Mayor Eric Garcetti and other city
leaders announced Tuesday the
expansion of Los Angeles’ sum-
mer youth jobs program.
Garcetti was joined by White
House Senior Advisor Valerie
Jarrett, Supervisor Mark Ridley
Thomas, City Council President
Herb Wesson, City Councilman
Joe Buscaino, The Walt Disney
Company Chairman and CEO
Robert Iger, and representatives
from Citibank at a 9 a.m. press
conference at YO! Watts, 1513 E.
103rd St.
“My first press conference as Mayor
was to announce my commitment to
double L.A.’s summer youth jobs pro-
gram to serve 10,000 Angelenos. To-
day, I am proud to announce we will
reach that goal, because we are work-
ing together, public and private, on
this strategic investment in our youth
and our future economy,” Garcetti
said.
“Too often, young people can fall be-
hind during the summer when school
is out. But our summer jobs program
makes sure summer is a time for
young people to get ahead by earning
a paycheck, job skills, and financial
education.”
The Walt Disney Company is partnering with the pro-
gram through a $1 million commitment.
“We applaud the mayor’s commitment to leveraging
the strength of both the public and private sectors to
serve the youth of Los Angeles,” Iger said. “Disney is
proud to play a leading role in this effort with a $1 mil-
lion donation to this year’s Summer Youth Programs to
create opportunities for thousands of young people to
gain skills and experience and participate in a wide vari-
ety of activities that will help them build bright futures.”
Companies interested in sponsoring or creating jobs or contributing funds, as well as youth interested in apply-ing for summer jobs should visit http://www.hirelayouth.org/Welcome.html

Succeeds’
Congresswoman Janice Hahn, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and Congress-
woman Grace Napolitano recently hosted, When Women Succeed, America Suc-
ceeds. “Today, women across the nation are facing unprecedented economic inse-
curity. Hundreds of women from across Southern California participated in our
forum, learning more about the issues and how we can address them. We talked
about equal pay, raising the minimum wage, family medical leave, and affordable
childcare. Our outdated institutions must change. My colleagues and I are taking
the stories we heard back to Washington to fight for an economic agenda that
works for everyone”, states Hahn

City of Carson Maintains Healthy Budget
Reserves
The City of Carson is in excellent financial condition. In the
last two years alone, Carson has added $12.8 million to its
reserves. The City plans to use some that money to build a trust fund for its future retiree medi-
cal costs and to pay for improvements to public buildings.
While the recession was tough on all cities, conditions have clearly improved and Carson is mov-
ing forward. In order to create jobs and develop brownfield sites like former landfills, the City
Council is looking to encourage foreign investment, which is already very strong in this region.
Rather than be reactive, the City is being proactive and looking for the best project for each site.
With the help of the business community and other government agencies, the City of Carson has
high expectations. Carson has achieved much success already. It is a part of a strong region and
is looking to an even brighter future each day.

T he first of a series of Symposiums brought by Each One - Teach One
and Friends. "Get into the College of your
Choice" was the theme at the sym-posium held in Inglewood CA. Each One - Teach One Alliance for Academic Access, Achievement and Success teamed up with Friends to share important information about changes coming to the SAT and the vast number of resources available through the College Board.
We were also blessed to have a "Super Parent" Renee Brown Brooks share her experience being involved in her children's educa-tional journey, and seeing them matriculate into an impressive list of colleges and universities around the country. She shared the re-sources that she use and strategies for parent engagement. Learn more at www.e1t1.org
The National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday ruled college ath-
letes are considered employees, a decision that moves Northwestern University football players a step closer to forming the nation's first college athletes' union. The agency was tasked with deciding whether the football players qual-ify as employees under U.S. law, and hearings were held in Chicago. The decision gives the players rights to unionize. "So proud of my teammates, Ramogi, lawyers, and supporters around the nation! This is a HUGE win for ALL college athletes!" Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter tweeted after the decision. The regional director of the NLRB directed a secret ballot election be held to determine whether the players should be represented by the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA). Northwestern University spokesman Alan K. Cubbage called the deci-sion disappointing. "While we respect the NLRB process and the regional director’s opin-ion," Cubbage said, "we disagree with it. Northwestern believes strong-ly that our student-athletes are not employees, but students. Unioniza-tion and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to ad-dress the concerns raised by student-athletes." Northwestern plans to appeal the decision, Cubbage said.

Gospel commentator Edna
Tatum passed away on
March 14 after suffering a
heart attack earlier this year.
Nationally known as ‘The
Voice,’ Tatum was a popular
emcee and gospel broad-
caster for more than 30
years.
Her ministry spanned several decades of hosting concerts and
narrating for gospel legends such as the Rev. James Cleveland,
The Fourth of Mary, the Rev. Daryl Coley, Albertina Walker, and
Kurt Carr.
In a 2011 Sentinel interview, she shared some of the most mem-
orable moments in her career.
“I will always treasure learning and growing in Christ during my
time with the great Rev. James Cleveland. Then, never will I for-
get performing live narration for Rev. Cleveland at Carnegie Hall,
at three McDonald’s Gospel Festivals and continuing to be a
guest host each year at the Chicago Gospel Festival, which at-
tracts more than 200,000 people,” recalled Tatum. Her visitation
and viewing was Tuesday, March 25, at 5 p.m., at Mount Moriah,
4269 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. A Tribute Musical
followed the viewing at 7 p.m.

Easy do-it-yourself East-
er: Fun Easter projects
for the whole family
(BPT) - The Easter bunny is right around the corner, which means chocolate eggs, chick marshmal-lows and stuffed bunnies will soon be popping up around the home. Celebrate with a build-your-own Easter basket with the kids for some quality time for the entire family. DIY doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated or difficult. Here are a few great ideas with some easy shortcuts to make it an enjoy-able experience for everyone.
The basket
It all starts with the basket. The egg hunt and basket fillings wouldn’t be complete without an Easter bas-ket decked out in bright spring col-ors. It’s not easy to spend hours making your own Easter basket, but you can still make it your own with custom Easter baskets from Personal Creations. Pick out the size, color pattern and design, and add your kids’ names to make it a personalized basket that can be from the Easter Bunny himself. Best of all, it comes with a fluffy plush bunny and Easter sweets to make it a complete package for the entire family to enjoy.
The eggs
Colored eggs are an essential part of
any Easter celebration. This year,
add a fun and simple twist to the
usual DIY egg coloring with a tissue
paper egg dye. Simply wet the eggs,
wrap it in brightly colored tissue
paper, and spray the eggs with wa-
ter to ensure all of the paper has
been wetted. Once the egg is dry,
kids will be able to easily remove
the tissue paper. Beneath, they’ll
find a perfectly dyed egg that carries
the appearance of stained glass.
The sweets
No Easter celebration is complete without
treats to sweeten the basket. Marshmal-
low chicks and chocolate eggs are a classic,
but adding a gourmet twist to the list of
everyday sweets can make receiving this
Easter basket an unforgettable experience
for even the adults in the family. For an
easy twist on the classic, ask kids to shred
leftover bits of wrapping paper left around
the house to make homemade Easter
grass, and add it to a simple Easter treat
pail. Then, fill the pail with Easter-themed
cake pops from Shari’s Berries for a festive
gourmet treat everyone can enjoy.
The fluff
Bunnies get all the attention during
Easter, but little chicks can be an
adorable alternative to add to the
basket. For this simple craft, ask chil-
dren to draw and color a picture of a
chick. Make sure the chick is facing
forward and not from a profile view-
point. They do not need to draw the
wings; those come later. When the
little artists are finished, cut the
chicks out. Next, help children trace
their own hands and cut these traces
out. Glue the traced hands to the
chick with the thumbs up, and just
like that, the chick has wings with a
familiar look.
The grownup basket
Grownups deserve some Easter fun
too. Forego the basket filled with can-
dy and design a fresh and colorful
take on the Easter basket. Start with a
classic wicker basket with liner and
add some fresh spring flowers to
brighten up the look. Fresh flowers
are a beautiful way to brighten any-
one’s day, and fresh, vibrant flowers
from ProFlowers make it easy to or-
der and arrange flowers quickly and
easily. Bright spring daffodils ar-
ranged in a pretty spread or 30 multi-
colored tulips hanging loosely out of
the basket is a great way to celebrate
Easter in an upscale way.
Ziggy Marley, April 8th, 8pm, Club Nokia
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Ziggy first
sat in on recording sessions with his fa-
ther when he was ten years old. Joining
with his three siblings to become The
Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own
soulful sound blending blues, R&B, hip-
hop and reggae. After two decades as
the driving creative force behind The
Melody Makers, a triple Grammy-winning
act which included brother Stephen and
sisters Sharon and Cedella, Ziggy re-
leased his debut solo album in 2003,
Dragonfly (RCA Victor Group), which fea-
tured such guest artists as Flea and John
Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mike
Einziger and DJ Kilmore (Incubus).
He has contributed to a variety of
soundtracks including 50 First Dates
and Shark's Tale, in which he delved
into acting for the first time, playing
the character of Bernie, the Jamaican
jellyfish. In addition to his skills as a
singer, songwriter and producer, Ziggy
founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Re-
sources Giving Enlightenment), a non-
profit organization that benefits a
wide range of charitable children's
causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and other
developing nations. More recently, he
has thrown his support behind the
Youth AIDS campaign.

(BPT) - If you’ve ever gotten up in
the morning and dreaded the idea
of going out in the cold or sitting in
rush hour traffic, you’ve probably
dreamed of working from home.
And years ago, that was all it was, a
dream.
Times have changed, and for many
workers, the dream of working
from home is increasingly becoming
a reality. Modern technology has
made it easier than ever to connect
to companies and coworkers re-
motely and employers across the
nation are recognizing the financial
benefits of allowing their employ-
ees to work from home.
* Answer the phone. Not answering
your phone while teleworking makes
you look bad because coworkers will
speculate you’re not being productive.
OfficeSuite offers mobile twinning that
will ring two phones simultaneously so
you never miss a call.
* Keep your surroundings to yourself.
Good natured grumbling will only re-
main good natured for so long if you
constantly remind your coworkers
you’re working from the deck or next to
the pool. Being cozy has its benefits
over cube life but that doesn’t mean
those stuck in the office want to hear
about it, especially if they had to go out
in the cold or sit in rush hour traffic.
To learn more about how OfficeSuite
can help you achieve your maximum
Five tips to make the
benefits of working
from home work for
you
The work-from-home movement
has gained so much steam, there
is now a Telework Week, which
will be held this year from March
3 to 7 to encourage companies to
give it a try. However, many busi-
nesses remain concerned that if
employees work from home,
productivity may suffer. To help
businesses and employees ensure
that time spent working from
home does not hamper productiv-
ity, follow these five tips.
* Ensure you have the right tools to do
the job. Encourage your business’s
leaders to use modern technology to
the fullest through a communications
system that seamlessly integrates the
office with employees’ homes. Office-
Suite by Broadview Networks makes
working from home easier than ever
by essentially turning any phone into a
“work phone.” Ring groups provide the
functionality of two lines for the price
of one and the digital receptionist can
be used to answer calls and route
them to voice mail, a mobile phone or
any other phone in the world, depend-
ing on your preferences.
* Set projects aside for teleworking.
Some projects cater more easily to
telework than others. As you plan out
your work week, deadlines obviously
take center stage, but after that, look
at your projects and determine which
ones can be done at home. Identifying
those projects and capitalizing on the
opportunity will make your telework
time more productive.
* Keep your team on the same
page. By using cloud-based document
storage solutions like Google Drive,
collaboration among team members
in different locations becomes much
easier. A solution that manages work-
flow and tracks edits and feedback
within documents lets team members
see the status of a project in real time.
