Caroline Hall worked as a television reporter and presenter for the BBC for 15 years before

moving to Berlin with her family in 2000. In 2005 she graduated from Winchester School of Art with a degree in Visual Art, (first class), and completed her Masters in Painting in 2007. Within a year she was taken on by emerging artist specialists degree.com in London. She held her first solo exhibition in London in 2009 after being selected as a finalist in the Agora International Art Prize in New York.

Caroline is regularly selected for group exhibitions and has staged several solo shows in East London’s celebrated Vyner Street. Her work is popular among collectors in the UK and abroad and was recently selected for the launch of Carnival’s flagship offices in Southampton. Last

year pixels paused 3 was shortlisted for the prestigious Threadneedle Prize. This year she will

be exhibiting at Weston Park in Shropshire, in London, and also in Hampshire. Caroline was

named as an Artist to Watch, by degreeArt last year, and is now part of their elite contemporary collective.

All my paintings reflect a life surrounded by the moving image. They explore the boundaries between video and painting, the traditional and the contemporary. The pixelsʼ series is driven by a process - a filming and editing sequence which allows me to deconstruct the digital image deliberately removing all trace of narrative. The resulting pixel video is then projected onto the surface of the canvas while I work.

More recently, for the ‘passing series’ I have been using video of filmed journies as a springboard. My subject matter is the fleeting moment, but my method of working means each painting takes days and sometimes weeks to complete. It is this pairing of opposites, the fact that I am attempting to make the transient tangible, that intrigues me.

With this series of photographs I am quite literally painting with light. By focusing on the colours and textures provided by nature - sunshine on frosted grass, light filtering through leaves - I am provided with a readymade palette. There is no trickery involved, no extensive digital processing, the images are the result of the simplest of camera gestures. A combination of capture process and pattern transforms an ordinary landscape into something extraordinary and instills a sense of dynamism into a subject which is essentially still.

These photographs are available as limited edition prints on archive paper or mounted onto aluminium.
