“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27) Jesus was about to die on a cross and yet He is telling His disciples that He is going to leave them His peace: how? Because Jesus, the Son of God, knew that death would not hold Him, and He would walk out of the tomb, spend forty days with His disciples after the resurrection, and ascend back to heaven. On the Day of Pentecost He would send the blessed Holy Spirit, who would impart to them this heavenly peace that the world could not give. How we desperately need the peace of Jesus today! We must make the Lord our delight and keep our minds and hearts stayed upon Him. (Psalm 37:4, Isaiah 26:3) When we try to find peace in this ungodly world we are going to be very disappointed. We were created in God’s image for His glory and to have fellowship with Him. We lose our Lord’s sweet peace when we drift away from Christ and spend most of our time focusing on pleasures, financial security, and materialism. When we think that we are facing difficult times, we need to remember what the disciples of Jesus had to face. The calling of Jesus was so powerful that they left their fishing jobs in Galilee to walk the dusty roads with the Jesus of Nazareth. Then after a little over three years of hearing His life-changing messages, seeing His supernatural miracles, and thinking the physical kingdom was about to appear, (Acts 1:6), He takes them with Him up to Jerusalem and dies on a tree. Try to imagine the hopelessness and despair their hearts must have felt! And even though they saw Him alive, just before He ascends back to heaven from the Mt. of Olives, He gave them the awesome responsibility of leaving their homeland, and taking the gospel of Christ into a world they had never seen before. How could common, ordinary men complete such a history-changing task? Because they would have His peace! The peace of Jesus gave them constant strength for what He had called them to do. The disciples had to face the pagan, Roman Empire and tell the people that Caesar was not God, Jesus was! Poseidon was not the God of the sea, Jesus was! Asclepius was not the God who could raise the dead, Jesus was! Because of the power of Jesus in their lives, they preached the message unashamed, knowing that they were giving the people the one absolute truth that could change their lives. Because they had the peace of Jesus, they went into the first-century world without assimilating to the culture. This is what we have to do today! The darker the world gets, the brighter our light needs to shine. The more trouble we see in the world, the deeper we can experience the peace of Jesus! When the Lord’s mission for the disciples was over, they faced physical death with the very same peace of Jesus. The very same mercy and grace that had called them, and had brought them through so many trials, would take them to be with Jesus. There is a huge difference in knowing and hearing this truth and applying it to our own lives. While the Almighty God of heaven is allowing judgment to fall on this evil world today, you and I can have the same peace that He gave to His disciples, even when we are facing death itself.
