SINCE THE EARLY 18TH CENTURY, Carysfort has enjoyed an air of calm and tranquilliry.

In 1746, Lord Proby built Grey House at Carysfort to escape the demands of the burgeoning Capital.

He insisted on creating a country-style retreat, complete with feature gardens, walled orchards an

ornamental lake and tree-lined walkways.

The Sisters of Mercy, who acquired the properry in 1891, further enhanced Carysfort's reputation as a

place of meditative calm - and also established its reputation as a centre oflearning.

Today, the reputation of calm and the tradition of learning flourish. The Michael Smurfit Graduate

chool of Business and several U.C.D. faculties are housed at Carysfort.

And under Castlethorri's careful management, Carysforr's unique atmosphere of country calm has

l ccn dutifully protected and preserved.

THE GARDENS AT CARYSFORT

THE GARDENS ARE TYPICAL OF THE EDWARDIAN PERIOD, with conifers and evergreen shrubs planted in an informallayout beneath existing large beech and oak.

Proby's Lake is surrounded on the right (as you approach from the entrance to Castlethorn at Carysfort) by Irish yew and springflowering Japanese cherries and on the other by a line of Scots pine with their distinctive orange bark. Between the lake and the greyhouse are an interesting collection of shrubs used in present day gardens, such as red berried conroneasters, yellow flowered mahonia, and blue flowered ceanorhus. Evergreen trees such as the blue Arias cedar and golden Leyland cypress, planted a few years ago, will intime replace the more mature trees.

Walking past the lake, on the left, brings you to cypress trees - guardians to the entrance of the formal garden, with its concentriccircles of clipped box hedges. Large pyramidal red berried hollies and Irish yew enclose this area from other parrs of the garden.

The Irish yew originated in Co. Fermanagh. From a single tree plants were propagated and the Irish yew has since found its way intogardens and parks in temperate regions throughout the world.

Another tree native to Ireland, the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus), is also found in the garden. The white bell shaped flowers and roundstrawberry like fruits are borne in Autumn.

The Coastal redwood, native to California, is the world's tallest tree. It grows up to 112 metres tall and has an estimated life span ofbetween 700 and 1,000 years. The specimen in this garden is a healthy infant with a long future. The Californian connection

continues with Monreray pine, a three needled pine with cones righrly fixed ro the branches, and Monreray cypress, with lemonscented foliage and lumpy cones which in Aurumn lie scarrered on rhe ground.

Nearby a Chusan palm, a native of China with large fan like leaves, srands sentinel over rhe scene .•

There are several evergreen shrubs in rhe area of rhe box parrerre, Porruguese and Cherry laurel and the Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis).

In rhe area adjoining the old walled garden are norable specimens of Turkey oak, fern leaved beech and weeping beech. Beyond rh is isrhe park walk.

The boundary planring of rhe original garden has some norable rrees such as the holm, or evergreen, oak, a very fine example of rheNew Zealand daisy bush, (Olearia paniculata) and a golden yew.

This is a place of beaury and rranquiliry, with the sound of running water, wind in the rrees, shadows cas re by the winter sun; an oasisfilled with rrees and shrubs from many lands.
