Message from Our President & CEO

Use in Annual report under CEO letter

Gateway Community Outreach is very pleased to report that this past fiscal year we assisted over 9,500 families and continue to service all of Broward County and one site in Palm Beach County. This is GCO’s nineteenth year and we have had a great year with new partnerships with local businesses and corporations. Some of the new partnerships are with Starbucks, Southern Coast Enterprises, Bj’s and Walmart. GCO is also finding connections through our fundraising and Networking events and received sponsorships through many of the attendees. Therefore, because of the success of these events we plan to have them at least four times per year. We are in the process of starting our donor base campaigns which will be headed by our new team member Natalie Tyler, who has a master’s degree in non-profit management and a great deal of experience in raising funds. We continue to offer financial seminars for our clients in partnership with Consolidated Credit Solutions Inc. This has helped raise awareness of our program to a new level. We will continue to speak at various functions as they arise and where we have been highlighted at their activity. Our program is consistently being evaluated for changes, new ideas and refinement.

Our goals have not changed in so far as we endeavor to help people enter into self-sufficiency and stabilization, also we could not reach this goal if it had not been for our devoted volunteers and staff. We thank all who continue to support Gateway Community Outreach. Please follow our work at www.gcoflorida.org

Our “Special Touch” program is designed to provide that “Special Touch” to those families, individuals and children who are in extra need during specific times of the year. The holiday season is suppose to be a joyous time, but for some it can be a depressing and lonely time of the year. Gateway Community Outreach provides that Beacon of “light” to those families who are experiencing times of darkness. Our Children Box Summer Distribution program provides our youth with a healthy food box just for them. Nutritious and fun food for those young appetites are provided. During the holiday season our “Special Touch” Holiday program provides the makings for a complete, healthy, fresh holiday meal for families to cook and enjoy with each other. During the month of December Gateway provides toys for our young tots, wrapping paper, gift cards and personal hygiene products for all members of the family. Gateway Community Outreach helps make the holiday season a joy-filled time of the year for the families we serve.

Brothers Matthew and Michael Carapazza implemented the “Hunger Hurts” food drive on Gateway Community Outreach’s behalf. Matthew a Senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School started his food drive collection at Starbucks, “I’m reaching out to you and hoping to make a difference…to feed the hungry” was his request. He then got his fellow classmates involved and they brought non-perishables food items to be donated to Gateway Community Outreach. The “Hunger Hurts’ Food Drive grew and grew. Some of the businesses that participated were Starbucks, PNC Bank, Wells Fargo, and You Fit Health Club. Matthew said “No matter how you say it, Hunger Hurts and if we join together we can make it alittle less painful for another in need.”

The Senior population, one of our main focus of Gateway Community Outreach, is categorized as those 50 years of age or older. Some seniors require only food, while others require direct assistance from GCO. With our extensive referral database we are able to provide Senior Citizens assistance with rent, water and other needs. We also connect our Veterans with the resources they are in need of. Nearly half (43%) of Gateway Community Outreach dealings with seniors results in “other referrals” where seniors can be directed to specific agencies to full-fill their needs.
