    SAFETY BELTS

This section of the manual describeshow to use safety belts properly. It alsodescribes some things not to do withsafety belts.

    Warning

Do not let anyone ride where a safetybelt cannot be worn properly. In acrash, if you or your passenger(s) arenot wearing safety belts, injuries can

be much worse than if you arewearing safety belts. You can beseriously injured or killed by hittingthings inside the vehicle harder or bybeing ejected from the vehicle. Inaddition, anyone who is not buckledup can strike other passengers in thevehicle.

    (Continued)

    Warning (Continued)

It is extremely dangerous to ride in acargo area, inside or outside of avehicle. In a collision, passengersriding in these areas are more likelyto be seriously injured or killed. Donot allow passengers to ride in anyarea of the vehicle that is notequipped with seats and safety belts.

Always wear a safety belt, and checkthat all passenger(s) are restrainedproperly too.

    Why Safety Belts Work

When riding in a vehicle, you travel asfast as the vehicle does. If the vehiclestops suddenly, you keep going untilsomething stops you. It could be thewindshield, the instrument panel, or thesafety belts!

When you wear a safety belt, you andthe vehicle slow down together. There

is more time to stop because you stopover a longer distance and, when wornproperly, your strongest bones take theforces from the safety belts. That is whywearing safety belts makes such goodsense.

    Questions and Answers About SafetyBelts

Q: Will I be trapped in the vehicleafter a crash if I am wearing asafety belt?

A: You could be - whether you arewearing a safety belt or not. Yourchance of being conscious duringand after a crash, so you canunbuckle and get out, is muchgreater if you are belted.

Q: If my vehicle has airbags, whyshould I have to wear safetybelts?

A: Airbags are supplemental systemsonly; so they work with safety belts- not instead of them. Whether ornot an airbag is provided, alloccupants still have to buckle up to

get the most protection. Also, in nearly all regions, the lawrequires wearing safety belts.

    HOW TO WEAR SAFETYBELTS PROPERLY

This section is only for people of adultsize.

There are special things to know aboutsafety belts and children. And there aredifferent rules for smaller children andinfants. If a child will be riding in thevehicle, see Older Children on page2-30 or Infants and Young Children onpage 2-32. Follow those rules foreveryone's protection.

It is very important for all occupants tobuckle up. Statistics show that unbeltedpeople are hurt more often in crashesthan those who are wearing safety belts.

There are important things to knowabout wearing a safety belt properly.

    2-16 Seats and Restraints

    46/317

Sit up straight and always keep yourfeet on the floor in front of you.

Always use the correct buckle foryour seating position.

Wear the lap part of the belt low andsnug on the hips, just touching thethighs. In a crash, this applies forceto the strong pelvic bones and you

would be less likely to slide underthe lap belt. If you slid under it, thebelt would apply force on yourabdomen. This could cause seriousor even fatal injuries.

Wear the shoulder belt over theshoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best ableto take belt restraining forces. Theshoulder belt locks if there is asudden stop or crash.

    Warning

You can be seriously injured, or evenkilled, by not wearing your safety

belt properly. Never allow the lap or shoulder

belt to become loose or twisted. Never wear the shoulder belt

under both arms or behind yourback.

Never route the lap or shoulderbelt over an armrest.

All seating positions in the vehicle havea lap-shoulder belt except for thesecond row center position which mayhave a lap belt. See Lap Belt on page2-20 for more information.

The following instructions explain howto wear a lap-shoulder belt properly.

    1. Adjust the seat, if the seat isadjustable, so you can sit up straight.

    2. Pick up the latch plate and pull thebelt across you. Do not let it gettwisted. The lap-shoulder belt may lock ifyou pull the belt across you veryquickly. If this happens, let the beltgo back slightly to unlock it. Thenpull the belt across you moreslowly.

If the shoulder portion of apassenger belt is pulled out all theway, the child restraint lockingfeature may be engaged. If thishappens, let the belt go back all theway and start again.

    3. Push the latch plate into the buckleuntil it clicks.

Pull up on the latch plate to makesure it is secure.

Position the release button on thebuckle so that the safety belt couldbe quickly unbuckled if necessary.

    4. If equipped with a shoulder beltheight adjuster, move it to the

height that is right for you. SeeShoulder Belt Height Adjusterlater in this section for instructionson use and important safetyinformation.

    5. To make the lap part tight, pull upon the shoulder belt.

It may be necessary to pull thestitching on the safety belt throughthe latch plate to fully tighten thelap belt on smaller occupants.

To unlatch the belt, push the button onthe buckle. The belt should return to itsstowed position. Slide the latch plate upthe safety belt webbing when the safetybelt is not in use. The latch plate shouldrest on the stitching on the safety belt, near the guide loop on the side wall.

Before a door is closed, be sure the

safety belt is out of the way. If a door isslammed against a safety belt, damagecan occur to both the safety belt and thevehicle.

The vehicle has a shoulder belt heightadjuster for the driver and outboardfront passenger seating positions.

Adjust the height so that the shoulderportion of the belt is centered on theshoulder. The belt should be away fromthe face and neck, but not falling off ofthe shoulder. Improper shoulder beltheight adjustment could reduce theeffectiveness of the safety belt in a

    crash.

    Safety Belt Pretensioners

    SAFETY BELT USE DURINGPREGNANCY

The vehicle has safety belt pretensionersfor the front outboard occupants.Although the safety belt pretensionerscannot be seen, they are part of the safetybelt assembly. They can help tighten thesafety belts during a severe frontal crash, and side and rear impacts if the thresholdconditions for pretensioner activationare met. Pretensioners are not designed

to activate in a minor frontal crash.Pretensioners are designed to activate ina moderate to severe rear crash.

Pretensioners work only once. If thepretensioners activate in a crash, thepretensioners and probably other newparts for the vehicles safety belt systemwill need to be replaced. See ReplacingSafety Belt System Parts after a Crashon page 2-21.

Safety belts work for everyone, includingpregnant women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriouslyinjured if they do not wear safety belts.

A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portionshould be worn as low as possible,

across the pelvis to prevent pressure onthe abdomen.

The best way to protect the fetus is toprotect the mother. When a safety belt isworn properly, it is more likely that thefetus will not be hurt in a crash. Forpregnant women, as for anyone, the keyto making safety belts effective iswearing them properly.

    LAP BELT

This section is only for the lap belt. Tolearn how to wear a lap-shoulder belt, see Lap-Shoulder Belt on page 2-16.

The vehicle may have a second rowcenter seating position with a lap belt. The lap belt has no retractor.

To make the belt longer, tilt the latchplate and pull it along the belt. Buckle,

position and release it the same way asthe lap part of a lap-shoulder belt.

To make the belt shorter, pull its freeend as shown until the belt is snug.

Make sure the release button on thebuckle is positioned so you would beable to unbuckle the safety belt quicklyif necessary.

If you find that the latch plate will notgo fully into the buckle, see if you are

using the correct buckle. Be sure thatthe latch plate clicks when inserted intothe buckle.

To unlatch the belt, push the button onthe buckle.

Now and then, check that the safety beltreminder light, safety belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors, and anchoragesare all working properly. Look for anyother loose or damaged safety beltsystem parts that might keep a safetybelt system from doing its job. See yourCHEVROLET retailer to have itrepaired. Torn or frayed safety beltsmay not protect you in a crash. They can

rip apart under impact forces. If a belt istorn or frayed, get a new one right away.

Make sure the safety belt reminder lightis working. See Safety Belt Reminderon page 4-16.

Do not sit unnecessarily closeto any airbag, as you would be ifsitting on the edge of the seat orleaning forward. Safety belts helpkeep you in position before andduring a crash. Always wear a safetybelt, even with airbags. The drivershould sit as far back as possiblewhile still maintaining control of thevehicle.

Occupants should not lean on orsleep against the door or sidewindows in seating positions with

    seat-mounted side impact airbagsand/or roof-rail airbags.

WarningChildren who are up against, or veryclose to, any airbag when it inflatescan be seriously injured or killed.Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offerprotection for adults and olderchildren, but not for young childrenand infants. Neither the vehicle'ssafety belt system nor its airbagsystem is designed for them. Youngchildren and infants need theprotection that a child restraintsystem can provide. Driver Side Shown, Passenger SideSimilar

If the vehicle has roof-rail airbags forthe driver, outboard front passenger, and second row outboard passengers, they are in the ceiling above the sidewindows.

WarningIf something is between an occupantand an airbag, the airbag might notinflate properly or it might force theobject into that person causingsevere injury or even death. The pathof an inflating airbag must be keptclear. Do not put anything betweenan occupant and an airbag, and donot attach or put anything on thesteering wheel hub or on or near anyother airbag covering.

Do not use seat accessories thatblock the inflation path of a seat-mounted side impact airbag.

Never secure anything to the roof ofa vehicle with roof-rail airbags byrouting a rope or tie-down through

any door or window opening. If you

do, the path of an inflating roof-railairbag will be blocked.

WHEN SHOULD AN AIRBAGINFLATE?Frontal airbags are designed to inflatein moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes to help reduce thepotential for severe injuries mainly tothe drivers or outboard front passen-gers head and chest. However, they areonly designed to inflate if the impactexceeds a predetermined deploymentthreshold. Deployment thresholds areused to predict how severe a crash islikely to be in time for the airbags toinflate and help restrain the occupants.

Whether the frontal airbags will orshould deploy is not based on how fastyour vehicle is traveling. It dependslargely on what you hit, the direction ofthe impact, and how quickly yourvehicle slows down.

Frontal airbags may inflate at differentcrash speeds. For example:

If the vehicle hits a stationaryobject, the airbags could inflate at adifferent crash speed than if thevehicle hits a moving object.

    2-26 Seats and Restraints

  • 7/27/2019 CarManual Captiva 3July12

    56/317

If the vehicle hits an object thatdeforms, the airbags could inflate ata different crash speed than if thevehicle hits an object that does notdeform.

If the vehicle hits a narrow object(like a pole), the airbags couldinflate at a different crash speedthan if the vehicle hits a wide object(like a wall).

If the vehicle goes into an object atan angle, the airbags could inflate ata different crash speed than if thevehicle goes straight into the object.

Thresholds can also vary with specificvehicle design.

Frontal airbags are not intended toinflate during vehicle rollovers, rearimpacts, or in many side impacts.

Always wear your safety belt, evenwith frontal airbags.

The vehicle may have seat-mounted sideimpact and roof-rail airbags. See AirbagSystem on page 2-22. Seat-mounted sideimpact and roof-rail airbags are intendedto inflate in moderate to severe sidecrashes. Seat-mounted side impact androof-rail airbags will inflate if the crashseverity is above the systems designedthreshold level. The threshold level canvary with specific vehicle design.

Seat-mounted side impact airbags arenot intended to inflate in frontalimpacts, near frontal impacts, rollovers,or rear impacts. Roof-rail airbags arenot intended to inflate in rollovers orrear impacts.

A seat-mounted side impact airbag androof-rail airbags are intended to deploy

on the side of the vehicle that is struck.

In any particular crash, no one can saywhether an airbag should have inflatedsimply because of the damage to avehicle or because of what the repaircosts were. For frontal airbags, inflation

is determined by what the vehicle hits, the angle of the impact, and how quicklythe vehicle slows down. For seat-mounted side impact and roof-railairbags, deployment is determined bythe location and severity of the sideimpact.

    57/317

WHAT MAKES AN AIRBAGINFLATE?In a deployment event, the sensingsystem sends an electrical signaltriggering a release of gas from theinflator. Gas from the inflator fills theairbag causing the bag to break out ofthe cover and deploy. The inflator, theairbag, and related hardware are all partof the airbag module. Frontal airbagmodules are located inside the steeringwheel and instrument panel. Forvehicles with seat-mounted side impactairbags, there are airbag modules in theside of the front seatbacks closest to thedoor. For vehicles with roof-railairbags, there are airbag modules in theceiling of the vehicle, near the sidewindows that have occupant seatingpositions.

HOW DOES AN AIRBAGRESTRAIN?In moderate to severe frontal or nearfrontal collisions, even belted occu-pants can contact the steering wheel orthe instrument panel. In moderate tosevere side collisions, even beltedoccupants can contact the inside of thevehicle.

Airbags supplement the protectionprovided by safety belts . Frontalairbags distribute the force of the

impact more evenly over the occupant'supper body, stopping the occupantmore gradually. Seat-mounted sideimpact and roof-rail airbags distributethe force of the impact more evenlyover the occupant's upper body.

But airbags would not help in manytypes of collisions, primarily becausethe occupant's motion is not towardthose airbags. See When Should an

Airbag Inflate? on page 2-25 for moreinformation.

Airbags should never be regarded asanything more than a supplement tosafety belts.

WHAT WILL YOU SEE AFTERAN AIRBAG INFLATES?After the frontal airbags and seat-mounted side impact airbags inflate, they quickly deflate, so quickly thatsome people may not even realize anairbag inflated. Roof-rail airbags maystill be at least partially inflated forsome time after they inflate. Somecomponents of the airbag module maybe hot for several minutes. For locationof the airbags, see Where Are theAirbags? on page 2-24.

The parts of the airbag that come intocontact with you may be warm, but nottoo hot to touch. There may be somesmoke and dust coming from the ventsin the deflated airbags. Airbag inflationdoes not prevent the driver from seeingout of the windshield or being able tosteer the vehicle, nor does it preventpeople from leaving the vehicle.

    Warning

When an airbag inflates, there maybe dust in the air. This dust couldcause breathing problems for peoplewith a history of asthma or otherbreathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should getout as soon as it is safe to do so. If youhave breathing problems but cannotget out of the vehicle after an airbag

inflates, then get fresh air by openinga window or a door. If you experi-ence breathing problems followingan airbag deployment, you shouldseek medical attention.

The vehicle has a feature that mayautomatically unlock the doors, turn theinterior lamps on, turn the hazardwarning flashers on, and shut off the

fuel system after the airbags inflate. You can lock the doors, turn the interiorlamps off, and turn the hazard warningflashers off by using the controls forthose features.

    Warning

A crash severe enough to inflate theairbags may have also damagedimportant functions in the vehicle, such as the fuel system, brake andsteering systems, etc. Even if thevehicle appears to be drivable after amoderate crash, there may beconcealed damage that could make itdifficult to safely operate the vehicle.

Use caution if you should attempt torestart the engine after a crash hasoccurred.

In many crashes severe enough to inflatethe airbag, windshields are broken byvehicle deformation. Additional wind-shield breakage may also occur from thefront outboard passenger airbag.

Airbags are designed to inflate onlyonce. After an airbag inflates, youwill need some new parts for theairbag system. If you do not getthem, the airbag system will not be

there to help protect you in anothercrash. A new system will includeairbag modules and possibly otherparts. The service manual for thevehicle covers the need to replaceother parts.

    CHILD RESTRAINTS

    OLDER CHILDREN

Older children who have outgrownbooster seats should wear the vehicle'ssafety belts.

    The manufacturer's instructions that

come with the booster seat, state theweight and height limitations for thatbooster. Use a booster seat with a lap-shoulder belt until the child passes thebelow fit test:

Sit all the way back on the seat. Dothe knees bend at the seat edge? Ifyes, continue. If no, return to thebooster seat.

Buckle the lap-shoulder belt. Doesthe shoulder belt rest on theshoulder? If yes, continue. If no,then return to the booster seat.

Does the lap belt fit low and snug onthe hips, touching the thighs? If yes, continue. If no, return to the boosterseat.

Can proper safety belt fit be

maintained for the length of thetrip? If yes, continue. If no, return tothe booster seat.

Q: What is the proper way to wear

    safety belts?

A: An older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additionalrestraint a shoulder belt canprovide. The shoulder belt shouldnot cross the face or neck. The lapbelt should fit snugly below thehips, just touching the top of thethighs. This applies belt force to the

child's pelvic bones in a crash. Itshould never be worn over theabdomen, which could cause severeor even fatal internal injuries in acrash.

According to accident statistics, childrenand infants are safer when properlyrestrained in a child restraint system orinfant restraint system secured in a rearseating position.

In a crash, children who are not buckledup can strike other people who arebuckled up, or can be thrown out of thevehicle. Older children need to usesafety belts properly.

    Warning

Never allow more than one child towear the same safety belt. The safetybelt cannot properly spread theimpact forces. In a crash, they can becrushed together and seriouslyinjured. A safety belt must be used byonly one person at a time.

    Warning

Never allow a child to wear thesafety belt with the shoulder beltbehind their back. A child can beseriously injured by not wearing thelap-shoulder belt properly. In acrash, the child would not berestrained by the shoulder belt. Thechild could move too far forwardincreasing the chance of head and

neck injury. The child might alsoslide under the lap belt. The beltforce would then be applied right onthe abdomen. That could causeserious or fatal injuries. The shoulderbelt should go over the shoulder andacross the chest.

INFANTS AND YOUNGCHILDRENEveryone in a vehicle needs protection!

This includes infants and all otherchildren. Neither the distance travelednor the age and size of the travelerchanges the need, for everyone, to usesafety restraints.

    Warning

Children can be seriously injured orstrangled if a shoulder belt is

wrapped around their neck and thesafety belt continues to tighten.Never leave children unattended in avehicle and never allow children toplay with the safety belts.

    Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer

protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants.Neither the vehicle's safety belt systemnor its airbag system is designed forthem. Every time infants and youngchildren ride in vehicles, they shouldhave the protection provided byappropriate child restraints.

    Children who are not restrained

properly can strike other people, or canbe thrown out of the vehicle.

    Warning

Never hold an infant or a child whileriding in a vehicle. Due to crashforces, an infant or a child willbecome so heavy it is not possible tohold it during a crash. For example,

in a crash at only 40 km/h (25 mph), a5.5 kg (12 lb) infant will suddenlybecome a 110 kg (240 lb) force on apersons arms. An infant should besecured in an appropriate restraint.

    Warning

Children who are up against, or veryclose to, any airbag when it inflatescan be seriously injured or killed.Never put a rear-facing childrestraint in the right front seat.Secure a rear-facing child restraint ina rear seat. It is also better to secure a

forward-facing child restraint in theright front seat, always move thefront passenger seat as far back as itwill go.

Q: What are the different types ofadd-on child restraints?

A: Add-on child restraints, which arepurchased by the vehicles owner, are available in four basic types.Selection of a particular restraintshould take into consideration notonly the childs weight, height, andage but also whether or not therestraint will be compatible with themotor vehicle in which it will beused.

For most basic types of child

restraints, there are many differentmodels available. When purchasinga child restraint, besure it isdesigned to be used in a motorvehicle.

The restraint manufacturers instru-ctions that come with the restraintstate the weight and height limita-tions for a particular child restraint. In

addition, there are many kinds ofrestraints available for children withspecial needs.

    Warning

To reduce the risk of neck and headinjury during a crash, infants needcomplete support. In a crash, if aninfant is in a rear-facing child restraint, the crash forces can be distributed

across the strongest part of an infant'sbody, the back and shoulders. Infantsshould always be secured in rear-facing child restraints.

We recommend that children and childrestraints be secured in a rear seat, including: an infant or a child riding in arear-facing child restraint; a child ridingin a forward-facing child seat; an older

child riding in a booster seat; and child-ren, who are large enough, using safetybelts.

Never put a rear-facing child seat in thefront. This is because the risk to therear-facing child is so great if the airbagdeploys.

    Warning

A child in a rear-facing child restraintcan be seriously injured or killed ifthe passenger airbag inflates. This isbecause the back of the rear-facingchild restraint would be very close tothe inflating airbag. Secure rearfac-ing child restraints in a rear seat.

    A child in a forward-facing child rest-

raint can be seriously injured or killedif the outboard front passenger airbaginflates and the passenger seat is in aforward position. If you secure aforward-facing child restraint in theoutboard front passenger seat, alwaysmove the passenger seat as far back asit will go. It is better to secure the childrestraint in a rear seat.

When securing a child restraint in a rearseating position, study the instructionsthat came with the child restraint tomake sure it is compatible with thisvehicle.
