OVERVIEW ECM was commissioned to prototype a large (900W) and small (90W) propulsion motor to demonstrate the advantages of replacing a conventional radial flux motor with a motor utilizing ECM’s printed circuit board (PCB) stator technology for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) propulsion systems. BENEFITS Motors developed with ECM’s PCB stator technology and PrintStator software have many benefits for AUV propulsion systems. Superior efficiency with these advanced motors translates into bigger payloads and/or longer range. ECM PCB stator motors also integrate seamlessly with different diameter AUVs, further contributing to increased payload, larger missions, and longer range. Additionally, ECM’s solution is electromagnetically and acoustically quiet, which limits interference with on-board systems and allows stealthy operation. RESULTSECM designed and prototyped a 900W high torque, low speed propulsion motor integrated with PCB stator technology for a large defense contractor which added +-5 percentage points to the effi ciency and reduced noise signifi cantly.

The 90W PCB stator propulsion motor (developed for another large defense contractor) added +-15 percentage points to the effi ciency and allowed operation of a side scanning sonar without electromagnetic interference.

NEXT STEPSECM is in the process of integrating its PCB stator technology and PrintStator software into AUV propulsion motors in a range of sizes. ECM’s technology is being utilized in both fl ooded and oil fi lled motors. Increased effi ciency, improved integration, and reduction of electromagnetic and acoustic noise are just a few of the benefi ts when a motor is designed with ECM’s PrintStator and built with patented PCB stators, making the technology applicable for almost any industry.
