In Gratitude

This recording brought together a collection of incredibly talented and utterly unique artists. My deep gratitude to Jayme and Robert for your passion and creative envisioning that made this collaboration possible.

A special thanks to David Weber at Airtime for his continued creative vision, collaboration and friendship.

All my appreciation to Gary, Hugh, Jordan, Joe, Moira, Natalie, Sumaia, Kevin, Jim, Krista, Dan and Chloe for contributing your endless talent and your exceptionally good hearts to this collection.

A special thank you to Gary for being such a fine companion and continuing collaborator on this strange and wondrous musical life.

Thank you to Kappy, Jill, Rick, Tim, Ericka, Mike and Lorel for your continued friendship, support and help in bringing these songs into the world. And appreciation to Mike for his introduction to Jayme Stone!

Thank you to my dear friends and family, Dad, Norma, Amelia, Ben and Greg for holding on to the other end of the slender thread that leads me home.

All my most heartfelt gratitude to Robert Meitus. “You’ve always been a cup of coffee, you’ve always been the cream. You’ve always believed that I was better than I could ever dream.”

A bit about the songs…

The songs that appear in this collection were written over the past three years in hotels, trains, long drives and airport gates. They were jotted down in coffeehouses, in my writing room and on walks in the woods with my dogs. They were inspired by good books and poetry, loss and regret, unguarded laughter, a gritty kind of hope and the luminous messiness of a human life.

Some of these songs grew out of conversation while traveling with pianist and good friend, Gary Walters. Some were inspired by my long time creative collaboration with playmaker, Richard Thomas, and the poetry written for Betty’s Diner: The Musical.

Many of the songs—including Help in Hard Times, You Can Do This Hard Thing, A Shovel is a Prayer, Three Feet or So and Sanctuary—emerged out of an ongoing creative/spiritual conversations with my dear friend Parker J. Palmer, and more specifically, for a spoken word and musical collaboration called, What We Need is Here: Hope, Hard Times and Human Possibility.

The Beautiful Not Yet We live in an ever accelerating goal-oriented world. It is easy to become distracted and restless. We are not who we were, and yet we are not who we will become. I went for a walk in early spring when the snow was gone but leaves had not yet budded. The light was clear and clean, falling totally unencumbered through the trees. Yes, summer was coming, lush and unsubtle, but in that moment I found myself grateful and in love with the quickening. Life is always lived between then and soon, right here and now, in the beautiful not yet. - Carrie

The Beautiful Not Yet

Spring is humming, Bits of something, A melody the simple part, A song that I once knew by heart.

Juniper, Wild Indigo, Foxglove, Lupine, Queen Ann’s Lace, Will be coming any day.

The restlessness, The quickening, The almost but Not yet.

Muddy boots, last year’s leaves Every spring that came before, All they were and something more.

The restlessness, The quickening, The almost but Not yet

Do you see, do you see, do you see it Take a breath, Oh, the restlessness, The beautiful not yet.

There’s a stirring, There’s sweetness, At the edge of in between. I feel it nearly trembling.

The restlessness, The quickening, The almost but Not yet.
