Occupant protection has been the focusof much private and public research anddevelopment for many years. The seatbelts are incorporated into the vehiclesolely for the protection of theoccupants. The safety belts can protectyou and your passengers only if they areused. The safety belt information includedhere is intended for vehicle occupantsof adult size and for older children whohave outgrown booster seats.Be sure that if children are too small tobe well restrained by the safety beltsystem, that they are secured in anappropriate child restraint.
ALWAYS WEAR YOURSAFETY BELTS*
Safety belts are helpful for severaldistinct reasons:
1) Safety belts attach the occupants tothe vehicle so that they will not beejected during an accident.
2) Safety belts attach the occupant tothe vehicle so that they can use thespace between their pre-crashseating position and the front of thevehicle to slow down to a stop moregradually, as their safety beltsstretch and the front end of thevehicle absorbs the energy of thecrash by crumpling.
3) Safety belts keep the driver in hisseat, so that the driver might have achance to regain control in certainaccident situations.
4) Safety belts keep occupants frombeing catapulted into and injuringthe driver and other occupants.
Why Wear Safety Belts?
22 Seats & Restraints
Warning
• Safety belts have been shown tobe the single most effectiveprotection against injury or deathin a vehicular accident!
• As the owner and driver of yourvehicle, you must make certainthat each occupant is properlywearing the safety belt provided atthe seating position.
• Pregnant women, injured, andphysically impaired personsshould also wear safety belts. Likeall other occupants, they are morelikely to suffer serious injury ordeath, if they do not do so.
• The best way to protect the foetusis to protect the mother.
Warning
• Why safety belts work, how towear them, and how to adjust yourseat posi t ion properly, isexplained in this section. Read allof the information provided andalways observe these instructionsand warnings in order to gain thefull benefit of these safetysystems.
Safety belts cannot work unless they areworn and worn properly.
Vehicle occupants are injured if theforces applied to the body’s structuresare greater than the body can toleratewithout being injured. If a person’sbody is stopped abruptly, the forcesapplied to the body will be high, whereas if the body is slowed downgradually over some distance, theforces will be much lower. Thus, inorder to protect an occupant from injuryin a crash, the idea is to give the personas much time and distance as possible incoming to a stop.
Imagine a person running at 15 milesper hour (25 km/h) head first into aconcrete wall. Imagine a second personrunning at 15 miles per hour into a wallcovered by a 3-foot (90 cm) thickdeformable cushion. In the firstinstance the person could be seriouslyinjured or even killed. In the second, therunner could expect to walk away
How Safety Belts Work*
23Seats & Restraints
uninjured. Why? In the first instance, the body hit the non-yielding concretesurface and stopped immediately. All ofthe energy the sprinter built up wasabsorbed by the structures of the body, not by the non-yielding concretesurface. In the second example, thebody had exactly the same amount ofenergy that had to be absorbed as in thefirst example, but it continued to moveinto the padding, giving the bodyadditional time and distance to slowdown to a complete stop as the paddingabsorbed the sprinter’s energy bydeforming.
If a car crashes into a concrete wall at 30miles per hour (50 km/h), the frontbumper of the car stops immediately, but the passenger compartment stopsmore gradually as the front structure ofthe vehicle crumples. The beltedoccupant is held to the seat and gainsthe advantage of the cushion providedby the crumpling of the front of thevehicle and the stretching of the safetybelt webbing. That belted occupant’sbody slows down from 50 km/h (30
mph) to zero over a distance of 90-120cm (3-4 feet). That belted occupant alsoremains properly positioned so that, ifthe air bag (if provided) deploys in afrontal collision, the occupant mightnever strike any rigid structures in thevehicle. The unbelted occupantreceives no such benefit. The unbeltedperson is not attached to the vehicle andso that person continues to travel at thevehicle’s pre-crash speed of 30 milesper hour (50 km/h) until striking a hardobject at approximately 30 miles perhour (50 km/h) and stopping abruptly.Even in a frontal collision in which theair bag (if provided) deploys, theunbelted front seat occupant remains atgreater risk of serious injury or deaththan the properly restrained front seatoccupant.
Warning
SAFETYBELTS PROTECT
WEARING THE SAFETYBELT
Accident statistics show that driversand passengers properly wearingsafety belts have a lower risk ofbeing injured and a higher chance ofsurviving an accident. For thisreason, wearing a safety belt islegally required in most countries.
Each front seat and each outboardrear seat of your CHEVROLETvehicle is equipped with a three-point safety belt system that isanchored at three locations. All frontand rear seat belts are stored andlocked by a retractor mechanism. When set in its normal emergencylocking mode, the three-point safetybelt requires no length adjustmentand allows freedom of movementwhen the vehicle moves at constantspeeds.
(Continued)
Warning
However in a sudden or strong stop,or during heavy acceleration ordeceleration, the safety belt will lockautomatically to restrain the body.
In order to gain the full benefit of asafety belt, you must wear itcorrectly and position yourselfcorrectly within your seat, asfollows:
• (not reclined, toprevent you from “submarining”or slipping out from under thesafety belt, and injuring vulnera-ble body parts in a crash.)
• (notslouched, to properly position thelap and shoulder portions of thesafety belt for maximum restraintand minimum injury to soft andvulnerable parts of your body in acrash)
(Continued)
Seatback upright
Occupant sitting upright
Warning
•(if
the safety belt is not securelylatched, it cannot provide anyprotection; pull on the belt tomake sure it is secure)
•
(not abdomen where the restrain-ing belt could cause serious injuryi n a c r a s h – T H I S I SPARTICULARLY IMPORTANTFOR PREGNANTWOMEN)
•
(notunder an arm, around your neck, over an inside shoulder or behindyour back, and not loose withslack allowing excessive forwardmovement and injury in a crash)
(Continued)
Safety belt latch plate and bucklesecurely fastened with a “click”
Lap portion of safety belt snugand low on hips and bony pelvis
Shoulder portion of the safetybelts over your outside shoulderand snug against the chest
Warning
•(do not allow more than one
person in a safety belt; multiplepeople in a single safety belt canexceed the capacity of the safetybelts and people sharing a safetybelt can cause crushing and otherinjuries to each other in a crash)
• (in acrash the forces are too great for anadult to hold onto a child and theadult will crush the child if theyshare the same safety belt)
• (occu-pants not wearing a safety belt arean injury threat to themselves andto other occupants in the vehiclebecause in a crash they become afree-flying body that will strikeother persons in their path)
(Continued)
Only one occupant per one safetybelt
Children in secure child seats
No unbelted occupants
24 Seats & Restraints
25Seats & Restraints
Warning
• No twisted safety belts (twistedsafety belts will not move freelyand restrain properly and can cutinto the occupants rather thanspread the force, thus increasingthe risk of injury and death)
• Lock doors (unlocked doorsincrease the risk of injury anddeath from external impacts andejection in a crash)
Warning
• Make periodic checks (whileriding in the vehicle, check fromtime to time to be sure that the lapportion of the belt is snugly acrossthe hips and has not ridden uparound the waist and that theshoulder portion is midway overthe shoulder and across the chest;properly positioned belts allowthe stronger structures of the hipsand shoulders to absorb the forcesof the belt against the body, whileimproperly positioned belts maycause neck injury or injury to thevulnerable organs in the abdomi-nal area).
• No hard or breakable objects, between safety belts and bodyparts (objects such as pens, glasses, etc. in the occupant’spocket or on the cloth can causeinjury in the event of a collision)
(Continued)
Warning
• Improper use of a safety belt cancause serious injury. Do notmodify the safety belt. Do not addany device which would affect theoperation of the safety belt.
• Before you close the door, makesure the safety belt is out of theway. Otherwise, the belt and/or thevehicle body could be damaged.
Warning
If the safety belt goes over an armrest(if so equipped), lap portion of thesafety belt could force the occupant’sabdomen, not the bony pelvis, in acollision.
• Be sure that the safety belt goesunder the armrests.
Failure to follow this can result ininjuries or even death in case of acollision.
26 Seats & Restraints
Each front seat is equipped withadjustable seat and seatback withheight-adjustable head restraint andthree point lap-and-shoulder safetybelts.
The rear seat is equipped with twooutboard seating positions featuringthree-point lap-and-shoulder safetybelts and a center seat equipped with alap safety belt.
To help reduce the risk of personalinjury in collisions or suddenmanoeuvres, your CHEVROLETvehicle is equipped with three-pointsafety belts. The two front seats and thetwo outboard rear seating positions areeach equipped with three-point safetybelts. These safety belts are eachanchored in three locations to restrainpassengers who are properly positionedand wearing the safety belt.
REAR SEAT OCCUPANTS
THREE-POINT SAFETYBELTS
FRONT SEAT OCCUPANTS
Athree-point safety belt set in the ELR /WLR (Emergency Locking Retractor /Webbing Locking Retractor) moderequires no length adjustment andallows the freedom of body movementwhen the vehicle moves at a constantspeed.
However, in the event of a sudden orstrong stop, or during heavyacceleration or deceleration, the safetybelt will lock automatically to restrainthe body.
Always fasten your safety beltscorrectly:
1. Close and lock the doors.
2. Make sure seatback is upright.
3. Pick up the safety belt latch plateand use it to pull the belt across yourbody. Make sure the belt is nottwisted. If the safety belt locks asyou are pulling it out, allow it torewind into the retractor. Pull thesafety belt out again to acomfortable and secure length.
27Seats & Restraints
4. Position the shoulder belt midwayover the shoulder and across thechest. Never place the shoulder beltacross the neck. This assures that inthe case of a collision, the beltapplies force to the shoulder bonesand keeps the impact away fromribs or neck, helping to avoidserious internal injuries.
5. Wear the lap belt low and snug onthe hips, not the waist. This assuresthat in the case of a collision, thebelt applies force to the pelvicbones and not the abdomen, helpingto avoid serious injuries.
6. Push the latch plate firmly into thebuckle until the mechanism clicks.Make sure you are using the properbuckle. Be sure to position therelease button on the buckle so youcan unbuckle the safety belt quicklyif necessary.
7. Pull up on the latch plate to makesure it is secure.
To remove the safety belt, press therelease button on the buckle. Thebelt will retract automatically.Guide the safety belt as it retracts toprevent the latch plate fromdamaging interior surfaces orinjuring occupants.
Maintain your safety belts:
1. Periodically inspect all safety belts,related parts, and assemblies. Havet h e s e r e p l a c e d b y y o u rCHEVROLET retailer if any safetybelts, assemblies or related parts aredamaged.
2. You must replace any safety belt orrelated part that has been stretchedor damaged in an accident, even ifthe stretching or damage is notobvious or visible. Stretched beltsand damaged parts do not performeffectively. Replacement of safetybelts must be with new belts only.
3. CHEVROLET recommendsreplacing the entire safety beltassembly after your vehicle hasbeen in a collision. If yourCHEVROLET retailer finds that nosafety belt damage has occurred andthat everything is in proper workingorder, you need not make anyreplacement.

Failure to make appropriate repairsmay result in additional damage toyour vehicle or personal injuries.
PREGNANT WOMEN ANDSAFETY BELTS
Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women.
Like all occupants, pregnant women aremore likely to be seriously injured ifthey do not wear safety belts. Inaddition, when a safety belt is wornproperly, it is more likely that theunborn child will be safe in a crash.
To provide maximum protection, apregnant woman should wear a three-point safety belt. She should wear thelap portion of the belt as low as possiblethroughout her pregnancy.

AIR BAG SYSTEM (OPTION)
Your vehicle is equipped with an air bagsupplemental restraint system (SRS)designed to protect properly seated andrestrained front seat occupants. Boththe driver and front passenger seatingpositions are equipped with driver andpassenger air bags and side air bags (ifso equipped), in addition to three-pointsafety belts and other safety features. Each air bag is specially packed in amodule, from which the air bag isdesigned to inflate and deploy atextremely high speed and force in theevent your vehicle is involved in certaintypes of collisions which pose a highrisk of serious injury or death to thedriver and passengers.
Warning
If handled improperly the airbagsystems can be triggered in anexplosive manner.
The driver should sit back as far aspossible while still maintainingcontrol of the vehicle. If you aresitting too close to the airbag, it cancause death or serious injury when itinflates.
For maximum safety protection in alltypes of crashes, all occupantsincluding the driver should alwayswear their safety belts to minimizethe risk of severe injury or death inthe event of a crash. Do not sit or leanunnecessarily close to the airbagwhile the vehicle is in motion.
The air bag may cause facial or bodyscratch, injury by broken glasses orgetting a burn by explosion while airbag is deployed.
Warning
The airbag systems and belt tensionercontrol electronics are located in thecenter console area. Do not put anymagnetic objects in this area.
Do not stick anything on the airbagcovers and do not cover them withother materials. Each airbag is triggered only once.Have deployed airbags replaced byCHEVROLET retailer workshop.Do not make any modifications to theairbag system as this will invalidatethe vehicle type approval. In the event of airbag deploymenthave the steering wheel, theinstrument panel, all paneling parts, the door seals, the handles and theseats removed by CHEVROLETretailer workshop. When an air bag deploys, there maybe a loud noise and smoke. Theseconditions are normal and are notdangerous but in case it may irritateskin of the passenger. If the irritationis continued, contact a doctor.

Danger
Never allow children or infants andpregnant women and the old and theweak sit in the front passenger seatsfitted with airbags.
Furthermore, do not drive with a babyseat fitted thereon. In case of anaccident, the impact from the inflatedairbag can cause facial injury ordeath.
Caution
If the vehicle is impacted by bumpsor objects on unpaved roads orsidewalks, the air bag may inflate.Drive slowly on the surfaces notdesigned for vehicle traffic toprevent unintended air bag deploy-ment.

Warning
Air bags are only a supplementalrestraint, and are most effective incombination with safety belts.
All occupants, including the driver, should always wear their safety belts, whether or not an air bag is alsoprovided at their seating position, tominimize the risk of severe injury ordeath in the event of a crash.
• Air bags do not deploy in side orrear collisions. Occupants notwearing their safety belts will notbe protected by any restraintsystem, resulting in severe injuriesor death in these types ofcollisions.
• Occupants who are not properlywearing their safety belts may bethrown forward by braking beforeimpact, placing their bodies nearor against the air bag modules. This can cause severe injury fromthe force of an air bag’sdeployment.

How air bags work
Air bags are designed to keep yourhead, neck, and chest from slamminginto the instrument panel, steeringwheel or windshield in a front-endcrash. They are not designed to inflatein rear-end or rollover crashes or inmost side-impact crashes. Your air bagsare designed to deploy in crashes thatare equivalent to, or exceed the force ofa vehicle traveling at a speed of 15 to23 km/h (9.3 ~ 14.3 mph) crashing intoa solid immovable wall.
The air bag system activates druing asevere collision which is either frontalor when the impact angle is up to 30°from straight ahead.
This crash severity level at which the airbag will deploy was selected to assureinflation of air bags in our vehicles at orbelow the crash severity at which astatistical risk of death begins forfrontal collisions.
In the real world, cars rarely crashsquarely into immovable walls; air bagsmost often deploy when a vehiclecollides with another vehicle. Theactual speed at which the air bags willinflate may be higher in the real world, because real-world accidents usuallyinvolve more complicated multi-vehicle impacts, angled impacts, andincomplete frontal impacts (e.g.sideswipes), and because the objectstruck is usually not immovable.
Note
An air bag can also inflate inmoderate to severe non-collisionsituations (e.g., slamming theundercarriage or other solidcomponent of the vehicle in a dip inthe driving surface) where the crashsensors generate a signal equivalentto a crash into a solid immovablebarrier at 15 to 23 km/h (9.3 ~ 14.3mph).
35Seats & Restraints
Air bags inflate when a sensor detects afront-end crash of a severity sufficientfor air bag deployment. The crashsensor sends an electric signal to initiatethe air bag’s inflation. A propellant isignited which rapidly burns inside theair bag module, producing enoughnitrogen gas to fully inflate the air bag.The chemical process and nitrogen gasare harmless to the vehicle’s occupants.Within 0.045 seconds of the crashdetection, the pressure of the inflatingair bag splits open the plastic trimcovering on the module, which is scoredon the inside surface to allow the trim ofthe steering wheel hub or passenger-side instrument panel to split openunder force.
The air bag fully inflates to create asurface that can catch the forwardmovement of the front occupant’s headand upper torso. As the occupant comesinto contact with the air bag, the gas inthe bag empties through holes at thebase of the bag to soak up the force fromthe occupant’s forward movement.
Note
Air bags cannot smother you andthey don’t restrict your movement.Air bags have vents, so they deflateimmediately after cushioning you.
The entire process, from initial contactthrough the air bag’s inflation anddeflation, occurs within 0.2 seconds, faster than the blink of an eye. Becausethe collision is over in a fraction of asecond, and vehicles involved in anaccident usually come to the final pointof rest only one or two seconds afterinitial contact, the supplementalrestraint system must sense the crashand cause the air bags to deploy nearlyinstantaneously to protect the vehicle’soccupants.
After the air bag deflates, you maynotice a burning smell, smoke, andwhite powder in the interior of thevehicle. This is normal. The burningsmell is from the propellant that wasignited to inflate the airbag. The whitepowder is cornstarch or talcum orsodium compounds which lubricate theair bag to reduce friction on the air bagduring storage and inflation. Althoughthey may cause some skin or eyeirritation, these substances are not toxic.
After The Air Bag Deploys
36 Seats & Restraints
Warning
• Do not drive your vehicle after oneor more air bags have deployed.
• Do not try to repair, alter, ordispose of the air bag yourself.
• Air bags are installed under highpressure with sophisticated crashsensing and air bag inflatingsystems. Allowing an untrainedand unauthorized person to handlean air bag can lead to seriousinjuries and death.
• Contact your dealer immediatelyif either of your vehicle’s air baghas deployed, if damage occurs toyour vehicle at or near either of theair bag modules, or if you believefor any reason that the operatingcondition of either air bag hasbeen impaired.
Driving a vehicle after an air bag hasdeployed without authorized servicecan result in severe injuries anddeath.
Your Supplemental Restraint System(SRS) is virtually maintenance free.
However, if any of the followingoccurs, have your SRS servicedimmediately by an authorized dealer.
• Any of your air bags have deployed.
• The air bag warning lamp indicatesmalfunction.
SRS Servicing
Vehicle occupants are usually injured ina collision because their bodies arethrown into a stationary object, eitherinside the vehicle, such as the steeringwheel, instrument panel or windshield,or outside the vehicle, such as thedriving surface or a tree, when theoccupant is thrown from the vehicle.Severe injuries also occur by occupantsbeing jolted by the forces of the crash, even without body contact with astationary object or surface
How Air Bags Protect FrontOccupants
37Seats & Restraints
All of these injuries are caused by theforce created by the collision as thevehicle is brought to a sudden stop. Thetime and distance which a vehicle isallowed in slowing or stopping in greatpart determines the severity of acollision’s effect on vehicle occupants. For example, when a vehicle brakes to astop at a red light, the occupant’s bodiesare forced forward. This is because boththe vehicle and its occupants areinitially traveling at the same speed. The brakes slow the vehicle, and theoccupants continue to move forwardsomewhat inside the vehicle. However, properly positioned and restrainedoccupants are rarely injured when avehicle comes to a stop by even suddenand hard braking. This is because evenhard braking allows a comparativelylong time and distance for the vehicle tostop. The safety belts and theoccupants’ strength are generallysufficient to safely counteract the forceof a braking stop.
In a crash, a vehicle may go fromhighway speed to a full stop in afraction of a second and in a distance ofless than one foot. This extremely shortstopping time and distance greatlyincreases the force placed upon theoccupants. No person has the strengthor reflexes to counteract this force.Even occupants properly positionedand wearing their safety belts will findtheir head, upper torso, arms, and hipsthrown forward at the speed the vehiclewas traveling before impact. Inmoderate to severe frontal collisions, even occupants wearing safety beltscan sustain internal brain and organinjuries without the occupant’s head ortorso hitting any stationary objects orsurfaces.
Air bags provide additional stoppingtime and distance for the head andupper torsos of front occupants inmoderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions. This additional timeand distance can save lives and preventserious injuries.
Besides their lifesaving benefits, the airbag system also poses some moderaterisks.
Because an air bag inflates withconsiderable force, speed andsuddenness, the air bag supplementalrestraint system will be safer and moreeffective if the occupants are properlypositioned in the vehicle.
Help Your Air Bags To ProtectYou*
38 Seats & Restraints
Warning
EssentialAir Bag Safety Rules:• Never place a rear-facing child
seat in the front seat.• Children age 12 years and under
should ride in the back seatwhenever possible.
• Always wear your safety belts, even if your vehicle is notequipped with an air bag.
• Move your seatback rearward asfar as is comfortable and safe, tiltthe seatback slightly and sitagainst the back of the seat.
• Do not place objects on, over ornear the air bag modules. They canbecome project i les duringinflation, causing severe injury.
• Do not lean forward or rest anypart of your body on the trimcovering the air bag modules.
• Do not drive with the steeringcolumn tilt adjusted fully upward.
Severe injury and death can resultfrom failing to observe these air bagsafety rules.
Always secure any rear-facing childseat in the back seat.
Children should be seated in the backseat.
Child restraint systems in which thechild faces the rear of the seat mustnever be placed in the front seat. Thedeployment of an air bag risks severeinjury or death to a child in a rear-facingchild seat placed in the front seat.
According to accident statistics, children age 12 years and under aresafer when properly restrained in theback seat than in the front seat, andshould ride in the back seat wheneverpossible. Children are safer in the backseat only because of the risks of injuryby air bags. Studies have shown thatchildren are also safer in the back seatthan in a front seat without an air bag.
Proper positioning of adults andteenagers.
Wear the three-point safety beltsat all times.
Adults and teenagers seated in the frontdriver and passenger seats can alsoimprove their safety and theeffectiveness of the air bags by usingproper seating positions.
For the best seating position of adultsand teenagers:
•
All occupants, including the driver, should always wear their safetybelts whether or not an air bag isalso provided at their seatingposition to minimize the risk ofsevere injury or death in the event ofa crash.
Air bags do not deploy in rear andside-impact collisions. Occupantsnot wearing their safety belts willnot be protected by any restraintsystem, resulting in severe injuriesor death in these types of collisions.
39Seats & Restraints
Occupants who are not properlywearing their safety belts may bethrown forward by braking beforeimpact, placing their bodies near oragainst the air bag modules. Thiscan cause severe injury from theforce of air bag’s deployment.
• Move the back of the seat rearwardas far back as is comfortable andsafe.
Positioning your seat farther awayfrom the air bag module will notdecrease the effectiveness of the airbag. Greater distance from themodule means greater protectionfrom the air bag’s forceful andsudden deployment. Never movethe driver’s seatback so far as toimpair the driver’s ability tocomfortably reach the steeringwheel, pedals and other instrumentand controls.
• Tilt the safety belt slightly and donot lean forward.
Tilt the seatback slightly, and sitwith your back against the back of
the seat. Do not lean or otherwiseposition your body close - within 15cm(6 inch) - to the air bag module.Do not rest any part of your body onor near the plastic trim covering theair bag module (the hub of thesteering wheel or the passenger sideof the instrument panel above theglove box). Try to keep your headand body more than 25 to 30 cm (10to 12 inches) away from the air bag.More distance is safer.
Warning
To perform well, an air bag mustdeploy quickly. The force is greatestin the first 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) afterthe air bag bursts through its coverand begins to inflate. Those 2 to 3inches immediately after the air bagbursts through its module cover andbegins to inflate are the risk zone.• If an occupant’s body is in this risk
zone when the air bag deploys, severe injury or even death couldresult.
• The force decreases as the air baginflates farther from the modulecover.
• Greater distance from the air bagmodule means greater safetywhen the air bag deploys.
40 Seats & Restraints
• Do not place objects, children orpets between you and the air bagmodule.
Your vehicle’s air bag modules arelocated on the steering wheel and onthe instrument panel above theglove box. Placing objects on, overor near the plastic trim coveringthese air bag modules could causethose objects to be propelled by theinflating air bag into your face andtorso causing serious injury.
Children and pets should never rideon another occupant’s lap. Do notplace objects which could causeinjury during deployment on anoccupant’s lap.
• Tilt the steering wheel downward(if so equipped), pointing the air bagtoward your chest instead of yourhead and neck.
Never position the steering wheel atthe highest position. This positionshould only be used to allow easyentry and exit from the driver’s seat.Lower the steering before starting
to drive. This will aim the air bagat the driver’s chest, rather than themore easily injured head and neck.
The fact that your vehicle may beseverely damaged and the air bagsdid not inflate or the fact that thevehicle is relatively undamaged andthe air bag did inflate does notnecessarily mean that there issomething wrong with your air bagsystem. The crash sensors detect theseverity of the crash, not the amountof damage to the vehicle.

New Vehicle Brake - IN
Use the following precautions for thefirst few hundred kilometres to improvethe performance and economy of yourvehicle and add to its long life:
Avoid full throttle starts.
Do not race the engine.
Avoid hard stops except inemergencies. This will allow yourbrakes to bed in properly.
Avoid quick star ts , suddenaccelerations, and prolongedhighspeed driving in order to avoiddamage to the engine and toconserve fuel.
Avoid full-throttle acceleration inlow gear.
Do not tow any other vehicle.

Operate the engine above idle onlyafter normal engine oil pressure hasbeen established. Forcing theturbocharger to operate before thebearings are adequately lubricatedcreates unnecessary friction.
Use only the specified engine oiland observe inspection andreplacement intervals.
At low ambient temperature, orwhen the vehicle has not been usedfor a long period, normal engine oilpressure and flow is affected. Underthese conditions the engine shouldbe started and allowed to idle for afew minutes before operating athigher rpm.
91Driving & Operating
Caution
Do not operate starter motor for morethan 10 seconds at a time.
If the engine does not start, wait 10seconds before trying again.
This will prevent starter motordamage.
Caution
Do not leave the key in 1 or 2 positionfor extended periods while the engineis not running.
This will discharge the battery.
Warning
Do not turn the key to 0 or 1 positionwhile driving.
Vehicle and brake assistance wouldnot operate, causing vehicle damage, personal injury or possibly death.

Do not park the vehicle on an easilyignitable surface. The hightemperature of the exhaust systemcould ignite the surface.
Always apply parking brakewithout pressing release button.Apply as firmly as possible ondownhill or uphill slopes. Depressthe footbrake at the same time toreduce operating force.
Switch off the engine and ignition.Turn the steering wheel until thesteering wheel lock engages.
If the vehicle is on a level surface oruphill slope, engage first gearbefore switching off the ignition. On an uphill slope, turn the frontwheels away from the kerb. If thevehicle is on a downhill slope, engage reverse gear beforeswitching off the ignition. Turn thefront wheels towards the kerb.
Close the windows.
Lock the vehicle.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
If the gear does not engage, set the leverin neutral, release the clutch pedal anddepress again; then repeat gearselection.
Do not grind the clutch unnecessarily. When operating, depress the clutchpedal completely. Do not use the pedalas a foot rest.
Caution
It is inadvisable to drive with handresting on the selector lever.
BRAKES
The brake system comprises twoindependent brake circuits.
If a brake circuit fails, the vehicle canstill be braked using the other brakecircuit. However, braking effect isachieved only when the brake pedal isdepressed firmly. Considerably moreforce is needed for this. The brakingdistance is extended. Seek the assis-tance of a CHEVROLET retailerworkshop before continuing yourjourney.
Caution
If one of the circuits fail, the brakepedal must be pressed with greaterpressure and the braking distance maybe increased. Have the brake systemc h e c k e d a n d r e p a i r e d b y
immediately.
If the brake pedal can be pressedfurther than normal, the brakes maybe in need of repair.
Consultimmediately.

Caution
Do not drive with your foot resting onthe brake pedal. Doing so willaccelerate wear of the brakecomponents. The brakes may alsobecome overheated, resulting inlonger braking distance and an unsafecondition.
Diesel Catalytic Converter
Diesel catalytic converter is a deviceused to reduce the array of emissionsfrom an internal combustion engine.Catalytic converter works by using acatalyst to stimulate a chemicalreaction in which the by-products ofcombustion are converted to produceless harmful substances, such as thevery poisonous carbon monoxide tocarbon dioxide, hydrocarbons into lessharmful gases.
Caution
Fuel grades other than those listed onpages on page95, could damage the catalyticconverter or electronic components.
Unburnt diesel will overheat anddamage the catalytic converter. Therefore avoid excessive use of thestarter, running the fuel tank dry andstarting the engine by pushing ortowing.
Fuel for diesel engines
In the event of misfiring, uneven enginerunning, a reduction in engineperformance or other unusual prob-lems, have the cause of the faultrectified by CHEVROLET retailerworkshop as soon as possible. In anemergency, driving can be continuedfor a short period, keeping vehiclespeed and engine speed low.
ENGINE EXHAUST
Danger
Engine exhaust gases containpoisonous carbon monoxide, whichis colourless and odourless andcould be fatal if inhaled.
If exhaust gases enter the interior ofthe vehicle, open the windows. Havethe cause of the fault rectified byCHEVROLET retailer workshop.
Avoid driving with an open loadcompartment, otherwise exhaustgases could enter the vehicle.
94 Driving & Operating
Fault
Warning
If there is a fault in the ABS, thewheels may be liable to lock due tobraking that is heavier than normal. The advantages of ABS are no longeravailable. During hard braking, thevehicle can no longer be steered andmay swerve.
Have the cause of the fault remedied byCHEVROLET retailer workshop.
Warning
If your brakes temporarily lose theirpower because of wet brakecomponents, the following procedurewill help restore their normalperformance:1. Check behind you for other
vehicles.2. Keep a safe forward speed with
plenty of space to your rear andsides.
3. Gently apply the brakes untilnormal performance is restored.
Antilock Brake System (ABS)(Option)
Antilock brake system (ABS) preventsthe wheels from locking.
ABS starts to regulate brake pressure assoon as a wheel shows a tendency tolock. The vehicle remains steerable, even during hard braking.
ABS control is made apparent through apulse in the brake pedal and the noise ofthe regulation process.
For optimum braking, keep the brakepedal fully depressed throughout thebraking process, despite the fact that thepedal is pulsating. Do not reduce thepressure on the pedal.
The ABS control can be known byvibration and noise of theABS process.
When the vehicle ignition is turned on,a chime is heard which is normal andindicate theABS is ready.
Seeon page 58.
Antilock brake system (ABS)warning light
Warning
After driving through deep water, washing the vehicle, or using thebrakes excessively when going downa steep hill, the brakes cantemporarily lose their stoppingpower. This may be due to wet brakecomponents or overheating.
If your brakes temporarily lose theirs topp ing power because ofoverheating: Shift to a lower gearwhen going down hills. Do notcontinuously apply the brakes.
95Driving & Operating

Check the pressure of cold tires at leastevery 14 days and before any longjourney. Do not forget the spare wheel.
Unscrew the valve cap.
Tire pressure
Tire pressures label is on the driver’sdoor frame.
The tire pressure data refers to coldtires. It applies to summer and wintertires.
Always inflate the spare tire to thepressure specified for full load.
The ECO tire pressure serves to achievethe smal l e s t amoun t o f fue lconsumption possible.
Incorrect tire pressures will impairsafety, vehicle handling, comfort andfuel economy and will increase tirewear.
Warning
If the pressure is too low, this canresult in considerable tire warmupand internal damage, leading to treadseparation and even to tire blow-outat high speeds.
123Vehicle Care
Tread Depth
Check tread depth at regular intervals.
Tires should be replaced for safetyreasons at a tread depth of 2-3 mm (4mm for winter tires).
The legally permissible minimum treaddepth (1.6 mm) has been reached whenthe tread has worn down as far as one ofthe tread wear indicators (TWI). Theirposition is indicated by markings on the
sidewall.
If there is more wear at the front than therear, swap round front wheels and rear
wheels. Ensure that the direction ofrotation of the wheels is the same asbefore.
Tires age, even if they are not used. Werecommend tire replacement every 6years.
Warning
Use of unsuitable tires or wheels maylead to accidents and will invalidatethe vehicle type approval.
Warning
Do not use different size and type oftires and wheels than those originallyinstalled on the vehicle. It can affectsafety and performance of thevehicle. It could lead to handlingfailure or rollover and serious injury. When replacing tires, be sure toinstall all four tires and wheels of thesame size, type, tread, brand andload-carrying capacity. The use ofany other tire size or type mayseriously affect ride, handling, ground clearance, stopping distance, body clearance and speedometerreliability.
124 Vehicle Care
Wheels Covers
Wheel covers and tires that are factoryapproved for the respective vehicle andcomply with all of the relevant wheeland tire combination requirementsmust be used.
If the wheel covers and tires used arenot factory approved, the tires must nothave a rim protection ridge.
Wheel covers must not impair brakecooling.
Warning
Use of unsuitable tires or wheelcovers could lead to sudden pressureloss and thereby accidents.
Tire Changing
Mixing tires could cause you to losecontrol while driving.
If you mix tires of different sizes, brands, or types (radial and bias-beltedtires), the vehicle may not handleproperly, and you could have a crash.Using tires of different sizes, brands, ortypes may also cause damage to yourvehicle. Be sure to use the correct size, brand, and type of tires on all wheels.
Make the following preparations andobserve the following information:
Pull over your vehicle to a safeplace away from traffic.
Park the vehicle on a lever, firm andnon-skid surface. The front wheelsmust be in the straight-aheadposition.

Coolant and antifreeze
Coolant :
Brake fluid
Use only organic acid type-long lifecoolant (LLC) antifreeze.
In countries with moderate climate thecoolant provides freeze protectiondown to approx. -35°C.
In countries with cold climate thecoolant provides freeze protectiondown to approx. -50°C. Thisconcentration should be maintained allyear-round.
Maintain a sufficient concentration ofanti-freeze.
Coolant additives intended to giveadditional corrosion protection or sealagainst minor leaks can cause functionproblems.
Ethylene Glycol (organicacid type long life coolant)
Only use our authorized brake fluid forthis vehicle(DOT 4).
Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisturewhich will reduce braking effective-
ness. The brake fluid should thereforebe replaced at the specified interval.
Brake fluid should be stored in a sealedcontainer to avoid water absorption.
Ensure brake fluid does not becomecontaminated.
Only use XGPSAE75W85W fluid.
