CASE STUDY: VILLAGE ROADSHOW
Village Roadshow has been
entertaining Australia for over 50 years
via its businesses including cinemas
and film, music, theme parks and DVD
distribution.
With such a substantial business
footprint, Village Roadshow makes
significant use of technology for
processes such as ticketing, websites,
distribution for film and DVD rental,
as well as its entire communications
infrastructure.
Village Roadshow traditionally managed
its own data centre at its Jam Factory
headquarters in Melbourne. As the
company outgrew the data centre space
with increasing requirements for data
storage, CIO, David Kindlen decided it
was time to review all available options
to ensure Village Roadshow could
continue to deliver its products with no
downtime.
Village Roadshow moves toward the cloud with Interactive and NetApp
“Our data was growing at a phenomenal
rate, and we were running out of
space to store it. We needed a high
performance and scalable managed
production storage solution, that
provided strong business continuity
capabilities at a competitive price to an
in-house purchase,” explained Kindlen.
“I spoke with Interactive about setting
up Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
utilising hardware from its storage
partner, NetApp; with whom we already
had technology that we were very happy
with,” said Kindlen.
Village Roadshow had already developed
a strong working relationship with
Interactive, providing a number
of services including hardware
maintenance and disaster recovery
services spanning over nine years.
The structure at Village Roadshow
is dynamic, and Interactive’s flexible
“The flexibility we are given with Interactive
to tailor an agreement to the way our
organisation works is what has ensured
such a long and successful supplier
relationship. That, combined with the
superior customer service and top-class
facilities they offer.” CIO, David Kindlen
ChallengeVillage Roadshow was looking for a scalable managed storage solution and data migration assistance, with competitive pricing against an in-house purchase.
SolutionInteractive developed an IaaS solution with storage solutions partner, NetApp, for Village Roadshow. All data was relocated from an internal data centre to Interactive’s Tier III data centre, delivering managed production storage, firewall services, monitoring, management and reporting.
ValueVillage Roadshow enjoys a fully managed production storage solution with Interactive and NetApp at a significantly reduced cost of in-house purchase, with the added benefit of utilising their old SAN for DR purposes.

“Opting for Interactive’s managed cloud
storage, based on NetApp, is a great
stepping stone to a full cloud computing
solution, as well as a great cost saving to
Village Roadshow in comparison to the
capital investments to build or upgrade
our own infrastructure.”

approach to Service Level Agreements
(SLAs) means that Village Roadshow can
add and remove websites or different
services to the agreement as needed.

implementing the NetApp FAS3170
storage system, which delivers managed
production storage, firewall services,
monitoring, management and reporting.
“The data centre facility at Interactive is
an impressive facility, and one that we
could only wish to build for ourselves.
The NetApp system ticked all the boxes
for us; providing cost efficiencies,
scalability and flexibility that can cope
with the continued data growth of an
organisation as large as ours,” Kindlen
said.

concludes Kindlen.
Simon Durkin, Director of Sales
at Interactive, said the number of
customers looking to move to the
cloud is growing every day, as new and
existing customers take advantage of
the numerous benefits Interactive cloud
solutions offer.
“The significant investment we have
made in our data centre space and
technology has been in anticipation to
the increased demand Interactive is
seeing for cloud services. We expect this
growth to continue as more businesses
seek the financial benefits of the cloud,
with the security of our Tier III data
centre,” Durkin said.
“Interactive has made it a priority to
provide world-class cloud solutions by
investing in the best local talent and
utilising trusted partners including
NetApp. We are proud to be able to
utilise this suite of products to build
on the portfolio of services we already
provide Village Roadshow,” added
Durkin.
