Remember what it was like to have to look up every

than 100 million tweeters. I you havent jumped on the

social media bandwagon, youre missing out on some big

opportunities to gain new business.

Today, people use social media or practically anything,

rom what their riends think about their new haircut

to recommendations or a good restaurant in the area.

When it comes to dentistry, social media connects dental

proessionals to their patients. Interaction on social

media sites can also serve to inorm patients about new

happenings in the dental feld. In turn, this increases

awareness o the dierent options and procedures

available to patients, without them eeling overwhelmed.

Although there are plenty o reasons or dentists to get

involved in social media, it can be daunting or someone

who has never done it beore. Its easier than it seems, just

as long as you keep a ew things in mind:

BUILD A COMMUNITY

Community building is the number one beneft o having

a social media presence. Social media is about engaging

with current and potential patients, as well as giving

those patients a way to interact with each other. Patients

use Facebook to connect with their dentists and other

patients. They do want to see what kind o content the

dentist puts up on his or her site, but they mostly want

to connect with other patients to share experiences and

reect on the challenges and outcomes o procedures

they have gone through, says Michael Gaglio, vice

president o marketing at Ivoclar Vivadent.

HAVE CLEARLY DEFINED GOALS

Having clearly defned goals is integral to having a

successul social media presence. Some dentists use

social media to grow their already-existing communities,

while others may be more ocused on bringing in new

patients. Dentists should take time every quarter to

evaluate their goals and see i they are being met.

ENGAGE YOUR PATIENTS

Establishing a presence and keeping it populated with

relevant and interesting inormation is only a piece o what

can be accomplished with social media. Clinicians should

be using their social media sites to oster communities

and encourage communication with their patients. Social

media gives patients a means o showing their support

or their dentists practice, whether it be liking the

dentist on Facebook or ollowing the dentist on Twitter.

It also gives the dentist a quick and convenient way to

communicate with his or her patients. Most patients

are not going to be visiting their dentists social media

pages on a consistent basis, so choosing an angle that

involves them (like photo contests, trivia questions, or

even git card and movie ticket giveaways) is a good way

to continue to drive trafc to these sites.

Once a practices social media sites become popular

with its patients, you will fnd that the number o people

liking the page will start to increase exponentially. It is

not something that happens overnight, but every person

who likes the page has a number o online riends whowill see that activity, and likely investigate to see what the

page has to oer. Its the digital version o word o mouth,

and can help you gain even more prospective patients

without having to do anything.

In 2011, the dental industry received international

attention when an 82 year old Italian woman died rom

a case o Legionnaires disease she contracted during

dental treatment its source traced to contaminated

water rom dental unit waterline tubing.

Bacterial bioflm is virtually universal in untreated dental

unit waterlines and can begin orming in a new dental

unit within days. Although there has only been a handul

o reported cases o dental waterline contamination

since 1963, many microorganisms o concern have been

isolated rom dental unit water, namely Pseudomonas

species, non-tuberculosis mycobacteria, and Legionella,

the causative agent o Legionnaires disease. Legionella

poses a particular threat because it can be transmitted

by inhaling aerosols or aspirating water contaminated

with the bacteria. Because o their narrow tubing (1/8

to 1/16), dental waterlines provide particularly well-

suited conditions or bioflm a community o bacteria

and other microbes that adhere to suraces and orm a

protective slime layer. Low water pressure, low ow rates,

and requent periods o stagnation also encourage any

bacteria introduced rom municipal water to accumulate

within the tubing.

According to a 1999 report by the American Dental

Associations Council on Scientifc Aairs, pre-testing to

confrm contamination beore implementing a treatment

protocol is o questionable value, since scientifc literature

suggests that all units are highly contaminated. However,

testing water quality ater initiation o a treatment

regimen ascertains whether a waterline product or

protocol achieves the desired outcome. Monitoring water

quality according to an established schedule can help

identiy problems in perormance or compliance and

provide documentation o water quality.

With all sorts o regulations and guidelines coming rom

dierent government agencies, managing your red bag

and sharps waste can be as conusing as reading a map

upside down. However, understanding the dierences in

regulations between the entities that impact inection

control can help to sort out whats regulated or waste.

Gltd t v. NtMNtd t

Dierences among ederal agencies concerning the

defnition o regulated medical waste have narrowed, but

these defnitions may be superseded by some states and

local jurisdictions. In addition, although states with OSHA-

approved plans must enorce the Federal Standards,

some may have stricter interpretations.

OSHA Mandates: OSHA regulates waste while it remains

inside the acility. Ater regulated waste leaves the acility,

the transport and ultimate disposal o hazardous waste is

regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

OSHA defnes regulated waste as: Liquid or semi-

liquid blood or other potentially inectious materials;

contaminated items that would release blood or other

potentially inectious materials in a liquid or semi-liquid

state i compressed; items that are caked with dried blood

or other potentially inectious materials and are capable o

releasing these materials during handling; contaminated

sharps; and pathological and microbiological wastes

containing blood or other potentially inectious materials.

Waste that has had contact with blood or other body

secretions may be considered contaminated waste.

Contaminated waste, in most states, is eventually disposed

o as general waste. Some states, however, may consider

and defne contaminated waste as regulated waste.

CDC Guidelines: The CDC makes two recommendations

or general medical waste: (1) a written medical waste

management program that ollows ederal, state,

and local regulations, and (2) a training program that

addresses appropriate methods and possible saety and

health hazards or all personnel who handle and dispose

o potentially inective waste. However, these guidelines

are supplanted by ederal, state, and local regulations.

To see i your waste management protocol is up to par,

heres a checklist based on the 2003 CDC Guidelines:

l Does the practice setting have a written medical waste

management program that outlines proper disposal o

regulated medical waste as dictated by ederal, state,

and local regulations?

l Are DHCP who handle and dispose o regulated medi-

cal waste trained in proper handling and disposal

methods?

l Are they inormed o the possible health and saety

hazards associated with medical waste?

l Are leak-proo, color-coded/biohazard labeled con-

tainers (or example, biohazard bags) used to contain

nonsharp regulated medical waste?

l Are sharp items (needles, scalpel blades, orthodon-

tic bands, broken metal instruments, burs) placed in

a puncture-resistant, leak-proo, color-coded/biohaz-

ard-labeled sharps container?

l Are sharps containers closed immediately beore they

are removed or replaced to prevent contaminated

sharps rom spilling or protruding?

l I allowed by state and local law, are blood, suctioned

uids, and other liquid waste careully poured down a

drain connected to a sanitary sewer system?

l Are gloves, ace protection (mask with protective eye-

wear/ace shield), and protective clothing worn when

perorming this task?

l Are extracted teeth disposed o within the practice

setting treated as regulated medical waste? (I the

teeth are returned to the patient, waste disposal regu-

lations do not apply)

l Are extracted teeth containing amalgam discarded in

regulated medical waste containers that will not be in-

cinerated?

l When extracted teeth will be sent to a dental lab, are

they cleaned and placed in a leak-proo container with

solution to maintain hydration during transport? Is the

transport container labeled with the biohazard symbol?
