I n DIGIBIS a company that is always attentive to the needs of Spanishlibraries a module of archival descriptions has been developed in ac-cordance with ISAD(G) and EAD standards to deal with archival collec-

tions that are very often deposited in librariesThese are documentary collections especially photographs which can-

not be catalogued piece by piece using bibliographic description tech-niques they require an archival description since they are collections thathave a specific producer The relationships between writers and publishersare very noteworthy in this collections

Seven years ago DIGIBIS developed this archive module to describe twoimportant collections that once digitized wereintegrated into the Digital Library of Castilla-LaMancha these were the Word Archive made upof digital objects in audio format and the ImageArchive mainly photographs

Carmen Martiacuten Gaite Archive

In 2017 a project with the same characteristicswas carried out which involved a new version ofthe archives module within the DIGIBIB library

management programme This is a description of the legacy of theCarmen Martiacuten Gaite archive nearly 1500 documentary units that havebeen catalogued by DIGIBIS in accordance with the archival structures andthe ISAD(g) and EAD rules

The Digital Library of Castilla y Leoacuten has added this file to its website onthe Internet and has set it up as just another microsite allowing us toexplore the fantastic legacy of one of the most important writers in the his-tory of Spain

With this module of archival descriptions that is fully integrated in thedigital library DIGIBIS provides an indispensable tool for the archival pro-cessing of the collections that the libraries hold and to enhance the visibilityof the archives through the websites and the OAI-PMH repository of theDIGIBIB application which makes them accessible to Hispana Europeanaor OAIster

EUROPEANA

T he Europeana Data Model (EDM) succes-sor to Europeana Semantic Elements(ESE) is currently used by Europeana to

structure and represent the data provided by theinstitutions (descriptions rights semantic webelements location of digital objects etc)

Just as Europeana is constantly growing andevolving the EDM system is regularly reviewedand improved In October 2017 the upgrade of Eu-ropeana Data Model (EDM) to version 528 ldquoDefi -nition of the Europeana Data Model 528rdquo waspublished together with the new 24 version of thedocument ldquoEuropeana Data Model Mapping Gui -delinesrdquo

V528 was published in October 2017

On this occasion the changes introduced by thedocument in its 528 version are

bull New recommendations in some EDM elementsfor example it is recommended to use the ISO 8601standard for dates combine the use of edmbeginand edmend use not only wgs84_poslong but alsowgs84_poslat use skosprefLabel versus skosalt-Label

bull The use of the obligatory elements is clarifieddccoverage is no longer obligatory as property ofProvidedCHO (dctype dcsubject dctermsspatialand dctermstemporal are maintained)

bull The use of the language tag is recommendedfor most properties is recommended includingthe recommendation of a dclanguage for non-linguistic content

bull The dctype property is added to edmWebRe-source

bull The value of edmcurrentLocation ischanged before it could appear 0 or many timesnow it can only appear 0 or once

These changes to version 528 of the Euro-peana Data Model will allow among other thingsthe new Europeana collections in reality mi-crosites dedicated to on the one hand manus -cripts and on the other hand periodical press

Therefore these modifications are very impor-tant for Spain since our wealth in terms of collec-tions of handwritten works and periodical press isconsiderable as evidenced by the fact that theVirtual Library of Historical Newspapers is thelargest contributor through Hispana

T he 2017 Europeana General AssemblyAGM was held on 6 December 2017 at theLeonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and

Technology in Milan This year it has been devotedto the impact of culture on society The presenta-tion was given by Merete Sanderhoff President ofthe European Network Association who ex-plained this yearrsquos theme

Then Professor Pier Luigi Sacco introducedwhat he calls the ldquo30 culture paradigmrdquo Accord-ing to this professor a new approach to the valuesthat have been created and an updating of exist-ing policies is necessary since culture nowreaches more areas and has a much wider socialimpact on issues such as innovation well-beingsustainability social cohesion learning socialidentity or social entrepreneurship

After him there were 10 speakers chosen in ad-vance who presented their ideas for creation ofvalue projects including the Transcribathon proj-ect presented by Frank Drauschke This is acrowdsourcing initiative that was initiated at the2016 AGM in Latvia for the transcription and an-notation of the Europeana 1914-1918 collection

Afterwards the heart of the General Assemblyas such took place The President showed themost important activities of 2017 and set out thepriorities for 2018 Members approved both the fi-nal and financial reports for 2017 and the interimbudget and business plan for 2018

Wikidata the control of semantic authorities

I n 2012 the Wikipedia Authority Control Inte-gration Proposal was launched for the use ofVirtual International Authority File (VIAF)

identifiers on Wikipedia especially in biogra-phies which meant adding these identifiers toWikipedia articles and refining the Template Au-thority Control extending its use to hundreds ofthousands of articles

The ldquoTemplate Authority Controlrdquo which wascreated in 2009 within the framework of theDeutschsprachige Wikipedia aims to automati-cally add a series of identifiers in various data-bases taken from Wikidata to the bottom of thearticles

In 2015 the WikidataWikiProject Authoritycontrol entry made clear its interest in the au-thority files of cultural institutions ldquoWikidatapays a lot of tribute to authority control linking toall kinds of datasets and databases with variousIDs The holy grail of every GLAM worker Sum ofAll People with links to their Works is comingaboutrdquo

Currently Wikipedia articles and pages thatare related to authority file identifiers and othersources have grown significantly and continue todo so If the initial proposal for the interrelation-ship between Wikipedia and VIAF was people-centred and in the Wikipedia in English this pro-cedure has been gradually extended Wikipedia inSpanish began to offer this information in 2016and is currently present in people entities worksand cultural assets

The Polymath Virtual Library of the IgnacioLarramendi Foundation is dedicated to the en-richment of authorities and aspires to be presentas a source of control of Wikipedia authorities

A s announced in issue 14 of DIGICLIC Ci-conia has been harvested by Europeanathrough Hispana In the second half of

2017 6805 records were harvested representingan enrichment of almost 30

That is to say thanks to the application of stan-dards when digitizing Ex-tremadurarsquos bibliographic her-itage which has resulted in theimplementation of an OAI-PMHrepository and the metadata ofthe European Data Model(EDM) ontology almost 7 thou-sand works that make up thisbibliographic heritage enjoyexceptional visibility not only inExtremadura and Spain butalso in Europe and the worldthanks to the presence of thisExtremadura heritage in His-pana Europeana and OAIster

Manuscripts incunabula andbooks from Extremadurafrom the 16th 17th and 18thcenturies

These 6805 records includemanuscripts incunabula andbooks from the 16th 17th and18th centuries For example the Legenda aureaprinted in 1478 or a manuscript found among the

papers of Juan Pablo Forner With this considerableincrease the bibliographic heritage of Extremaduraachieves enormous visibility and indicates the bestway to incorporate digitized bibliographic heritageinto the Digital Library of Extremadura and throughHispana to be consulted in the virtual library of theEuropean Union Europeana

All this without ever losing sight of the fact thatthrough the OAI-PMH repository available to theDigital Library of Extremadura with the DIGIBIBapplication its heritage is also harvested as is thecase with Hispana and Europeana by OAIster and istransparently incorporated into WorldCat that isalways and in all cases without having to resort tosecond actions which also avoids duplication

T he Virtual Library of Historical Press(BVPH) was upgraded in July 2017 to ver-sion 92 of the DIGIBIB library management

software DIGIBIS has followed the instructions ofthe staff from the Subdirectorate General for Li-brary Coordination of the Ministry of EducationCulture and Sports to adapt the new changes tothe BVPH with small improvements that havetaken place throughout the year

We have improved web designwith this new 92 version

The design of the website has been improved withthis version allowing a clearer and more attrac-tive browsing for the user by rearranging the ele-ments that appear on it The menu items for ex-ample now appear horizontally aligned under theheader of the website and the icons that give ac-cess to social networks are placed under themenu line and therefore at the top so that even ifthey are discreet they can be clearly seen

Changes to the Website also affect the mi-crosites which may include for example thehome page a carousel of recommended workslists of authors titles places etc as can be seenfor example on the Underground Press microsite

Thanks to the new content manager Virtual Li-brary administrators can easily manage news andstatic web pages including microsites

Improvements in management services

The new version has also meant small improve-ments that increase the quality of service such asthe management of large PDF files or the im-proved generation of BibTeX references as wellas the adaptation to the MARC21RDA formatwhich means an improvement in the generationof links and the possibility of browsing throughany link to Web resources in any field

In recent months new publications have beenadded to the Virtual Library of Historical Newspa-pers from the magazine Ritmo the AECID li-brary the Museum of Anthropology the Museodel Traje the Municipal Library of Santander thePublic Library of the State of Cadiz the HistoricalArchive of Gandia the Editorial Diario de BurgosSAU and the State Public Library in Burgos

With these latest additions the Virtual Libraryof Historical Press now has 13 million digitizednewspaper copies corresponding to 2369 news-paper titles published between 1777 and 2016

VIRTUALLIBRARIES

T he DIGIBIB application is a fully consolidatedlibrary management program with manyyears of experience that logically is based on

the MARC21 format as it is aimed at libraries How-ever it is very common for libraries to also have anattached or related file and to be interested in digi-tizing it in order to make it available to users ontheir website in the same way as the rest of theircollections This has been the case with some of theinstitutions using the DIGIBIBIB software

For these cases DIGIBIS has developed anarchive module completely integrated in the DI-GIBIB application

As it is a library management software DI-GIBIBIB works as we have already mentionedwith MARC 21 but if it is integrated with thearchives module it allows work to be carried outin ISAD(G) and the records to be viewed in ISAD(G)and EAD(G) formats both in the application itselfand on the Web

The module has two major advantages on theone hand it allows both archival and libraryrecords to be managed with the same softwareand on the other hand it shares the same au-thority base thus reducing time and effort andavoiding duplication In addition all authorityrecords can be enriched with Linked Open Data(LOD) if the corresponding module is available Byadding this module to DIGIBIBIB authorityrecords can also be displayed in EAC-CPF andISAAR(CPF) formats

Likewise records will benefit from DI-GIBIBIBrsquos OAI-PMH repository which will allowrecords to be harvested by Hispana and Euro-peana As an example we will mention the Digi-

Archive module in the DIGIBIB library application

Completely integratedinto DIGIBIB Allows you to work in ISAD(G) and view in EAD and Dublin Core

NOTICIAS

T enWe are pleased to announce that DIGIBIShas received a new AENOR certification inR+D+I and its corresponding Motivated Re-

port from the State Secretariat for Research De-velopment and Innovation of the Ministry of Econ-omy Industry and Competitiveness Nine certifi-cations have already been received and all ofthem have been reported in DIGICLIC

This year 2017 DIGIBIS presented the projectldquoHarvesting and reconciliation of open datardquo withthe acronym RECONCIHUB The project corre-sponds to the work done in 2016 and is related tosemantic enrichment through the use of novelSemantic Reconciliation

This is a three-pronged project as it deals withthe data and metadata that underpin computerapplications with particularly innovative technolo-gies the process is also carried out in such a waythat it can be incorporated into a complex systemThe three projects to which we refer are

bull Integration of METSEAD This project has in-tegrated the encoding and transmissionstandard for digital objects (METS) accordingto the EAD (Encoded Archival Description)This is a novelty not only in Spain but alsoworldwide The first METSEAD profile is nowavailable on the Library of Congress website

bull New functionalities for DIGIHUB develop-ments have been undertaken to provide newfunctionalities to our DIGIHUB applicationdedicated to the harvesting of metadata andimplemented in projects as important as His-pana Americanae Galiciana and CiconiaDigital Library of Cultural Heritage of Ex-tremadura

bull Semantic Reconciliation The good practicesof Semantic Reconciliation developed from

Open Source applications and processed bythe Departments of Innovation and Informat-ics of DIGIBIS are also innovative SemanticReconciliation allows the semi-automaticlinking of data to other Linked Open data(LOD) sources available on the Web Thusthanks to this technique the raw data thatmake up a file are massively processed tostructure them and link them to all kinds ofinformation sources on the Internet The firstresults of these techniques can be seen inthe authorities of the virtual thematic and au-thor libraries of the Ignacio LarramendiFoundation which have been enriched withthe vocabularies datosbnees VIAF FASTDBpedia and Wikidata among others

These three projects make up a complex sys-tem since despite having different digital typolo-gies they are perfectly integrated which makes iteasier for our applications (DIGIBIB DIGIARCHDIGIMUacuteS y DIGIHUB) to use them as if they werea whole

EDITORIAL
