Italian American Social Club Executive Board Members Executive Members

June 1, 2010 - May 31, 2011

Welcome to

2011 Members

Your board of directors wishes

everyone a happy and healthy

New Year.

Our Christmas Dance was a huge success. Can

you imagine our kitchen staff and our many volun-

teers carving 35 turkeys the last minute to make

sure that they were hot and moist? That difficult

task was done by our great chef Dan cooking in 7

different ovens and making everything come out

perfect. Thank you Tony, Sal, John, Christine,

Ben, Angelo and Paul who all assisted our Chef

Dan.

The decorations were done by Kathleen, Bubblina

and their committee. The ballroom looked beauti-

ful. Music by Vic Paci was great as usual. This

was our third sellout this year. It’s like old times

again.

Our Ballroom floor looks beautiful again thanks to

Robert Brooks and Pete Di Gulio who supervised

that project.

Our kitchen cleanup is progressing each day. Our

house & grounds committee, Chuck, Woody, Roy

& John are cleaning and painting daily to keep our

kitchen in great shape. They have also renovated

our office. It looks great – nice & roomy & clean.

Congratulations to our Bookkeeper Cheryl Moser

who is now our Office Manager and doing a fan-

tastic job.

Our next event is January 15th, ―Nite at the Races‖,

which promises to be a real fun night. Tickets are

moderately priced priced at $18.00 which includes

a complete chicken & roast beef dinner with all the

trimmings and 4 hour open bar. We will have 10

races on a huge stage screen with pari-mutual bet-

ting. Call the office or see Fanny for tickets.

Don’t forget our Monday night and Tuesday after-

noon Bingo. They both help support our club.

Don’t forget that your dues are due. Deadline is

January 31st.

Happy New Year again

Unfortunately, many members are not leaving tips for our

waitresses. Remember these girls have only one seating.

We are suggesting that each person served leave a minimum

$2.00 tip for their waitress. Leaving a tip for your waitress

is something you would ordinarily do at any restaurant when

having a meal. There is no reason that you treat our wait-

resses any differently than you treat other people who serve

you.

We still need a chairperson for festa.

Majority of board members agreed to no longer have memorial for deceased members. They had a hard time on where to draw the line as

to who should be invited, which would make it costly.

On Dec. 19th the board hosted a party for all employees and their spouses.

Purchase of beer coolers is being held off until next year.

CARNEVALE

The Carnevale festival derives from an ancient Latin feast called Lupercalia, a festival held around 15th of Feb-

ruary before the coming of Christianity. The feast was in honor of Lupa, the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus,

the mythical founders of ancient Rome. The priests, luperci (brothers of the wolf) conducted a ceremony dressed in goat-

skins. The feast began with the sacrifice of a dog and two goats. After the sacrificial rite, two priests approached an altar

where another priest took the knife used to kill the dog and goats, and anointed their foreheads with the bloody knife.

The anointer then took a wool cloth, dipped in milk, and wiped their foreheads and the knife. After the cleaning of the

forehead, the continuing ritual required the two priests to smile and laugh. Following that, the priests cut thongs of skin

(called februa) of the animals slain and ran along the city walls waving the februa. Spectators would position them-

selves close enough for the flailing februa to strike them. This ritual, many believed, would drive away evil spirits, en-

sure fertility in young girls, and young women, prevent sterility and ease the pains of childbirth.

It is interesting to note, at this point, that the month of February received its name from februa, and carnevale

from the Latin carnelevarum, to remove the meat. The English word is carnival, in Italian it is carnevale and pronounced

car–nay- vah-lay

This ritual continued until 494 A.D. when Pope Gelasius did away with the februa rite and replaced it with a

Christian ceremony of purification and sacrifice (Lent). However, the festivities prior to Lent spread through the Roman

Catholic world. Lent is a time of sacrifice and many interpreted the Latin word above as meat free.

Carnevale was mainly a Roman feast however, over time Venice became a city renowned for its Carnevale.

There, a unique cultural phenomenon developed, i.e. the rich people of the city randomly throughout the year wore

masks while engaging in questionable behavior. The Signoria, the city council, frowned upon these behaviors and passed

laws restricting the times during the year for the wearing of disguises. These were allowed between December 26, St.

Stephen’s Day, on up to and including the day before the beginning of Lent, Shrove Tuesday. Consequently, that day

became a greater day of merriment and indulgence than those leading up to it. That Tuesday is known by many names,

Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Martedí Grasso, in Italian, Mardi Gras, in French, both Italian and French terms mean

Fat Tuesday. Fat and meat, two major foods used before Lent, become taboo during the Lenten period. Shrove is an old

English word meaning to obtain absolution. Amongst many English-speaking countries, it is also known as Pancake

Day, the last day to cook pancakes since pancakes are cooked using fat.

Members of the poorer classes also wore masks, allowing them to mix unfettered with aristocrats. The mask was

a great equalizer for revelry. Today many consider Venice a leader in celebrating Carnevale; however, two other cities

are renowned for their celebrations, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. While traveling in Venice my wife and I inquired

about the activities of Carnevale, and we learned that the music for Carnevale is Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The main fes-

tivities of Carnevale take place in St. Mark’s square. The activities consist of parades of people in costumes, individuals

performing acrobatics; there is dancing, dining, musicians playing, orators, and people engaging in varied antics.

Our Heritage Committee sponsors a Carnevale and uses Venezia as its theme. The Carnevale di Venezia will be

in February as customary. Look about the club and you will find pictures displaying how people dress for Carnevale. It

is a costumed and formal affair; for those not wearing a costume, the wearing of a mask is encouraged. Members of the

Heritage Committee will dress in costumes and they invite everyone to join them. Tickets go on sale the first week of

January.

A Happy New Year All

It would be for approximately 4 hours per month (one morn-
