Congratulations to the girls 7th grade volleyball team
for a terrific season!
The girls came in second in the District Tournament
on Saturday, October 24th.
I am so proud of you this season!
GREAT JOB!!!
Coach D. Smith
The 8th grade girls volleyball team placed third in the
district tournament held Saturday October 24, 2015. The
ladies started off playing against Grissom winning the first
game 25-6. Savon Dodson and Kaitlyn Bacon gave us
an incredible lead with their awesome serving streaks.
Gillian Sears and Stephanie Tallerico were unbeatable
with their defensive plays. The second game was taken
by Grissom 7-25. The girls came back in the third game
fighting strong with great plays from Sarah Taffs, Jasmine
Asberry, Valerie DiBatista and Olivia Joliffe but Grissom
took the game in a close 21-25. Carter then took on the
Beer Barons. We took the first game 25-3 with Olivia
Skierski serving 17 powerful serves in a row that could
not be returned. Beer took the second game while Carter
dealt with a couple of injuries. But the third game was
taken by Carter 25-16 with some incredible plays from
Jasmine Asberry, Gillian Sears, Alyssa Kessler, Alexis
Nawrocki and Stephanie Tallerico. Olivia Joliffe played
amazing during the entire match killing every ball that
came her way. Carter Cougars ended up taking third
place overall in the tournament, and finished second in
the district during the regular season. For the regular
season our record was 5-3.
It was a fun season ladies, good luck to all of you in high
school!

Notes from Nursing
I got mine, did you get yours?? The Flu season has begun but it’s not too late to
get immunized against the seasonal flu.
Who should get vaccinated this season? Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should
get a flu vaccine this season. It is especially
important for some people to get vaccinated.
Those include:
*People who are at high risk of developing
serious complications like pneumonia if
they get sick with the flu:
*People with asthma, diabetes, and chronic
lung disease
*Pregnant women
*People 65 years and older
*People who live with or care for others who
are at high risk of developing serious
complications.
When should you get vaccinated? October
or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but
you can still get vaccinated in December and later.
Getting the vaccine early gives the body enough
time to build up immunity to or protection from,
the flu virus before infection rates start to climb in
the cold months. It takes about two weeks after
vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body
and provide protection against the flu. A flu
vaccine is needed every year because flu viruses
are constantly changing. It is not unusual for new
flu viruses to appear each year.
What are the symptoms of the flu? Symptoms
of seasonal flu include fever plus one or more of the
following: cough, sore throat, body aches,
headaches, chills, fatigue, diarrhea, or vomiting.
The virus can also cause pneumonia, which can make it
hard to breathe.
Is there a treatment if I get sick with the flu? Antiviral medications used to treat common seasonal
flu can ease symptoms and shorten the duration of the
illness.
When to keep kids home… When to Keep a Child
Home from School: 1. Fever: A child has a temperature of 100 F taken by
mouth or 99 F taken under the arm. The child should
not return until 24 hours of no fever, without the use
of fever-reducing medications.
2. Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools,
even if there are no other signs of illness. The child
should have no loose stools for 24 hours prior to
returning to school.
3. Vomiting: A child that is vomiting. The child should
have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours prior to
returning to school.
Prevention: Teach and practice healthy habits. Wash
your hands often with soap and warm water for at least
20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth,
because the virus can spread when you touch surfaces
that are infested with germs.

Ms. McLean
Michigan Teacher of the Year nominee, Mr. Chase Mielke, visited Carter to speak with our students. In the morning, he spoke with each grade level about how each of us has the ability to control our thoughts, like whether we're optimists or pessimists. He also discussed perspective; the idea that it's good to remember that whatever we've been dealt in life, someone has it worse.
In the afternoon, Chase met in smaller groups with a few select classes. Here he talked to them about how the brain works, and how they can use that knowledge to help them in school. In short, you use it or you lose it. He explained to students that if they don't do well on a test it's not because they can't, it's because they didn't take all the necessary steps your brain needs to help remember the content (see it, hear it, write it down, etc.).
It was a very positive presentation, and one we hope the students found to be very inspirational.

CARTER’S COUNSELOR CORNER
HOMEWORK AND STUDY SHORTCUTS:
12 WAYS TO GET THINGS DONE QUICKER
By Susan Kruger, M.ED.
Small steps can bring huge rewards in getting homework done and in studying for tests.
This information was intended for students with ADHD, however, the strategies can benefit
any student.
YOU CAN GET IT DONE
Talk with a parent about raising her ADHD child and, sooner or later, the conversation will
turn to the homework wars. “You can’t believe how long it takes for my son to finish home-
work,” she will say. “Will it ever get better?” Yes, it will. There are ADD-friendly strategies
for finishing homework and studying more effectively. Don’t tell your child which strategy to
use. Instead, let her choose. Choice is a key factor for inspiring motivation.
TAKE TEN
When you first sit down to do homework, take two minutes to put loose papers into the proper
folders. Use the next eight minutes to reread notes and/or handouts from school. These 10
minutes will save you hours of searching and studying. You will quickly get into the habit of
putting assignments where they belong. Reviewing your notes helps transfer information to
long-term memory, saving hours of study time when test time comes around.
WORK IN 30 MINUTE BLOCKS
Set a timer and limit each study or work session to 30 minutes. Challenge yourself to finish a
certain amount of work within that time. The adrenaline rush of the challenge will improve
your focus.
TAKE 5 MINUTE BREAKS
Both your body and brain need frequent refreshers. Set another timer for five minutes, then
do jumping jacks, run in place, or stretch. Start another 30 minute block of homework. This
sounds too simple to work, but these breaks keep you sharp to get your work done faster.
After two weeks, you will find that these five minute blocks will significantly reduce
procrastination.
CREATE A USER-FRIENDLY PLANNER
A lot of ADHD students who keep a planner forget to use it throughout the day. Always keep
it in your main folder or binder, along with a pen in the binding. Use a binder clip to mark your
current page. It should take only a few steps to access your planner and to write down assign-
ments and reminders-and you won’t waste time later, calling friends to ask about homework.
Page 11 Carter Middle School ~ Warren Consolidated Schools
SIP SOMETHING SWEET
When kids do homework, they should sip (not gulp) a drink with sugar in it, says Dr. Russell
Barkley, Ph.D., author of Taking Charge of ADHD. Lemonade or sports drinks are good
choices. These beverages deliver glucose to your brain, which is its only source of fuel. The
more fuel you have, the more you will be able to work effectively and efficiently.
SKIP PROBLEMS THAT STUMP YOU
If you come to a homework question (or two or three) that you find confusing, highlight or
circle it and move on. The more you dwell on something you don’t understand, the more
anxious you will get. The more anxious you get, the less energy you have for the rest of your
homework. Stick with what you can figure out. Take the hard problems to your teacher at
the start of class and ask for help.
REVIEW YOUR NOTES OUT LOUD
Your brain will process the information in three ways: through your eyes as you read it, your
mouth as you say it, and your ears as you hear your own voice. This improves your focus and
memory.
CREATE TEST QUESTIONS FROM YOUR NOTES
Writing down questions helps you learn better than reciting or memorizing information.
The process forces you to think about the information at a higher level. Higher-level thinking
helps you learn more things, thus shortening your study time.
READ YOUR TEXTBOOK: JUST NOT EVERY WORD
Read through related sections of your textbook, but don’t read every word. Read headings,
diagrams, and captions to photos and illustrations to get started. Set your timer and spend
one 30-minute block reviewing a textbook chapter. Your enhanced comprehension will help you
sail through your homework.
DO A QUICK REVIEW BEFORE CLASS
Review textbook chapters before teachers lecture about them in class. This process gives
your brain enough knowledge to help you pay better attention in class. You can reduce study
and homework time if you have a deeper understanding of the material.
GET READY FOR SCHOOL AT NIGHT
Most ADDers are groggy in the morning, so it’s easy to forget things if you are trying to get
organized. Instead, gather all of your folders, books, notebooks, and supplies, and put them in
your bag before you go to sleep. When you don’t deal with chaos in the morning, you have
more resources to stay focused through the day. The calmer your day, the more energy you’ll
have to blast through homework in the evening.
Colonial
Re-enactment
Carter Middle School's 8th grade U.S. History students saw a presentation from Colonial
reenactors representing Paul Revere and Sybil Ludington, the lesser known female Paul
Revere, who was just 16 years old, yet rode twice the distance of Paul Revere, alerting the
Colonial forces that the British were approaching.
Everyone enjoyed the interesting presentation which included historical information,
artifacts, and a question and answer session.
Dear parents/guardians-
To celebrate Mexican culture, all Spanish students will be learning about the Mexican holiday, The Day of the
Dead, or “Día de los Muertos”. During the end of October and beginning of November, the students are going to
be learning about the significance of this holiday in Mexico and how it is celebrated. In addition to readings,
class discussions, and pictures, we would like to give the students the opportunity to make cookie skulls that can
be decorated in honor of this holiday. We will be decorating cookies in class on Monday, November 2. In order
to offset the cost of this activity we are asking for donations of the following items. Anything donated will be
greatly appreciated.
Items Needed:
Containers of vanilla frosting
food coloring (all colors) to tint the frosting
Please send in any donations with your child by Wednesday, October 28, 2015.
Thank you so much for your support!
