade at the start of school at 07:00.The students were also protestingagainst wearing school uniforms. Ac-cording to school rules, learners mustwear school uniform and look presen-
table when they at-tend classes, whichstart at 08:00.
The culprits en-tered the buildingand stoned win-dows before run-ning away.
“The young menhave not yet beenidentified and it isunclear if they wanteducation or not,”said Steve Maru-mule a communityleader, who is con-
cerned about the situation after a yo-ung man from the school was stabbed.
The school has been affected bygangsterism and there are few scholarswho are trying to cause trouble at theschool.
Students from Khutsong highschools are reported to be associatedwith several gangster groups in Khuts-ong such as the Casanovas, Creaturesand Garenjas.Children from as young as 14 are
known to be in gangster-related crimi-nal activities in Khutsong.Steve told theHerald that the situati-
on is worsened by parents who do notwant to attend meetings when invited.
“The school and the community ha-ve to work together to combat such is-sues,” he said. Marumule still has tomeet with Khutsong’s high schools todiscuss such issues before the MEC ofEducation, Panyaza Lesufi, can ad-dress the situation.

Jypraat en praat maar niks gebeur nie.Ek voel sommer lus om my huis hierte verkoop,” het die hoogs ontstoke in-woner Maandag aan die Herald vertel.Met die Herald se besoek aan die
straat het daar nie net ’n hoop swart-sakke voor die een hoekerf gelê nie,maar was sommige sypaadjies heelte-mal toe onder takke en ander tuinvul-lis.Intussen was gras op ‘n stuk van die
sypaadjie só lank dat ‘n oopmangat by-
kans heeltemal versteek was. Op ‘n an-der plek was een van die betonblokkevan ‘n stormwater-afvoersloot aan diekant van die pad weg.Gras by die elektriese substasie in
die straat was ook baie lank en die teerhet op plekke begin lig en hobbels opdie padoppervlak gemaak soos watboomwortels onder dit groei. ‘n Grootgat was ook in die teer op die stuk padwat na die oorkant van Hoërskool Car-letonville lei, te sien. Nog tuinvullis isook langs dié stuk pad afgelaai.“Die vullisverwyderingsafdeling het
aangedui dat hulle ondersoek sal instelna die dat mense gemors gooi en ver-brand. Die nodige aksie sal teen hullegeneem word. Die water en sanitasie-afdeling sal die bewerings van verlore

Unsettled symbols fromstreet names to statues seem to gatherappeals to confront ‘real’ problems.The good in this situation then is to befound in answering the question of howto reimagine/recontextualise/replacestatues and put them in a permanentlyunstable state that provokes contestati-on rather than unity. After all, contesta-tion and not unity is what lies at the he-art of democracy.
Statues and memorials can be sitesthat can perhaps provoke public eng-agement with general concerns if theyare carefully reinterpreted to do so. Thechoice we are faced with is do we wanta static monolithic memorial landscape(removing statues produces the samestasis) or do we want a memorial land-scape that provokes us to discuss anddebate and demand that general con-cerns are taken up. This is a huge chal-lengebut there is no shortage of potenti-al contributors who can participate intransforming the controversy aroundstatues into a vital agora for a countrythat is deeply in need of one vis a vis thespreadofprivatisationandcriminalisa-tion in the public arena.
Dr. Goodrich is a lecturer at theNWU-Pukke in Social Anthopologywhere he also chairs the subjectgroup
years ago. While two small groups voci-ferously defended the outgoing namesor their proposed replacements, themajority, from civics organisations tothe white middle class felt the exercisewas a waste of money that could be bet-ter spent on ‘real’ issues. While thereare unavoidable practical reasons to fixstreet names, there are no such reasonsto fix statues. My interest, therefore, isin keeping this open situation open.
The trouble with statues and memo-rials is that they tend to close the sym-bolic order. Once they are up on theirpedestals they have the effect of concre-tising one particular story, of fixing instone, so to speak, one version of thepast. Stories about the past do not sim-ply tell us where we come from, they al-so tell us where we belong and wherewe should be headed. In other words,stories about the past influence how weunderstand our present and imagineour future.
South Africa’s memorial landscape isunfortunately one that has concretisedthe social divisions of the colonial andapartheid orders by fixing a monolithicstory in terms of which past regimesjustified the many lines of separationand inequality we continue to strugglewith. Leaving the statues as they are,therefore, closes the open situation inamanner that enclosesour ideasofwhowe are, how we relate to one another,and how we are going to move aheadwithin the horizons of the symbolic or-der that gave us the divisions and di-scriminations we want to get beyond.This is not an option. Replacing themwith statues of a new catalogue of natio-nal heroes closes the open situation infavour of a new order. This is not an op-tion either as it risks creating the im-pression thatSouthAfricahas transfor-med when we, in fact, have a long wayto go.Simply removing themandnot re-placing them seems more sensible, butthe cost here is still that the open situa-tion the statue controversy has given uswill close and participation in the pu-blic realm will dissipate.
So the challenge before us is to figureout how we can replace/reimagine sta-tues in a way that enables them to keepthe open situation open. Unstable sta-tues seem to make people uncomforta-
es of colonial and apartheid figures re-moved, the other wanting them to re-main. I think it is safe to say that mostSouth Africans, by contrast, have nostrong feelings one way or another,most think of statues as irrelevant.
Slavoj Zizek begins Tarrying with theNegative with the image of the Romani-an flagwaving after the fall ofCeausescuwith the star, the symbol of the commu-nist past cut out, leaving only a hole inthe middle of the flag where the starused to be. He invokes this image to dis-cuss the open situation, a situation inwhich one symbolic order has fallenand no new one has risen yet to take itsplace. My contention is that the open si-tuation is desirable and for that reasonwe need to take both of these minoritiesseriously – regardless of how much wemight like or dislike them or how muchwe may be tempted to mock or dismissthem.
This is why I find the majority attitu-de that statues are irrelevant particu-larly disappointing. The most commonresponse seems to be that peopleshould focus on ‘real’ issues, like pover-ty, inequality, environmental problems,state corruption, crime and so on. Thisis obviously a logically bankrupt argu-ment as it implies we suspend everyt-hing and focus on the ‘real’ issues whileignoring who gets to set up the list of ‘re-al’ issues. But to simply dismiss it asa bad argument is boring and misses auseful insight, namely that this respon-se shows the potential latent in the opensituation created by the statue contro-versy.
Most of those calling for people toengage in ‘real’ issues and leave the sta-tues alone do not daily call for action onthese serious issues.However, a contestin the realm of heritage and symbol hasprovoked them to do just that, evenChumani Maxwele’s opening salvo onRhodes gathered the sanitation crisis inKhayelitsha to the controversy. This in-dicates that statues and memorials,when destabilised, have the power toprovoke and gather up public concernsabout important material issue facedby South Africans generally. The sameresponse characterised the controversythat sprung up amid the proposedstreet-name changes in Potchefstroom
In 2014 Tokolos Stencils, a Cape Town-based group of graffiti activists sprayedthe words ‘Disown this heritage’ in redacross the base of Cape Town’s PaulKruger Statue.
The point that they were trying tomake was that while statues of Krugerand other colonial figures might repre-sent white South Africans’ heritage,black South Africans’ heritage is groun-ded in a protracted struggle against the-se figures and the social and politicalorder they signify.
It was, however, Chumani Maxwele’semptying of a bucket of human faecesonto the Rhodes statue on the Universi-ty of Cape Town’s upper campus on 9March 2015 and the ensuing media co-verage of the Rhodes Must Fall Move-ment’s successful campaign to haveRhodes removed from UCT that hasbrought statues to the centre of a muchbroader discussion of contemporarySouth Africa. The Anglo Boer War me-morial in Uitenhage was spectacularlynecklaced on 2 April. On 7 April, thePaul Kruger statue in Pretoria’s ChurchSquare was spattered with paint andPort Elizabeth’s horse memorial wasbroken with a sledgehammer. On 10April, it was Queen Victoria’s turn. Herstatue in Port Elizabeth was doused ingreenpaint. It seemsas if people all overSA have responded to Tokolos Sten-cils’s call to disown the heritage thesestatues represent.
Of course, there are those who havefelt the need in this period to take ow-nership of this heritage. Sunette Brid-ges and Steve Hofmeyr were at the fore-front of a defence of what they see astheirheritage.Bridges ratherunconvin-cingly chained herself to one of theChurch Square statues, sparking anavalanche of ’50 shades of khaki’ me-mes on social media while Hofmeyr de-livered a speech talking up the impor-tance of history to a true civilization.Setting aside the comedy of the chai-ning, of Hofmeyr’s penchant for mala-propisms (his condemnation of the ‘de-flowering’ of his heritage) and of theirsupporters smilingly holding their pla-cards upside down on the front page ofBeeld newspaper and we have a matterof some concern. Two relatively smallactivistic minorities, one wanting statu-

Die veldtog teen koloniale en apart-heidstandbeelde het so skielik mo-mentum gekry dat dit die publiek endie regering onkant gevang het. Aandie begin van 2014 het die Ministervan Kuns en Kultuur, Nathi Mthethwa,Suid-Afrikaners verseker dat stand-beelde uit die apartheidsera nie ver-wyder sou word nie. Hy het gesê diesimbole is deel van ons geskiedenis –deel van ons as nasie. “Sommige kanongemaklik voel oor sekere simbole,maar watter nasie gaan ons wees in-dien ons vergeet waar ons vandaankom?”
Skaars ‘n jaar later was die veldtogvir die verwydering van Rhodes sestandbeeld op die kampus van dieUniversiteit van Kaapstad, die vonk indie kruitvat wat gelei het tot die sken-ding van verskeie standbeelde op ver-skillende plekke in die land.
Standbeelde as kulturele simbole is‘n emosionele aangeleentheid. Aan dieeen kant is daar groepe mense watdaarop aandring dat standbeelde wataan die meerderheid van die bevol-king aanstoot gee, verwyder moetword. Hierdie groepe verbind die ver-wydering van koloniale en apartheidsimbole aan eise om transformasievan die samelewing. Aan die anderkant is daar groepe, veral onder Afri-kaners, wat die standbeelde as be-langrike simbole van hul kultuurerfe-nis beskou en planne beraam om diestandbeelde teen beskadiging en ver-
wydering te beskerm. Hulle beskoudie veldtog teen die standbeelde as ‘naanslag op hul kulturele identiteit.Die standbeeldeveldtog en die reaksiedaarop het die hoë vlakke van frustra-sie en konflikpotensiaal in die Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing gedemon-streer.
Omdat die kwessie polities gemoti-veer is en soveel emosies gaandemaak, is dit moeilik vir die owerhedeom dit te hanteer. Die beweging vir dieverwydering van die standbeelde gaanwaarskynlik al sterker word, maar ditkan ook mettertyd stoom verloor. Minmense in Suid-Afrika is bereid om virRhodes, as verteenwoordiger van im-perialisme en kolonialisme, in diebresse te tree. Maar wat van Jan vanRiebeeck, Paul Kruger, Louis Bothaen Jan Smuts? Waar gaan die streepgetrek word? Wie gaan besluit wie die“kolonialiste” en “rassiste” is, wie sestandbeelde verwyder moet word? In-dien vandag se idees oor menseregteop die leiers van die verlede toegepasword, sal min van hulle die toetsslaag. Wat gaan in die toekoms ge-beur? Indien die ANC moontlik een-dag onttroon word, gaan al die Man-dela-beelde verwyder word?
Die standbeeldeveldtog is nie uniekaan Suid-Afrika nie. Soortgelyke ak-sies het plaasgevind in ander landewaar daar politieke oorgang van eenbewind na ‘n ander was. Verwisselingvan politieke maghebbers word dik-
wels gevolg deur pleknaamverande-rings en die verwydering van die ou re-gime se simbole. Dit is selfs nie dieeerste keer dat standbeelde in Suid-Afrika geskend word nie, onder meerdeur Afrikaners. Dit het byna ‘n eeugelede met die Du Plessis-standbeeldin Stellenbosch gebeur en onlangsmet die standbeeld van ‘n swart tradi-sionele leier in Limpopo.
Daar was die afgelope weke wisse-lende reaksie op die standbeelde-veldtog. Daar is gevra of dit nie Suid-Afrikaners verder polariseer en diedroom van die reënboognasie finaalsal kelder nie. Daar is geredeneer datdie verwydering van gedenktekens tognie die gebeure van die verlede onge-daan kan maak nie. Ook word argu-menteer dat die verwydering van sim-bole niks help om die steeds bena-deeldes in die samelewing se lotenigsins te verbeter nie. Sommiges re-deneer dat die standbeelde as ‘n steendes aanstoots vir die voorheen onder-druktes uit die openbare oog moetverdwyn. Ander meen dat dit ‘n ernsti-ge skending van minderheidsgroepese regte sal wees en ‘n teken dat diedemokrasie in Suid-Afrika misluk.
Hoe kan die kwessie ontlont word?Rasionele mense voer aan dat ‘n open-bare debat hieroor nodig is.
Daar is die gevaar dat dit emosiesnog meer gaande sal maak en net deurekstreme groepe uitgebuit sal wordom hul onversoenbare standpunte te
propageer. Dit iswel belangrik datgematigde stem-me gehoor worden nie deur ek-streme oproepeverswelg wordnie. Die aangewe-se strategie iswaarskynlik omnou, terwyl emo-sies gaande is,maatreëls te trefom die standbeelde tydelik te be-skerm teen vandalisme.
Wanneer die stof gaan lê, sal proak-tief opgetree moet word om ‘n herha-ling van die veldtog te voorkom. In dielanger termyn is die oplossing om,naas die bestaande simbole uit ‘n ver-lede wat deur witmense gedomineeris, openbare simbole daar te stel watverteenwoordigend is van die totaleSuid-Afrikaanse bevolking.
Die skending of verwydering vanstandbeelde sal altyd aggressiewe re-aksie by ‘n deel van die bevolking uit-lok. Die skepping van nuwe simbole,daarenteen, kan dalk iewers in dieverre toekoms bydra om die droomvan die reënboognasie te laat reali-seer. Dit is tog beter om op te bou asaf te breek, of hoe?

ViskerrieBraai 2 uie (in skywe gesny) in olie en
voeg by: kerrieblare (gestroop van 1stingel), 3 groen brandrissies (oorlangsmiddeldeur gesny), 5ml elk mosterd-saad, fenegriek en komynsaad en braaivir 5 minute. en 5ml sout in ’n groot mengbak. Voegongeveer 440ml kookwater by om ’nstywe deeg te vorm. Knie liggies en ver-deel in 3. Rol elk uit tot ’n groot vier-kant. gemaak van die rugbyfeesvieringe byJeppe High school se Easter Festivalwat vanaf 4 tot 6 April gehou is.Llewellyn het in drie wedstryde ge-
speel en het telkens punte aangeteken.Hy speel verkieslik senter, maar word
ook soms as vleuel ingespan.Sy rugbyloopbaanhet begin toehy vir
die o/7-span by Laerskool Jongspangespeel het, waarvoor hy vandag steedsgroot waardering het vir die rugbyken-nis wat hy daar opgedoen het onder diebekwame leiding van mnr. Leon Stryd-om.Vir die afgelope twee jaar het hy baie
eer vir sy afrigters, S.P. Botha, ChrisLewis en “OomPatrick” wat hulle Leeu-span elke Vrydag afrig.Sy broer Richardo het ook groot in-
