I am delighted to welcome you to the Casa Serena Open, the fi rst European Seniors Tour event to be played here in the Czech Republic. Casa Serena Golf and Chateau Roztez are the result of a casual conversation between my wife, Maureen, and my Chairman, Terry Gou. Our thanks go to Maureen for bringing this concept to reality seven years later and for creating a unique meeting place for executives to relax and play golf in such a convivial atmosphere.

This prestigious event on the European Seniors Tour, known as ‘the Friendly Tour,’ is a perfect match for her concept, where the Senior golfers can exchange experiences with business executives – the ideal meeting of two highly competitive professional worlds. Před CASA SERENA OPEN

Bernhard Langer, legenda Ryder Cupu a European Tour, je v tomto týdnu jedním z hvězdných lákadel Casa Serena Open. Populární Němec, který vyhrál Chemapol

Trophy Czech Open, poslední turnaj European Tour pořádaný v České republice roku 1997, se těší na návrat, který prověří jeho schopnosti spolu s špičkou European Seniors Tour.

„Od české veřejnosti jsem v roce 1997 zažil velmi pěkné přivítání – jsou to velmi přátelští lidé,“ říká Langer. „Byli moc ochotní a pohostinní. Návštěva se mi líbila. Hrál jsem skvělý golf a měl jsem radost z vítězství na Czech Open, kterým jsem přidal další velký titul do své sbírky. Věřím, že to bude velmi úspěšné Casa Serena Open, první z mnoha turnajů, které se uskuteční v České republice.“

Milan Veselý, prezident České golfové federace, vyjádřil své potěšení z toho, že se země hostí profesionální soutěžní golf. „Mám opravdovou radost, že České golfová federace může být součástí historicky prvního turnaje European Seniors Tour pořádaného na české půdě.“

„Je to jedenáct let od doby, kdy se naposledy hrál tak významný profesionální golfový turnaj v České republice a shodou okolností to byl právě Bernhard Langer, kdo tehdy vyhrál na hřišti na Karlštejně. Jsem rád, že si sem European Seniors Tour našla cestu a jsem si jist, že to bude začátek nové éry profesionálních golfových turnajů v České republice.“

PŘÍHODNÝ ODKAZMužem, který viděl výsledky tvrdé práce, je

Terry Gou, předseda fi rmy Foxconn, jednoho ze sponzorů. Gou požádal Maureen Chang, zakladatelku Casa Serena Golf o renovaci historického zámku Roztěž z 16. století a o vybudování osmnáctijamkového golfového hřiště. Zamýšlel to jako dar pro svou ženu Serenu, která však zemřela na rakovinu v roce 2005. Serena nikdy nespatřila zámek v nové podobě, ale Gou věří, že turnaj a jeho hráči znamenají příhodné naplnění tohoto odkazu.

„Jsem poprvé takto spojen s European Seniors Tour a jsem velmi potěšen, že mám příležitost prezentovat nádherné hřiště Casa Serena Golf s tolika skvělými hráči na tak prestižní události,“ řekl Gou. „Těším se, že budu moci přivítat kohokoli ze všech částí světa právě v České republice.“

Jedním z největších jmen a v Evropě nejoslavovanějších golfi stů hrajících tento týden je Ian Woosnam, kapitán Ryder Cupu 2006 a vítěz Masters 1991. Po letošním vstupu na European Seniors Tour už Welšan dvakrát zažil vítězství, na Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship a Russian Seniors Open, a tento týden bude usilovat o třetí titul.

„Nemohu se turnaje dočkat,“ říká Woosnam. „Letos jsem vyhrál ve východní Evropě dvakrát a na Casa Serena Open se budu snažit zkompletovat sbírku.“

Sam Torrance je dalším bývalým kapitánem Evropy v Ryder Cupu, který bude ve hře o vítězství na premiérovém Casa Serena Open. Skotský vítěz žebříčku Order of Merit v rámci European Seniors Tour 2005 a 2006 nedávno ukázal záblesky své nejlepší formy, mimo jiné při zahrání 64 ran na Russian Seniors Open, a těší se na návrat do České republiky.

„Své návštěvy při European Tour jsem si v České republice velmi užil a moc se těším, že si tam opět zahraji,“ řekl Torrance.

Vedle jmen Langer, Woosnam a Torrance je tu Carl Mason. Trojnásobný vítěz Order of Merit, žebříčku European Seniors Tour, vyhrál dvacet seniorských titulů a také získal nejvíc na prize money v historii toru. Mason loni vyhrál pět turnajů a svůj letošní první titul získal minulý měsíc na Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.

„Na Casa Serena Open mířím po vítězství ve Švýcarsku v dobré formě. Mých 61 ran v sobotním kole mi dává hodně sebevědomí,“ řekl Mason.

OMRÁČENI KRÁSOUDalším Angličanem, který doufá, že tento

týden zanechá stopu na české půdě, je nováček Peter Mitchell. Letošní padesátník debutoval na

PŘÍHODNÝ ODKAZMužem, který viděl výsledky tvrdé práce, je

Terry Gou, předseda fi rmy Foxconn, jednoho ze sponzorů. Gou požádal Maureen Chang, zakladatelku Casa Serena Golf o renovaci historického zámku Roztěž z 16. století a o vybudování osmnáctijamkového golfového hřiště. Zamýšlel to jako dar pro svou ženu Serenu, která však zemřela na rakovinu v roce 2005. Serena nikdy nespatřila zámek v nové podobě, ale Gou věří, že turnaj a jeho hráči znamenají příhodné naplnění tohoto odkazu.

„Jsem poprvé takto spojen s European Seniors Tour a jsem velmi potěšen, že mám příležitost prezentovat nádherné hřiště Casa Serena Golf s tolika skvělými hráči na tak prestižní události,“ řekl Gou. „Těším se, že budu moci přivítat kohokoli ze všech částí světa právě v České republice.“

Jedním z největších jmen a v Evropě nejoslavovanějších golfi stů hrajících tento týden je Ian Woosnam, kapitán Ryder Cupu 2006 a vítěz Masters 1991. Po letošním vstupu na European Seniors Tour už Welšan dvakrát zažil vítězství, na Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship a Russian Seniors Open, a tento týden bude usilovat o třetí titul.

Sam Torrance je dalším bývalým kapitánem Evropy v Ryder Cupu, který bude ve hře o vítězství na premiérovém Casa Serena Open. Skotský vítěz žebříčku Order of Merit v rámci European Seniors Tour 2005 a 2006 nedávno ukázal záblesky své nejlepší formy, mimo jiné při zahrání 64 ran na Russian Seniors Open, a těší se na návrat do České republiky.

„Své návštěvy při European Tour jsem si v České republice velmi užil a moc se těším, že si tam opět zahraji,“ řekl Torrance.

Vedle jmen Langer, Woosnam a Torrance je tu Carl Mason. Trojnásobný vítěz Order of Merit, žebříčku European Seniors Tour, vyhrál dvacet seniorských titulů a také získal nejvíc na prize money v historii toru. Mason loni vyhrál pět turnajů a svůj letošní první titul získal minulý měsíc na Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.

RYDER Cup and European Tour legend Bernhard Langer is the star attraction at this week’s inaugural Casa Serena Open on the European Seniors tour.

The German, who won the Chemapol Trophy Czech Open, the last European Tour event held in the Czech Republic in 1997, is looking forward to returning to the country this week and testing his skills against the cream of European Seniors golf.

“It was a very nice welcome by the Czech people in 1997, they are very friendly people,” said Langer. “They offered a great hospitality. I enjoyed my visit to Prague, I played some superb golf and was very happy to win the Czech Open and add another great tournament to my collection. I hope it will be a very successful Casa Serena Open this week, the fi rst of many tournaments to come in the Czech Republic.”

Milan Vesely, President of the Czech Golf Federation, spoke of his delight at the prospect of hosting professional, competitive golf in this country. “I am truly pleased that the Czech Golf Federation can be part of the historical fi rst European Seniors Tour event held on Czech soil.

FITTING LEGACYOne man who has seen a lot of hard work

come to fruition is Terry Gou, Chairman of the co-sponsors, Foxconn. Gou asked the founder of Casa Serena Golf, Maureen Chang, to renovate the historic 16th Century Chateau and an 18 hole golf course as a gift for his late wife Serena who died of cancer in 2005. Serena never got to see the completed Chateau, but Gou believes this tournament and the assembled fi eld should provide a fi tting legacy.

“This is my fi rst involvement with the European Seniors Tour and I am very pleased to have this opportunity to present the beautiful Casa Serena Golf course with so many great players participating in this prestigious event,” said Gou. “I look forward to welcoming everyone from different parts of the world to the Czech Republic.”

One of the biggest names teeing it up this

week is 2006 Ryder Cup Captain and 1991 Masters Champion Ian Woosnam, one of Europe’s most celebrated players. Having made the step up the European Seniors Tour this year the Welshman has already tasted success twice at the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship and the Russian Seniors Open and he is gunning for a third victory here this week.

“I can’t wait to tee it up in Kutna Hora this week,” said Woosnam. “I’ve won twice in Eastern Europe this year and I’ll be looking to complete the set here at the Casa Serena Open.”

The 50-year-old made his debut on the European Seniors Tour at the Jersey Seniors Classic, fi nishing tied 11th, before winning his fi rst title at the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open. Mitchell fi red a fi nal round 71 to win from Ian Woosnam - the local favourite - by two strokes.

“Winning in Wales meant a lot to me, I haven’t played competitively since 2002 and as it was only my second event I was thrilled,” said Mitchell, who is excited about the prospect of teeing it up at the Casa Serena Open this week. “When I competed in the Chemapol Trophy Czech Open on The European Tour in 1997 I was stunned by the beauty of the place. I’m looking forward to returning to the Czech Republic this week to see

the changes that might have occurred since I was last here.”

Likeable Spaniard Juan Quiros has won three times on the European Seniors Tour and is looking for his fi rst double-haul of victories in a season when he tees it up in Kutna Hora this week. He claimed the Irish Seniors Open in June and looks set to fi nish in the top ten on the Order of Merit for the third successive season.

Quiros landed the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in his rookie season of 2006 and followed it a year later with victory at the Open de France Senior de Divonne. He’s playing well this year and recently fi nished tied third at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.

“I’ve had a lot fun on the European Seniors Tour this season and winning in Ireland was a superb thrill for me,” said Quiros. “I’m hopeful I can put in a good performance this week at the Casa Serena Open. The Czech Republic is a beautiful place and the people are like the Spanish - very welcoming and kind!”

BERNHARD Langer miluje každou minutu své nové kariéry na seniorském okruhu. Brzy po vstupu na US Champions Tour vyhrál koncem minulé sezony první turnaj,

Letošní rok zahájil vítězstvími na Toshiba Classic a Ginn Championship Hammock Beach Resort, což ho ve Spojených státech vysadilo do čela money listu i žebříčku Charles Schwab Cup. Langerovi není úspěch cizí. Patřil do Velké pětky, která v 80. a 90. letech dominovala evropskému golfu, tak jako Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Seve Ballesteros a Sandy Lyle. Během své kariéry trvající 34 let získal kolem sedmdesáti turnajových vítězství po celém světě.

Bývalý světový hráč číslo jedna vyhrál Order of Merit na European Tour v letech 1981 a 1984 a dostal se na vrchol svého golfového umění, když získal tituly na turnajích Masters 1985 a 1993. Langer byl také jedním z největších jmen Ryder Cupu, v němž jako hráč startoval za Evropu desetkrát, z toho šestkrát vítězně. Každý profesionální golfi sta touží vyhrát majory a vyhrát Masters pro mě znamená, že jsem tam do konce života zván k účasti. Pokud ne, je to velké zklamání pro hráče i fanoušky. Evropané mají docela mladý, ale přitom zkušený tým. To jim pomůže v mnoha dalších letech.

?: Letos jste na Players Championship vstupoval do fi nálového kola jako čtvrtý, což ukazuje, že hrajete pořád skvěle. Čemu připisujete váš pokračující úspěch?!: Snažím se nezaostávat a vylepšovat svou techniku. Pořád pracuji se svým koučem Willi Hofmannem, snažím se zůstat zdravý, pružný a pravidelně cvičit, třikrát až čtyřikrát týdně. Pokud toho budu schopen a budou mě bavit turnaje, tréninky a příprava včetně té fyzické, jsem si jist, že to vše povede k úspěchu na golfovém hřišti. BERNHARD Langer miluje každou minutu své nové kariéry na seniorském okruhu. Brzy po vstupu na US Champions Tour vyhrál koncem minulé sezony první turnaj,

Administaff Small Business Classic. Letošní rok zahájil vítězstvími na Toshiba Classic a Ginn Championship Hammock Beach Resort, což ho ve Spojených státech vysadilo do čela money listu i žebříčku Charles Schwab Cup. Langerovi není úspěch cizí. Patřil do Velké pětky, která v 80. a 90. letech dominovala evropskému golfu, tak jako Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Seve Ballesteros a Sandy Lyle. Během své kariéry trvající 34 let získal kolem sedmdesáti turnajových vítězství po celém světě.

Bývalý světový hráč číslo jedna vyhrál Order of Merit na European Tour v letech 1981 a 1984 a dostal se na vrchol svého golfového umění, když získal tituly na turnajích Masters 1985 a 1993. Langer byl také jedním z největších jmen Ryder Cupu, v němž jako hráč startoval za Evropu desetkrát, z toho šestkrát vítězně. BERNHARD Langer is loving every minute of his new career on the Senior circuit. Having picked up his fi rst title at the Administaff Small Business Classic soon after joining

the U.S. Champions Tour towards the end of last season, the German legend has kicked on this year with victories at the Toshiba Classic and the Ginn Championship Hammock Beach Resort that have taken him to the top of both the money list and the Charles Schwab Cup rankings in the States.

No stranger to success, Langer was part of The Big Five who dominated European golf in the 1980s and 1990s along with Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Seve Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle and has racked up some 70 tournament victories worldwide in a glorious career spanning 34 years.

The former World No.1 topped the Order of Merit on The European Tour in 1981 and 1984 and reached the pinnacle of the game when he claimed the Masters Tournament in 1985 and then repeated the feat in 1993. Langer also carved a reputation as one of the greatest Ryder Cup competitors ever with a remarkable ten appearances as a player that saw Europe claim the Cup six times. He then matched his playing achievements when he captained the European team to a record 18½ - 9½ victory on American soil at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2004.

Langer will be glowing with pride this week when the inaugural Casa Serena Open, which is being run by his company Langer Sport Marketing, gets underway and nothing would give him greater pleasure than to walk away as the event’s fi rst champion.

Q: You were a prominent part of the golden era of European Golf in the 80s and 90s along with Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam. How does it feel to be competing with them again as Seniors?A: It’s just great. We had been playing against each other for almost 30 years and we played together in several Ryder Cup Teams. It’s fun still being out there and competing against each other.Q: You’ve found instant success on the U.S.

Champions Tour. How does life on the U.S. Champions Tour compare with competing on the PGA Tour and The European Tour? A: Life on the U.S. Champions Tour is still very similar to The European Tour and still very competitive. The only difference is I am one of the youngest and not one of the oldest players. We play slightly shorter courses. In a regular U.S. Champions Tour event there is no cut and only three competitive rounds. The advantage of that is that you can plan your life and your travel schedule a little bit better, being able to often return home from the tournament on Sunday night and not having to leave to travel to the event until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. That’s a nice change.

Q: What do you expect from the Casa Serena Open and your participation particularly?A: I hope it will be a very successful Casa Serena Open, the fi rst of many tournaments to come in the Czech Republic and that we will help to make golf more popular in this country. Also that people can get a feel for how great a sport this is. I hope that the sponsors and everybody else will be satisfi ed and thrilled with the championship. I look forward to seeing some of my old friends from The European Tour and I hope to play well.

Q: Your father has Czech roots. Is it a sentimental journey to come back to the Czech Republic? A: Yes, it is. My father was born and raised near Sumperk. Obviously without my father I wouldn’t be here. I have a couple of good friends from the Czech Republic, too. It is close to Germany and I’ve always enjoyed my visits here.

Q: You won the Czech Open at Karlstejn in 1997 and many people recall your fi nal round there with 63 strokes as near-perfect golf and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. What about you?A: Yes, the 63 on Sunday was one of my best rounds in my career and almost fl awless. It was pretty neat and very memorable. There are not many times when you play 18 holes where you don’t make mistakes and that was one of those days I will never forget.

Q: Describe the thrill of winning your two Masters titles – what kind of impact did they have on your career?A: Winning my two Masters was obviously the highlight of my career, next to The Ryder Cup. Every professional golfer wants to win Majors and to have won the Masters means I’m invited back for the rest of my life. To be introduced on the fi rst tee as U.S. Masters Champion and to be in a kind of elite group of people who have achieved that is something that will always stay with me and something I will always be known for. I became known around the world once I won a Major and people recognised me much more than before.

Q: You’ve been a fi ve-times winner of the The Ryder Cup and Captain in 04 at Oakland Hills. How do you explain the supremacy of the European Team over the USA in recent years?A: It is diffi cult to explain. I think the players on the European Team are a little bit closer to each other. They seem to have more fun during the event and they enjoy the experience more than the Americans. There is a lot of pressure on the U.S. Team because they are expected to win. When they don’t, it’s a big disappointment to them and their countrymen. The Europeans have a fairly young yet experienced team. This will help them for a number of years to come.

Q: Your performance at The Players Championship this year, where you were in fourth place going into the fi nal round shows you are playing as well as ever. What do you put your continued success down to?A: I just try to continue and improve my technique. I still work with my coach, Willi Hofmann and I try to stay healthy and supple and work out on a regular basis, probably three to four times a week. If I can do all that and still enjoy competing, practising and working on my game and fi tness, I am sure all that should amount to achieving success on the golf course. I think I also have my priorities right in life, which helps me focus on golf when I need to – but I am not consumed by it. ■

Během působení na European Tour získal Costantino Rocca pět titulů a hrál třikrát Ryder Cup, kde při svém posledním startu porazil v singlu nastupující americkou

hvězdu Tigera Woodse.Loni nastoupil rodák z italského Bergama

na European Seniors Tour, jako by tam byl odjakživa. Při svém třetím startu vyhrál AIB Irish Seniors Open, získal titul na závěrečném turnaji Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy-Seniors Tour Championship, skončil druhý v Order of Merit a dostal cenu Hardys Wine Rookie of the Year pro nejlepšího nováčka.

To nebyl špatný začátek na muže, který pracoval v továrně na polystyren a tím si fi nancoval golf jako své hobby.

„Lidé tvrdí, že jsem docela zvláštní druh chlapíka. Ale slavný? To ne,” říká Rocca. Přestože je nejúspěšnějším golfi stou Itálie všech dob a nejlepším italským golfovým exportem, Rocca pořád vidí ve své zemi potenciál k tomu, aby se zrodil ještě lepší hráč, než jakým je on. A chce být u toho.

„Itálie nemá velkou golfovou kulturu. Hrát golf je příliš drahé. Existuje jen málo hřišť a ta jsou soukromá. To znamená, že o víkendech jsou většinou rezervována pro turnaje,” vysvětluje.

„Italská asociace mě požádala, abych navrhl první veřejné golfové hřiště u Říma, Je to výzva, kterou velmi rád přijímám. Čím vice dětí začne hrát, tím větší šance, že jednoho dne bude někdo lepší než já.”

„Golf je dobrá příprava na život. V průběhu let jsem se o sobě hodně naučil – a učím se pořád,” pokračuje Rocca. „Opravdový charakter hráče se ukáže na hřišti. Zkušenost, respekt, vůle – to vše vyjde najevo.”

Rocca zažil skutečně mnohé lekce. Proslul nepovedeným chipem a vzápětí zázračným dvacetimetrovým puttem na 72. jamce Open Championship 1995 v St. Andrews, kde si vynutil play off s Johnem Dalym. Američan ho na následujících čtyřech dodatečných jamkách porazil, ale Roccovo místo v historii coby

kultovního hrdiny bylo zajištěno. Rocca se znovu dostal do titulků o dva roky později při Ryder Cupu ve Valderramě, kde v nedělních singlech porazil Tigera Woodse, nově korunovaného šampiona Masters. Přesto to nepovažuje za vrchol své kariéry. „Ve své kariéře nemám nic než krásné vzpomínky,” usmívá se.

Oblíbený Ital nedávno začal novou kapitolu svého života, kterou už přidal ke svým vzpomínkám. Debut na European Seniors Tour prožil na domácí půdě při Sharp Italian Seniors Open, kde skončil na děleném 24. místě a pak při svém třetím startu mezi seniory odjel z AIB Irish Seniors Open s trofejí.

„Měl jsem velkou radost, že se mi podařilo vyhrát tak brzy. Samozřejmě uplynulo mnoho času od mého posledního vítězství na tour,” říká Rocca, který se k vítězství propracoval s koly za 69, 71 a 71 ran a o dva údery nechal za sebou dvojici Juan Quiros, Kevin Spurgeon.

PŘÍLEŽITOSTINa otázku, kdo ho inspiroval k tomu, aby

„Myslím, že mnoho mladých hráčů by potřebovalo zkušenost ze zaměstnání. Pracoval jsem v továrně deset let a můžu vám říct, že to byla dobrá zkušenost,“ tvrdí Rocca. „Díky tomu si mnohem víc vážíte toho, co máte.“

Tento týden bude Rocca v České republice usilovat při dobré formě o solidní výsledek, který by mu pomohl vzhůru v Order of Merit. ■

Během působení na European Tour získal Costantino Rocca pět titulů a hrál třikrát Ryder Cup, kde při svém posledním startu porazil v singlu nastupující americkou

hvězdu Tigera Woodse.Loni nastoupil rodák z italského Bergama

na European Seniors Tour, jako by tam byl odjakživa. Při svém třetím startu vyhrál AIB Irish Seniors Open, získal titul na závěrečném turnaji Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy-Seniors Tour Championship, skončil druhý v Order of Merit a dostal cenu Hardys Wine Rookie of the Year pro nejlepšího nováčka.

To nebyl špatný začátek na muže, který pracoval v továrně na polystyren a tím si fi nancoval golf jako své hobby.

„Lidé tvrdí, že jsem docela zvláštní druh chlapíka. Ale slavný? To ne,” říká Rocca. Přestože je nejúspěšnějším golfi stou Itálie všech dob a nejlepším italským golfovým exportem, Rocca pořád vidí ve své zemi potenciál k tomu, aby se zrodil ještě lepší hráč, než jakým je on. A chce být u toho.

„Itálie nemá velkou golfovou kulturu. Hrát golf je příliš drahé. Existuje jen málo hřišť a ta jsou soukromá. To znamená, že o víkendech jsou většinou rezervována pro turnaje,” vysvětluje.

„Italská asociace mě požádala, abych navrhl první veřejné golfové hřiště u Říma, Je to výzva, kterou velmi rád přijímám. Čím vice dětí začne hrát, tím větší šance, že jednoho dne bude někdo lepší než já.”

„Golf je dobrá příprava na život. V průběhu let jsem se o sobě hodně naučil – a učím se pořád,” pokračuje Rocca. „Opravdový charakter hráče se ukáže na hřišti. Zkušenost, respekt, vůle – to vše vyjde najevo.”

Rocca zažil skutečně mnohé lekce. Proslul nepovedeným chipem a vzápětí zázračným dvacetimetrovým puttem na 72. jamce Open Championship 1995 v St. Andrews, kde si vynutil play off s Johnem Dalym. Američan ho na následujících čtyřech dodatečných jamkách porazil, ale Roccovo místo v historii coby

kultovního hrdiny bylo zajištěno. Rocca se znovu dostal do titulků o dva roky později při Ryder Cupu ve Valderramě, kde v nedělních singlech porazil Tigera Woodse, nově korunovaného šampiona Masters. Přesto to nepovažuje za vrchol své kariéry. „Ve své kariéře nemám nic než krásné vzpomínky,” usmívá se.

Oblíbený Ital nedávno začal novou kapitolu svého života, kterou už přidal ke svým vzpomínkám. Debut na European Seniors Tour prožil na domácí půdě při Sharp Italian Seniors Open, kde skončil na děleném 24. místě a pak při svém třetím startu mezi seniory odjel z AIB Irish Seniors Open s trofejí.

„Měl jsem velkou radost, že se mi podařilo vyhrát tak brzy. Samozřejmě uplynulo mnoho času od mého posledního vítězství na tour,” říká Rocca, který se k vítězství propracoval s koly za 69, 71 a 71 ran a o dva údery nechal za sebou dvojici Juan Quiros, Kevin Spurgeon.

Last year, the Italian from Bergamo took to the European Seniors Tour like a duck to water. He won on his third start at the Irish Seniors Open, claimed the season-ending Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy – Seniors Tour Championship, fi nished second on the Order of Merit and was crowned the Hardys Rookie of the Year.

Not bad for a man who used to manufacture polystyrene to fund his golf hobby.

“People say I’m a pretty unique sort of guy. But famous? – not really,” he says wryly. Despite being the most decorated Italian golfer of all time and Italian golf’s fi nest export, Rocca still sees the potential for his country to produce players who can eclipse his achievements, and it’s something he’s going to be a part of.

“Italy doesn’t have a big golf culture. Playing golf is far too expensive. There are only a few courses, and they’re private. It means that at the weekend these courses are mostly reserved for tournaments,” he says.

“The Italian association has asked me to design the fi rst public golf course near Rome. It’s a challenge that I’m really pleased to be taking up. The more kids begin to play, the greater the chance one of them will one day be able to play better than me.

“Golf is a good training for life, and over the years I’ve learned a lot about myself - and I’m still learning,” he continues. “On the course is where a player’s true character comes out, experience, respect, determination - it’s where it all comes together.”

Rocca has had some learning curve. He is still best remembered

for his fl uffed chip, which he followed with a miraculous 60-foot putt at the 72nd hole of

the 1995 Open Championship to force a play-off with John Daly. He was beaten by Daly over four holes, but Rocca’s place in history was assured as something of a cult hero. Rocca made the headlines again two years later at the Ryder Cup at Valderrama by beating the newly crowned Masters champion Tiger Woods in their

Sunday singles match. However Rocca refuses to pinpoint that as the highlight of his career. “In my career I’ve had nothing but great memories.” he grins.

He’s recently begun a new chapter in his life and the likeable Italian has already added to his clutch of memories. He made his European Seniors Tour debut on home soil at the Sharp Italian Seniors Open and fi nished in a tie for 24th and, in only his third Senior start, Rocca walked away from the Irish Seniors Open with the trophy.

VICTORY“I was very pleased to win so early in my

Seniors career and obviously it has been a long time since my last Tour victory,” says Rocca, who set himself up for his win with opening rounds of 69 and 71 before a third round 71 saw him claim the title with a two-shot victory over Juan Quiros and Kevin Spurgeon. “My focus is very much on the Seniors Tour. After 20 years as a playing pro I’m a little tired and looking to take things easier. In 2006 for the fi rst time, I ended my season in October when I normally play until December. It was May before I started playing again.”

Rocca’s rookie season on the Seniors Tour was cool and consistent. In addition to his

two victories he made seven top-ten fi nishes including three runner-up spots.

But Rocca’s second-place prize money was enough to elevate him to fourth on the Order of Merit.

He then put the disappointment of his string of second place fi nishes behind him by winning the Kingdom of Bahrain Trophy – Seniors Tour Championship to win the Rookie of the Year title.

“My fi rst year on the seniors tour has not been easy,” he smiled after the victory. “But it has been very enjoyable and I’ve had a fantastic season. To win feels very nice – especially before the bad weather is coming!”

This season, refreshed after a break during the

winter months, Rocca has continued to show the form that made him Italy’s only ever Ryder Cup player with three top-ten fi nishes so far. He fi nished third at the Azores Senior Open, fourth at the Ryder Cup Wales Open and took a tie for eighth place at The Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard.

Asked who inspired him to continue his golfi ng career as a Senior he says with a smile: “My hero is Tom Watson. I’m amazed by his mental strength. The ability to switch off your other thoughts and concentrate is important in this sport. If you don’t fi ght for every stroke right up to the fi nish, then you don’t have the character, the inner resolve to ever win a Major tournament.”

winning The Open Championship in 1995 he will get other opportunities to cap his Major ambition now he’s settled into life as a Senior. “I’m better than ever before when I’m trying to hit the green,” he says. “My problem is putting, I’ve lost tournaments at the putting stage. I’ve worked really hard and I had a pretty good feeling about it at the start of this season. But a degree of uncertainty is creeping in again, but physically speaking, I feel fantastic.”

Now, in his 27th year as a professional golfer, Rocca can look back at his days spent producing polystyrene boxes in Bergamo and be grateful that the experience shaped his life. “I think a lot of younger players need that experience of working. I worked in a factory for ten years and it was a good experience – I tell you,” says Rocca. “It makes you appreciate what you have a lot more.”

Heading into this week showing good form, Rocca will be looking for a good performance here in the Czech Republic to help his charge up the Order of Merit rankings. ■

IAN Woosnam je stejně úspěšný na European Seniors Tour jako býval v mládí na European Tour. Poté, co se začátkem sezony přidal

ke starým kamarádům na seniorském okruhu, zamířil dokonce na vrchol Order of Merit po vítězstvích na Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship a Russian Seniors Open.Woosnam, vítěz 32 turnajů European Tour přezdívaný kapesní dynamo, vyhrál Order of Merit na regulérní Tour dvakrát, v letech 1987 a 1990, ale jeho nejlepší hráčský moment přišel v roce 1991. Tehdy potvrdil postavení jednoho z velikánů golfu, když vyhrál turnaj Masters na hřišti Augusta National. Poté strávil 51 týdnů jako číslo jedna na světovém žebříčku.Woosnam je také legendou Ryder Cupu, kterého se jako hráč zúčastnil osmkrát, přičemž tým Evropy získal pohár v pěti případech (při remize v roce 1989 pohár obhájila Evropa). ?: Jak se vám líbí na European Seniors Tour?!: Seniorský golf mě opravdu moc baví. Jednou z velkých výhod je, že na tour patřím k hráčům, kteří mají delší rány, zatímco na European Tour jsem musel vyklidit pole mladším paličům. Samozřejmě hrajeme pouze tři turnajová kola, což je příjemné. A také se vidím s mnoha starými kamarády, některé z nich jsem nepotkal přes dvacet let.

?: Musíte mít radost z toho, jak se věci vyvíjejí. Čekal jste, že tak brzy získáte dvě vítězství a že povedete Order of Merit?

!: Loni jsem se musel vyrovnat s nemocí a sám jsem překvapen, že vítězství přišla tak rychle. Je to skvělé. Naposledy před Seniors Tour jsem vyhrál World Match Play v roce 2001 a mé poslední vítězství na rány bylo z roku 1997, takže mám radost, že jsem zpátky ve vítězném kruhu.

?: Těšíte se na turnaj v České republice? Budete zde hrát poprvé?!: Už jsem tady hrál exhibici a těším se na návrat. Východní Evropa v současnosti prožívá vzrušující období, co se golfu týče. Máme za sebou turnaje v Rusku a v Polsku, před námi je Casa Serena Open v České republice, takže je znát opravdu pokrok. V současnosti se zabývám designem golfových hřišť, takže mě baví se

Použil jsem techniku s názvem HeartMath, která mi pomohla

Ohledně kapitánství neexistuje žádná jiná rada než udržovat týmového ducha a atmosféru, jak nejlépe to jde, protože to byl pro Evropu vždycky klíč k úspěchu.

?: Musíte mít radost z toho, jak se věci vyvíjejí. Čekal jste, že tak brzy získáte dvě vítězství a že povedete Order of Merit?

!: Loni jsem se musel vyrovnat s nemocí a sám jsem překvapen, že vítězství přišla tak rychle. Je to skvělé. Naposledy před Seniors Tour jsem vyhrál World Match Play v roce 2001 a mé poslední vítězství na rány bylo z roku 1997, takže mám radost, že jsem zpátky ve vítězném kruhu.

The last event I won before joining the Seniors Tour was the World Match Play in 2001 and my last stroke play victory was in 1997 so it’s great to be back in the winner’s circle.

Q: Are you looking forward to playing in the Czech Republic and will it be your fi rst time?A: I’ve played there before in a corporate golf day and I’m looking forward to going back there. It’s an exciting time for golf in Eastern Europe at moment – we’ve already had the events in Russia and Poland and now we’ve got one in the Czech Republic so the game is really developing there. I’m designing golf courses myself now so I’m also enjoying looking at all these new countries for potential projects in the future.

Q: How important is it for the European Seniors Tour to keep expanding into new countries?A: It’s very important. I’ve done a golf clinic for

He subsequently spent 51 weeks at No. 1 in the Offi cial World Golf Ranking.

Woosnam was also a legend of the Ryder Cup, playing in The Matches eight times, with Europe claiming the Cup on fi ve occasions. He made Ryder Cup headlines again two years ago when he captained Europe to a record-equalling 18 ½ - 9 ½ victory over the USA at The K Club in Ireland, earning countless plaudits from his team for his ‘inclusive’, sensible leadership style.

Having been struck down with M.E last year, Woosnam is now back in tremendous form as he bids for his third European Seniors Tour title this week, which would complete an Eastern European hat trick.

Q: How are you enjoying life on the European Seniors Tour?A: I’m really enjoying playing Seniors golf. One of the great advantages now is that I’m probably one of the longer hitters on the Tour as opposed to having to give ground to the young kids on the regular Tour. We also obviously only play three rounds which is nice and I’m getting together with a lot of old friends, some of whom I’ve not seen for over 20 years.

Q: You must be over the moon with how things are going so far. Did you expect to get two victories

Q: Have you been surprised by how high the standard of Seniors golf is?A: No not really, I always expected the standard to be pretty high and that’s what we’re seeing. In Poland, I shot 63 in the fi nal round and Domingo Hospital shot 64 and that was on a fairly tough course. Anyone who saw the standard of golf played at The Senior Open Championship at Royal Troon will know that it was remarkable and I think the Senior game just keeps getting better and better as more new players join the ranks.

Q: Were you surprised to see Greg Norman doing so well at The Open Championship?A: No, not at all. I’ve known Greg for many years, once he gets into that position he’s very diffi cult to beat. He’s a successful businessman and a great player who is used to winning things – he’s always been a fi erce competitor. It’s just a pity that he probably didn’t have enough tournament practice ahead of Royal Birkdale because of his business interests and I think if he’d played well he may well have won.

Q: Describe the effect the M.E had on your game and how you dealt with it?A: It made me tired a lot. I got pains in my legs and was unable to play golf. Nobody really had any idea how long it would last. There are probably over 100,000 sufferers in the U.K. alone - my friend (and fellow European Seniors Tour player) D.J. Russell had it for four years. I used a technique called HeartMath, which helps me combat it. It helps manage your emotions, relieves stress and basically gets you back in control. I’ve found it incredibly useful in getting me playing again. It’s also good for jet-lag and sleep deprivation.

Q: You’ve battled with the rheumatic condition Ankylosing Spondilysis for many years so I guess you’ve had to learn to play through pain?A: Yes. I’ve had the condition for 15 years and they said I wouldn’t be walking after fi ve. It’s just one of those things and you learn to just get on with it.

Q: You’ve recently signed a deal with Forgan, tell us about that?A: Forgan are the oldest club manufacturers in the world. They were established at St. Andrews in 1860 and they’re recently moved into online club fi tting. They’re among the oldest brand names in golf and I’m looking forward to being their ambassador on the Tour.

Q: The Ryder Cup is just round the corner and Nick Faldo has a tough act to follow - any advice for him?A: I know Nick will do things his own way as he’s always done and I’m sure he’ll be fi ne. There’s not really any advice you can give on captaincy other than to say, keep the team spirit and the atmosphere as good as it’s always been because that’s always been the key for Europe.

Q: How do you rate Europe’s chances of a fourth consecutive victory?A: I think we’ve got a very good chance. We’ve now got a Major Champion in the ranks and it be a really strong team all the way through. The Americans will bring a strong challenge but I think we can do it again. We’ve won three in a row and there’s no reason why we can’t manage a fourth.

Q: What would it mean to you to win the Casa Serena Open this week?A: It would be great. It would make it three Eastern European victories for me this season, so it would be nice to complete the set. It also wouldn’t do my chances of winning the Order of Merit any harm! ■

He fi nished in the top ten on nine occasions in 2006, with runner-up spots at the Irish Seniors Open; the Midas English Seniors Open and the Estoril Seniors Open of Portugal, and ended the season fi fth on the Order of Merit. Last year Ginn was in tremendous form on the European Seniors Tour, fi nishing fourth on the Order of Merit after six top-ten fi nishes including a share of second place behind Tom Watson at The Senior Open Championship at Muirfi eld.

VÍTĚZSTVÍ v Order of Merit roku 2005 zopakoval Sam Torrance na European Seniors Tour také o rok později, kdy vydělal 347 525 eur.
