    YOUR NATURALISTGUIDES*

Nicolas DUBREUIL - Expedition LeaderNicolas fell in love with the region to such an extent thathe wrote an ethnology thesis on it. The Antarctica Polarexpanses have no secrets for this Expedition Leader.Armed with his experience, Nicolas has been workingwith Compagnie du Ponant for nine years now, helpingthe captain plan routes and produce a photo of yourcruise. He is only too delighted to share his memories

and knowledge."Sublime Grimsey Island, where I organised a shore visit,I can still hear the cries of a million Arctic Sterns gatheredin the mist."

Naturalists, geologists, lecturers and experienced guides, our team of well-known professionals are the ideal companionsto have as you explore this little known territory.

Didier DROUET - Expedition LeaderIn 1985, Didier DROUET accompanied an Arcticexpedition, whose objective was to cross the Greenlandpolar ice field. His knowledge of the environment underextreme conditions brought him to work with the FrenchMinistry for Overseas Regions. He wanted to share hisknowledge and enthusiasm for the polar regions andspecializes as a naturalist and guide for cruises to

Greenland and Spitsbergen. During your cruise, he willaccompany small groups in Zodiac dinghies, to theheart of territories that are both wild and fascinating.

Alain BIDARTPassionate about the Antarctic and Polar wildlife, Alainworks with the International Polar Foundation. He hasbeen involved with numerous educational and expeditionprojects, accompanying climbers to the heart of theice sheet. Keen to share his knowledge of the regionswildlife, he is now a naturalist - guide and speaker onour cruises."One morning, we were sailing towards the twoDiomedes, aboard LAUSTRAL. What a joy to be theonly craft amongst a group of sea lions, heading to andfrom the sea at the heart of a natural amphitheatre wherethey gather in their hundreds!

Sophie FAVROLTAn Art Historian and qualified tour guide, Sophiedeveloped an interest in the Vikings and this led her tothe Far North - Norway, Iceland and Greenland - aswell as to the countries of the Baltic Sea. For the last four

years, her appreciation of extreme destinations has seenher accompany our cruises to the Antarctic region.

What moves me in the Arctic is the feeling that Historyis just as well preserved there as Nature. What we seeis exactly what the explorers of the 19thcentury lookedupon.

Raphal SANNaturalist-Guide since the age of 15 years oldand passionate about nature, Raphal graduated inhydrobiology. Having worked for various naturalistassociations and taken part in several expeditions, he isnow a guide and speaker on our ships. This year will behis sixth season on board our ships in the Polar Regions.I will never forget my encounter with a truly gigantic

tabletop iceberg, so huge that it took two hours forLE BORAL to sail around it!

Jos SARICAFrom an early age, protecting Nature has been atrue vocation for Jos. He trained as a zootherapistin Quebec then studied the Belugas of Saint-Laurent.Fascinated by marine mammals, he has published manyarticles in international scientific reviews and he hasbeen a naturalist guide specialising in cetology on polarcruises since 2009."Once again today, emotion overwhelmed me when Ithought of the huge fin of the Right whale emerging fromthe water just a stones throw from our Zodiac, andwaving gently in the air as if to say hello...

    ARCTICWILDLIFE

BELUGA - White SeaIn the cold, deep waters of the Arctic region and the White Sea, set outfor a unique encounter with the indolent beluga, whose name in russianis "beloye" meaning the white one. Growing to some 5 m in length, this sociable animal is much bigger than its dolphin cousins but smallerthan the whale family. Its ghostly silhouette, immaculate colour and bluntnose make the beluga unique amongst cetaceans. This peaceful mammaltravels in groups of 20 members, moving in gentle, ondulating strokesand enjoys lazing at the surface of the water. To better find its waythrough the veritable maze of submerged ice channels that characterizeits habitat, the white dolphin without wings, as it is known in Inuit, boasts one of the most sophisticated sonars of all the cetaceans.

    POLAR BEARS - Spitsbergen

As a symbol of the power and the fragility of the Far North, the polarbear is a source of fascination for its immaculate fur coat, its calmelegance and its mysterious aura. Whilst the Lord of the Ice floes weighsjust a few hundred grams when born, a fully grown male can weigh800 kg and is relatively solitary, endlessly roaming the ice of the ArcticCircle in search of ideal hunting and fishing sites. An excellent swimmer, the polar bear has partially webbed feet which allow it to venture intodeep water, and its fur is adapted to underwater excursions. Onedistinguishing feature is that it is the only bear species not to hibernate, with the exception of females looking for the best place to give birth. "Ifyou know what the bear is going to do, you know more than he does..."(Inuit saying).

    ARCTIC FOX - Greenland

This confident and fearless animal lives in the snow and the Tundra ofGreenland, Iceland and Spitsbergen, where it adapts like a chameleonto its icy environment. Its coat is white in Winter, when it digs dens in thefrozen earth to protect itself from the cold and feed its family. It tends toshadow polar bears across the ice floes to make the most of their strength

and protection. In Summer its fur turns grey, and this mobile, active animalroams the lush Tundra stocking up on food for the Winter. Scandinavianlegend tells that the arctic fox brings the Aurora Borealis, the spectacularlight show of polar nights. In ancient finnish, Aurora Borealis means "foxfire".

    11/54

    NARWHAL - Baffin Bay

Also known as the "Unicorn of theSea", the narwhal are toothedwhales with quite astonishing

characteristics. They mainly live insmall groups of 10 - 20 membersin Baffin Bay, but when looking fora winter home the groups cometogether and can reach formationsof up to 1,000 specimens. Thiswhale of the arctic sea, with itsdark colors and renowned agility,is easily recognizable because themales boast a huge helical tusk. Thelong, spiral, ivory protrusion canreach up to 3 m in length, which is

half the length of the animal itself.

    REINDEER - Chukotka

This majestic animal of the Far Northresembles a deer and has antlersthat in some males can span 1.5 m

and weigh 10 kg. In Summer, herdsmany hundreds strong roam the wildlandscapes of the Tundra, feeding on

young plants and willow leaves. Thethick hair of its coat protects it from thecold and the icy waters of the rivers.A nomadic people, the Chukchi, havesuccessfully domesticated this wildanimal. As they move their huge herdsfrom one grazing ground to another, these reindeer farmers may well cross

    your path.

    WALRUS - Kamchatka Peninsula

Its latin name, Odobenus rosmarus, means "tooth walking sea horse", itcan weigh more than a ton and likes

nothing better than soaking up the raysof the sun. But the walrus has othercharacteristics; it is a marine mammalwhose agility and dexterity can bequite impressive. A particularly loyalanimal, it prefers to live in groups andits communication is an art form. Thecries and barks of walruses can becompared to a fervent song that ringsout across the shores, ice floes andother ice banks where it likes to linger.During their daily meetings, the master

of ceremonies of these "Arctic Singers"moves to the center of the group, watched by the younger memberswho remain on the outer areas.

SEA OTTER - Kamtchatka - Kuril Islands

The sea otter, with its long, streamlined body and brown fur, is the smallest marinemammal in the world. It can grow up to 1.5 m in length and this inquisitive animalhas made its home in the coastal regions of Kamtchatka and the Kurils. Perfectlyadapted to the marine environment, this charming rodent is also the only otter able

to spend many months at sea without returning to land, taking shelter during stormsat the heart of the reefs. While the sea otter prefers to live near to the shore inshallower waters with rocky beds, this is more because of its dietary preferencesthan any fear of the open sea. The diminutive carnivore feeds on crabs, sea urchinsand fish. Under each of its powerful forepaws it can stock the food it gathers duringits dives, as well as the stones that it wields like weapons. You can see sea ottersfloating gently on their backs or wrapped around giant seaweeds, which help holdthem in place while they feed or sleep.

On the edge of the Arctic Circle, between vast glaciers and the craggy cliffs of vertiginous fjords, theNorwegian Far North gives you access to the Kola Peninsula and the shores of the White Sea in Arctic Russia.

We invite you to sail aboard LAUSTRAL and discover the most secret regions of the Russian Far North, atthe gates of Murmansk, in the heart of the Solovetsky Islands, a natural reserve listed as a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site.

A strip of land delicately placed on the sea, the Kola Peninsula offers travellers a landscape of anastonishing, austere beauty, made of tundra, forests, lakes and rivers. Covering nearly 100,000 km, there are

two marvellous natural phenomena linked to this stretch of land: the midnight sun in Summer and the AuroraBorealis at the beginning of Winter. This is when a dark light shines in the sky, blending the milky gleam of themoon with the sparkle of the stars, against a backdrop of snowy landscapes.

It is at the heart of the Russian Arctic that the land, 85% of which is covered in ice in Winter, reveals itselfmajestically in Spring, with the emergence of a horizon of captivating clarity. When the mist rises abovethe White Sea, the silver domes of the Solovky Monastery sparkle under the pale daylight.

TROMSTroms is a city of the Norwegian far North, a former whale-fishingcapital surrounded by still unspoiled nature and home to a richarchitectural heritage steeped in history. Today nicknamed the Parisof the North, Troms is a young and vibrant city that has successfully

preserved its authentic charm, surrounded by the snowy peaks that formthe decor of this boreal region also known as The Gateway to theFar North.Do not miss the most beautiful example of contemporaryscandinavian architecture: the Arctic Cathedral, built like a lighthouse, facing the old city. This religious structure has remarkably bold lines, evoking a great white ship. Its architecture symbolises the power ofPack Ice in the arctic seas and includes a very original glass mosaic.

WILDLIFE IN THE WHITE SEAThe deep waters of the White Sea are home to a wide diversity ofmarine wildlife, notably the very elegant and dazzlingly white beluga,

which comes here to reproduce and raise its young. Also known asthe white whale (beluga meaning white in Russian), the Beluga isa toothed cetacean which can grow to up to 6 m long and weighnearly a ton. Living mostly in small groups of 20 to 100 individuals,it possesses one of the most sophisticated sonar system of all thecetaceans. In Winter, when it swims under the ice floe, if the layer is

no more than 15 cm thick it will break the ice with its head in order tobreath. Belugas are very vocal animals and produce a wide variety ofsounds. The whalers of the 19thcentury used to write about the soundsand whistles of the beluga that they could hear through the hulls of their

    wooden sailing ships.

THE NORTH CAPE: "THE ROOF OF THE WORLDSet sail towards the mythical North Cape, with its polar landscapesand unspoilt, virgin nature. Located on the island of Magery, theNorth Cape is the most Northerly point of Continental Europe, lying some 307 m above the Arctic Ocean. When you sail aboardLAUSTRAL and pass the 71stparallel, the sight of this strip of land, battered by the waves and wind, is breathtaking. The Sami (alsoknown as Lapps) already considered the Nordkappas a uniquesite. From May to July when the clouds cover the Ocean with a thickcelestial cloak, when the midnight sun is at its lowest on the horizon,it is one of the most magical places on Earth. It is impossible to travelany further North on the European Continent; you are at the end ofthe world.

SOLOVETSKY ISLANDSNestled in North-Western Russia in Onega Bay, the SolovetskyIslands are a protected nature reserve dating back more than4,000 years, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since1992. The source of some of the finest ancient legends, theSolovetsky Islands reveal a horizon of captivating beauty and

clarity. When the mist rises above the White Sea, the silver domesof the Solovki Monastery sparkle in the pale daylight, competingfor prominence with the fortified towers. Built in the 16thcenturyby monks, this medieval structure is surrounded by high walls, reminiscent of the imposing silhouette of the Kremlin in Moscow. The Northern lights put on a fantastic show when the white nightsof June surround the citadel with a thousand lights, the Summer sunshining through, bathing the massive monastery fortress in gold:a perfect show...but also a diabolical sight, as this was the mostbeautiful and most terrible of stalins gulags.

ARKHANGELSKThe town of Arkhangelsk has distant origins that link it asmuch to russian polar history as to the fervent orthodoxreligion. The city was built in 1584 on the orders of TsarIvan the Terrible, who wanted to establish commerciallinks with England. What had been a tiny fishing villagethus became the first and only port in the White Sea.Many luxurious textiles, such as velvet and satin, wereimported whilst linen, hemp, wax and wood left theshores of the Dvina for Europe. Arkhangelsk was alsothe departure point for the first polar expeditions in the16thcentury, led by the Pomor settlers of the Arctic whosailed across the cold sea towards Western Siberiaand Spitsbergen. Arkhangelsk today is lined with wideavenues, occasionally interrupted by surprising clustersof very old wooden homes.

THE NORTHERN FJORDSTake a deep breath...travelling in Norway means plunging intoa world where water is everywhere, where solid land has to benarrow and attractive to claim its right to existence. At the heartof the Northern fjords, in the region of Trms, only the lands ofSvalbard separate you from the North Pole. Scattered with islands, the imposing relief protects the country from the Arctic storms. Itis here, in this central region, that for two months of the year thesun never sets. In the footsteps of Francesco NEGRI, the first manto have sailed in this remote region of Scandinavia, set off for

a journey to fjords with strange names, sinuous canyons andlimpid waterfalls In his famous diary of his travels, Viaggiosettentrionale, he describes a bizarre encounter with a marinemonster from norwegian folklore, the Kraken. Do not miss thisunique journey to the heart of an unspoiled region that has firedthe imagination of many great explorers.

It was durig his secod expeditio to the Arctic i 1596 that the Dutch explorer, Willem BAREnTZ, set footon the Southern part of the Svalbard Islands, on an island he named Spitsbergen for the steep peaks thatdominate the landscape of this desert of ice.

When LAUSTRAL reaches the craggy coastline of this last landmass before the North Pole, the sea lays outits armour of thick and luminous ice, and time seems to stretch to infinity, with day not wanting to give wayto night. The deep valleys with their vertiginous sides and the gigantic glaciers offer a breathtaking sight totravellers, which was once very popular with trappers. With their rims of iridescent glaciers, the fjords openonto unspoiled, virgin landscapes where the flora and fauna seem untouched by the passage of time. Let yourimagination run free during the days at sea in the midst of this vast icy expanse.

LAUSTRAL then charts a course South, heading towards Iceland, the land of fire and ice. We invite you toexplore this extraordinary region at the heart of the North-Western fjords, where colonies of puffins soar tothe summits of the chiselled cliffs. Iceland was created from the eruptions of the earth and deploys a quiteremarkable rainbow of colours, from jet black to obsidian to a palette of tawny browns, rhyolite and the tendergreen of the meadows bordering the cliffs. Beaches of black sand, petrified lava seas, geysers, barely dormant

volcanos, craters, fumaroles: you are on the island of volcanoes, erupted directly from the Oceans.

DISKO BAYAs she cruises towards Ilulissat, LE BORAL glides her way toDisko Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where she makes

a memorable entrance, carving a course through the magnificentglaciers, drifting icebergs, and magnificent yet fragile nature.

After a second night rocked to sleep by a few undulations, wewoke up near Disko Bay, facing the snow-covered peaks thatseem to be reaching for the sky which, itself only just woken andcovered in a slight haze, would soon turn a perfect blue, castingan extraordinary light on the nearby glaciers. At 10 a.m. ourCaptain invited us to the outside decks to admire these icy giants, standing tall like cathedrals and opalescent in the sunshine. An excerpt from the Captains log LE BORAL, August 2012.

NUUKWhen Erik THE RED, the impetuous Viking Chief banished fromIceland, landed on the coast of Nuuk, he discovered a welcomingand fertile land dotted with fjords. Though in the 10th century anentire population of Vikings came to join him and settle here, theisland has since become the refuge of Inuit populations. Nuuk islocated at the mouth of one of the largest fjord systems in the world, where the waters never freeze. The town spreads gently out towards

the Davis Strait and boasts a historic centre showcasing a particularlyrich National Heritage. The bright reds, blues, greens and yellowsof the houses contrast with the dark waters of Greenland and liftthe spirits of the locals during the Winter months. BAFFIN SEASurrounded by deserts of ice and snow swept by winds from a differentage, virgin lands from the dawn of the Earth, and the immensity of thePolar Oceans: here you are on Baffin Island. Take the time to lookaround you. Youll discover a secret share of a protected treasure:

polar bears, humpback whales, walruses, migratory birds and, as youround an opaque, blue and almost supernaturally opalescent glacier, you might even spot some languid belugas. Several outings by Zodiacare organised to take you as close as possible to this exceptionalfauna. As we cruise along the Baffin Sea, let yourself be transported bythe primeval beauty of these unique landscapes: steep cliffs, giganticfjords, multicoloured glaciers and icebergs...

THE AURORA BOREALISIt is impossible to witness such a beautiful phenomenon withouta sense of awe, wrote Robert SCOTT, an early-20th centurypolar explorer. According to Viking legend, the Aurora Borealisare caused by the armour of the Valkyrie, which emits a strangeflickering light as these warrior maidens fly off towards the palaceof Odin. Scientific theory explains that these mysterious phenomenaoccurring in the Far North appear when solar wind particles collide

with the gases in the Earths high atmosphere, creating a dazzlingexplosion of colours. These rainbows of orange, purple, emeraldgreen and ethereal pink dance across the night sky. They are oftenobserved onboard of our ships at this time of the year.

NUNAVUT TERRITORYThe Canadian Arctic Archipelago is a faraway, remote land of frozenearth and sea ice, where intense cold reigns. It is an inhospitable,

almost inhuman place and yet the Inuit people have lived here forthousands of years, deeply connected to their Land. This ancestralpeople survive in the polar solitude and these extreme conditions.

Walruses to starboard, less than 50 m away from the ship! announcesour Captain. Its 7.30 in the morning and without a moments hesitationwe slip on our parkas and head to the outside decks to observe thismarine mammal nicknamed the tooth-walking sea horse. Thoughmore than ten of them are swimming ahead of the ship, three adultmales move closer to us. They are so calm that it is hard to tell who isobserving whom and they greet us, revealing their magnificent ivorytusks. Journal of a Naturalist Guide.

TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARKAt the Northern extremity of the Labrador coast, a range of highbarren mountains with sharp precipices extending inland from thesea was known to traditional Inuit as the abode of the master spiritin their mythology.

This is how Ernest William HAWKES, a famous american

anthropologist, described the natural wonders of Torngat MountainsNational Park. The territory of the Inuit and their ancestors formillions of years, this is one of the rare places on Earth where it ispossible to observe such a wide range of Mother Naturesstartlingcreations: steep mountains, bare and desolate valleys covered inrocky tundra, deep-water fjords... This glacial landscape East ofthe Rocky Mountains boasts the tallest mountains in Canada. In thishighly accessible yet wild natural setting, visitors will have a uniqueopportunity to discover the Arctic environment and its exceptionalfauna. Many boreal and arctic species live here, such as thelegendary caribou, the red fox, the arctic fox, and the intimidatingtundra black bear.

THE ST LAWRENCE - SAGUENAYThe Saint Lawrence River is a prodigious waterway which opensthe Canadian Continent and was discovered by Jacques CARTIERin 1535. Some aboriginals used to call it the path that walks. This mighty river, which in parts resembles an ocean, is also anestuary and it is home to exceptional natural beauty, living to therhythm of the tides and sunsets. For close to three centuries, generations of Navigators tried to find a sea route that would connect the NorthAtlantic to the Pacific. This is the story of a mythical passage. Their names were John FRANKLIN, RoaldAMUNDSEN, Jean-Baptiste CHARCOT and Paul Emile VICTOR, and they were determined to conquer the lastunknown lands of the Arctic Continent - that frozen part of the world inhabited only by a few Inuit.

Because it is far from any inhabited lands; because the memory of the epic adventures of these intrepidexplorers lives on; and because of the mystery that still shrouds these distant lands, this extraordinary destinationis the preserve of travellers who dream of a complete change of scenery and of making unique discoveries.

We are inviting you to board LAUSTRAL and set sail for the Far North, well beyond the Arctic Circle, to alegendary, highly coveted maritime route: the Northwest Passage, the only possible shipping route between the

Atlantic and the Pacific. In Winter, this roof of the worldis transformed into a majestic white desert; whilstin Summer, for a few short weeks, the temperature rises enough for the ice to melt. Life reappears, nature isreborn, the mythical route is finally free and we can breathe in the unique scent of great adventure.

This passage doesnt exist, People have been looking for it for centuries and nobody has ever found it,Its a myth"...Since the 15thcentury, linking Europe and Asia by the sea became the grail of generations of explorersand adventurers: the search for a passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via the North Polehad begun. It wasnt until June 1903 that the Norwegian explorer Roald AMUNDSEN set out on the samejourney as his English peer, Sir John FRANKLIN. After three years making slow and dangerous progress in

extreme climatic conditions, his ship, the Gjoa, finally sailed into open sea on the other side of the Earth. The famous Northwest Passage really did exist. We are offering you the opportunity to embark on LAUSTRAL for a unique sea voyage connecting Europeto Asia, travelling in the wake of the great Explorers.

KING WILLIAM ISLAND - GJOA HAVENDiscovered by the Scottish explorer John ROSS in 1830, KingWilliam Island was named in honour of the reigning British King.In September 1903, Captain Roald AMUNDSEN was the first todrop anchor at Gjoa Haven, the only inhabited part of the island, where a few Inuit were the only sign of human life. The Norwegiansailor decided to overwinter here for two years, to attempt to find thelocation of the mysterious Magnetic North Pole. Roald AMUNDSENinteracted with the local Inuit to learn how to survive in these extremeconditions and freezing temperatures. We invite you to boardLAUSTRAL and set off on a journey to discover this small hamlet inthe Nunavut region, located just above the Arctic Circle. Do not missthis unique opportunity to discover these forgotten lands.

    HERSCHEL

The Canadian Arctic Archipelago is composed of a myriad of islandswith jagged coastlines and reveals landscapes you will only see at thisfar end of the world. Come and discover the small canadian islandof Herschel, a frozen paradise located in the Beaufort Sea just 2 kmoff the coast of the Yukon, within the Ivvavik National Park. During along mapping expedition in 1826, Sir John FRANKLIN was the firsteuropean to lay eyes on these unique places and their inhabitants, theInuvialuit, the nordic cousins of the Inuit. It was during this trip that henamed the island after one of his friends, John HERSCHEL, a brilliantbritish astronomer and scientist. Herschel Island is a landmark in the

West Arctic and has since served alternately as a whaling station, arelay station and a refuge for travellers. As Summer approaches, the

soft glow of twilight begins to break the opacity of the polar night, andthe hours of darkness get shorter and shorter Set off in the wake ofthe great explorers, to discover a remote land, its people and cultures, and experience unique moments and rare emotions in landscapes you

    will not find anywhere else.

CAMBRIDGE BAYDuring the 15th century, linking Europe and Asia by the seabecame the grail of generations of explorers and adventurers.Today, La Compagnie du Ponant is offering you the chance toexplore this region which still sees only infrequent traffic, but wherepassion and the spirit of adventure abound. Do not miss the Bayof Cambridge, one of the mythical sites in this region. Here, when

you look towards the horizon, way off on the other side of thefjord, you can see the silhouette of the Maud, Captain RoaldAMUNDSENs famous three-master. When she got trapped hereafter partially sinking, it was a chance for the famous navigator toexplore the Northeast Passage near the Siberian coast between1918 and 1920. Though today we can still see part of her hullbreaking the surface, a repatriation to Norway is being envisaged,to make the Maudthe centrepiece of a new Museum.

BEAUFORT SEAA little above the Arctic Circle, as LAUSTRAL leaves the Northbehind to reach the Arctic atmosphere, you will slowly cruisetowards the natural wonder of the Beaufort Sea. Here, in its deepwaters, is where the boreal region ends and the polar regionbegins. The Beaufort Sea boasts one of the largest varieties ofmarine mammals in the world, with seals, polar bears, walruses, bowhead whales, grey whales This sea is an essential habitat for

species that depend on ice, and is home to the largest populationof elegant belugas. It is also a legendary place where CaptainRoald AMUNDSEN finally managed to clear himself a path toreach the Bering Strait. It is easy to understand why many explorerswere fascinated by this Sea: to love these places and landscapesis to loathe restrictions and dream of the absolute.

KORYAK VILLAGEIt is difficult to imagine a more remote and isolated place than theKamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East. These distant landswere conquered in the 17thcentury by the cossacks, the Russiantsars elite horsemen, who chased away the local populations, including the valiant Koryaks. Today, the descendants of theseancient tribes have settled in russian towns and villages in the regionand to this day they maintain their ancestral beliefs and ways of

life. From the Uka river on the Eastern coast to Tigil in the WesternSea, the boreal forests are dotted with the traditional dwellings ofthese Siberian people. Although the russian revolution influencedtheir lifestyle, they still live off fishing and the breeding of reindeer, which according to them are sacred animals. Dont miss this uniqueopportunity to meet these friendly and welcoming people for anexceptional experience you wont forget.

THE DIOMEDE ISLANDSThe isolated and austere Diomede islands are situated in the middleof the Bering Strait, between Russia and Alaska, and between Asiaand the Americas. In 1867, when Russia sold Alaska to the UnitedStates, the two islands were separated by a geographical border. They now also find themselves in different time zones, since theInternational Date Line runs between Little and Big Diomede, whichare separated by barely 3 km of waves, fog and crosscurrents.2ndday of the cruise...As LAUSTRAL crosses the Bering Strait, she will reach the International
