preparatory education, while teaching and sharing Carmelite traditions and values to young men in South-Los Angeles. In 1960, as the city grew, the Carmelites expanded that mission, building a second high school in suburban Encino. Today, Crespi Carmelite High School, having recently celebrating their golden jubilee, is considered one of the finest all-boy college preparatory high schools in Southern California.Times change, and inner-city Catholic schools continue to struggle.

Mt. Carmel had to close the doors in 1976. The once-famous school is gone, but not the lessons learned. The Carmelite Mission and traditions continue in Encino as well as South-Central Los Angeles through alumni and generous supporters of the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation, an education based 501c3 Non-Profit. The MCAF’s mission, in addition to contributing to the Alexander-McKeever tuition assistance fund at Crespi, is to help the remaining Catholic schools in the diocese Deanery 16. The MCAF helps fund special needs and projects at these schools. Through collaborations and strategic alliances, the MCAF provides mentoring and counseling to students and parents K to college. They provide tuition assistance, book scholarships as well as modest bridge-scholarships helping college bound students. Thanks to superior preparation,

THE LADY OF THE PLACE

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order.

The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid 13th centuries. They built a chapel in the midst of their hermitages, which they dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, whom they conceived of in chivalric terms as the “Lady of the place.”Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel also known as the Brown Scapular, a sacramental associated with promises of Mary’s special aid for the salvation of the devoted wearer. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on July16th. A tradition first attested to in the late 14th century says that Saint Simon Stock, an early prior general of the Carmelite Order, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in which she gave him the Brown Scapular which formed part of the Carmelite habit, promising that those who died wearing the scapular would be saved. The Carmelites see in the Blessed Virgin Mary

a perfect model of the interior life of prayer and contemplation to which Carmelites aspire, a model of virtue, as well as the person who was closest in life to Jesus Christ. The Stella Maris Monastery on Mount Carmel, named after a traditional title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is considered the spiritual headquarters of the order. Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene de’ Pazzi, OCD, a revered authority on Carmelite spirituality, wrote that devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel means: a special call to the interior life, which is preeminently a Marian life. Our Lady wants us to resemble her not only in our outward vesture but far more, in heart and spirit. According to the ways in which the Church has intervened at various times to clarify the meaning and privileges of the Brown Scapular: “The scapular is a Marian habit or garment. It is both a sign and pledge of belonging to Mary and a pledge of her motherly protection; not only in this life, but also after death. As a sign, it is a conventional sign signifying three elements strictly joined: first, belonging to a religious family particularly devoted to Mary, especially dear to Mary, the Carmelite Order; second, consecration to Mary, devotion to and trust in her Immaculate Heart; third an incitement to become like Mary by imitating her virtues, above all her humility, chastity, and spirit of prayer.” Today, the Carmelite Orders, while encouraging a belief in Mary’s general aid and prayerful assistance for their souls beyond death and commending devotion to Mary especially on Saturdays which are dedicated to her, explicitly stated in the official catechetical materials that they do not promulgate the Sabbatine privilege, and are at one with official Church teaching on the matter which might explain why we did not win any CIF football or basketball championships in the 1960s & 70s. However, that is just one person’s consideration … and I could be wrong.

MT. CARMEL’S FIELD OF DREAMS

This Fall, through the hard work and perseverance of John Young ’67, the Department of Parks and Recreation is allowing the MCAF & RBI, (John

Young’s non-profit, Reviving Baseball in Inner-cities), to name The Field at the Mount Carmel Recreation Center Alexander-McKeever Field in honor of our Crusader All-Americans Kermit Alexander’59 and Mike & Marlin McKeever’57. They were an inspiration to many and made us all proud to be Crusaders.

Who among us does not share some special memory of The Field.

If The Field is green today, it is from all the blood, sweat and tears shed on it. I recall Bro. Lawrence marching combatants out onto The Field to settle their disagreements wearing 1 LB. boxing gloves to the delight of the cheering, jeering student body. Once mutually exhausted, humiliated, and testosterone depleted…it was “Peaceful Shores” again. Bro. Lawrence was a brilliant Dean of Discipline. One year, the student body was getting a little too rambunctious (more like free-for-alls) during ASB election week when receiving free voter

incentives (bribes) like cookies & cupcakes from St. Michael’s and St. Mary’s girls or 45 RPM records from radio stations, and perhaps a few cigars from anonymous donors, politics at Carmel was like Tammany Hall-West. When we all returned to the school yard at the appropriate time for the next distribution, we discovered that Brother had the wooden stumping platforms moved from the school yard out onto The Field. Where Fr. Elias had previously waded into the crowd swinging his paddle like a police baton trying to restore a little order his only response was a perfectly pitched apple core in his ear. Now, I do not know who threw it, however, James Macias’65 was in the area and he did go on to coach pitchers from Little League through Connie Mack for 20 years. During the next round of speech making and voter incentive distributions, when chaos seemed eminent, without breaking a sweat or saying a word Bro. Lawrence simply turned on the sprinklers and the would-be rioters scattered like a flock of seagulls. The man was a quiet genius.

I know there are hundreds of memories to share about The Field so….

There will be a Concelebrated Mass at St. Raphael’sFr. Gus Carter, O.Carm.’41, Fr. Peter Liuzzi O.Carm.’57, Fr. John Coleman, O.Carm.’69, Fr. Tracy O’Sullivan, O.Carm. St. Raphael’s pastor, Fr. Tom Schrader, O.Carm. Crespi President, Fr. Paul Henson, O.Carm., Crespi Principal

All former glee club members will be invited to arrive early and gather around the altar for a quick rehearsal of a couple of glee club classics and of course…The Alma Mater.

Then procession to Field for DedicationThen process back to St. Raphael’s Auditorium for Brunch/ Reception

Guest speaker:

This will be a “Fun”-Raiser”…proceeds will be shared equally between The Alexander-McKeever tuition assistance fund and the MCAF

To honor the memory of Bro. Lawrence Brown and his Mount Carmel 50/50 club…there will be a 50/50 raffle. Tickets at the door…winner MUST BE present. $5.00 each or 10 for $20.00. We love CHECKS.

WHO DESIGNED THE CRUSADER WEBSITE?

Jerry Kelly’63 was one of my high school heroes. He was a senior when I was a sophomore. You know, he could drive a car, and seemed always to

be surrounded by the best looking girls from St. Mary’s Academy. Jerry played center on our OL and was named first team All-Catholic League his senior year.He was big at 6’3” 225 lbs and very agile and quick for a big guy. I was lucky enough to play on the varsity my sophomore year and did not mind doing one-on-one drills with him even though he was 50 lbs bigger than me. He may have knocked me out of my shoes a few times…but he never stomped on my shoes…like most other less-agile big guys. That was much more painful than getting flat-backed.

When we trained at Washington High School during the summer we may have been close in the 40 yd dash, but he could beat me in the 100 and embarrass me in the 200…and I was a running back. Since we went to Carmel together and I saw him everyday I did not realize that he was such an exceptional athlete…but the University of Notre Dame did. He would go on to play for Ara Parsigian and was a member of the 1966 National Championship team with the likes of Nick Eddy and Alan Page to name a few.

I was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska and performing “duty” by shoveling snow from the officers parking lot at 30 degrees below zero while my first sergeant watched my roommate and I from the dental clinic window. I don’t recall what our indiscretion was, however, my roommate, Joe Lupoli and I decided to further irritate the first sergeant “whistling while we worked” so to speak, pretending that we were warm and comfortable…and

listening to the famous Notre Dame vs. Michigan State 10 – 10 tie football game on a portable radio. It is the nature of the game that interior linemen get little recognition on television and even less on radio broadcasts. In addition to playing center, Jerry Kelly was kind enough to down a punt on the Michigan State 1 yard line which required the radio announcer give Jerry kudos, making the day for Joe and I sending us jumping all over that parking lot in celebration.

Jerry received a degree in Accounting to bring home to SoCal along with a beautiful wife from a different St. Mary’s…this time it was St. Mary’s College in South Bend. After finishing his military tour as a Naval Officer he started as a C.P.A. for one of the big firms in Los Angeles. Later, he started his own firm in Orange County. Jerry and his lovely wife Sharyn, live in Corona Del Mar and have three children and eight grandchildren.

Jerry has served as the MCAF treasurer for several years, he spearheaded and sponsored the first academic decathlon team for St.Odelia’s and continues to be one of the MCAFs most generous supporters.

Jerry Kelly’63…designed, developed and paid for the Mount Carmel website. I can only imagine the time it took him going through all the year books and selecting music from the era alone.

Just recently the Serra High School Alumni Board were praising our website. Thank you Jerry.Visit it soon…and don’t forget to click on Memory Lane.

With limited funds and the American economy recovering, the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation was able to produce short term

emergency tuition assistance to Catholic schools throughout Los Angeles. These ETA donations were made possible by the kindness and generosity of our Crusader donors who support the MCAF mission.

As you well know, the annual Padre Golf Tournament is our major source of revenue, so this year’s event on May 16, 2011, will be a great day to contribute to the schools we once attended in our old neighborhoods.

The following schools received $1,000.00 ETA gifts: St. Michaels, St. Lawrence, St. Odilia, St. Raphael,

Mother of Sorrows, Nativity, Verbum Dei H.S. and Cathedral H.S.

Our ETA Program also included a gift of $2,000.00 to the McKeever/Alexander fund at Crespi High and a $3,000.00 gift to St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood bringing our total ETA Gifts to 13,000.00. We could not have done it without the Spirit of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a dedicated MCAF Board, and your Crusader charity.

On Peaceful Shores…

IRISHMEN UNITE!

On the feast of Saint Patrick, March 17th 2011, Crespi Carmelite High School once again hosted a delicious corn beef luncheon with all the

trimmings and customary beverages required at such events. About 40 Irish Crusaders and those who wished they were Irish attended. Fr. Gus Carter, O Carm.’41 was the featured Irishman. Fr. John Coleman, O Carm.’69 also stopped by for a visit. On that day Fr. John was half Irish & half Mexican. It was rumored that on May 5th 2011, like a chameleon, he will become half Mexican & half Irish. While growing up in St.Raphael’s parish with the Coleman family it depended on which one of his parents I was talking to that determined which half

was better. On behalf of all who attended I would like to again thank...Bridget…The Magician in the Kitchen.

A HAIRE AFFAIR

On Tuesday, April 12th 2011, George Guzman’63 and I attended the monthly Crusader Luncheon organized by Jim Haire’48. There were 15 or

16 Crusaders in attendance all laughing and lying. Lee Vollmer’47 was there as well. Lee graduated from Carmel the year I was born and looks 10 years younger than me. Clearly, I am doing something wrong. George and I were invited to bring them up to date with the activities of the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation, so we did. I enjoyed visiting with John Gogian’48 and Earl Ricks’47. They were very engaging and full of zest, enjoying sharing Mt. Carmel memories. There was even one Crusader’s childhood friend in attendance who graduated from Loyola. “And the lion will lay down with the lamb.” I hope that wasn’t a sign of the end of days. Just kidding, I have two brother-in-laws that are Cubs and another one from Cathedral. A good time was had by all. Call Jim Haire’48 and try to make it to the next luncheon. John Martin’65

DECEMBER BOARD MEETING:A MT. CARMEL EDUCATION TAUGHT SERVICE TO OTHERS

By: Marilee Alessandra

St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood hosted the MCAF Board for our quarterly meeting December 12th in their lovely new dining

room, built thanks to a contribution from the Hannon Family Foundation. Sister Kathleen Kelly, CSJ, Director of Special Projects, and Sister Judy Diaz Molosky, CSJ, Development Director, were our warm and welcoming hostesses. Sister Kathleen was nice enough to begin our business meeting with a beautiful Advent prayer.

After business was completed, Louverne Antoine, violinist and instructor at St. Odilia School, entertained us, thanks to the generosity of St. Odilia principal Sharon Oliver. Also, thanks to a generous anonymous donor, we were treated to a fabulous Mexican buffet to celebrate The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, prepared by restaurateur and St. Odilia parent Lorena Ayala, owner of “El Cihualteco,” located in Huntington Park .

We then proceeded to honor our recently retired chairman, Lance Williams MC’65, and retiring board members Al Prukop MC’57, and Jerry Kelly MC’63. Beautiful etched awards, created by Mt. Carmel alum, Roland Hicks, MC’67 of Hicks Trophy Company, were presented by current co-chairman George Guzman MC’63, to Lance and Al, and received in absentia for Jerry by Rich Monteilh MC’76, our other current co-chairman. In the usual Carmel style, eloquent words of gratitude and support were expressed by many at the table, directed not only to the honorees of the day, but also Father Richard Nagle, OCarm. and Brother Lawrence Brown OCarm. As many of you

know very well, Father Nagle was the charismatic, “arm-twisting” founder of the original Padre Golf Tournament that raised over $750,000 to provide retirement benefits for The Carmelite Order of St. Elias. And, of course, Brother Lawrence was a figure on campus from 1941 until 1976, whose strength and guidance made a great impact on so many lives. Every Mt. Carmel grad seems to have his own anecdote about a memorable meeting with Bro. Lawrence. Ask Chris Herrera to tell you the one about when Brother made him sweat it out about the note from him mom - you’ll love it!

The comments made by Sister Kathleen, who as many of you know is an alumna of St. Mary’s Academy, were priceless. She took us back to the day, remembering her teen years, and how the rowdy Carmel boys always hung around St. Mary’s girls. Board member Diane Dianda teased her that after seeing the Carmel boys she had to choose from, she became a nun! On a more serious note, Sister Kathleen went on to tell us about having attended the MCAF All-Class Reunion a few years ago, where she saw the level of energy, enthusiasm and dedication all of you have to the schools of inner-city Los Angeles. She took that occasion to write to some Carmelite friends of hers to compliment, congratulate and honor them for the great life skills all Carmel grads received. She told us how proud all the Carmelites who taught at Mt. Carmel High School would be to see all of you who are living true to what you were taught:

Your Carmelite education is not just for you, but to enable you to give to others.
