2 Introduction

Carousel is an established, family-run company, delivering outstanding, affordable childcare

and education to local communities. Our first setting, in Motspur Park, was opened in 1997

and caters for children between the ages of two and five years. Our second setting is in the

grounds of Aragon Primary School in Morden and is registered to care for children from

three months to five years. Our nurseries are open for fifty weeks of the year, between the

hours of 8am-6pm. We also manage an after-school club and holiday club in Aragon School

for children from four (must have completed one term in Reception) to eleven years of age.

Carousel Nursery, Aragon, employs a high-quality team of Early Years Practitioners with

qualifications ranging from NVQ Level 3 in Childcare and Education, to NVQ Level 6, BA

Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies. Our practitioners undertake regular training to

ensure up-to-date knowledge and guidance. We also take part in the government

apprentice scheme, supporting selected young people to start a career their chosen

profession.

The experienced and highly qualified staff are led by an exceptionally inspirational

management team. Together they fully involve parents, children and other agencies in their

continuous drive for improvement(Ofsted, 2015).

We acknowledge the formative, early years of a child’s life as crucial to their future learning,

development and life chances. The excellent staff team is dedicated to raising children’s

achievement through high quality teaching (Ofsted, 2015). We believe that every child

deserves the best possible start in life, helping them to develop into happy, confident,

sociable and independent young people. At Carousel we achieve this by working closely

with parents and families to ensure tailored care and education for each child, guided by

their own unique set of experiences, interests and needs. We embrace individuality,

equality and diversity; we value every child and their family, thus promoting a culture of

respect, confidence and a positive self-esteem.

All Carousel settings promote fundamental British Values.

Carousel Day Nursery works under the umbrella of the national Early Years Foundation

Stage (EYFS, 2016), which is guided by four themes:

A Unique Child Positive

Relationships

Enabling

Environments

Children learn and develop in different ways & at different rates

Every child is a unique, competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident & self-assured

Children learn to be strong & independent from a base of loving & secure relationships with parents and/or a key person

The environment plays a key role in supporting & extending children’s development and learning

The EYFS framework covers the education & care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs & disabilities

Curriculum, Planning and Assessment

The EYFS (2016) curriculum is based around seven areas of learning and development.

For children under two, we concentrate on three Prime Areas:

• Communication and Language

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Physical Development

These areas cover the knowledge and skills required to form the foundations of formal

learning. The Prime Areas develop through effective relationships and experiences,

supporting learning in all others areas, and remain fundamental throughout the EYFS.

The four Specific Areas of learning and development grow from the Prime Areas and provide important opportunities for extending knowledge:

• Literacy

• Mathematics

• Understanding the World

• Expressive Arts and Design

The quality of teaching across all areas of learning is consistently high. Staff precisely home

into children’s individuality and identify areas for development (Ofsted, 2015).

At Carousel Nursery we use regular observations of children as they play, learn and socialise to highlight their current interests alongside learning or development aims. These observations inform the children’s individual planning and help us to track their progress as well as identify specific needs. Planning is displayed both inside and outside of the playrooms, keeping parents informed and providing home learning ideas.

Reports and Reviews

Approximately ten weeks after entering the Baby Bears, Tigers or Penguins room, a review

of how a child has settled will be written and shared with parents. During this meeting, an

Individual Development Plan (IDP) will be devised to incorporate both home and nursery

perspectives. Children’s progress is monitored on local authority Early Years Outcomes

tracking sheets every six weeks and these are available to parents for their contributions.

Further review meetings are arranged every six months or before transitioning to a new

room/setting. IDPs will be reviewed every six weeks to ensure they are still current with

effective strategies. More frequent reviews and IDPs will be undertaken where appropriate.

After a child’s second birthday, a Two-year Progress Report is put together. This is a

statutory requirement of the EYFS and confirms a child’s readiness to engage with the

Specific Areas together with planning/assessment in all seven areas of learning and

development.

Outdoor Environments

Our children have access to a safe, enclosed garden every day, with a free-flow system in

place for Pre-school. Covered and shaded areas enable use of the garden in all seasons.

We also have access to the secure school field, where children delight in exploring the

large open space; going on nature walks or simply having a picnic under the shade of the

willow tree. Children are encouraged to take an interest in their world and care for nature

through activities such as bird-watching, discovering mini-beasts or growing flowers, fruit

and vegetables. As well as an artificially grassed section, slides and ride-on toys, the

garden hosts a playhouse and children’s shed, offering a wide choice of resources with

many learning, social and physical opportunities. Our babies have their own artificially-

turfed area where they can play, experience different types of weather and watch/interact

with their older friends and siblings.

The outdoor areas provide excellent opportunities to develop children’s physical skills

(Ofsted, 2015).

Snowy nursery garden and field Our artificially-turfed baby garden Children’s digging and growing area

Baby Bears

Our Baby Bears room provides a stimulating environment where our youngest children

independently explore, using their senses and growing mobility. Resources such as

treasure baskets promote heuristic play; low-level storage and displays keep everything

within sight and reach. As well as a Black & White area, there are inviting spaces to hide,

play, discover and rest. Within warm, homely surroundings, our Tiger Cubs experience

an array of natural resources as well as musical, creative and interactive activities to

ignite their senses, social skills and curiosity.

Children and babies thrive in this lively and stimulating environment (Ofsted, 2015)

Toddler Tigers

Our Toddler Tigers develop a thirst for learning as they independently investigate and

carry out self-selected activities with experienced adults on-hand to support their

education. Low-level units, with an emphasis on real and natural resources, enable the

children to lead their own play agendas and learning journeys. Children make sense of

their experiences through play, story-telling, songs and other creative means. Quiet

spaces such as the Tiger Den provide our Tigers with areas to be calm and relax,

concentrate on a task or chatter with their friends. Singing Tree sessions, marching bands

and dancing to a wide range of music are favourite activities with the Tigers! In this room,

we introduce language and social interaction groups, helping to support children’s

language acquisition.Staff are skilled at extending children’s communication and

language – they are highly effective in supporting toddlers’ early talking (Ofsted, 2015)

Pre-school Penguins

Our Pre-school Penguins enjoy a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities. They

are encouraged to make independent choices and develop their critical thinking. The

room has defined areas of learning and activities are changed throughout the day

depending on children’s interests, requests and learning adventures. Older children

become socially skilled, working together on agreed projects (Ofsted, 2015).Children are

regularly involved in musical activities, arts and crafts and opportunities to investigate,

discover and experiment with their ideas. There is access to a laptop and a range of ICT

equipment. Pre-school operate a free-flow system whereby children can choose to play

inside or outside as well as making good use of the school field and physical apparatus.

The children engage in daily Pre-school, Language and Social Interaction groups, where

fun activities help to prepare them for school.

A highly stimulating environment in all the children’s rooms fully supports their confidence to explore and investigate for themselves. They are constantly busy in active and meaningful play (Ofsted, 2015)

Settling

We understand the importance of children settling; feeling safe and comfortable in a new

environment. Therefore, we work with parents/carers to devise a settling programme that

caters for individual needs. All About Me books help practitioners and parents share

information such as feeding and sleeping routines, children’s interests and comfort

strategies. Each child is assigned a Key Person who will have the main responsibility of

caring, assessing and planning for them as well as building positive, working relationships

with the child, parents and family. We aim to make our nursery as homely as possible to

promote comfort and security together with a sense of belonging and trust for each and

every child and parent.

Staff have exceptional bonds with babies and children to give them security (Ofsted,

2015)

Parental Partnership

At Carousel we respect parents as their child’s first and most enduring care-givers and

educators. From settling and day-to-day care to assessing and planning, we include and

value parental input. It is important for children to witness the good relationships between

parents and practitioners. For Baby Bears and Tigers we complete Day Sheets each

session to provide parents with detailed information about their child’s time at nursery and

facilitate a two-way communication channel between the children’s worlds. This is

reinforced with Teddy Diaries, home observation sheets and regular parental feedback

opportunities. As well as daily hand-over discussions and our open-door policy, parents

are invited for regular reviews on their child’s progression.

Effective partnerships between nursery, parents and other outside agencies fully support

children’s welfare and learning needs (Ofsted, 2015)

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Our Local Offer details what we can offer children with SEN. A copy of the Local Offer is

available in the nursery reception area, on our website or can be emailed on request. Our

Special Educational Needs and Disability Policy can be viewed in our Welfare

Requirements Book at the front of the nursery. We have systems in place to support

early identification of children’s needs and work closely with parents (as well as outside

agencies where appropriate) to develop effective strategies and development plans.

Behaviour

We have a named practitioner responsible for behaviour in the nursery and we work with

parents for consistency. Behaviour strategies exist in each room and are age/stage

appropriate as well as taking into consideration individual children’s understanding and

needs. Through activities, circle times and good adult examples, our children learn to be

caring, thoughtful and accepting of others. Children are involved in decision and rule-

making processes, giving them a sense of self-worth, ownership and inclusion – because

of this, children’s behaviour is exceptional (Ofsted, 2015).

Outings and Visitors

We endeavour to provide our children with experiences to enhance their learning and

knowledge of the world. As well as arranged and trusted visitors, such as owners of

unusual pets or the police, we take the children out into the local environment, for

example, we may visit shops, the aquatic centre or go on a bus ride. Children interested

in animals have been taken to the farm or zoo and those demonstrating growing physical

skills may visit a soft play area or park with more challenging apparatus.

Older children make effective use of the wider challenging areas of the school to climb

apparatus (Ofsted, 2015)

Meals and Snacks

At Carousel Nursery our chef provides a wide variety of nutritious, balanced meals,

incorporating any special dietary requirements as well as favourite requests from the

children! In-line with our homely ethos, all staff eat with the children, ensuring a warm

and sociable atmosphere. Children are regularly involved in the making of their food, for

example, home-made pizzas or cheesy puffs for tea. As well as milk, a healthy snack is

served during each session – these consist of a range of fruits, salad, yoghurt or rice

cakes. Drinking water is available at all times. Our last inspection by the Food Standards

Agency rated us 5 (the highest rating for food and hygiene).

Policies, Procedures and Safeguarding

Our Policies and Procedures are available for parents and visitors to view at any time in

the nursery reception area. The welfare of all children in our care is paramount. Our

rooms, equipment and garden are assessed several times a day; new activities or outings

are also risk-assessed prior to engagement. In line with the statutory EYFS (2016)

requirements, we practise Safe Recruitment including DBS checks and Annual

Declarations. We have two named Safeguarding Officers and all practitioners are

committed to keeping children safe, healthy and happy. Children are taught about good

health, self-care and safety through example, stories, discussions and activities.

Staff’s first-rate knowledge of child protection fully protects children’s welfare and safety

(Ofsted, 2015).

Arrival and Collection

We welcome children into nursery from 8am (7.30am, by arrangement). We ask that

parents adhere to opening and closing times as we are not registered/insured to care for

children outside of these times. The nursery reserves the right to charge for late

collections - £5 for the first 1-5 minutes and £1 a minute thereafter. Only named,

authorised collectors on a child’s registration form will be permitted to collect that child.

Testimonials*

• My son really enjoys going to Carousel Nursery which as a working, single parent,

makes me feel less guilty! I know that William will be treated with kindness and

given comfort if needed and that the staff here really do care and involve the

children in their decisions. Every day the children do something different. My son

loves making lunch/dinner and then eating it! I know William loves dressing up and

it’s great to see his personality shine through when playing with his friends. One of

the best things is the garden/field. Because the children in pre-school have free-

flow they can run off lots of energy and enjoy the air without it being constricted.

There are so many toys and activities outside, William never gets bored! I know my

son is safe, happy and well cared for while at Carousel and that means I can work

without worrying and William can play and learn in a nurturing environment

(William’s Mummy)

• I like playing in the field. It’s big. I like all the grass. I cuddle with the grown-ups

(William, aged 3)

• When the sun comes up we get to play at nursery. I just love to play action heroes

at nursery. I always like dressing up like Batman – it makes me fly. The grown-

ups do nice things. They get toys out when you say and eat lunch with us (Rys,

aged 3)

• My daughter started at Carousel when she was 10 months old. Mila is now nearly

four and loves her nursery. When I want her to spend a day with me, Mila wants to

go to nursery. The staff at Carousel are amazing! They are very helpful, loving and

very welcoming. The activities that they do in the three different rooms are really

great. I love going for the review meetings to see all the photo’s, work,

observations and reports Mila’s keyworker has written. My husband enjoys looking

at the displays; always colourful and full of information. There is nothing that I

would change about Carousel Nursery! (Mila’s Mummy)

• I like to play with all my friends. I like to paint and play princesses outside (Mila,

aged 3)

Carousel Day Nursery. Safeguarding for Parents/Carers

At Carousel Nursery we work together to safeguard children. This means protecting their safety and welfare through policies, procedures and good practice. In-line with our commitment to parental partnerships, we aim to keep you informed and included in all aspects of the care and education of your child. With regard to safeguarding, this entails developing two-way open information sharing, trust and honesty. On a day-to-day basis this will involve telling each other about concerns, or accidents/incidents that have happened in the nursery, at home or elsewhere. This is standard procedure and, in-line with local authority expectations, will be recorded in order to protect you, us and most importantly, your child. We have outlined below, the basic expectations of the nursery and parents/carers – if you would like to read our full Safeguarding Children Policy and Procedures, you will find them in the Welfare Requirements folder in the nursery reception area, or a copy can be printed/emailed to you. Our Safeguarding Leads are Jayne and Debbie who are available to answer any questions, give advice or listen to your concerns. You may also speak to your child’s key person.
